They are pretty good. A lot of people in the town use them. I still haven’t got the estimate yet so my project is still on hold but I understand that the guy that was here had a death on his family. All in all, they are pretty good about coming out and we don’t have any issues with the heating. Their pricing is probably a little bit higher than anyone else but you get what you pay for. We pay a little bit more to have the confidence that they’ll come. We’ve had a contract with them for 4 years.
Description of Work: I use Coan for heating oil. We have a contract with them. We also had them come out to see what it would cost to reroute the heat so that we could put the door in replace of the window.

The actual work was well done and professional. Crew showed up on schedule and finished in five hours. A minor issue was an administrative error that caused a one-week delay in installation from the originally scheduled date but COAN notified me a day in advance of the error so it was not a major inconvenience. Other than that, although crew was asked not to empty existing hot water boiler onto grass areas outside our basement (as that would kill the grass), the hose they had was too short to reach a safer area so an area of about 8' x 15' of grass is now dead. One day after the installation, we noted our home was cool and we had a strong smell of oil. COAN immediately dispatched a technician who found and replaced a malfunctioning fuel pump on the new boiler. The remainder of the job went very well, however, so I would still give COAN high marks.

We got price quotes from 4 different vendors for a new furnace and Coan was the best price by hundreds of dollars. They responded quickly when we first contacted them with the problem, they turned around an estimate quickly, talked us though the details, and gave us multiple options when asked. Once we made the decision to go with them, they rapidly setup the installation date. The installation was done in a day with high quality. We are very happy with their performance.

We were so thrilled with the entire process - from the initial service call, which led to a discussion of our options, through the installation, which they were able to schedule quite quickly. The installer was quite pleasant, although we had minimal interaction as he was in our basement. But he allowed my toddler to sit on the stairs and watch him work before it was time for preschool, which was a thrill for my son. The work was completed in a day and we were able to draw a hot bath for the kids that night.

I found there burner service adequate, but I found their service on my a/c unit to be very weak. I found their personnel to be, at times, rude and unresponsive and they would bill me for yearly maintenance without performing the maintenance. I found them uncooperative when I questioned their relationship with the oil they provided me and the bills I was receiving. They failed to resolve the billing discrepancies I had. Their price was always the highest of the companies in my area.
Description of Work: I had been a customer of their's for about 20 years. During that time they provided me with fuel oil and service, air conditioning installation and service, and hot water tank and new burner were purchased from them.

Response from Coan Inc
We are disappointed with Mr.’s review and would like to respond to his comments. We are sorry that we let him down. While he was a long-time customer, he has not been a customer since 2012, which is a disappointment since we valued his business over the many years. He was apparently satisfied for those many years given the long track record and we are sorry that we are no longer his home comfort provider. In regards our AC service, upon reviewing the AC service history, we see very few service calls. We don’t know why Mr. would rate our service weak. We noted the last service call was in 2010. Prior to that we noted only AC system checkups and no service calls since 2001. This would indicate the AC was running properly. We would appreciate details about when Mr. found our personnel rude and unresponsive. This does not sound like us and how we treat customers. We certainly would discuss such behavior with our employees but without specific details it’s hard for us to respond to this comment. We certainly strive to take care of our customers which includes being responsive and not being rude. We do have many happy and satisfied customers but it is possible we slipped up. We are sorry if that was the case. In regards to the yearly maintenance, we believe Mr. is talking about the oil burner service contract. This contract provides emergency service at no charge for covered parts and labor 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. We think it provides outstanding value, worth upwards of a thousand dollars or more in parts and labor. Included in the service contract, which is like an insurance policy, is a tune-up of the heating system. The contract renews each year and automatically bills. Should a customer not wish to renew the contract, they simply call us to cancel the contract when they receive the bill and we credit their account. We ask that customers call us to schedule the tune-up given their busy and hectic schedules. Given the realities of today’s busy life, it’s possible that customers may not get a tune-up every year. We can see that Mr.’s heating system did receive a tune-up every year but one that he had a contract. We are puzzled and confused by the comment” …when I questioned their relationship with the oil they provided me and the bills I was receiving.” We really would like more details about this before we can respond to it. We just do not know what it means. Finally, in regards to price, we must respectfully disagree with Mr that Coan is the highest company around. When compared to other full service companies, we are very competitive. A recent Massachusetts Department of Energy survey showed the highest price was $5.30 a gallon, and the average was $4.17 and Coan was $4.199 per gallon. We have been consistent in this ranking, that is close to the state wide average. We have never been the highest. We will never be the lowest priced company. There are many COD, no service companies that will be lower than Coan. We believe our Bioheat heating oil is better than many other oil dealers oil since we add special additives which improves efficiency and cleans and maintains the heating equipment. We don’t think folks should look at just the price of oil but the overall value they receive from us. We feel Coan provides outstanding value and is best said by our motto, “The Best for Less.” Thank you.

Team arrived on time and did the most professional job I've ever seen in a heating system installation - and I have seen a lot. I have been a Coan customer for oil since 1989 and trust them; this is the second major installation I've contracted to them (previously had them replace my central a/c).

The representative from Coan came to my house to give me a quote on a new furnace. He was on time, but getting the information out of him that I needed was like pulling teeth. When I'd ask him a question about the performance of the furnace he'd just reply that he didn't know because he was a salesman, not a technician; The other companies that came to give me quotes all sent people who could answer these technical questions. I did get a quote a couple of days later that was about 1,000.00 less than any of the others. Because it was so low, and because I couldn't find any information anywhere about the particular furnace quoted, I felt I really needed to find out some serious basic information about that furnace as compared to others. I called the guy a couple of times and left messages asking him to call me. He finally did call back, but it was at least a week later and by that time I had decided to go with another company.

We are sorry to have disappointed (member name removed) and not get her business. We do have many happy and satisfied customers, which is our goal. We do wished we had a chance to talk with her but apparently we had a wrong phone number which we did not find out about right away and which obviously caused communication issues. During his visit, our equipment salesman felt that perhaps the unit could be repaired instead of replaced, and that a technician would be better able determine that, as well as answer the technical questions he could not, after performing a thorough evaluation of the system. However, (member name removed) . decided not to go that route. We did not want her to replace a system unnecessarily. We are surprised about (member name removed) comment not being able to find information about the furnace. The quote that we sent to her shows the manufacturer, Carrier in this case, a well- known HVAC equipment supplier, the specific model numbers of the equipment proposed, and a detail description of the work we would do. We also included a brochure provided by Carrier with details about the equipment. We certainly wish (member name removed) good luck with her new system, and stand ready to serve her if the need arises.

Coan was my second estimate. The first had I dictated that the old boiler had asbestos and needed to be remediated. Coan insisted there was no asbestos and I didn't need a special removal. I explained I had already called the manufacturer of the original boiler and spoke with the VP for Consumer Affairs. He told me the boiler did contain asbestos and I wou D need remediation. The Coan salesman insisted there wasn't an issue. He also tried to convince me that a new high efficiency boiler was fraught with problems. He I sister Peerless boiler was the way to go. Has I listened to this guy, I would have exposed my family to a known carcinogenic and it would have been placed in a landfill where others would be exposed. Also, I would have installed an inferior boiler that would have been an oil hog. Coan is an oil dealer, so they want you to install a boiler that uses lots of oil.

We appreciate the feedback and we are sorry to have disappointed Ms XX. We certainly did not intend to and we do have many satisfied customers We are aware of the requirements regarding asbestos removal and abatement. We have and will continue to advise customers when they need to get an asbestos abatement specialist. There are situations when we can handle it. In this case our equipment specialist believed we could remove the old boiler. We do not dispose of old boilers in landfills. Rather we dispose of them by bringing them to a scrap metal processor for recycling. In regards to our recommendation of a Peerless boiler, we have successfully installed hundreds of them so we do not consider them an inferior boiler. We do install other boilers as well. We recommend the Peerless for multiple reasons including: high efficiency, excellent warranty, in fact a limited lifetime warranty, easy servicing, that they are made in America, and finally overall value. Since the Peerless boiler we recommended to Ms. Xx is rated at 87.5% AFUE, among the highest for oil boilers, we do not consider it an oil hog. Our understanding is that Ms. XX chose a boiler with an AFUE slightly less than the Peerless. We have been upgrading customer’s equipment for many years helping them reduce the consumption of heating oil sometimes as much as 20% to 30%. Overall our customers have reduced their average annual consumption from 1200 to 1500 gallons in the 1970’s to around 600 to 800 gallons today.

This started out satisfactory as I got an estimate in a timely manner. After shopping around for a bit, I found Coan's prices on the AC/Heat Pump install to be very competitive. They were also located in the next town over which I thought was a plus in case there were any issues with the unit. So I signed the contract and they came on time with a large crew to do the install and also add a return to the 2nd floor of the house. There was an issue during installation with the thermostat - It turned out the thermostat they were installing did not work for an AC/Heat Pump unit. The AC/ Heat Pump units require a tehrmostat that can control 1) the AC, 2) The heat pump, and 3) the auxiliary heating unit (in my case, an oil furnace). The "basic" thermostat they brought could only control the AC and the oil furnace. So they said they would hook up the AC for now and come back later with the correct thermostat to connect the heat. This was in May. They did not come back to install the right thermostat until late September. This took 4 MONTHS to put the right thermostat in. There were nights with the temperature dropping below 50 degs and we had no heat in the home because they never re-connected the heat. I have a 1 yr old son in the home and I had to run 2 space heaters around the house to keep him warm. The return vent they added also had an issue. They had put in a vent that was too small for the wide duct that they connected it to. This resulted in too much air trying to be pulled in the slim vents, creating a loud whistling noise. So throughout the summer, the upstairs sounded like a jet engine when the AC came on. Again, they did not fix this until September. I contacted the installation department many times over the summer requesting to fix these 2 issues. The gentleman I spoke was to was very nice and said they were tied up with AC problems over the summer and since it was still warm, I should wait for the heating issue. That iss understandable. The AC / Heat Pump is new technology to them also. That too is understandable, but that was in May. But I cannot justify having to wait 4 months to fix an installation problem when I just spent $7,000 on an installation, ESPECIALLY when it comes to a loud return vent that kept us up at night and having our heating system disabled when it was cold outside. The person that came to replace the vent took 30 mins. Why did I have to wait 4 months for that was beyond me. I was very patient with Coan and was very nice each time I called reminding them of the issues but in the end it just kept getting put off. I would not recommend using Coan to anyone even if their prices are cheaper. I wish I had paid the extra $500 to other company and have gotten it done right the first time instead of having to chase Coan down for months just to have them fix their own mistakes.

First we thank [member name removed] for his business. We regret disappointing him and understand his frustration about the time it took to complete this project. While we have many satisfied and happy customers, we did not get the job done here as we normally do. His AC installation was more complicated than most since we were connecting to an existing heating system. We worked behind the scenes trying to get critical information from our supplier and manufacturer to make sure the system would work as intended and not be damaged. We were given conflicting advice by our supplier and manufacturer that did not make sense to our technicians and electrician. So, we delayed completing the installation until we felt confident that we had the correct and proper directions to make the unit work as intended and not be damaged This did take longer than expected. We are sorry for the delay but in the end we believe [member name removed] has a very good heating and cooling system that will work for many years. As we were waiting for the correct information from our supplier and the manufacturer, which took much longer than we expected, we delayed returning to repair the ductwork issue, thinking we would make one visit to complete both items. Also, with the extended heat wave we experienced, we did get unusually busy. We did not realize the extent of the noise or the lack of heat issues. In hindsight, we should have fixed the ductwork much sooner. We hope Mr. [member name removed] will accept our apologies and we do look forward to serving him in the future.

Truly, the WORST experience I ever had. I accepted their offer only because of the price. Boy, was I wrong. This was during the heat wave of June. Coan's sales person was in our house and gave us an estimate. Once they scheduled the installation, they found out that they don't have what they sold me in the inventory. I took them a couple of weeks to get it. That's OK, it happens. Then, they installed only the AC and the heat pump, but did not attach the oil heating. They didn't tell me that. The AC worked as it should. Then, few nights later, it was a cold night so we tried to use the heat pump or the oil heating, whatever works... Apparently, they wired the heat pump wrong and didn't connect the oil heating at all so we (myself, wife and 10 months old baby) froze during the night. They came in the next day and wired the heat pump properly. Few weeks later, after calling them again and again (and not getting too much response) they came to try and wire the system to use the oil heating system as backup. That didn't work. Weeks later, after calling them again and again (and not getting too much response) they finally came and wired it properly. When I called asking if they already have the wiring schemes ready, they told me that they have it ready. So why didn't you call me?? why wait for me to call you when we are in the process for so long? This whole process took 2 and half months! I had to take 4 days off work (instead of 2) and wasted a lot of time leaving voice mails as no one returned my calls, but they knew that I was angry and frustrated. Their responsiveness is horrible. Eventually, I asked for some compensation. I didn't ask to get everything for free, but a small discount might have made me feel better. Instead, their distributor called me and told me that for the price I paid, this is the service that I deserve. The funny thing is that they wasted my time on that call, while apologizing for wasting my time, but they did not want to give me any discount. "It happens" and "most of our installations go smooth" was their normal excuse, forgetting that sometimes things go bad and you need to handle them properly. So all in all - I would highly recommend to pay the extra buck and get a better company. As they told me - you get what you paid for, so don't be tempted by the low price!

We are sorry to have disappointed [member name removed] and understand his frustration about the time it took for the installation of his AC system. His AC installation was somewhat more complicated than most since we were connecting to an existing heating system. We were given advice by our supplier and manufacturer that did not make sense to our technicians and electrician. We are sorry for the delay but in the end we believe [member name removed] has a very good heating and cooling system that will work for many years. We find it understandable that [member name removed] was disappointed about the supplier being temporarily out of the Air Conditioning system he contracted for. Like most dealers and their suppliers, it’s impossible to maintain inventory of all available AC systems since the number of different units and possible equipment combinations are endless. The heat wave we were experiencing just added more stress to the inventory chain. As soon as we knew about the delay, we called [member name removed] to make him aware of the problem along with the expected delivery date of the equipment. When the equipment arrived, we rearranged our work schedule to install his AC system immediately. The work took place on July 11, 2013 having been postponed 8 days from the proposed install date of July 3, 2013. During the installation our electrician became concerned that the wiring options specified in the manufacturer’s paperwork didn’t exactly match our application. He consulted with our technicians and all agreed additional information was needed as they felt they were possibly missing a part. They contacted the manufacturer who assured them the equipment they had was appropriate for the application and no additional parts were needed. Using the instructions provided by the manufacturer on how to integrate the AC and heating systems, our techs started wiring the systems. However, their professional, expert opinion was that it would damage the equipment if connected as instructed by the manufacturer. They called our Installation Manager with their concerns, who instructed them to hook up the unit strictly for cooling, which could be done without damaging the systems. This would allow time to get clarification from the manufacturer on the correct integration of the multiple systems, and keep [member name removed] cool and comfortable during that heat wave. We do acknowledge the heating components were not connected since we were focused on getting cool air during the heat wave and not heat. We were still waiting for the information from the manufacturer about the correct wiring. While we were a bit surprised when [member name removed] called later in July about the heat not working, we responded immediately, and wired the heat pump portion of the AC system to operate to provide heat. We continued reaching out to the manufacturer, having multiple conversations, as well as having our tech return to [member name removed] home. We still were not satisfied the system would work properly. Conversations continued and finally we received written documentation from the manufacturer which did indeed confirm our tech’s opinion that additional material was needed to ensure the proper and correct wiring of the AC system. The part was installed and the systems have been working fine.

This is one of multiple times we've used Coan's service department and it is the absolute best! Every member of their team that came to our house was professional, knowledgeable and respectful. In addition, the service manager, Ed, stopped by on multiple occasions and stayed in phone contact during our ordeal. We plan to be Coan customers for a very long time!

Had family over during very hot summer week and ac failed. Called Coan because they had serviced a boiler I had in a previous house. They were clear that it would cost a bit for them to come out and it did. However, they came on time, and quickly diagnosed the problem and replaced the part. My point of reference came when I had to fix my other ac unit a month later. I used Angie's List to find someone else and they were just as good, but significantly cheaper, including 1/4 the price for the capacitor.

Response from Coan Inc
We appreciate [member name removed] business and feedback. We are disappointed that he was not completely satisfied but we feel we did the best we could. We are happy that we could get his AC system working as quickly as we did, and got his family cool and comfortable. In regards the capacitor price, we stock a universal one that can work on many AC systems. It is more expensive than the one specific to any given AC system but it allows us to get system working again very quickly. Obtaining the specific capacitor for any AC system may cost less but could take us much more time, perhaps several days. So, during heat waves we strive to repair systems as quickly as possible. When things are not quite as busy, we may try to get the specific replacement part and the best possible price. We stand ready to serve [member name removed] whenever he needs our service again. Thank you.

Their water heater replacement went very smoothly. I thought it was OUT of warranty and would cost a lot more. They investigated and determined it was still under warranty so they were able to do the work for a lot less. GHood quality work and very pleased with the outcome.
Description of Work: In addition to being my oil dealer, Coan Oil has maintained my HVAC and Hot Water systems for several years. I have always found their team to be professional, courteous, and of high quality. I most recently had them replace a water heater (near the end of the five-year warranty) and the work was done quickly, professionally and with no issues.

Their service department was great with us. Our boiler cracked / exploded mid winter and they helped us through with super attentive service... Boiler replacement ,.. And got us back up and running quickly.
Description of Work: We had a great experience with coans service department and a terrible experience with their sales department. After 3 phone calls went unanswered related to questions about our service contract we jumped ship to another provider.

Just saw this review. We appreciate the member's report but were concerned with the grade for professionalism. He seems very happy with the other aspects of his experience with us. Is it possible to get some more feedback on the reason fort the grade for this. Thank you.

things I liked about the service: - accessibility: anytime I called I was able to get in touch with someone -- there were very few times I needed to leave a message, and when I did I was called back - clean workspace: the area where the 2 units were installed were very neat and orderly, there were no dangling wires, etc. - completeness: though it was beyond what was being called for, the installers replaced the pipe from the water heater to the furnace, because the original pipe was no longer appropriate for new coding standards and, though I had to ask, after running the condensation line through to my washer drain by dropping the line through a ceiling tile, the installers accommodated my request to drop it down through the wall things I did not like about the service: - miscommunication: there was some miscommunication regarding when the rebate forms needed to be filled out and delays in receiving the necessary paperwork caused my initial filings to be rejected; this was straightened out, but it required a number of follow-up calls - damage: when running the condensation line across the ceiling, some of the tiles that were moved for access were broken. while there were a few factors for this -- 1) I was unaware they needed to run the line the way the were and had piled all of my basement junk directly in the path they needed to work in and 2) the duct work left only about an inch of clearance to shift the tiles -- I was not told the tiles were broken and nothing was proactively done to offer to aid in their repair. ultimately, it was sort of a non-issue (I never mentioned it), because I happened to have a few left over tiles I was able to replace the damaged ones. overall, working with Coan was a good experience and I would do business with them again.
Description of Work: I had a forced air gas furnace and central a/c condenser installed. installation took 3 days total: 2 days for the initial equipment installation in November and 1 day for finalizing the a/c calibration in May.

The repairman arrived on time, conducted maintenance checks of the heater, and cleaned out our filters, leaving the basement in the same condition it was in before he arrived. We've had several service calls from them, and they are always polite, professional, and on-time.
