+ -1 moreTruthfully, we went with Five Stars because they were the best price quote we got, by a lot. They came back with a quote pretty quickly, and I will admit that I assumed we would end up paying more than the quote. We ended up paying about a thousand dollars more in the end, and I think the reason for this is because no one came by to look at how much stuff we had, what our hallways were like, etc. From what I understand, other companies where you'd pay twice what we paid, they walk you through the process more, will come to your place and make a more educated guess/estimate, and I suppose that is what we knowingly gave up for a good price. However, I got a LOT of estimates/talked to a lot of people, and Five Stars were able to provide us with a "rush guarantee" for an extra $500 that we would receive our items by September 3rd (we moved out of our place in Boston on the 31st). It seemed ridiculous to me that others were saying we couldn't receive our items until mid-September! It was hard enough to wait four days, but definitely worth the money to get it rushed. Also, the same movers who moved us out of Boston seemed to drive our stuff all the way down to VA, which was a surprise. They came almost right on time, which was amazing, and they were very professional when they were there, both in Boston and in Virginia. Erika, who handled our estimate and the coordination of the move, was super responsive every time i reached out to her, and the movers were really wonderful. Overall, they were really great, and a great bargain! From what we can tell, nothing wsa harmed in the move either, which is great. It may be worth noting though, that we packed up almost all of our own boxes, and the price was for moving things that we packed up on our own!

+ -1 moreWe scheduled Five Star after a positive experience experience my daughter had with them moving into her apartment. They sent out a worker to size up the job who gave us what seemed to be a reasonable estimate. We had asked for them to pack the items we had not packed ourselves, and they scheduled half a day for it, the day before the scheduled move. Though I expressed doubt that they would have enough time for all the packing, the office manager assured us that a half day would be plenty, and I made the mistake of believing her. However, they did not show up at noon on the appointed day for packing, and when I called to find out where they were, the office manager insisted they had been scheduled for 4:00, when we would not be home. Instead they said they'd arrive earlier the following day to pack ( they arrived at 8:00 AM instead of 8:30). The next day, they completely ran out of time because they had to pack all morning and well into the afternoon. By evening, they were just throwing stuff into trucks without packing it, and still didn't finish by midnight. They had to come back late the next afternoon (apparently, the next time they had a crew available), and arrived at the same time the cleaning service was at work. With the two crews working side by side, things were so confused that the cleaning service threw out belongings that were supposed to be moved (including a lot of camera gear), while Five Star loaded up trash and put it into their trucks and delivered it later to our new house. When they unloaded at the new house, they again ran out of time, and started just piling everything up at the front of the first floor for us to move (my wife and I are in our late 50s - - 2 months later, we still haven't gotten everything where it's supposed to be). There was severe damage to a valuable table, a leg was broken off a sofa, and quite a few fragile items that they had "packed" got broken. And then their charge was more than 50% over the estimate . . . While the moving crew worked hard, they were clearly overwhelmed by the scope of the job. I might consider them again for a small job, but they cabn't handle big ones.

+ -1 moreThey were very responsive and did exactly what they said they would do. We contacted several vendors from Angies list. Five Star was the only vendor that said they wouldn't give us a quote until they came to the house to see what needed to be done. I was impressed with that because the others just gave us a number. Five Star was not the least expensive and not the most expensive quote but I definitely think it was the most accurate. There were no surprise costs, they charged what they said they would. This was our first big move so I was nervous about how it would go. One thing that I would do differently is that I would supervise the packing up a little better then I did. I just didn't plan that part into my schedule. Although everything was packed and moved without anything breaking, there were some things that got left behind, two drawers and a cabinet in the kitchen and a couple of pictures were left hanging on the wall. There was a lot of stuff to pack so it's understandable and it really was our responsibility to do a last minute check when they were done. We have new furniture in our bedroom, there was a scratch/gouge on the headboard of the bed which was done during the move. We didn't contact them about it so I can't comment on follow up as far as that goes. I would recommend them and use them again. It was an overwhelming thing for me and they did make it a little less overwhelming. The packed fast and efficiently, even packing up a very old china set from my great aunt. Not one piece was damaged. They are fast so you have to sort of follow them around and make sure they are packing what you tell them to and when they are setting furniture up in the new place. They set our bed up on the wrong side of the room but when I told the foreman, he was very responsive and kind saying "Very sorry, don't worry we will take care of it now". It was hot and they were tired and he did not show the least bit of impatience!

+ -1 moreDuring unloading two items of furniture (a dresser and dining table) were damaged and movers caused a dent in the wall. These damages were specifically discussed with the movers before they left. They acknowledged the damage and assured me I could file a claim to their insurance company for compensation. I asked the movers if any other documentation or paperwork was necessary, and was informed I just needed to submit the claim. However, when the claim was submitted to their insurance company, it was denied because the damages were not noted by the mover on the shipping documents. I appealed on the grounds that the movers had acknowledged the damage and given me a verbal understanding that it would be covered by insurance, but was denied again. Not sure if was just an oversight on the part of the movers, but they misrepresented their insurance claims policy and were not transparent regarding the procedure. Additionally, they did not honor a verbal understanding that the damages would be covered through their insurance company.

+ 0 moreTHE GOOD: -Price... best I could find -Communication... great! Erica was very helpful on the phone and always reachable -Process... smooth. They were responsive and willing to adjust when need be. On site they were very efficient and quick! THE BAD: -Timing... showed up over an hour late on both pick up and delivery. I sat around for awhile waiting... -Damage... Cardboard boxes were pretty beat up. Some were water logged. No noticeable damage to anything inside the boxes though.Twin mattress was stained brown where the bag had ripped. Leg of old couch was ripped off.
Description of Work: Picked up my furniture and pre-packed boxes from a basement apartment north of Boston, stored them for two months, then delivered them to my new first floor apartment in Richmond, VA.

This is the second time that we use them and both times Erika has help us through she is very professional. We did a two day move and overnight hold due to the fact that we were selling our House and purchasing our new House all in one morning and Five Stars Movers were very flexible in working with us to ensure that the move went smothly. + -1 moreI received a window for their arrival: 8-9am. Three movers arrived at 9am. The lead was professional and to the point. The other workers seemed to either be trainees or brand new to the job. They did eventually send a fourth person, but it didn't help much because instead of making the process more efficient it seemed like one person was always just hanging around. The boxes and furniture were moved carelessly. In transporting items to the truck, they left marks and scratches on the walls and counters. A couple of items did break. In Newton, the apartment was in an apartment complex. The workers would go down together and take a long time in returning. It felt like they took a 10-15 break each time they went downstairs. They charge $3/roll of tape and they charged me for 12. I didn't even use 12 rolls when I was packing, and I packed over 100 boxes. I later found slightly used rolls of tape all over my apartment so basically instead of finishing a roll of tape and then starting another they simply started using rolls of tape as convenient. I had some clothes in bags, and to make it easier for themselves they put those bags in a wardrobe box and then charged me $15 without even asking me about it. To their credit though, they didn't charge me $10 for a mattress cover. Still, I noticed dirt on my mattress that I had to wipe down and I don't know if they actually covered my mattress. The furniture that was disassembled was not assembled back properly. I also had my own tarp that they took (accidentally I presume as it looked like theirs) when they left. I've used several professional movers in the past, and I have to say I was disappointed.

+ -1 moreThat did not look out well. They started out very well but then it just started dumping things wherever. It felt like dumping boxes of furniture and it did not work out well. They did show up on time and they did move everything but the most important part was to get everything the way I wanted and they didn’t do that. I wanted them to pack some things and unpack and it didn’t do any of the unpacking. The people are very nice but then they spoke very little English so I got a lot of smiles but I don’t know what is that to each other. I couldn’t communicate with them very much either. They have perhaps had an overseer who did speak English who could help with communication or should have been somebody who insisted on them doing the right or it would be nice if neither have had motivated themselves to do a good job. Their pricing was above average – it wasn’t especially good, it wasn’t especially bad.

+ -1 moreThe three member team showed up on time, was very professional, careful and worked very hard. They disassembled a queen platform bed, and carried it and the living room and dining room furnishings, including a gigantic mirror and large rug, down three flights of stairs into the truck. Eveything was carefully wrapped. Then, they helped pack up the entire kitchen, closets and bathroom and carried all that down those stairs as well. They arrived on time at my daughter's New York City apt and moved everything in quickly and neatly. The entire move went off without a glitch. Nothing was damaged or broken. My daughter was extremely pleased. I can't say enough good things about Erika, who was extremely responsive and helpful. This move had to be accomplished on short notice - I called on a Saturday for a Wednesday move, and she had everything lined up by Monday am. She insured that everything went smoothly. I expected to pay more than the estimate, as I initially had not told her that I needed help with packing up the kitchen, and was happy to see that the final price was within my expectations. I highly recommend 5 Star Movers. They are prompt, considerate, service oriented and professional.
Description of Work: Packed up and moved everything in my daughter's Back Bay one BR 3rd floor walkup brownstone apartment and moved it to her new apartment in New York City less than 8 hours total!

+ -1 moreDisassembled large items when necessary and reassembled them when delivered. Very respectful, responsive and pleasant. Hard workers. Nothing was too heavy for them. The team leader has been doing this for six years, so he knows his stuff. I'd definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: 5 Star sent four men to move the three floor, five bedroom house's contents. That was large items and boxes and boxes we packed ourselves. There were two stops, as some of the items were going to a third floor walkup. They delivered those items first, then came back, put some furniture in the garage, then loaded up everything else and delivered to our new condo.

+ -1 moreI love five star movers! They are friendly, efficient, and do great work for a fair price. Unfortunately, like all movers, they have a minimum price of $200, so even though we only used them for 30 minutes, we paid for 2 hours of moving services. We called several movers, and they all had minimum costs (and all charged more than $200 for the minimum), so I guess this is a normal thing for movers. They efficiently moved our couch and chair, and fit a huge couch up a tiny staircase without damaging it. They were amazing! Note: If you call to book an appointment, their minimum cost is more than $200. We had a reduced minimum cost of $200 because we had hired them to move our apartment about 2 months before. As a result, if you have not hired them before, their minimum price will be higher.
Description of Work: Moving a couch, an overstuffed chair, and an ottoman 1 mile from one house to another.

+ -1 moreThe team from 5 Star Movers arrived a little late due to morning traffic (30 mins late) but got straight to work and from that moment didn't put a foot wrong. They worked hard and cleaned out our one bedroom apartment in very good time. They dismantled our bed, wrapped our mattress in a sturdy bag then re-assembled it, which was very appreciated later in the day. The guys didn't hesitate to do anything I required to make our move as least stressful as possible. Everything was stacked in such a way to make the unpacking a logical process. Although English was not their first language, they worked as a cohesive team and were very friendly and polite.. I would not hesitate to recommend 5 Star Movers to friends and family. They made an exhausting stressful experience much easier.
Description of Work: 5 Star Movers arrived after we had already boxed most of our belongings over the previous week, despite this there was much to do to get to our next home. they dismantled our bed, boxed up the remaining stuff which had to wait to the last minute, carried everything out to the truck (took a quick lunch break) then did the process in reverse. The move included the man shed contents. I swear the best bit was having the bed put together just before they departed. Do be as organized as you can Mark your boxes with room name as well as contents Make up a box with esentials (marked accordingly) Coffee machine, mugs, beans, sugar, wine bottle opener and some glasses. A few cleaning items like a sponge and spray and a dish cloth. Don't be stingy with a tip, these guys bust a gut all day and deserve it. Don't Throw away your TV box when you buy it, they make moving this expensive appliance safer to move.

+ -1 moreThe experience was EXCEPTIONAL. The 3 member team came on time, worked non-stop and were very careful with our furniture and other equipment. We had a lot of fragile china and other delicate items. The packing and loading was a bit of a production as we lived in a downtown apartment - whch meant take the equipement down via a freight elevator, through the back entrance onto the truck. Yet, the team removed our furniture and boxes in 3 hours (and we had close to 70 boxes). The house we moved into is brand new with high quality hard wood floor. The team took special care to ensure that they help protect the floor. Most importantly, the team members were highly respectful, willing to go the extra mile and exceedingly efficient. We have moved a few times before and have had all kinds of experiences. These guys did a high quality job for the most reasonable price so far. All the other estimates and quotes we received were $400 - $600 higher and somewhat restrictive. The team is highly flexible, hassle-free and efficient. I would strongly reccomend them.
Description of Work: We moved from a high-rise building in Boston downtown to a house in Belmont, MA. We identified these movers through Angie's list. The movers we had identified earlier cancelled on us last moment and then we gave Five Star a call - just two days prior to our move. They came the day after to provide the estimate and draw up the contract. Meanwhile, they had tentatively blocked the crew for the move. Even though this was a last moment request, during the holiday season, they did not increase the price at all. The move went as planned.

+ -1 moreThey give you up until one day before the move to revise the list of items you are moving, and go by your list of items, so they are very flexible that way. Our moving coordinator Erika, was extremely responsive to my questions throughout the process, and Gil, who initially came to do our estimate was very professional. We packed our boxes ourselves, and just FYI you can't insure anything you pack yourselves. We had a lot of our boxes in a 5 x 15' storage unit about 5 miles from our house and the company was nice enough to make the extra stop free of charge. The movers arrived in a timely way and packed our furniture very carefully. They also put down a lot of blankets on our carpet because it was raining. The five young men were very careful handling our furniture and the only thing that could have been improved was the order of the box stacking since I had color coded boxes based on bottom, middle and top of stack to avoid crushing. However, it may not have been practical for them to do it efficiently and although some boxes got a little "mushed," no damage was done to the contents. ( I did label the FRAGILE ones and they were careful to take care of those packages.) It takes them 7-14 business days to travel across the country, based on where their tractor trailer is at the time of origin. We had them pick up our items Nov. 14 (they used a smaller truck, then put it in a holding facility until the large truck arrived), had cleaners come to our house the next day, then closed on our house Nov. 16. By the time we got to our apartment in CA it was Nov. 23 (day after Thanksgiving). We called to find out when the driver would be arriving and got word that he would be there on Nov. 26. This was OK with us given the holidays and our expectations. The movers on the CA end were also very good, professional and patient, esp. because we had a LOT of stuff to put into a tiny space!! We had gotten rid of a lot of furniture but there was still a lot of "figuring out" to do on the fly when we had no basement but still had 2 mattresses, 2 china cabinets, a love seat, reclining chair, coffee table, a whole office set and more. 2 of the CA movers were locals and the other 2, including the driver, were apparently from MA. I couldn't believe the driver was rested enough to spend the energy he did helping with the move. It was raining so hard when their truck arrived that they had to sit around for a couple hours before unloading, and didn't complain. Overall, 5 stars for Five Stars Movers!!!
Description of Work: My husband and I moved from a 3 bedroom home in the Boston area into a (temporary) 2-BR townhouse-style apartment in the Bay Area (CA) in order to search for a home in the Bay Area. We hired Five Stars Movers (if you use Yelp, don't confuse them with 5 Star Movers, based elsewhere) based on reviews on Angie's List and the BBB, and the binding estimate they gave us. (NEVER go with anybody who insists on giving you a non-binding estimate or you may be in for a nasty surprise!) Also, we used this same company for a local move the week before when we sold a very large king bedroom set (minus the mattress), a couch, and a giant Xmas tree from Foxboro, MA to Kingston, MA to a friend. The bedroom furniture was very heavy and required a lot of disassembly. That job cost $550 and took about 4-5 hours from start to finish (we weren't present at the receiving end, but understand everything went fine). One more tip: Buy your own tape for them.. If you provide 30 rolls, you avoid paying them $100 for materials. We got a decent kind online for about $50-60 including shipping (bought it with some other stuff), so you can save. They also needed 3 large boxes for packing glass shelves, etc., and we could provide it or they could. They are flexible. You will need to pay for mattress covers for certain types of mattresses. However, the savings we got by using this company (with the same quality/reputation) far outweighed the price of a mattress cover. Also, don't forget you may need to pay up to $500 for a shuttle fee for most companies if a tractor trailer can't roll right up to your door due to power lines, windy driveway, apartment complex, etc. Make sure you put your name on all of your boxes because your shipment will often share a truck with another party's. 5 Stars says they use a mattress or something as a divider to keep goods from being mixed up. Take out extra insurance on any special furniture and expensive items, but not computers or TV's because they won't be covered with regular insurance if they fail to function after the move (read up on it). Have the movers pack your TV for you if possible, to limit your liability a little more just in case there is physical damage to it. If you have its original box, use it! If there is any flaw after an item is unwrapped, have THEM take a picture of it too. Lastly, don't forget to tip your movers!!! For a cross country trip it's not based on percent of price of move, but we estimated it based on hours of work done by each mover. For the MA movers, because it was a longer day (doing inventory for the insured items) we bought them take-out too.

All of their workers were friendly and accommodating, even when we wanted the same piece of furniture moved to a couple different locations. They went above and beyond and finished the work in the estimated time span. The final total was slightly over the quoted amount, but not by much.

+ -1 moreWe had packed quite a lot of our non-fragile and some fragile personal effects (44 boxes), leaving crystal, fragile figures, a few trunks and all heavy furniture to be packed by 5 Star. They finished the packing in less than one day (3 packers, 2 with experience) and placed everything in storage at our request. One month storage was free. One month while we looked for a property was a $300 charge. At the receiving end, everything arrived in good shape at the time we requested, the unpacking/assembling the furniture/putting it in the rooms we indicated was also finished in one day. Nothing arrived broken. There were a few minor scratches on furniture. The price was the best of all the bids we received and we were a bit doubtful that the service would turn out as well as it did. Job well done. The staff (administrative--Erika--and the movers) were all respectful and diligent. Two minor comments we have: 1) we expected them to haul some of the packing material away (they didn't--we tossed it in the dumpster near the property). 2) we were informed that they had up to 10 days after our requested date to deliver which would have occasioned extra costs for us; fortunately, they were able to deliver within only a few days of our requested date. We remain satisfied customers and would recommend their services to others.
Description of Work: Door to door moving from Randolph MA to St. Augustine FL with a month charge for storage.

Their onsite person was slightly nervous at the time, but still did an adequate job of categorizing our moving needs. Their quote was middle of the pack.
Description of Work: We contacted Five Stars as part of comparison shopping for a move from Lynn to Roslindale. Their quote, even after an on-site estimate, was competitive, but we ultimately went with a small, family-run company due to price quoted.
