Description of Work: After paying a $25 donation to use this service, you are given a list of local oil companies who are part of their network, offering a discounted cost per gallon. Initially I was assigned a particular company who didn't respond at all, so I was allowed to switch to another one. You can choose whichever you prefer from a given list with the comparative per gallon costs. Although not the most organized group, they were quite nice and, after a bit of duplication of efforst, eventually found me a vendor to use.

+ -1 moreI suspected I had not received the full quantity of oil I had paid for (because twice I was charged about $700 a month - 200 gallons of oil - to heat a 1054 square foot home - not including the water heater - with an insulated attic and window replacements and with a new thermostat set at 64 degrees). When I called Mass Energy Consumers Alliance to make them aware that I had this suspicion, and to ask them about the process for investigating this, the receptionist immediately assured me that MECA only worked with reputable companies that would never shortchange customers. She defended them before I even explained my reasons for concern - she didn't ask about my reasons. When I expressed surprise that the "consumer" organization wasn't concerned about the possibility of fraud, she grudgingly told me that I could request an investigation and she would pass my information along to that division. I could not contact the division myself (and she didn't seem like an unbiased person to pass along the details of my complaint). She told me that the division would decide whether to contact me for more information before contacting the oil company (whom I had already contacted, anyway, and who sent a technician that confirmed there were no oil leaks and my furnace was operating at 81% efficiency). It seemed like there was no point in following through with MECA. What would be the point of MECA simply calling the oil company to tell them about a complaint, with assurance that MECA is automatically on their (the oil company's side)? I had mistakenly assumed that MECA was a consumer's organization - looking after the interests of it's consumer members. It seems that it's more of an oil company consortium. I think this should be made more clear to the public.
Description of Work: Mass Energy Consumers Alliance referred me to a heating oil provider, Scott Williams, and I qualified for a slightly reduced rate on oil.

Description of Work: MECA does many things, but they're best known (to me) as a non-profit heating oil buyers' co-operative. They pool together the buying power of thousands of people and shop that around to leading heating oil distributors. The distributors who are chosen must offer preferential deals - often 25-40 cents per gallon better than you'd get on your own. These savings easily pay for your membership cost if you heat a home in the New England area. They also promote green energy, lobby the state gov't, and do good things on behalf of their members.

Even if you don't purchase fuel oil, you can sign up for wind and biomass-generated electricity. I f you live in their service territory in the Greater Boston area, make sure you look into what they can do for you.
Description of Work: This is the long-standing fuel oil and green energy consumers cooperative in Jamaica Plain. I used them for fuel oil from 1980 through 2009 when we converted to gas boilers. They are essentially a contracting agency: they select an oil or electricity dealer for you and ensure that they perform. They are there to work on your behalf if you have a problem with the vendor, which I never did.

We've been a members for over 5 years. We re very light users of heating oil, but have always easily made back the membership costs quite quickly. In my opinion, this is a very good group to join, both for the price savings and for collective bargaining giving power back to the consumer.
Description of Work: For several years now we've belonged to Mass Energy (formerly the Mass Oil Consumers Alliance). They are a non-profit consumer collective bargaining group for heating oil and other green consumer energy needs. You join and pay a small membership fee ($20 per year, or $45 for 3 years, $10 for fixed income) and they assign you to an oil dealer through whom they have negotiated a group rate. Delivery and payment after that is all as usual, except you are always billed the MassEnergy group rate.
