Jim Sullivan came out to inspect the work to be done and continually tried to upsell me into doing more than I needed. He stated plainly that the job was nearly too small to be worth his time if I didn't get additional work done. I had an Angie's List coupon that was giving me $800 worth of masonry work for $400, so I agreed to unwanted improvements in order to get the use of it. He agreed to send me an estimate which I got via mail four days later. The estimate discounted the $400 I'd already spent on the coupon, but not the $800 I'd been expecting. Since I'd already paid $400 towards the job, I tried to get in touch with Mr. Sullivan to ask about the discrepancy. He never responded to any of my emails and every time I called his cell phone it went straight to voicemail - with a mailbox that was full and not accepting any additional messages. Finally, as the 30-day period for a refund with Angie's List was coming to a close I sent one last email warning him of my intention to cancel the deal and followed up with one last attempt to call him. No response. So, I canceled the coupon and got my money back. Jim Sullivan masonry may or may not do good work - I'll never know as they never bothered to talk to me more than once. In my experience they aren't reliable or trustworthy and they appear to have tried to cheat me out of $400. Even if they called me up tomorrow I'd go with someone else rather than trust someone who disappears when there's a problem. As a side note, I have to wonder about the integrity of someone who goes through the effort to set up a coupon promotion and then refuses to do half the jobs this promotion brings in. My advice would be to avoid this service provider and don't trust them with anything you need done on any kind of schedule.

I met with the client and went over all the details of the job. we arrived at an agreement to proceed . I prepared a contract and mailed it. the following day an emergency arose and I was 100% unavailable from june 2 to july 2. my office manager called this client and left messages regarding this. on july 2 when I was available I called this client to rectify the situation they informed me that they didnt want my services. Angies list is refunding their deposit . I never received it. I apologized for the inconvienence but it was not in my control to be unavailable

When we had our home inspected our inspector found that the partition wall was missing in our smoke box. We did not have enough time to have a mason come look at it but I contacted Jim via email to ask him about this issue. Jim was good about getting back to me and assuring us that it could be fixed and that it shouldn't break the bank. We decided to purchase the home and while doing some work we found that most of the stone facade was no longer attached to the fireplace. We called Jim to have him take a look at it. He said it would cost $100 to inspect our chimney but if we used him for work on the chimney that the $100 would go towards that bill. Luckily Jim found no other issues with our chimney except that the critter cage was separating a bit so he quickly fixed that. Jim said that extending the partition and rebuilding the stone facade would cost $1,500 and take one and a half days but that he wouldn't be available for 6 to 8 weeks. We decided to go with him because we thought the cost sounded reasonable and because other masons we had talked to previously said they couldn't even look at our chimney for weeks. When it came time to have the work done is when we ran into some issues. Jim originally said they would start on the day after Columbus day but then later told us that they would start on Columbus day but then on Columbus day he told us his associate didn't want to work on Columbus day so they would start around noon on the following day. This wasn't a big deal as it seemed like one guy decided he wanted to start early while the other wanted to take the holiday. Unfortunately, they didn't come the day after Columbus day either. There were several dropped calls that day and when I finally got in touch with Jim it was mid afternoon and he informed me that another job took too long and he wouldn't be able to start until the following day. He also told me at this point that the job would take three days instead of one and a half. They started on Wednesday but were unable to continue on Thursday because of a rainstorm. Unfortunately there was now a hole in our chimney and in the wall around the fireplace before a rainstorm was supposed to hit. I decided to cover the hole in the chimney with plastic to be safe. The following day Jim and his associate came back to finish the job. Unfortunately I came back to find that I had some cleaning to do. In the end they did a good job at a good price from what we can tell and in the number of days originally quoted. However, he pushed back the start date a couple of times, changed his mind on how long it would take, didn't think of covering the hole in our chimney before a rainstorm and left a bit of a mess. Since quality of work and price are most important we'd consider him for future work but may look into other masons as well.

I tried calling him and left a message and I haven't heard back. According to my husband I just wanted my chimney and some corners in my garage repointed. I have gotten some other quotes from other providers but he is charging me $3,000. This is too expensive so I would like to go with a different service.

Both Jim and his guy (whose name escapes me) were pleasant to work with and punctual. The work looks great and I would certainly will be using them again. The only critique, which I offered to Jim after the job, was that his man didn't do a great clean-up job after finishing. I arrived home shortly after he left, and found hoses unwound on the lawn and some wet mortar left on a decorative hose rack (which I was able to get to before it hardened). Nothing big, but can't give Professionalism an "A" because of it. But, again, I absolutely will be using them again.

First, I'll say, I did look at a couple other Masons with higher reviews. They were a bit pompous and seemed like I was just another in the line to be served. Jim was extremely responsive via the Angie's List messages and was able to view pictures of my brick island to be removed. After a couple back and forth discussions and sending him the pictures, he determined he could get the job done that Saturday. In a matter of a few days he came out and started the job. He brought a two man crew for a half day, and used a jackhammer to remove the bricks and concrete. He also provided haul away services to remove all the concrete and brick. Jim was also a great guy to work with, and provided some good laughs as he worked.
Description of Work: I had an old wood burning stove with brick island in the first floor of my split level ranch. It was starting to crack and really needed to go. Jim was hired to break it up, and remove it.

I received an estimate showing extra costs that were expensive, so I won't be using them at this time. They were helpful when I spoke with them, but I couldn't understand the estimate because it wasn't written properly. They sent a new estimate, but it still wasn't clear. I didn't think I was getting the value that I thought I would, but he was very personable.

regrettably reading your review. I listed the total hrs that your work would take to complete using a 2 mancrew. then supplied options that would help you to reduce the crews hours thereby saving you additional $$$. we had two phone conversations and several emails to help you understand the contract. after our last conversation I thought we had an agreement to proceed with the work. if you thought that the $399 coupon that you purchased was enough to complete a $1900 job I am as confused as you are.....seriously!!!!?????

That was very well. Part of the wall he worked on is starting to flake away again. I'm not terribly pleased about that but it was okay. They were responsive on calling back and forth with them about their responses and they were okay. I would use them again in the future.

I am more than happy with the work. The front walk looks like new. The stairs are now safe and the brick pillar is no longer on the verge of collapsing. Jim and his co-worker were on time every day. Jim keep me informed about what he was going to be doing and made good suggestions for improvement. For instance, the stucco on the side of the house is prone to degrading so he recommended to use stone instead. He had stone in his shop which he provided (at no charge) that perfectly matched a nearby wall. At the end of his work day he sent me photos of their progress. The work was done at the quoted price and in the quoted time. Jim is a real professional and clearly takes pride in his work. I recommend him very highly.
Description of Work: 1) Reconstructed the top 10 or so layers of a brick pillar by disassembling the layers, cleaning the brick and assembling. 2) Repaired stucco (part of a tudor) by removing the damaged stucco, placing a wire frame and replacing stucco. In one area he places stone on the bottom part of the house wall to match a nearby stone wall. 3) Restored a flagstone front walkway: removed all of the old cement from between the flagstones, trimmed the edges of the flagstone walkway, pressured washed the stones, replaced the cement and then sealed the walkway. 4) Repaired front walk stairs: removed the stone stairs and the attached wrought iron rail, rebuilt the base of the stairs and then replaced the stones. These stones were also pressure-washed and sealed. The railing, which was rusted, was cleaned with a wire brush and repainted. 5) Repaired another set of stone stairs leading to the backyard.

Jim and assistant called and came promptly and observed the front walk. Jim noted the "natural" nature of our walk and wooded setting and agreed that that look could be maintained when filling the hole and replacing the stone slabs. His assistant was there and listened to the discussion. The slabs were to be connected with a natural stone/sand filler. Since that work was small and since I had a coupon, I suggested they clean and level a stone walk in the back; they agreed to do that. The assistant arrived promptly the next day as arranged and proceeded to do the work on the front walk. The completed work did not look like what we had talked about. Cement was used as filler between the two stone slabs and showed as white lines on the walk. Since this was not what we talked about, I questioned the assistant and he said this was a better way to do it and it would last longer. He did offer to remove it and do it as I wanted. By this time I was pretty confused and a bit upset and finally told him to leave it. He proceeded to clean and level the back walk and did do a very good job there.
Description of Work: filled hole under bluestone slabs in sidewalk, probably dug by an animal. Replaced 2 bluestone slabs and joined with concrete. Also cleaned and reset stone blocks in back gardenwalk including replacing uneven blocks in one area.

I asked for an estimate from this company . What I received was everything but. It had items with prices of services that I could have done. I chose to have a service done that was a $800 service. The deal I purchased for $399.00 should have covered this. When I responded to the estimate checking to see if the Big Deal would cover the service, I received an email back letting me know that I could hang onto the deal for another time or get it refunded. I've never ran into someone so unprofessional. Communication is only done through mostly the message center of Angie's List. I assumed I'd be receiving the quote here as well but when I hadn't received it, I notified him and he let me know he only sends quotes to personal email and not the message center of Angie's List. Horrible communication, not a good deal-not a deal at all. I wouldn't recommend anyone use this company!

We spoke on the phone before you purchased the big deal coupon and I informed you that it may be too close to winter season for your project to be completed this year. I also informed you to read the language of the big deal carefully before you proceed with your purchasing of the coupon and that it could be held until spring and then redeemed. you went ahead and purchased the coupon on a friday. I arrived at your site on the following Sunday on time , provided a quote the following wednesday, for the 4 items you requested which totalled 6 days of work with a 2 man crew. did you seriously expect to receive that much masonry work for $399???????? SERIOUSLY????thanks for submitting your derogatory remarks.

Work went very well. We didn't know what to do with our existing stone deck. Jim gave us all the options and cost estimates on each piece of the restoration work. Because we hadn't decided on the function of the space, we limited the work to restoring two brick surfaces that support the deck and stabilizing the steps. Everything was a mess -- broken, stained. By the time Jim and his coworker got done, they looked like new -- if they ever looked that good when they were new. Jim, without a doubt, is the best communicator of any contractor we have ever worked with. He told us exactly when he would be there and what he would be doing each day. He started and completed the job exactly when he said he would. It was amazing. We still don't know what we'll be doing with the deck, but if we decide to go with stone, he'll definitely be doing the work.

We purchased a big deal coupon for 8 hours of masonry work for $399.00, which is a half price deal. We purchased this to repair our front brick steps. Our hope was to get 8 hours of repair work to improve our steps. We did not expect a quote of $3,500, including the coupon, being told the steps were not salvageable and needed to be replaced entirely including brick and granite. We felt there should have been some other options offered. We got the impression this service provider only wants good size projects to make the coupon worth while.

Unfortunately I deemed the steps unsalvageable because they are. also ,the steps are located 80 feet uphill away from the driveway which makes disposal of them, and delivery of replacement materials extremely difficult. also, your steps being 8 feet wide , makes them twice the size of standard steps. I have recently completed steps in sudbury for clients that found my pricing reasonable and my work exceptional. they are angies list members and the reviews are posted. thank you for your interest in my services.
