Description of Work: Provided a kitchen design for 500.00 with 250.00 toward the project if you went with the company. Advertised as budget freindly. Very responsive to setting up appointment for design and produced nice design. Just way over budget we projected. Subsequent rework of design was still over the cost of other bids. No other estimate and design required we pay money up front other than home depot and that was cost free after attending a class.

Response from IKITCHENS ETC LLC
We were saddened that this client was not satisfied with the service we provided. However, as clearly stated on our website and in the design contract that was signed by the homeowner, the $500 design fee goes towards the production of the kitchen design and assistance with specification of products. This contracted service included travel time, on-site measurement of the existing kitchen, multiple meetings, phone calls, e-mails, and production of a design. In this particular case, we actually produced three distinct designs (plus a couple of variations) in an attempt to meet the client’s expectations. We spent 25 hours on the design phase of the project without any additional fees even though we were only contracted for 8 hours. According to the review, we “produced a nice design”. We were actually told by the client that she liked two of the designs very much and found us very creative in solving certain challenges in her space. Sometimes, a client’s vision for their project and their budget aren’t in sync. This is often the case with an older home, where the infrastructure needs to be updated to meet current building code. Of course, the cost for a project is also very dependent on the scope of work. In this case, the scope extended past the kitchen remodel to include new windows, changes to an adjacent bathroom, and addition of space to the kitchen from an adjacent hall way, and the many code upgrades that are required by law. Some of these investments make a home safer and are hidden away in the infrastructure. These are not the exciting aspects of a new kitchen, such as cabinetry, appliances, counter tops. None the less, they are necessary when a remodel is tackled. After the design phase was complete, we worked on producing an estimate for the project. We put together three different estimates but were unable to meet the budgetary constraints. In a separate e-mail, the client communicated that they had six different contractors put together estimates for their project (presumably based on the design we supplied). In the same e-mail to us, it was stated “You were definitely second place and I enjoyed working with you. The first choice was considerably less and included the closet removal and floor. Hope it turns out OK.” In conclusion, it appears that we provided a good design which was the service that was paid for. A good design is the foundation of a successful remodeling project. It is the starting point for the next phase of a remodel which is building an estimate for the actual project. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to meet the customer’s budget for the construction portion of the project. We believe we charge a fair price for the high quality services we provide. After three Angie’s List Super Service awards and multiple A-ratings, it seems like the majority of Angie’s List members who have worked with iKitchens agree.

Description of Work: I filled out a form online to get an estimate for a kitchen remodeling. Lou Ann responded quickly, came out at our convenience and spent a lot of time giving us information about her and her company's qualifications then going over what we were looking for in a kitchen reno. She emailed us a design very quickly, responded quickly to the changes we wanted and has been very easy to get hold of with questions and concerns. Final decisions have not been made yet=I will update things when things are completed.

Job didn't go through
Description of Work: I contact Rich Carl to quote on a job on my cottage that I have been "under the gun" to complete. My other builder was not able to do the job at the time in the time frame I needed it to be done and I was eager to find another contractor. I would strongly have considered Rich given his prompt and professional response however, the other builder came through at last minute and I decided to give the job to him since he was familiar with the project. Rich was very clear about payment and service terms which, after dealing with the contractor I had been dealing with, was a great relief. I would recommend him for anyone looking to have clarity at the outset of a project and will certainly consider him as a potential contractor of my next job. Good Luck RIch..

Description of Work: Not a happy customer at all. Paid for the measurement and cabinet layout service. Since their original quote for installing Ikea kitchen was higher than the kitchen cost I decided to invest many hours/days/weeks to install it myself. As I progressed I realized the service provided was very basic with minimal details so you would eventually end up using their installation service. When I asked about what to do as the layout actually blocks some outlets/switch/vent the response was "it is just a kitchen layout" while you need to take care of all the aspects of cabinet installation. There were some minor design flaws that I have been able to correct myself. At some stage I wanted to use iKitchens services for a day or two to complete the installation, the quote for a day worth of work was outrages. Since they are based in Falmouth they ask 4 hrs (!) as their transportation fee... Really?! Ended up doing it mostly myself with the help of 2 handymen that charged me the price of iKitchens transportation for a full day of work.

Response from IKITCHENS ETC LLC
The customer contracted with us on 6/11/12 for a measurement and design service. This service consists of 7 hours of design time (including travel). For this service, the customer paid $450. We produced 4 designs and spent approximately 30 hours between the travel, the on-site visit, phone and e-mail consultations with the customer. We did not charge the customer for any excess time (at $50/hr) even though they agreed to pay for it per the design contract. This generosity was our first mistake. The design contract (which they signed) states “It is understood by both parties that designs created under this contract are not exact engineering documents. No construction or engineering documents will be provided as part of this agreement.” A copy of this design contract is available on our website (http://www.ikitchensetc.com/2011/images/pdfs/sample_design_contract_rev_2_05012012.pdf). We can produce very detailed engineering documents but it takes a considerable amount of time and money. This client was on a very tight budget and was not interested in this additional service. After the design was complete, the customer requested a quote on installation services. We produced a quote which was higher than they wanted to pay. To save money, they decided to install it themselves. We continued to answer phone calls from them with questions on how to install their kitchen even though our contractual obligation was complete. When they reached the point where they had exceeded their skill level, they contacted us about our DIY Assist service. This service is available to provide homeowners with assistance with completing their projects. As clearly stated on our website , the customer pays per hour including actual travel (http://www.ikitchensetc.com/2011/images/pdfs/sample_design_contract_rev_2_05012012.pdf). We estimated the travel time from our facility to their property in Needham at 2 hours each way. Mapquest shows the travel time at 1 hour and 21 minutes without traffic. For anyone who drives around Boston, no traffic is a rare occurrence! In any case, the customer only pays for the actual travel time and time on-site. We have had several customers utilize this service without complaints. After we had produced a contract and scheduled our master carpenter to come in, the customer decided they didn’t want to pay our published rate. They wanted us to drive for 4 hours without paying for either our employee or our vehicle. We had scheduled an on-site day for Monday and they cancelled on Saturday. It appears that she decided to use unlicensed and uninsured handymen to help complete her kitchen. Naturally, their rate is considerably lower than our licensed and insured master carpenters. It is unfortunate for the homeowner that she did not read or understand the clearly stated deliverables of the design contract. It is unfortunate for our company that we continued to support her, without asking for the additional fees that we were entitled to request. Despite the comments that were posted, we sincerely hope our customer is happy with the final result of her well-designed kitchen.

We contacted them because they were recommended by IKEA. They fit us in their busy schedule just a week after I contacted them. Time was of the essence because the property was being appraised for a re-fi that week. These guy were great. They worked with me because I had a very low budget. Even though I wasn't spending lots of cash they gave us all their attention and expertise. They finished in TWO DAYS! From those very thin IKEA boxes where nothing is assembled to a beautiful kitchen in 2 days. It was amazing. Everything was done so exacting. No gaps, super tight. I'm going to do my big kitchen in my full time home next year and I'm definitely having them do it. I've recommended them to a few friends and I hope they'll be calling Rich and Lou Ann very soon.

Lou Ann was very professional and arrived on time, I told her my budget and ideas, she took measurements, showed me some samples, etc.. She got back to me quickly with the drawings and design, which looked good, but her estimate was higher than my budget and didn't include flooring. We went over the design via phone and flushed out more details. The budget just kept going up. The price she wanted to charge for putting the cabinets together and hanging them represented 1/3 of the entire budget. This was too steep, in my opinion. I decided to do a DIY job using their design. Before I went to IKEA to order everything, I noticed some inconsistencies in the parts and appliances sheet she gave me, I had to have her go back over it and fix it. I emailed them before I began the project, asking if they would be available for a "DIY Assist" during my installation and they never responded. During installation, using their design, we discovered many design flaws. One corner cabinet door only opens halfway because there is no room for the door to open without hitting the door next to it. She had a specific microwave in her plan (which I bought) that showed it was flush with the cabinets on either side in the drawings. As installed, it hung 2 inches below the cabinets around it and was only 16 inches over the gas burner grate. This was obviously unworkable and according to my plumber is a fire code violation. I had to return the microwave and buy a hood vent. The pantry door didn't open fully because it was too close to the wall. I had to turn the door around so it works, but it looks funny because the top door opens one way and the bottom door opens the other way. I have since contacted them with my complaints about the design and they refuse to take any responsibility for the design flaws. If I had to do this again I would go to IKEA and work with the design person for free. Bottom line- If you are going to hire these people make sure you have them do the work, because then they can fix the problems in their designs for you.
Description of Work: I hired iKitchens etc. to do a kitchen design and potentially complete the remodel using IKEA brand products. The kitchen design included a top down drawing with measurements and 3d computer generated representations of the remodeled kitchen as well as a parts/appliance list for what to order from IKEA.

Response from IKITCHENS ETC LLC
We have been a proud, certified installer of IKEA cabinetry for 6 years and have hundreds of happy homeowners that have used our design services and our carpentry services. We are sad that this client was not happy with the kitchen that she installed based on our design. However, there are several points that need to be clarified. 1. In the Kitchen Design contract that was signed by the client on 9/13/11, it states “It is understood by both parties that designs created under this contract are not exact engineering documents. No construction or engineering documents will be provided as part of the agreement”. Our designs are to be used as a guideline for the kitchen layout, not exact instructions as to how the kitchen is to be installed. That being said, we have designed hundreds of kitchens for skilled DIY’ers without any complaints. It is critical that the individual doing the installation of a kitchen make himself or herself familiar with the design and verify the installation plan. For this particular kitchen, the design plan was not followed as drawn. 2. The design contract was for 8 hours of design time. Because of our clients’ budget and constraints, we recorded over 12 hours of design time and did not charge the client the extra fees that we were due per the signed contract. 3. We did quote on the project but understand that our quote exceeded the client’s budget and respected the fact that she decided to do-it-herself. We support this approach for our clients and even offer a DIY assist option that can be utilized if the project becomes problematic for them. In a 12/8/12 e-mail from the client she stated, “I may utilize the DIY Assist option you offer on your website depending on your availability and our need for it”. We did not hear anything further from the client until 1/4/12, after she had completed the installation. At that time, we were alerted to what she believed were three design flaws which are re-stated in this posting. 4. The first issue was a blind corner wall cabinet that would not open properly. The client’s stated design objective was to maximize storage. Therefore, we put a 24” wall cabinet in a space that would normally call for a 21” cabinet so as not to waste 3” of cabinet space. The client was informed that in order for the cabinet to open properly, approximately 1” of molding around the window would have to be trimmed. Again, the design is not a construction document so it does not specifically state that. However, it can be clearly seen in the drawings we supplied that the cabinet does go into the molding. She did not trim the molding and therefore, the door does not open properly. If we had been alerted to this problem before the final molding was installed and the tile backsplash was completed, it could have been easily fixed. 5. The second concern was the distance between microwave and the cooktop. The client stated that as designed there would be only 16” over the gas burner grate. In an e-mail on 1/4/12, the client alleges that there needs to 24” between the bottom of the microwave and the cooktop according to her plumber. This is absolutely wrong. The 2009 Massachusetts building code section M1901.1 states “Freestanding or built-in ranges shall have a vertical clearance above the cooking top of not less than 30 inches to unprotected combustible material. Reduced clearances are permitted in accordance with the listing and labeling of range hoods or appliances”. First of all, the metal bottom of a microwave is not a combustible material. Secondly, the installation instructions for the microwave purchased clearly states that it can be installed at a height of 16” off the cooking surface. Almost all over-the range microwave instructions say they can be installed at a height of 15-18” or less over a cooktop. This also meets National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) guidelines. In fact, the IKEA Framtid microwave could even be installed 6” off the cooking surface according to the manufacturer’s specification! We explained this in our e-mail response 40 minutes after we received the client’s e-mail but she had already completed her kitchen, returned the microwave and installed the hood. 6. The third issue was the pantry door not opening properly to allow the drawers to pull out. When we talked to the client on January 4th to help troubleshoot this problem, we discovered that she had purchased and installed the wrong hinges. We gave her the correct hinge part number but this appears to not have solved the problem. The pantry with pull-out drawers is difficult to install and adjust properly but should have worked in this space. We also suggested that she could flip the door around which is the route she decided to take. We had no more correspondence until Saturday, February 18, 2012. She contacted us once again via e-mail to voice the same concerns which we had answered back on January 4th. This time she also stated “Due to the problems I did have with the design I am requesting a $100 rebate from you.” She forwarded photos of the problem areas in her kitchen and we saw it had not been correctly installed, per the design and per IKEA recommendations. We felt that we had already exceeded our contractual obligations and did not grant her request for $100 due to the reasons stated above. She was informed of this in an e-mail on Sunday, February 19, 2012. Five days later, on February 24th, this negative review was posted on Angie’s List. If the client had communicated with us during the installation process, these problems could have all been avoided. Instead, she installed and finished the kitchen, including a tile backsplash, without addressing these issues. The allegation that we designed a kitchen that incorporated a fire code violation is especially disturbing. Even though we have explained the building code to her twice in e-mails and once on the phone, she continues to repeat this false information. A five minute call to the local building department would verify what we know is true. We pride ourselves on doing quality work at affordable prices which leads to satisfied clients. It is unfortunate that a lack of communication from the client during the project has ended with her dissatisfaction.

We'd been interested in updating the kitchen at our summer place, which was original to the house. We had identified IKEA as a good source for reasonably priced and well designed cabinets, but two issues held us back from purchasing and installing ourselves: lack of time and lack of skill. Also, ordering from IKEA could be easier. By chance, we found iKitchens online. We had our ideas about layout -- the kitchen did not allow for a lot of options -- but we asked iKitchens to give us their design input (for a fee). They were very helpful, particularly in identifying what cabinet configuration would be the best. Once we settled on a plan, iKitchens ordered everything from IKEA. They demo'd the old kitchen, installed a pine plank floor, installed the cabinets and the appliances. They brought in a guy to do the tile work (backsplash) and another contractor to install a Formica counter. iKitchens communicated with us regularly -- they set up a Google calendar that we could access to show their plan for the project -- and they pretty much stuck to it. There were two points where we had issues: (a) ceiling holes for high hats were cut to an incorrect size (according to the electrician); and (b) the tiled backsplash was not installed according to plan. Regarding the ceiling, I can't say that that this was iKitchen's fault. As to the backsplash, iKitchens concluded that the backsplash tile could not be installed as planned and therefore told the tiler to do something else. We weren't happy with the alternate plan. That said, iKitchens offered us a meaningful credit to resolve the issue. Overall, we were very pleased with the finished product, as well as iKitchen's design work, communication, punctuality and adherence to schedule.
Description of Work: iKitchens is a husband and wife team that will design, order and install an IKEA kitchen. We had looked at IKEA cabinetry for a long period before we found iKitchens. We worked with them on design. Based on our cabinet selection and the design plan, they ordered cabinets, sink and all the other stuff one needs from IKEA. They recommended a local appliance retailer from whom we ordered a range and fridge. IKitchens installed the IKEA cabinetry, installed a pine plank floor and a breadboard ceiling. IKitchens recommended a tile guy. We used our regular electrician and plumber and painted ourselves.
