Called the company first-thing on a summer Monday morning for an over-the-weekend central air failure. They called back before 9:30, and the tech was out at the house by noon. It turned out that the coil was seriously frozen, and needed to thaw before further diagnostics and work could proceed. A second visit was scheduled for Wednesday; the tech arrived promptly within the provided time window. The company did not assess a second call charge despite there being two visits, which I thought very fair. The second tech identified the probable source of the problem fairly quickly, discussed my options in an understandable way and with sufficient detail for me to make a relatively informed decision, promptly executed the repairs, and gave me some advice about ways in which I could solve a not-totally-related issue. The company accepts credit cards, which is extremely convenient. Everyone I interacted with at the company - two service techs, an answering service, and a service coordinator - were both pleasant and professional. I will probably go to this company first when my system needs to be replaced in a few years.

I originally contacted Pioneer about replacing an existing ductless mini split air conditioner that wasn't working well. Over the course of several months, two Pioneer representatives (a sales person and the owner himself) came to my residence on two different occasions to examine the existing system and take measurements. Despite the claims on their website of their experience with these types of systems, it seemed to me they were uncertain whether they could do the job, telling me they'd have to go back to the office, do some research, think about it, etc., and would get back to me. I heard nothing from them for weeks. I called and emailed their office several times but their sales person was never available and never called me back. Eventually I did receive a proposal from the sales person, but the statement of work was completely different from what needed to be done -- it looked as if they'd mixed my job up with someone else's. I returned the proposal and asked them to revise it to accurately state what work they were proposing to do and how much it would cost. At this point I did not have a good feeling about the company's competence for doing this type of work, so I also asked them to promise in writing that the new system would meet the manufacturer's performance specifications and that any cuts in walls or ceilings they had to make to run pipes or wires would be repaired. Subsequently I got a call from the company's owner telling me he could not do the job after all and that his company, although it followed "standard trade practices," did not make the kind of performance and workmanship promises I was expecting. Fair enough. I have no problem with a company that turns down a job because it thinks it cannot meet the customer's requirements. But what bothers me is that if I had accepted the original carelessly written proposal (which, by the way, required payment of over half the cost up front), I would have had little recourse if the system did not work per spec or if I was left with interior damage. So my advice to anyone contemplating doing business with this company is to read their proposal very carefully before signing a contract and be prepared to assume a lot of risk if the job does not go as planned.

We feel it is important to respond this statement with further detail as to why things occurred in the manner they did. It should be said, it is always unfortunate when a proposal does not substantiate into an active job, but this was a decision that was not made lightly. I write this at the risk of sounding argumentative, but it seems necessary for any future reader to understand why we declined this job. We take our work very seriously and it is important to convey that we would NOT offer a proposal to perform work that we felt would not meet the manufacturers performance standards after installation. We have turned down big jobs for this reason. Both legally and ethically we (as the “expert”) are responsible for the jobs we perform and moreover the last thing we want is an unsatisfied customer that we are bound to for the life of the product. This would be a lose, lose for everyone and it’s never worth taking a job under these parameters. This specific project was a bit more complicated than your average mini split installation in a single family home. This is an historic building converted to individual living spaces for multiple owner occupants. The original equipment was installed in a manner that made it very difficult to simply abandon and start fresh. The only way to replace these units was to use the existing line-set that had been buried in interior walls years ago. This is NOT standard practice, for many reasons. Some of which include accessing the line sets for future diagnostics, repair and replacement. We mention this for two reasons. 1. Preparing a quote is much like any other home improvement; the devil is in the details. Painting a wall is not at all challenging, however the prep work can be. This quote required a lot of prep work. We had to ensure that the existing line-set COULD be reused at this site. This meant researching the sizing of the old units and checking compatibility with the new, also if the refrigerant and associated oils could be adequately flushed to ensure proper function of the new units. We researched equipment, spoke to reps and our salesman worked directly with me, the owner to ensure every detail was covered. All of this takes time. 2. Due to the confines of how the installation had to be performed, there was no way to avoid opening up some finished areas of the walls/ceilings. One unit in particular was going to be removed, which would clearly leave a hole where the old lines had come through. This was stated and obvious. It is admittedly very possible we did not explain this well enough to the customer just how much time goes into a proposal like this, and that is our fault. What this review does not state is that we were asked to provide an estimate for two different units in the same building. They had requested we consider giving a more competitive price if the work was done at both units at the same time. Although there are two different owners, this is not an unreasonable request, however this also requires not just one, but three contracts be written for proposal. (One for each tenant individually, and another for both together.) This method of proposal also requires communication with each tenant. We sent a proposal out which included all of the intended equipment to be installed and the price of the project. Our contract includes standard information about what each party is responsible for, including items beyond the scope of our expertise. We clearly state that we do not perform repair work but we do everything within our power to avoid damage and things of that nature. It is often necessary in this industry to defer residual repairs to another industry expert. For example, if we need to vent a furnace up through a roof, we let the customer know that as part of our work, they [Member Name Removed] need to account for a roofer to come and do the cut and sealing of the protruding vent. There are times when people need an electrician to expand a panel for adding a hot water tank or hiring a finish carpenter to repair an area that had to be altered as part of an installation. We do our very best to make the customer aware of ANY additional expense they may incur as part of having that specific HVAC work done. We believe in doing what we do well, and leaving other skills to those who are professionals in that trade. We [Member Name Removed] not over extend or over commit ourselves to work outside of our scope. Twenty years in business has proven that this is the sound approach. One would never ask the person doing their bathroom tile to reinstall the toilet and vanity. Would you really want a tile professional working on your toilet? We were dismayed at the response we received. The customer re-worded our entire contract, changing both the boiler plate legal language and the added disclaimers we include. He updated it to say we would repair all sheetrock/plasterwork to its exact state and even asked to match the existing paint color. In addition to our entire contract being re-written, he asked us to include a different size unit than one of the ones we recommended and re-price it accordingly, and stated, if all of this is agreeable, “I think we have a deal.” As part of these revisions there was specific language stating the Pioneer would “install, test and deliver a fully operational system that meets all manufacturer’s functional and performance specifications.” We have no issue with this statement, as this is our commitment on every job, however by us declining this job as a whole, it appears the customer wrote up this review to make it appear as if we could not commit to those standards, and that is NOT the case. We encourage and consider any recommendations brought to us by our customers, but at the end of the day, we are responsible for the function of the unit installed, this includes sizing the equipment properly, so in this case we felt it best to part ways. We could not and would not commit to a new contract (written by the customer) that would bind us to equipment other than what we recommended and committed us to performing tasks beyond the scope of our industry and our expertise. Beyond contracts and discussions, there is a certain level of trust and respect a contractor and a customer must have for one another. We felt as though there was a lack of trust for us and our work conveyed by the customers actions and that is no way to start a relationship. Not every contractor and customer “mesh” in every situation and that is okay, however it is important to know when to acknowledge that and respectfully decline any further work. The customer was correct that our web site explains our expertise in Mitsubishi Ductless-Mini Splits, and we are proud of our accomplishments. We are an Elite Diamond Dealer and our technicians and installers are factory trained to install and repair these units. This parting was not based on our ability to install the equipment. We do ask for a deposit amount, typically close to half of the job total, this is clearly explained in every contract. Just to note, we have never in 20 years kept a deposit for a job we didn’t perform, so buyer need not beware. The deposit simply covers the purchasing of the equipment from our supplier and solidifies a commitment by the customer to do the job on the agreed upon dates. When I explained to the customer we would not be doing the job, he said we should expect a bad Angie’s List review. I would prefer to part ways amicably, understanding not every job works out, and not air all the details publicly but when the reputation of my business is called into question I have no choice but to add perspective to the situation. I have built this business from the ground up and we have not succeeded for 20 years by giving careless bids and performing sub-par work. We wish the customer the best moving forward with his project. Sincerely, Timothy Gochinski President, Pioneer Heating & Cooling

So after we determined that my furnace could not be repaired within a few days I had an estimate for a new furnace and a furnace/water heater combination, high efficiency Bosch and wall hung. They were able to find an install date during a very busy season 2 weeks from the time we determined the furnace needed to be rplaced. They called and told me when they woudl be coming, were extremely pleasant and willing to answer all questions, clean up very well and generally were a good as could be. The office staff were also extremely helpful and easy to get hold of for questions. When I mentioned that there was a rebate available they pulled up the forms, filled out the parts they could and gave me all the documentation I needed. It was a really difficult time with no furnace for a month but I really believe they did the best they were able to and kept me informed at all times.
Description of Work: Initially, I had my carbon monoxide alarm go off. The fire department came and turned off the water heater and furnace and ventilated the house. The next day I called (Monday) on my way home and Pioneer said they could come Tuseday AM to see if the furnace was ok or not. They came and found the ventilation pipe was plugged. They ordered the parts and we discussed what would happen if it turned out that the furnace could not be repaired. They replaced the vent and another part was defective. They ordered that one and tried it and no go.

I made an appointment with a very friendly service coordinator. SHe discussed their practices and walked me through the service contracts, fees and options before scheduling a technician. It's hot! So, they are obviously very busy. She warned me I might not get an appointment for a couple of days. Next day, Scott, a very professional service tech, called about an hour before arriving to make sure I would be around. He showed up 10 minutes early, great! He did a quick evaluation and asked lots of questions about how we used the AC and our past experiences. Then he cracked open the unit and discovered the root of our problems, mice had gotten in and made camp. They chewed up all the internal wiring and disconnected some important circuits. Scott replaced all that important wiring in about an hour. He made several recommendations for keeping the mice away and told me what I could expect from my system in the future. I highly recommend these folks. They are courteous, respectful, friendly and performed the work in a timely and professional manner. Thanks Pioneer.

Hello, We regret to have to say this is true in part. We did not provide the level of service we strive for in your situation, and truly we are sorry for that. The appointment in question was set up on an evening close to the Christmas holiday. It was on our planner and everything was in order to come for the consultation. The appointment was simply overlooked on the day scheduled. This almost never happens and we have no excuse except to say we messed up, and we are very sorry. We are concerned about you attempting to reach us and not being able to as the gentleman scheduled can not find a missed call on his cell and we have no record of a call at our office or with our emergency phone service. This is not a situation we would ever choose to not respond to- we missed the mark and we are completely responsible for missing the appointment. Since this incident we have had multiple communications with the occupant of the home and are providing an estimate for the work requested. We can not change what happened but we will use this situation as a leaning tool to help us provide better service to all of our customers in the future. Sincerely, Pioneer Heating & Cooling Team

Excellent. Tim and crew were on top of the job at all times - arriving when they said and working efficiently and professionally. They also cleaned-up after themselves, so that there was little evidence that they were there. There were a few household physical problems that arose which Tim got his team to resolve immediately as soon as they were recognized/. Aside from the slight mistiming with the water heater then the furnace delay in arrival, the Pioneer crew worked with expertise. Tim was also very responsive and patient with my many queries on brand comparison and warranties. All in all, a great job. Thanks, guys!

A year ago we were considering having mini splits (Mitsubishi cooling units) installed. Tim responded right away and came immediately for our free estimate. He gave us excellent information in order to make a decision. After contemplating, we decided to put this off for a while. Tim fully respected our decision. A year later, in May, we decided that the time was right, and Tim once again responded immediately and came for another free estimate. Once we decided to go for it, he scheduled the job around our needs/schedule. He used his own workers, who were very informative and tolerant of questions we had during the day of installation. They did the job in one full day, and fully explained how to operate the new system. They were in no rush, and wanted to make sure that we were totally satisfied before they left. Note that the workers wore plastic shoe covers whenever they came into the house so they wouldn't track in dirt (sometimes these little things make a big difference). Also, clean up was meticulous. Within about a week later, Tim came back to have a final inspection, and to see if we had any more questions. It is important to note that Tim scheduled this final visit after 5:00 in order to accommodate our daytime work ours, which we really appreciated. Also, clean up was meticulous. We absolutely love our new cooling system. We have already recommended Tim and Pioneer Heating and Cooling to others, and will continue to do so.

everything went smoothly and on schedule. Tim and Mike worked hard to accommodate our preferences for reuse of old cast iron registers, and creatively solved vent placements in an old house ( circa 1869). The whole crew worked hard and everything was cleaned up and working on schedule. The central air is far superior to the window units we were using.

Setting up the appointment was easy on line and the company was responsive to questions that I raised in my email to them. The provider was on time - possibly a bit early. He was polite and friendly. As I stated above, he explained how my system works, tested things, and pointed out potential trouble spots. He answered all of my questions and was informative in his explainations. Fortunately my system that is over 10 years old did not require any repairs at this time - I was not sold repairs that I do not need! I am glad to have this positive experience with a company that can provide repairs if/when needed since I would not have otherwise known who to call. (The company that installed the system is no longer in business).
Description of Work: He informed me about the mechanics of my "tankless" water heater/furnace, tested various mechanisms, and pointed out potential trouble spots with this type of system. He tested the workings of various components and looked at things that might need repair in the future. He answered my questions about the function of this type of system and assured me that my water temperature was within expected standards.

They were good. It's kind of questionable whether they should have caught that in the tuneup, I don't know if they could have predicted that. But, they were super nice and I don't have any complaints.

He is very very good. I bought a condominium and I have gas heat and hot water but the gas company has a thing called guardian care but they don’t service the furnace. Pioneer will service your equipment once a year, they come once for the air conditioner and they come again in the fall for the furnace. And that’s part of your contract but the gas company doesn’t do the service. Pioneer is really a good company. This year they agreed to do two condominiums, the one I was selling they did in the fall and this one has already been checked out. In the spring they will come here and do the air conditioning here. They are very cooperative about taking care of both places as part of a single contract. They were very good. The guy who came on a regular basis was just great. He was respectful and professional.
