Description of Work: I have two desktops and a laptop. Each of them had severe problems: the laptop was without a way of controlling the cursor, one of the desktops wouldn't boot up, the other desktop went into sleep mode if left unused and then had to be shut down and restarted. I was baffled by each. Jim found a way of controlling the cursor and now that works, solved the puzzle of the desktop that wouldn't boot, and very quickly saw what was wrong with the desktop that would go black when given the chance. I was impressed by his ingenuity and skill. He's done a lot of troubleshooting and is good at it. He charges $100/hour plus a travel charge. I think his efficiency results in a smaller bill than would be presented by someone less skillful. He has an easy-going manner that may disguise how knowledgeable he is.

Description of Work: Internet access from laptop computer was very slow and often disconnected. Jim suspected a virus or some form of malware. He cleaned the computer and it has been working fine since. He was very professional and responsive. Had the computer only a day or so.

 + -1 moreJim was terrific. He was very easy to work with, extremely professional and really knows what he is doing. When my dad's computer crashed a few days later, we had Jim fix that also. He was able to save data that we thought might have been lost. I highly recommend the Geek Handyman.
Description of Work: I found the Geek Handyman from Angie's List when my daughter's computer crashed. I left a message for Jim over the weekend and he promptly called me back on Monday morning. I dropped the computer off and he diagnosed it with a memory issue within a day. He ordered new memory for it and had it ready before the end of the week. He also provided some suggestions for improving performance on it.

 + -1 moreJim is amazing! When we turned on our Dell this morning it would not boot. Only black screen with cursor. My husband was ready to trash the computer when I found Jim on Angie's List. After a 20 minute phone conversation with various instruction our computer is fixed!!! Now I'm scheduling him to do a tune-up so that we don't run into the same problem again. I highly recommend him!!!
Description of Work: Instructed us to unplug the usb connections to the computer which fixed our problem with a blocking device driver.

Jim told us what the problem was with our old PC and made some recommendations to speed it up (primarily removing the current security software and suggesting a free alternative). He also took a lot of unused software off the machine, a lot of which we never removed because we were afraid to mess something up! He then set up a secure wireless system for us. We had a router we had already purchased over a year ago and DSL and Jim had some difficulties getting things to "talk to each other." He was there longer than planned but didn't charge us for an hour of his time that he spent fiddling with the routers! He was a very nice, friendly guy that we felt perfectly comfortable having in our home and we would definitely recommend Jim and his service to others!
Description of Work: Our 7 year old PC started running REALLY slow and needed a tune up and we had just bought a laptop and wanted to set up a wireless network, but my husband and I were not confident we could do this ourselves, so I saw "Geek Handyman" listed on Angie's List and emailed Jim. He called me later that day and we set up an appt for him to come the following Saturday. He was a really nice, personable guy and came on time and was really easy to talk to.

Dropped laptop off myself, discussed problems with Jim, who gave many helpful suggestions, including how to efficiently purchase second-hand replacement parts to keep laptop running at reasonable rates (keeping in mind that a comparable new replacement laptop would not cost all that much these days).
Description of Work: Performed repair services on a four year old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Services included: Diagnostic of major problems with laptop, including inability to boot and garbled LCD screen image; scan and repair of defective hard disk sectors to allow laptop to boot; replacement of defective video card with a used card that I purchased and supplied myself (as recommended by Jim). Updating of drivers that caused laptop to shut down improperly (very annoying problem.) Other small tweaks to optimize laptop performance.

 + -1 moreThe computer consultant called to indicate that he was running a little behind. He arrived within 10 minutes of the scheduled time. The work took a little longer than he estimated but not excessively so. He and I anticipated that there would be a few glitches since the desktop is a PC and the laptop is a Mac. There were a few glitches but the computer consultant resolved them quickly. He was courteous and welcomed my questions as he was installing the network. He completed the set up and the network is working fine.
Description of Work: I wanted to set up a home network which will would allow my desktop and laptop to connect to our DSL connection and to share our laser printer.

 + -1 moreAfter making a same-week appointment with Jim, I attempted to clean the scanner bed one last time myself and it finally dislodged the dirt particle that was causing the line in my scans. I did not need to use Jim's services this time, although he was very helpful and courteous on the phone, and returned my call very promptly.
Description of Work: Contacted Jim about an issue with my all-in-one printer. Although printer hardware isn't something he often works on, he offered to take a look at the issue and even did some troubleshooting research on the internet in between phone calls with me. He offered an hour's worth of labor for $50, which sounded very reasonable (Geek Squad wanted to charge me a minimum of $159).

 + -1 moreCould not be better. With regard to the question: "Would you hire this company for a future job?", we already did as our 2nd PC died within a few days of this incident, and he fixed it again.
Description of Work: Our desktop was not functioning. I phone Jim who was very responsive. We took the CPU to him, dropped it, went to the Mall and got a call that all was fixed, charing us $50 for one hour labor and $50 for the part. Unit works perfectly well (The manufacturer had quoted $275 just to "have a look").

 + -1 moreIt went extremely well. I got more than I required for a reasonable price. He was able to schedule an appointment within a few days of my call. He came when he said he would. He was friendly, a good teacher, and very knowledgeable about computers. I have no doubt that if something went wrong with what he did on the computer, he would take responsibility for it and fix it.
Description of Work: Jim came to my home and spent about 2 hours helping me develop a better solution for excessive spam and figuring out if Retrospective Express was actually backing up my data. In the process, he taught me things about using my Mac and fixed another minor problem.

Description of Work: Jim came out to fix a problem I had created in a back-up program he had previously installed. I had deleted some important files, and couldn't get the program to work. Jim tried at first to help me over the phone to save me the cost of a visit, but it became apparent that I did need him to come out. After he came over, it took him literally 15 minutes to figure out my (several) mistakes and fix them. Jim actually tried to make me pay for only 1/2 an hour, but I did insist on paying for a full hour.

 + -1 moreJim asked me a number of questions on the phone to try to solve my problem, but he needed to do an on-site visit. He was able to come the same day which was extremely helpful as I was simply stuck. I firmly believe in using experts, and Jim is one that I would recommend. He didn't have answers off the top of his head, but he was able to review and poke around and quickly identify the problem. He also make a couple of small adjustments to my computer-display, which make its use more convenient. I am a little bit away from his main geographic area so the price above included travel time also.
Description of Work: Jim was able to identify a software set-up problem that I had in uploading files to a web host for a website. He also was willing to spend some time additionally to look into another problem which I can now probably solve on my own--we agreed it was too time-consuming during his visit to pursue the second problem.

 + -1 moreFantastic! Jim was easy to get a hold of in person on the phone, arrived on time, and stayed until the job was done. He encountered problems installing the software provided by Verizon on my old Windows 98 system, but he had software with him that fixed the problem. We encountered more problems finding a phone line that worked with the DSL, but he got on the phone with Verizon to troubleshoot. He expected he would only he here one hour, but was here longer due to the problems encountered. Still, he didn't charge me more than the quoted price. He explained how wireless would work best for me, and I look forward to having him back to install that when the time comes.

 + -1 moreJim did an excellent job from start to finish. He was polite on the phone and in person and arrived early for our scheduled appointment. The virus was tricky to remove so he offered to take the computer to his home so I wouldn't have to wait around while he ran programs to check the computer. The next day he delivered the computer to my house and explained in as much detail as I wanted exactly what he had done. The computer runs beautifully now and he even set up accounts for everyone in my family to avoid a future attack.

Jim recommended a card reader and I could not remember what the specifications were, I emailed him and he responded in a timely manner including the links to the card readers. I would highly recommend using Jim for any PC setups or any problems with your PC. His prices are reasonable.

He even saved me money by replacing an expensive program with two free ones. He is efficient and effective. I can't speak highly enough.
Description of Work: Jim identified the cause of my computer's problems and recommended solutions. He then implemented these after my approval and showed me how to use the new anti-virus and anti-spyware programs he installed. In addition, he ordered new memory for me and installed same day.

Knew just what to do and what steps to walk me through to do it so we could solve the problem immediately over the phone. Reasonably priced: $35/hour (not the cheapest, but very reasonable). Trusting: He sent me a bill after we solved the problem, and trusted that I would send him a check. In it for the long run: he's not out to make a quick buck -- he wants to build long term relationships.

 + -1 moreJim responded very quickly both times I called him. He showed up on time for both my brother and me. He was professional, a good and patient teacher and very knowledgeable and resourceful. His prices were very reasonable, in comparison to some other companies I called (I prefer to let him give out his rates and am choosing not to put what we paid in this listing). Jim also took the time after he left (and after I paid him!) to email me some additional information on issues he chose to look into further. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone in need of computer repair services or tutoring.
Description of Work: Jim fixed and/or identified several computer issues for us that would have taken days to fix through Dell phone support. Issues included: serious error messages popping up all the time, inability to open and respond to Microsoft Outlook messages and lost address book, computer rebooting everytime I tried to shut down, and an annoying Photo Album pop-up advertisement (that turned out to be bundled with Photo Album). Jim also helped my brother, a novice computer user, fix an anti-virus software issue and taught him how to email and perform some simple computer operations.
