Allan, Bill and their crew were terrific. Allan was very knowledgeable and detailed from the first visit on. The estimate broke down everything that needed to be done and explained any exclusions leaving no surprises come installation time. On installation day, Bill and his team showed up on time getting right to work and finished the job in 3 days. Bill was very communicative and professional while on the job, answering any questions I had, and also took care of gas permitting with the town. Berry Mechanical knows what they're doing and were very transparent through the whole process. My wife and I feel great knowing we have a great product in the end that was installed correctly and efficiently.

Jamie came out and wrote us a very detailed estimate, he was professional and well informed. Installers Dustin, his helper and the electrician were all very professional: they arrived on time, prepared the work area with drop clothes, and did a very neat job. The unit works like a charm, and just in time for the heat and humidity.

I had to wait 3 weeks just to get someone to come out and see me because they tell me they are so busy with 'contract' customers. Like some of the other reviewers, I had to plan my day around this appointment, taking a day off from work as it is not usually easy for me to be at home during the day. The day before they were scheduled to come and see me, they called to cancel the appointment because they are still too busy with the 'contract' customers. Unbelievable. I will be finding someone else.

Response from Berry Mechanical Services, Inc.
We have to start by extended our sincere apologies to this customer for what occurred here. While it may seem that our reason for having to cancel our appointment with this customer is indefensible, we have extenuating circumstances like losing a service technician during the busiest time of year & having great difficulty finding qualified technicians & installers to keep up with renewed demand post recession. We would never want to be forced to cancel a booked appointment, even weeks in advance as we did here. We realize that a customer's time is valuable. We also realize how negatively this impacts our solid reputation. Going forward during this very busy time, & until we can refill the service tech position, we will need to curtail taking on any new "service" business so that we can avoid creating the great dissapointment that this customer endured. Sincerely, Berry Mechanical Services, Inc.

Berry Mechanical were very professional, they showed up promptly, they did the work in a timely manner. They left the place neat and clean. The people that installed were very professional. Two things - I don't know if I'm happy with the system that they put in. I had it in at the beginning of March and it was between the end of the heating system, so I didn't really get to use the heater a lot and now with the air condiditioning system I was going to call him back and tell him to get back here to make sure it's, I don't think the unit is quite big enough for the house so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. Plus, he did say he would stand by his work and do whatever it took to make sure I was happy. We're having a heat wave here now so I might call him by the end of the week. They told me that they would, they would make arrangements for the city inspector to come out and give me a certification for insurance purposes, and that never happened, I called three times. I need to get on them for that. Even though they did the installation and all of that was fine, we need some follow-up. It was a competitive price, I had called other people.

The appointment for the estimate was set a few weeks in advance and I arranged my work schedule to be home. Approximately one week prior to the scheduled appointment someone contacted me to let me know the appointment needed to change. I understand conflicts happen so I moved around appointments on my work schedule to accommodate the request. On the day of the appointment someone left a voicemail indicating the appointment would need to be a half hour later and if that was a problem to let them know. So for the third time I changed work meetings around to make the time slot work. After waiting an hour for someone to show up I finally called to get a status. The person on the phone indicated she had cancelled the appointment because she did not hear back from me. I responded by saying the voicemail did not ask for confirmation. The person became very defensive so I ended this very unproductive call. So I am left wondering why in this case is the customers schedule less important? I contacted this company based on the high ratings on Angie's list. In looking back on some of the reviews someone had given an F rating based on not being able to get an estimate. The company's response to that F rating is posted below. So now I understand that I am not a contract customer so I should expect this level of service. "We are at a point in the cooling season where we are only able to provide prompt service to our "contract customers" who have signed maintenance agreements. Sadly we know that this type of review will be the inevitable consequence of our difficulty in keeping up with demand. " 7/5/2013 The response provided by the company is actually not in keeping with the facts and I do not appreciate being accused of making false statements. I actually still have the call log and message on my phone. I received one call that morning and the message said " Jamie will be at the house by 10:30. If there is going to be a problem with this time please give me a call." Since I did not have a problem with that time I did not call back.

There's two sides to every story right? So ironically our design consultant was on his way to this customer's home. Lately however we have had some "no shows" by customers who either forgot we were coming or failed to call & cancel. So we are in the habit of calling to reconfirm the appointment prior to arrival. This customer's claim that we never indicated a need for a call back on the two messages we left that morning is false. Not hearing back from the customer became an indicatin that they were not keeping the scheduled appointment. Hindsight being 20/20, we will now continue on to our scheduled sales appointments even when we don't recieve the confirmation call we deserve. Best, Berry Mechanical

We are looking to add to or convert our current steam by natural gas system because as we have expanded the use of our home we have several places that would be difficult to heat by steam. We were also interested in central air so we wanted to know more about split systems that heat and cool. Mr. Berry, who came to our home seemed very but the options he kept coming up with were far more expensive that we had expected and, at least during that visit it seemed difficult to come up with a comprehensive plan. When he left I assumed he would respond with an estimate of some of the options we discussed but we have not heard from him in over three months. I'm hoping it was a misunderstanding. As I said he was very professional and knowledgeable but we didn't come up with any solutions.

I called Berry Mechanical to repair my heat pump that was installed two years ago by an incompetent installer from a different company. I got Allen Berry, the owner of Berry Mechanical. He's the embodiment of all HVAC contractors/owners. He was very professional, courteous, and very knowledgeable. He took the time to explain the procedures and showed me how it was done. I learned a great deal from his visit. He asked me what seemed to be the problem(s). I told him I have a leak in my heat pump system and I knew where the leak is. He then injected nitrogen into the system to confirm the leak with a (nitrogen gas detector?) and he meticulously checked for other leaks -- I suspected the incompetent installer didn't do. He repaired the leaky pipe joint after the confirmation by the leak detector. He then re-injected nitrogen into the system to verify the fix by a pressure level meter. Although the system's pressure was stabilized -- a good sign that there was no leak, he went beyond by using other method to detect the leak at a micron level. Once he satisfied, he vacuumed the system and injected the refrigerant and turned on the system to verify whether the system was working normal as expected. It was pleasant working with Allen. He was very transparent. I highly highly recommend Berry Mechanical.

It really went off without a hitch. Allan was completely knowledgeable and really helped me understand what was going on as well. Alan Berry came to my home and worked with me to understand what I was looking for. I wanted to replace my boiler, hot water tank, and add a new zone, and additional baseboard in my "great room".. Alan listened, offered suggestions and options. Within days, I was provided with a couple of quotes with the different options we had discussed. As I was making a large improvement to my home, I contacted a few other companies for quotes... After meeting with the others, it was clear that Alan and Berry Mechanical would be the one... Still, with such a large investment, I wanted to be sure of the product as well as the company. I asked for numerous references, and Berry Mechanical arranged for me to talk with a number of customers, as well as inspect 2 installations that were done locally.. One such installation was with the same equipment that I would be purchasing... Throughout it all, Alan and his company understand my concerns, and did everything in their power to ensure that I was satisfied and all my questions were answered... Berry Mechanical proved they wanted my business... From the day the contract was signed, the communication was fantastic... On the day of the installation in October of 2011, a full team came, and was there through the day to ensure that by the end of the day, I had heat and hot water... When they left, the only thing left was for Alan to come the next day and program the boiler for efficiency... I placed one call after the installation to question the sound of one of the pumps, and Alan came out the very next day... A change to the setting of the pump, and all was well... Alan even stated that if that didn't solve the problem, he would switch out the pump right then and there. It has been 1.5 years since installation, and the equipment has peformed flawlessly... The expected savings have been realized, and when routine service was performed in October of 2012, the person that came out was pleasant, professional, and efficient. Never have I been so satisfied with the products and services received. I have told numerous folks about Berry Mechanical, and I will certainly be calling on them again when it is time ot do some Air Conditioning work...

This is my third experience with Berry Mechanical. I wanted to supply heat to my basement workshop. Jamie came to size up the application needed and to suggest options. After considering those options I decided on a Rinnai gas fired direct vent wall furnace. The installation crew including installer, gas fitter, and electrician showed up on schedule with appropriate town permits in hand and installed the furnace and fired it up. All crew members were gentlemen and professional. The price was as advertised in the proposal and they cleaned up whatever debris was left. Again, very satisfied with this company and would recommend them. The furnace is great. It is now very comfortable to work in my shop during the cold winter months. Thanks to all.

Most people would recognize that there was little chance of a sale to us and leave. Jamie took time to answer all our questions, delve into the installation manual on the boiler, and identify areas he thought needed attention. Very impressive!
Description of Work: Jamie came to estimate installation of air conditioning for our 1805 home. When he saw the layout and current heating (hot water) he said he didn't do the kind of work we needed. Then he recommended a couple of companies that he'd heard good things about. While he was there we asked him to look at our heating system. He spent a lot of time and, after thoughtful study, passed on some critical information that affects how we proceed with some repairs. Once again, he clarified that he primarily works with higher efficiency units than ours so that we should seek the opinion of the company that installed the unit. He was very professional and knowledgeable.

Two years ago an energy audit revealed my huge old gas furnace was on it?s last legs. I got a couple bids, both saying I needed 2 furnaces--so I shelved the project until I'd learned more about what I actually needed. The house has several issues: it's large & drafty (difficult to insulate well), has a rental apartment (over an unheated garage/uses same gas meter), has half the heat ducts going through crawl space (ledge), and has a large living room addition (with it?s own furnace) that has a cathedral ceiling, 3 walls of windows, and heat ducts running through a crawl space too shallow to insulate). I did tons of research- furnace brands, options, installers, etc- and narrowed it down to 3 companies. Ironically, I ended up taking the highest bid?not because Berry Mechanical charged more for comparable equipment/labor, but because they/Jamie designed a 4-zone heat system that addressed each of my problem areas. Where all the others simply bid on replacing both furnaces, Jamie suggested using one American Standard (95%, 120,000 BTU) that had a control panel that adjusted 4 electronic dampers with 4 wireless thermostats. Tracking which ducts went where, and adding minimal new pieces, Jamie created 4 separate heat zones using dampers. I would be able to turn down the apartment temp when not in use, and the tenant could adjust for their particular needs. I could turn down the living room addition and close the door when not in use. I could adjust the heat in the rooms using (colder) crawl space ducts if it was particularly cold and the rooms were not in use. The 2-stage furnace he recommended, meant a minimum amount of heat is generated most the time, so I wouldn?t get the 2-3 minute blast of cold air that had been sitting in the approx 100 feet of crawl space ducts every time the furnace went on. All together, his design replaced 270,000 BTUs (combined) with only 120,000 BTUs. This done by using a 95% efficient furnace that, in combination with the zoning, would put out as little heat as was necessary?making for both an overall lighter utility load/cost, as well as increased comfort. There are no more drafty 'cold spots?, heat wasted in unused spaces, or whooshes of cold air when the furnace goes on. They know their stuff. Jamie?s 2-page bid listed every single piece of ductwork, damper part, and permit (no surprises). When I went back to the others and asked for the same kind of detail in their contracts, I got the ?it?s all in there? don?t worry about it? line that hardly makes for a solid contract. Jamie was a respectful person to deal with--extremely thorough, but never pushy. He had endless patience with my endless questions. The price I paid was exactly the price he bid. There were no unexpected issues or overlooked additional parts. He alone caught that the gas water heater would need a narrowed (4?) liner to create enough draw when the furnace exhaust pipe was eliminated (!), and had the parts and costs included in his bid. The day of the install, Bill and his team arrived before 7:30, laid down drop cloths, and wore boot covers. The electrician, plumber and person pulling permits were well synchronized. It took about 10 professionals, with 4 trucks loaded with (spare) parts, one day to do the majority of the work (drill foundation hole, take out old furnaces & install new one, install & insulate new ductwork, run new gas line, electrical hook up to control panel & dampers, disconnect/eliminate old exhaust pipe & install new ones, line chimney, and completely clean the area). The plumber even repaired a leaky pipe they came across. The following half-day, a couple guys finished installing and testing the dampers, placed the thermostats upstairs, and went over how to use them with me. They did not leave until I completely understood how to use the system, and said I was completely satisfied with the job.

after having a heating audit from mass saves, I was in desperate need of a new heating and hot water system. I received several quotes from different vendors....from individual plumbers that install heating systems to full service places like Berry Mechanical. After doing a bit of reseach over a couple of weeks span, I decided to go with Berry. From the first time that I had contact with the company, Jamie came out to give an assessment and he was very knowledgeable as well as patient with our many questions. He was an excellent point of contact and answered questions along the way on both email and cell phone. Their price was very competitive to others I received and they used top of the line equipment after doing my research. Also, another selling point for me was that they are local to me and can service the equipment that they install. (Some places do not service the equipment that they install as they need to rely on the manufacturer to service, but Berry does). They came on the day that they were scheduled to, right on time, they came with a crew of 4 guys and completely removed my old system and installed the new one while I was at work. They have also been great with helping me to recover my rebates for installing the high efficiency products. I would highly recommend them.

They installed a new high efficiency heating/hot water system which works amazingly well in a tiny space. They showed up promptly in the morning, cleared out all the old equipment, closed up the chimney and left no mess behind. They were on time, worked through the day and were finished in under the estimated time. There was a slight glitch in the set up that the crew couldn't manage so Allen Berry came out and took care of it. Everyone was pleasant, polite and very professional. I would use them again any time.

Arrived a few minutes early and seemed pleasant and diligent throughout the service call. Very helpful in diagnosing issues. Remained professional even while questioning what prior service provider had done incorrectly. Explained details thoroughly and clearly regarding the current issues and potential glitches down the road . Also pointed out positives. Resolved the problems quickly. Cleaned up after as well. Appreciated the assistance so promptly!
Description of Work: Service was excellent as they responded quickly because our furnace kept shutting off, leaving us cold. We appreciated that the problem of air in the pipes was recognized and fixed within a short time. It was also evident that the problems were due to issues created by a different heating company that had installed the furnace and were unsuccessful in dealing with the same shutting off problem when they returned last winter. They had bled the system incorrectly and turned off a pump that maintains the water/pressure level in the pipes. (if I had seen Angie's list back then, we would definitely have used a better rated company). Thus far we are pleased with the help provided by Berry Mechanical Services and would recommend them.

Jamie came to the house and did a thorough assessment of the house and current system, then came back with a quote to update the heating/ac system from a single-zone to multi-zone. I had several delays and lots of questions but he was great with getting back to me promptly and checking in when we were still in the planning stage. It seemed like it would be a huge undertaking to finish the job in 3 days, but when the day came, it was all hands on deck. The crew was very courteous and professional and they indeed got the job done in the time they said. The crew leader, Chris, did a great job of keeping me posted about the status of the job as they went. So far, the system is terrific - my house is very toasty! Oh and did I mention that their price was half the amount of the other quote I got. We did have a little confusion about one add-on, but as soon as I brought it up, Jamie looked into it, called me immediately, and we were able to get everything resolved quickly. I had chosen to call them due to their great reviews here on the list, and I'm happy to add another one to the pile - they did a fantastic job!
Description of Work: Berry Mechanical replaced my furnace and central air conditioning as well as updating my home's duct work, including adding a dryer vent, and replacing a hot water tank with a new tankless system.

They were kind of hard to get ahold of; I had to play a lot of telephone tag and leave a lot of messages. The work also had to be scheduled pretty far out because it was a "small job" they said. The day they came was after Sandy hit so I understand their being late. The work looks good. It's new so I only have ru. It once or twice but so far so good. Looks very well sealed and sturdy. They also painted the inside black so it doesn't catch your eye - nice touch. The only thing was the price seemed high for 4 hours of work, but no one else wanted the job so I'm happy to have it done. I would call the again when I need my furnace replaced, at least for an estimate.
Description of Work: They replaced two return ducts and one supply duct for my oil, forced hot air system.

Response from Berry Mechanical Services, Inc.
As the customer stated, smaller jobs can be very hard to take on let alone schedule & we certainly tried our best. If we quote the work, we've got to get it done in a timely fashion. Timing aside, it sounds like the execution was a winner here! One additional thing I might add about the customer's experience with Berry Mechanical was a diagnostic service call we executed on an oil boiler in the same house. It turned out that we couldn't fix the problem but we waived the diagnostic fee that is standard protocol as soon as a technician sets foot in your home. We then recommended an oil technician that could better address the issue. Just some added value here from Berry Mechanical!

I called Berry Mechanical after another heating/AC company told me the furnace was beyond repair and needed to be replaced. I had reason to be skeptical of this assessment, and I'm so glad I sought a second opinion. Alan and his partner listened to my story, and then immediately set about fixing things. They explained what they were doing as they were going along, and made it clear that while they couldn't be sure that all problems with the furnace would be solved, they expected it would be fine. They were right. The furnace has been working beautifully now for several days, and I can't believe my good fortune in finding Berry (through Angie's List--thank you!). Berry charged $100 for the visit and repairs. Buying a new furnace from the other place would have cost $4,000 or more.
Description of Work: Berry fixed a gas furnace in my home that had been "short-cycling" for a long time--that is, turning itself on and off frequently as it attempted and often failed to heat several rooms. This furnace has long been a source of frustration, but I assumed the problem was due to it being undersized. Wrong. Alan Berry and his partner analyzed what was going on, and seemed instinctively to know what was causing the problem--and as it turned out, it wasn't anything major. They addressed several issues, including beehives, that were hampering the furnace's performance. They were out of the house in less than a hour, and a problem that has long plagued me was resolved quickly and inexpensively.

I met with about 8 companies from Angie's list, about 5 of them quoted this job including Berry Mechanical and 3 others never got back. The quotes were all over the place, Berry wasn't the least expensive but they were by far the most knowledgeable and most professional. I met with Jamie, we walked through the house for about 1.5 hours, he pointed out details, ducting strategies, and design requirements that no other company mentioned. I left feeling that Jamie now only knows his stuff, but a job through them would be without headaches. Jamie took a few days to prepare the quote because unlike others, he actually plans out the system before he quotes. The quote came back and it was beautiful. About 10 pages detailing out every register size, duct component, line lengths, every single detail you can imagine. You can tell that Jamie calculated each register and return size perfectly for each room and floor to make sure the system was properly designed and you don't get obnoxious air flow or negative pressure. This math can be tricky, and many of the other quotes you can tell never put in any consideration to actually sizing the components. Another nice part about the quote is they even break out the parts strategically so when you go for rebates, you have your A/C quoted portion for the A/C rebate, water heater separate, furnaces, etc ... This is extremely convenient because not only do they install but they also handle the rebate paperwork for you to just sign at the bottom line. Amazing. Jamie quoted 2 American Standard furnaces (one for the basement and one for the attic). The basement furnace heated the downstairs and provided humidification to the whole house, and the attic furnace was variable speed with electrically controlled zone dampers to heat the 2nd and 3rd floor. He has two AC condensers one for each furnace. The one that served the 2nd/3rd floor was also 2 stages so it can operate at better efficiency when only serving one zone. The tankless water heater was the top of the line system that can handle 9.4 GPM of flow (more than enough for three simultaneous showers). Jamie pointed out how our town requires stretch code compliance for the ducts, so his quote included sealing every duct, insulating each, and testing each for leakage. Like I said, every single detail was thought of. I wanted to make sure we got the best price, keep in mind that quotes varied up to $36k for this job. Unfortunately I was fooled by another quote from a reputable angie's list company that was simillarly priced. It has been an enormous headache getting this other company to reach the detail and sophistication that Berry quoted. Catching them on all sorts of things that Jamie just outlined from day one. I regret not going with Berry Mechanical, if you are in the market for a complete HVAC system ... then learn from my mistake. Go with Jamie at Berry Mechanical.
Description of Work: This was a big HVAC job, converting an 1895 Victorian approx. 3,000 sqft over three floors from oil fired steam radiators to a gas fired forced air system for heat and A/C. We also were converting our domestic hot water system to a new high efficiency tankless water heater. The house needed the old systems removed, all new ducts installed, new gas lines, new electrical subpanel, and to be divided into 3 zones. I wanted to make sure we had a new system, that was quiet, balanced, and cost effective.
