It was great. It came out beautifully. They did a nice job. They cleaned everything up and they were gone and it was perfect. Their price was good and they were prompt. They had good ideas. We had a couple of problems with how to put the fence up and they resolved them.

They were phenomenal!!!! George arrived and dug all the post holes and poured cement around each to secure it. The second day he put up the rest of the fence....He worked non-stop...no chatting on the cell phone, taking long breaks, etc. He arrived early in the morning 7:30 AM and worked until about 4:30 or 5 PM when he finished the job. George was a very nice man and a very hard worker. Paul Brown, the owner, answered all my questions quickly by email...usually within a few hours at most. He also quickly gave me estimates for some changes I considered. He was very professional. AND....the actual cost came out to be less than the estimate by approximately $800... I ABSOLUTELY would recommend Paul and his workers.

WHAT would I do without Paul and the team from Sudbury Cedar??? They are phenomenal! Fast, professional, helpful, and skilled, they do a fantastic job. This is the third job for which we've used the team and, while I hope I don't move again to need another fence, if I ever do, I'll call them in a heartbeat. I know the job would be done well, carefully, and in a timely fashion. Moreover, I know that when they leave, the only evidence that they'd been there would be the fence!!

Paul has my highest recommendation. His work followed an extensive re-grade of my lawn. As my landscaping progressed this summer, I had questions for Paul and even changed my fencing order once the excavation work was complete. I don't know how Paul does it, but he responds to questions immediately. He's thorough, punctual, responsive, and committed to doing quality work. I received his name from my next door neighbor who had used Sudbury Cedar to install a driveway gate. Paul happened to be driving past her house and noticed that the gate needed to be adjusted. Unprompted, he stopped, adjusted the gate, and refused to charge for the service. With our project, Paul listened to our "wants" for our new backyard, presented several options for fencing, and was truly interested in pleasing our family. The installation was completed within 1 1/2 days with little to no disturbance to my lawn. The crew was very neat and left our lawn in such good shape that my landscaper was able to seed the lawn immediately. Once my gates were installed, I decided that I would prefer to add some decorative hardware. As I began sorting beneath stacks of my old fencing to find my old gate hardware, Paul's crew stopped work and insisted on locating the hardware for me. They even began searching their truck to see if they had hardware that I might like. His crew even volunteered to mount new hardware if I wanted to purchase it while they completed work in my backyard. Overall, Paul and his crew are a very attentive company genuinely interested in making sure clients are pleased with their work.
Description of Work: Paul removed the existing fence and installed a Chestnut Hill fence and arbor.

We didn't really shop around since we wanted the fence installed as quickly as possible and felt comfortable going with Sudbury based on the Angie's List reviews. I assumed they would bring out a sample of the fence when they came by for the official consultation/quote but that wasn't the case. This made me feel a little uneasy since, once the fence is ordered and installed and can't really return it if you don't like. There were other yards in the area where they had installed similar fences but it was hard to get a look at them without looking like a stalker Since I wasn't sure exactly where our property line was, it took me a while to work out the exact measurements of the fence. There was some confusion on my end as to how much each section of fence cost since the quote we received wasn't that detailed. . As it turned out the fence looks good, the design and installation were well done, and the price seemed fair. I would just recommend that prospective buyers ask to see a sample of the fence and post with post-caps from any potential installer before making their decision.

We have lived in our house for several years and have had several contractors visit the house to do various jobs. When we encounter a contractor who delivers great customer service, we like to reward them with a great review. Sudbury Cedar Co. did an outstanding job from start to finish. My husband and I have waited a long time for our new fence. The existing one was old and falling apart. We had three companies visit our house to walk the property, measure the space, and discuss our ideas. Paul came out on the initial consult and was punctual, listened to our ideas and helped us decide on the height of a section of fence, and gave us a quote soon after (either that night or a couple of days). My husband and I took our time deciding which company we were going to use. We narrowed it down to Sudbury Cedar Co and another company. We chose Sudbury Cedar because of Paul's excellent communication via e-mail and phone (him and I had several conversations via e-mail), references, and the price. We are so happy we went with Sudbury. Paul told us initially that it would take 4 to 5 weeks for his crew to do the work and we were okay with that. Sure enough, when week four approached, Paul's crew came out and began the work. Paul's crew was professional, responsiveness, nice, worked as a team, and fast. Paul also visited to ensure everything was going smoothly. We hit a bump in the road when one of the panels wasn't the correct length. The project manager pulled us aside and explained the situation. He gave us a couple of choices and we decided to wait for the correct panel to be shipped out. Within a week, that panel was installed and the yard looks completely different now. We are 100% satisfied and would highly recommend Sudbury Cedar Co.
Description of Work: Helped design upon initial consult. Demolished and removed existing fence. Installed 5' vinyl fence with 1' picket with several gates and also installed a 4' vinyl picket with gates.

In my line of work I deal with a number of contractors and see the whole gamut of estimates. One of the things most difficult to obtain in soliciting bids is a true apples-to-apples comparison. It's not enough to say "I want _insert job here___ done". In that scenario, the definition of the job has been left in the hands of the bidding contractors. Every contractor has their own idea of what should be done. Comparing bids in this manner is an exercise in futility. Someone's $11,500 bid cannot be compared to another contractor's $8,000 bid UNLESS both contractors are working on the same set of assumptions and using the same materials ( rarely the case). I had specifics on my fence: two gates, the type and grade of wood, gate hardware, and perimeter. When I contacted fencing companies for bids, everyone was bidding on the same project. Of course this means some contractors won't respond; they want to do the work their way, not your way. Once contractors realize you are specific about what you want and know something about their business they never call back or submit a bid. They just wander away to find somebody less informed. I see it all the time. If you don't know enough, find a neighbor or someone who can provide you with some information on your particular job. Information is king. Of the fencing bids I received back on my project, all three were fairly tightly clustered. I went with Sudbury Fence as I found Paul to be very knowledgeable, straightforward, asked the right questions and showed me a book of prior work where some jobs were similar to the grade changes in my yard. Interestingly, Paul was the only contractor who asked where his bid stood relative to others I received. That is how you stay competitive. Paul's team did a super job including the fabrication of a custom gate because the gate they brought to the job wouldn't fit. It was my fault because I built a small retaining wall near a garden bed between the time I spoke to Paul and when he installed the fence. Most people would have treated that as a change order and hiked my price. Paul took it in stride and said, "Don't worry about it, we'll make another gate so it will look right". That is a class act. Anyone taking the time to look over Paul's reviews on Angie's list will understand the depth of this knowledge and his sense of fairness; he's received nearly universally good reviews. There is only one outlier, a poor grade from someone WHO DIDN'T HAVE PAUL DO ANY WORK. This person graded Paul with an F because he thought his bid was too high. Huh? Who the heck uses Angie's List to evaluate bids? I'm interested in the work a contractor has performed, not the fact someone thought a contractor's bid was too high. Who cares? Don't use the contractor if you don't like their price --Bbt don't confuse grading their work with a bid for a job. What this one person should have done was to get the contractors together and have them spell out exactly what they were going to do and why. I've done this type of comparison only to find all sorts of assumptions -- one contractor is only putting down 2.5 inches of asphalt, not 3.5 inches priced in the bid of someone else. Or primer and one coat vs. primer and two finish coats. Well no wonder one bid is much higher! - somebody is doing a better quality job. Ignore this one outlier and rely on the other reviews for Sudbury Cedar. You'll be glad you did. The only "F" associated with Paul is in Fair.

I had 4 estimates for 600+ feet of cedar post and rail fence with welded mesh (to keep dog in), and 4 gates. I got estimates from 4 vendors for the exact same project. The estimates were: $8K, $9K, $14K, and... wait for it... $16K. Sudbury cedar was the highest. I went with the lowest and got exactly what I wanted. Glad I didn't spend an extra $8k to get the same thing from Sudbury Cedar. I feel a little guilty posting this but it was such a giant swing that I would feel worse knowing that others were paying so much more than necessary.

Response from Sudbury Cedar Fence Co Inc
I am sorry that (deleted member name) has decided to base his comments and decision solely on price. Sudbury Cedar Fence has been delivering exceptional service for over 30 years as evidenced by our past reviews and number of referrals. We get asked to bid on numerous projects per season and our estimates are consistently middle of the range. There are many variables to consider in addition to price: quality of material, quality of installation, company liability and workman's comp insurance compliance, and responsiveness. Sudbury Cedar Fence Co utilizes the best material on the market and experienced professional installers, is adequately insured and pride ourselves on our service. We wish (deleted member name) the best of luck with his fencing decision.

We live on a busy road and needed a secure fence to keep our children from straying too close to the street when playing. We had not yet settled on what type of fence we wanted, or whether it would be along the property line or off the sides of the house. We solicited quotes from three local fence companies, including Sudbury Cedar Fence. Sudbury Cedar was one of two companies whose owner showed up to evaluate the job and provide the estimate. The third company sent a sales person. Sudbury Cedar's owner, Paul Brown, was very involved in the planning process and provided us with three rough estimates (one for a fence along the property line, and two for fences extending from the sides of the house). He discussed the pros and cons of each plan with us, advised us on where we could cut costs, and returned to the property multiple times to help us finalize our decision. Despite not having (nor providing) a hard budget, Paul did not pressure us to include add-ons or otherwise go outside the scope of our planned project (the rep from one of the other companies kept asking to "imagine that we had no budget," which drove us nuts). We ultimately settled on the longer fence (about 160 feet) along the front property line, which also included two gates (one 16 feet and one 14 feet). Sudbury Cedar's estimate was the "middle" of the three we received from the various companies. I put "middle" in quotes because it was only about $600 higher than the lowest estimate (but included stronger gates), but it was several thousand dollars lower than the highest quote. Of the three companies, Sudbury Cedar was also the only one that provided the quote in a timely fashion and on the day that we were told to expect it (the other companies told us to expect the quote within 48 hours, but we didn't receive it until after chasing them down for it several days after their own self imposed deadlines). Paul's responsiveness and hand holding throughout the planning phase made our decision to go with Sudbury Cedar an easy one. The work was performed by a fellow names George. It took a little longer than expected, but the fence was installed during a heat wave (90-100 degree days) so full days were not an option for safety reasons. What really impressed us was that a portion of the fence was not manufactured correctly (we didn't notice at first, but George explained the defect to us), and instead of installing the poorly made sections and hoping that we wouldn't notice, George sent to defective sections back to the manufacturer and had them make new sections... TWICE! The final product looked fantastic. Shortly after the fence was installed, one of arms to one of the gates dropped about 2 inches for some reason (settling of soil?). I intended to adjust the collars myself because it looked like a really simple fix. Unfortunately, I did not get to that part of the "honey-do" list until about 9 months later and at that point figured out that I could not make the repair myself as it was a bit more complex than I expected. I emailed Paul and explained the situation to him. Despite the fact that this project was likely a distant memory for him, he replied to me within an hour, asked no further questions, and simply wrote "I'll send George to take a look at it." A few days later, the gate was repaired and it looks great again. The entire project was hassle free and it is apparent that Paul and others at Sudbury Cedar take pride in their work. Sudbury Cedar honored their Angie's List coupon.
Description of Work: Installed a custom vinyl fence in front of house with two swinging gates (4 arms). Length of fence was approximately 160 feet. After getting an estimate from several fencing companies, Paul at Sudbury Cedar beat them all. After seeing the finished product, we are happy to say that the lesser cost did not mean lesser quality. Both he and his crew were punctual, polite, and professional. The fence is sturdy, durable, and looked like just what Paul had shown us in the catalogue. The crew who performed the installation understood exactly what we wanted, and cleaned up after themselves when they were done. Should we require fencing again in the future, we would not hesitate to give them our business again, or recommend them to anyone who is looking for this type of service. We even left their sign up in our front yard since we were so happy with their work.

It was a pleasure to work with Paul and Sudbury Cedar. Paul was punctual for our initial consult and he was very informative as to our options. He was very responsive from start to finish. The installation team showed up bright and early and got the job done efficiently in one day. They removed all of the old fencing and left it spotless. The fence looks great and our new driveway gate makes getting in and out so much easier, especially with the wheels. I have already recommended Paul/Sudbury Cedar to friends and colleagues, and we will definitely call Paul first for any future fencing needs!

Paul was fantastic - showed up on time, spoke with my husband and me and listened carefully to what we wanted, wrote up an estimate, and told us the work could be done in the middle of April. Instead, he called at the beginning of April to say his men were ready to install the fence if that was all right with us. It took one day, and Paul returned later to ensure that everything was done right - which it was. We have already received compliments from neighbors on the fence, we love the way it looks, and our dog is happier (and contained). I don't remember exactly what we paid, but it was very comparable to other estimates I received, and Paul helped us to cut costs by installing some parts ourselves. I would recommend Paul and Sudbury Cedar to anyone.

Single installer came when estimated and finished the job over a couple of days with a 3 day gap between days. Removed old fencing from premises. Cleaned up so you'd never know he was there. Not the cheapest but hassle- free. I knew they were good because of the extensive wrought iron job they installed at my daughter's house. I was pleasantly surprised the gate was available and installed before expected. It's nice to open the back door and let the dog out ! I would recommend them without hesitation.
