The floors came out fantastic and are a showpiece of my house. They were very accommodating to my schedule and my requests. Also I had purchased their services at a discount through either Angies List of a Groupon, I don't remember which, and despite the fact I didn't get my room prepped and painted before the expiration date of my coupon, I just talked to them before the expiration date and they said it was not a problem, just let them know when I am ready to go. Nice guys, did a good job, and I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I hired RC Hardwood Floors to refinish my hardwood floor in my living room. I was antiquing my floors and they were very cooperative about working with me on a custom solution. I wanted them to strip down the floor, I then distressed the wood and applied multiple shades of stain (which ended up taking a few weeks), and had them return to polyurethane and buff. It was not a typical job for them but they were very agreeable to working with my needs and breaking the job up to allow me ample time to complete my portion of the work.

It took a little time toschedule, but when he and his crew came they were professional, pleasant, eveything was done as planned. The floor looks great. It cost more than the original deal price due to the floor area being a bit larger, and this was charged at the normal rate, which was fair I figure. I recommended them to someone else too.

I purchased the Angie's List deal of $399 for 250 square feet for my sister who lives in the same town. They were very quick to respond when we e-mailed to set up a date for the service. They came at the time they promised and sanded the floor. Later in the day, they applied the first coat of poly and came back the next day to put on the other two coats. The floor came out fantastic. They look wonderful and the three coats of poly are going to ensure they look good for quite some time. The workmen were polite, professional and answered all questions. They came and worked right through till the job was done. I would definitely use this company again. There are so many floor sanding companies out there. This one performs right from the contact through to the finished job.
Description of Work: I bought an Angie's List hardwood floor sanding deal from RC Hardwood Floors. Two men came and sanded the floor. Then they applied the poly (three coats). The work was completed over two days.

Came out for an estimate and was able to work us in fairly quickly. Did a beautiful job refinishing the floor- it wasn't an easy job as there is a huge island in the middle and many nooks and crannies to work around. Much of the work had to be done with smaller tools as the big machine would not fit in the space. They added an additional coat to make sure the surface would stay scratch free. The whole job took 4 days (we sent the dogs away during the process). They suggested we cover the floor with heavy paper for a few days after the dogs came home and made suggestions about covering certain areas with carpets, but to move the carpets around to prevent 'sun staining". The workers were quick and friendly and came when they said they would. Overall, a very nice experience.
Description of Work: Refinished badly scratched hardwood floor in kitchen. Had floor installed with new kitchen 6 years ago, but wasn't properly finished and got badly scratched up by two large, but friendly Labrador retrievers.

My house is about 20 years old. The oak floors were in deplorable condition. He clearly knew his woods and the floors now match a room that I had hardwood put in a few years ago. I was told he commanded a higher price because of the quality of the work. I give a grade A for the sanding job. I had water damage in a few areas... some very black wood. Now, only I would know where the damage was. I should have done the work in the spring when I could open the windows once dry. My house smelled of the chemicals in the finish for months. Four coats of finish was recommended. I did not want to spend that much. I realized after the third coat that he was right. I called to get the fourth coat. They applied the fourth coat over dust and grit. Obviously they did not sand between the finishes and did not clean the floors before applying the final coat.... so I have a gritty finish in the corners on my stairs and in a few places on the floors. They also did not sand the trim on the stairs at all so it is rough. I did not call them back... kept meaning to. The floors look wonderful if you don't look too close. I think they could have had a fifth coat!
Description of Work: Sanded and refinished two rooms, a hall and staircase.

I did end up paying a little more than the special price because the room was bigger. The people they sent were fabulous and did an outstanding job. People that come over comment on how beautiful the floor looks. The first time they came I had moved all the furniture out. The second time the furniture was heavy and they moved it and the owner called and told me they had to move the furniture and that they would have to charge me extra for that. I was a little annoyed because I thought I was a good customer. The quality was excellent and outstanding, but that rubbed me the wrong way. It took them like two minutes to move the furniture. Then they said they could not help put the furniture back. I think with good customer service you don't nickel and dime people. I mean I love my floors and they did a good job and were clean. It does say in the fine print on the coupon that they do expect the room to be empty.

Well, we do practice good customer service. 100%. But we do not move furniture. In or out. For various reasons. Most importantly, we are floor installers, sanders and refinishers. Not furniture movers. We could damage the furniture, anger the customer, who will then forget how beautiful their floors are because they are angry that their chair got damaged. Or, we could get hurt moving your extra heavy couch, or table or even not so heavy, but awkward chair. Then we are down a guy. We need our guys very much, so we always tell the customers to move furniture out, clear the room completely, down to the remote, so we can just go in and do our beautiful job. Thankfully, it states it all over the ad and the coupon, as well as the confirming email we send to the customers. So there is no finger-pointing. For future customers reference, our floors are top knotch because we only focus on that product of our company.

Not well. Felt like it was a bait and switch. I do not want to hear from the provider, nor do I want this review posted. I am just providing the review because you keep on asking for review everytime I log on.
Description of Work: I bought their big deal. I called and asked them to come for an estimate. They asked me the measurements of my floor and then proceeded to tell me how much it was going to cost over and above the bid deal. I asked Angie for my money back. They didn't even have the common courtesy to come out and look at my floor before giving me an estimate. End of story.

Two men arrived right on time. They came in with their equipment and also covered anything they felt was necessary. They workied very well and got every mark off the floors. There was not a drop of sand and the floors looked beautiful ! My only regret was we wished that we had an additional coat of finish. We will have to do that another time when we call them back. We would not hesitate to reccomend them to any of our friends. They did a great job. Bob and Carolyn
Description of Work: The offer was for refinishing a small area covering the entrance way to a small open section of the living room. The area also extended to the kitchen and down to a hall leading to a dining room. Approximately 200 sq ft . The price included sanding and 3 coats of finish.

Overall the work was okay. My appt time was changed from 2pm to 11am which caused a problem at work for me. The crew arrived and right away there was an issue with what I paid for the coupon and how much it was going to cost to complete the job. An oversite on my part for not reading the fine print and not being a whiz at math! In any event I contacted Richard and he was courteous and we reached an agreement. The crew started right away. Although they seemed rushed to finish the job because of the distance they had to travel to get back.I was told I would have 3 coats of varnish on the floors upon completion, not sure if the first coat was varnish as they put a light coat on which made the floors look wet but not "varnished". The second coat was clearly a varnish. We did notice that the hearth that was in front of our wood stove was not lifted; they sanded right around it. So we removed it when the floor dried and were assured that it would be corrected. Luckily we stayed in our basement while the work was being performed. After a couple of hours of silence we wanted to check the status and much to our surprise the crew had left. The heat was on high, the lights were all left on, windows and doors open (not unreasonable except the heat was blaring and the house had to be locked up for the night!) Now, the floors are wet and we cannot reach the heat, lights etc.! The next day Richard came to buff out and apply additional varnish (1 coat). This is why I think I only got two coats, the first coat wasn't buffed out. In any event the job was completed. The spot in front of the wood stove was buffed out but not to match the rest of the floor, if we ever decided to take the wood stove out, hmmm that might be a problem. There is another area I noticed looked streaked but again I hesitate to call because of distance. I will be sure to read all of the information that comes with the coupon deals in the future.
Description of Work: Floors resanded and finished. I am rating my overall experience as a fair due to couple of factors. First Iet me say that Richard is very professional and responsive. The crew was punctual and did arrive when they said they would; although my appt time was changed from 2pm to 11am which caused a problem with my scheduling at work.I do think that because of my location in comparison to where the RC floors is located has something to do with why my issues cannot be resolved. I did see a couple of imperfections in the work performed but hesitate to call Richard back because of the distance.

I am quite surprised by this low grade this customer left us. This customer was informed of the amount of money the overages were for her area, which is outside of our service area normally, but we honored it anyway. She then proceeded to turn our guys away when they arrived claiming the amount was too much. This project was scheduled at least a month in advance, plenty of time to calculate how much it was going to cost to perform this job, or cancel it. Rather than lose 2 more hours in travel time, Richard contacted the customer directly and worked out a price acceptable to her, which ended up being less than what we would charge for a local job. Windows are left open a crack to allow for drying and ventilation and to allow fumes to exit. Heat is necessary for drying as well. The email I had sent her also stated that the room needed to be empty of all obstacles, that would include a moveable hearth. The heart wasn’t moved, so we sanded around it. By the time she realized it was moveable, we had two coats on the job and the room would’ve needed the entire area resanded to match. While I’m very happy that this customer is being considerate by not calling us with any issues, I’m not sure she fully understands what a considerable discount she received and hope that she not only reads any and all small print on future coupons, but gives consideration to what she is saying when leaving a review for future customers.

Thankfully we don't say 100% dustless, so the amount of dust behind is expected in any sanding process. We do the best we can. Most people are pleasantly surprised, as they state in previous reviews. As far as being scammed, a scam wouldn't list the possible additional costs in the small print. So this customer was not forced to pay anything, they could've easily read the small print or the confirming email that is sent that clearly stated the possible additional costs, and if they didn't like what they read, the are free to cancel prior to the scheduled project.

Our experience with RC Hardwood Floors was excellent. We had them strip, sand, repair and refinish our family room oak-plank floors and our office oak-planked floors. RC took the time to sand the floors down to a very flat surface; the oak-planks were 'curled' up on the sides because not enough nails were used when the floors were installed. (The prior owners of our home installed the floors; not RC Hardwood.) RC Hardwood was clean and neat throughout the job. We cleared the family room and office completely of furniture, wall-hangings and curtains, so there was very, very little dusting to do when the job was complete. In fact, the our floors are now about 12 shades lighter in color, so the rooms feel very clean. When we first walked into the house after being away for a week, the house looked and smelled brand-new. We highly recommend this supplier if you are doing anythign with wood flooring. The guys were knowledgable, explained every step of the way what they were going to do, completed the job within three weeks of us hiring them, ontime and exactly on budget. We will hire them again!
Description of Work: RC Hardwood Floors is *excellent* -- I'd recommend them to anyone looking for "the best" when it comes to wood floors. RC came each day at the exact time they said they would. RC charged us exactly the amout we'd agreed to up-front. The RC team was clean and neat throughout the entire job. Our floors look better than they EVER have -- it turned out our floors were not originally installed properly and had buckled over the years (we bought our home when it was over 20 years old). RC Hardwood took the time to repair and sand each board in our family room and our home office such that the floors now look and feel *completely* differently than they ever have. Our floors are clean and smooth and have just enough shine (but they are not slippery). We love the work they did and will use this supplier again in the future.

Unfortunately, the review form this customer completed did not allow for the option of stating that he could not rate us as he had never had contact with us or had work done by us individually. I emailed him right after reading this report and informed him that we would in fact still honor the coupon he thought had expired. Here is a snippet from his actual email back to us. It's a pleasant surprise to receive an email from you. I did not in any way intend for my response to Angie's List be a negative reflection on your company. The automated form required that I provide a response for things that didn't make sense given my particular circumstances. I was at Glenn's house watching your guys (and I believe, your husband, if I'm not mistaken) do the work and was impressed. The fact that I didn't use the coupon was my fault not yours. I very much appreciate your offer to honor the coupon. Our circumstances between now and the end of the year are such that we couldn't deal with the disruption. If we could put this off until the new year, we could make some arrangements. If that is not possible for your schedules, then I have to continue to live with my mistake. Most people/companies would not honor an expired coupon - I commend you for that.

First of all I purchased the deal at the beginning of November and they offered me dates for the end of December or the beginning of January. There was no clue in the add that there would be a delay in scheduling. There was also substantial hidden cost for the deal. For instance they were going to charge additional $100 to do a room upstairs. Also anything over 150 square feet was an additional $3.50 per square foot. Also the picture in the big deal add was very misleading.

This customer purchased a coupon on 11/8. The confirmation email I sent him thanked him for his patience as the coupons are such a good deal that we get alot of response from them, which means we book up very quickly. Most customers understand that a good deal like this means they have to take as soon as they get. If the customer stated they needed it done by a certain time, I could have worked with him. When he stated that he needed it done asap, I asked him about his job. He never responded to me, only by giving this negative review of work we never did for him.

Showed up that morning with equipment but after I left for work they left my home unlocked and me a voicemail stating that the AList deal was really for and in and out job and that my floor required an all day. I have the voicemail archived for review. I immediately called them back but they did not answer the phone. No work was completed and after this encounter I do not wish to have them in my home again. I did receive a follow up email asking if I would like to rebook at 8pm on 11/8 a full 36 hours after walking off the job stating that I would need to pay an additional 450.00 for the work to be started. I was quoted 300 the morning of 11/7.

The coupons clearly state “pine floors are not included” in this deal. Though we are not obligated to do a pine floor, most times we are willing to do it for additional anyway. The coupons are set up so that the customer gets a really good deal for a really basic job. Basic meaning, straight sander. We have a specific amount of time set for these jobs. The reason we do not include pine in most of these jobs is specific to the nails in the job having to be set or not. This particular job, the customer stated, incorrectly, that the nails were all set during an installation previous. The floor that was installed, was actually a patch, and incorrectly installed and boards were elevated more than half an inch, so would require more sanding. Also, when we arrived not one nail was set. That alone would take the same amount of time to prepare that the coupon job would take to sand alone. Also, he did quote the customer $300 initially before getting into the job, however, upon setting the nails, the floors the customer installed were cracking and splitting. This became a much more labor intensive job overall, and would require more time than we had scheduled for, so we did have to leave. We did call the customer and state all this before leaving, unfortunately were not able to get ahold of him prior to leaving and had another job to be on, so we couldn’t wait. We did wait a day or two to see what the customer wanted to do and when we didn’t’ hear from him, reached out to try and work with him to no avail. Basicially, we were misinformed from the start and pretty much put this customer in a bad predicament. We were more than willing to go back and complete the job to the customers total satisfaction. As far as leaving door unlocked, customer stated someone was coming by within 15 minutes to pick up a dog, so we saw no concern what so ever.

They did a great job. The team came in, sanded the floor, put on the initial coat(s). Then came back for 30 min. another day to put on the last coat. No dust, no mess, fabulous floors. Love the beautiful shiny wood grain. It's the nature of refinishing, but it takes a while for the varnish fumes to go away, so have a good strategy for ventilation while the coats harden and dry. This would be the case for any provider- it's a function of varnish. We closed the door of the room, left the windows open if it wasn't raining and put towels on the door bottoms to block the air from coming back in the house.

Workers did not remove any of the barriers preventing full access to the floor, such as vent covers to air ducts, sliding doors and their floor guides, and the ladder to the attic. The person sanding created a gouge nearly four feet wide across the floor boards that was quite visible, and less obvious dips near three of the walls. They also did not remove all of the staples from the floor that had held down the carpet pad, so after the entire job was finished, my bare feet got some prickly surprises when I walked on the floor. I was told that the first coat would not be polyurethane because it would just be absorbed by the wood. I thought I was getting an oil-based poly for the second and third layers. When I wanted to have the same procedure done to other floors, I selected a different service provider. This person did remove vent covers, sliding doors, and floor guides for same. After he had applied three coats of oil-based poly, the color of this second room's floor was much warmer than the color of the first room's floor. I contacted RC Hardwood Floors inquiring as to what product was used. RC answered promptly with a brand name. My new service provider told me that was a water-based poly. So, $545 dollars later, the new service provider redid room one, having removed the vent covers, sliding doors and their floor guides, and the ladder to attic, resanded the floor to get rid of the gouge, and applied three coats of oil-based polyurethane. When he then refinished the hall between the two rooms, the appearance of all three floors was the same.
Description of Work: Newly uncarpeted, by someone else, white oak floors sanded, and three coats of finish applied.

Response from RC Hardwood Floors
I'm very sorry to hear this bad experience, but I'm inclined to feel that you are speaking of another flooring company. We would never leave anything behind, much less staples in the floors. It would tear our sanding paper, so all staples are removed prior to standing-ALL STAPLES. Same with nails, if there are exposed nails, we set them prior to sanding so as I stated, this does not sound like RC Hardwood Floors. As far as the finish, it is 100% oil-based polyurethane, we do not use water based unless requested, and we charge more for it as it is more expensive. We don't recommend it and always try to sway the customer to the oil based poly as it has a longer life on your floors. In fact, she contacted us to do the second room as she was very happy with how the job came out, she said?

RC Hardwood Floors did an excellent job. The initial contact was pleasant enough, but there were a couple of times that I had questions thereafter and received a slow response. I later learned that Richard (the owner) had been swamped with work via an Angie's List coupon special, which was the reason for the delay. Richard was out in the field doing the actual work, and I'd rather have a small delay and have the real expert doing the work, rather than the alternative. When Richard and his crew arrived on site the first day, they went right to work, to the point of not even making small talk. This caught me a bit off guard, which is the reason for the B grade in professionalism. After I saw one day's progress, it did not matter. Richard and crew were extremely efficient and thorough. The floors were a mess (wavy and uneven) when they started the job, and a year and half later, they remain looking fantastic! The first day, the crew was at the house for the entire day (10+ hours). Richard himself scraped between the balusters by hand. The first floor was filled with the furniture that we had moved down from the second floor, and not a spot of dust showed up on any of it. Their dust containment system really works! When they left after the first day, the sanding had been completed and the first coat of polyurethane was down. The remaining days were short, with some quick buffing and additional coats. After 4 days, our entire 2nd floor looked like new! The semi-gloss was a good choice as the floors have some shine, but not so much that they show scuff/scratches easily. We waited 2-3 days before actually sleeping in the house as the fumes were quite strong after the job was completed, but you will get that with any floor refinisher. The main reason that Richard's prices are so good for the excellent quality he provides is that the crew is so efficient. If you wish to pay for a contractor to chit chat, hire someone else. If you'd like great floors at a wonderful price, hire Richard and RC Hardwood Floors! We will be hiring him again when it is convenient to refinish the staircase and the first floor. PS - Prior to hiring RC Hardwood Floors, I bought a video course on how to refinish hardwood floors and went through the entire course. I'm a very detailed engineer who likes to know not only how to do something, but why it needs to be done a particular way, and what apparent shortcuts need to be avoided to yield exceptional results. This provided me with some great questions to ask prospective flooring contractors in order to separate the wheat from the chaff. I was ready to refinish the floors myself and knew exactly what I was doing, but hiring RC Hardwood Floors ended up being a less expensive option. All in all, it was a great decision to hire Richard and his team.
Description of Work: Approximately 600 square feet of oak floor refinishing in the bedroom area of our house. This included closet interiors; under radiators; and small spaces between the balusters of the railing between the hallway and stairwell.
