Services we offer
High end kitchen and bathroom remodels. Fine and finish carpentry. Windows and doors. Custom cabinetry. Cabinetry design and sales. Tile work, painting, electrical, plumbing, flooring (hardwood install, re-finishing, and laminate) and MORE!!
Tom as usual is very responsive and professional. He handles changes and additions well. His whole team does great work and are polite and a pleasure to interact with. The plastering crew is fantastic- delivering faster than anticipated with quality work. The electrician and carpentry crew also does great work and were very responsive to feedback in order to make us totally happy with the final product. The final cost was aligned with expectations. They did a good job cleaning up at the end of each day. I am a very involved and meticulous homeowner and am very happy with the project overall. If possible with future projects it would be beneficial to have more clarity on day to day expectations during the project but that is a very small comment.
Description of Work: Replace 8 solid interior doors- includes French closet door in foyer. Install new double window. Blueboard and plastering hallway, three bedroom ceilings and smoothing a few walls. Install 4 new recessed lights in closets and new ceiling fixture. Window trim, kick plate and two floor registers in kitchen. Trim and baseboards in hallway.

Overall, the guys working for this small local contractor are fine. They care about the work and are pleasant to be around. That said, I don't appreciate having my project wait as long as it did. They would leave tools in my garage for weeks at a time, only to come and get them for another job before finishing mine. In the end, the stone work did not quite match the wood mantel and we discussed adding a piece of wood trim to fill the void. After waiting two weeks and paying the original estimate in full, Joey came back and finished it. My schedule is very flexible, allowing them access to the house during the day with sometimes little notice. The original trim profile agreed on could not be found, and I made it easy by agreeing to another piece of available trim. Without any up front discussion or approval, Tom sent me an invoice for the trim install later that same day. $260 above the original contract to install a $30 piece of trim that was needed to correct their own install gap. It's too bad when a small business is run this way. I will not hire them again.
Description of Work: Tom's company has grown since we hired him three years ago. This time around we had him tile the back splash in the kitchen and remodel a fireplace. The tile project started on time but the younger guy who was supposed to be leading the work quit the next day. The older, more experienced worker was solo for the next three days finishing the tile project alone. Several weeks pasted before the fireplace project started. Tom quoted me $2500 for a custom mantel that I sourced from MantlesDirect for $550 shipped. Once the mantel was delivered the work started which included a new stone veneer in front of existing brick with the mantel shelf on top. The project had several starts and stops. Other projects and scheduling conflicts put my work on hold for days and weeks.

This is unfortunate. After submitting the final invoice we received an email from the client describing his concerns and why there was the final charge. His "concerns" were all his frustrations with the job. We explained what the charge was and why. After that we didn't hear from him. We sent a couple of emails and texts. Nothing. We take our customer satisfaction very seriously and we tried to reach out to the customer to make things right. We weren't aware of the customer's issues with the job until the [Member Information Removed] and he hasn't responded back. Hopefully he will so we can make things right Regarding leaving tools at his house, we asked if that would be ok and he said that was fine. The "several weeks" the customer referred to between the tile backsplash and the fireplace work was 100% not our doing. This time was spent waiting on the mantle the customer ordered to come in and then having to put it on our schedule once it arrived. Whose responsibility that this job took extra time could be on both parties, but we were never given the opportunity to resolve the issue. The customer himself framed his fireplace and we came in to apply the cement board and install the tile and mantle that the customer purchased from mantles direct. The measurements were off. Subsequently, we found at the [Member Information Removed], we had to do some extra trim work. We couldn't find the trim profile that he liked in oak so we had to settle on another trim piece. But the [Member Information Removed] to determine exactly WHAT trim he liked took days to determine. We gave the customer options immediately after realizing it didn't come in oak. In the interim we had other jobs that required some of the tools we left at his property. In the [Member Information Removed], Thomas J Remodeling works every hour of every day making sure our customers are happy. Most jobs don't go exactly as planned because there are always unforeseen issues that arise during the course of a job; big or small. That's just a fact of this business. But we have many many customers who can attest to the level of customer satisfaction we provide. And you can even ask for those references.

Thomas J. Remodeling recently completed a total bathroom renovation for us. We initially received estimates from three different contractors and Thomas was in the middle. We went with them because we felt like Thomas was able to answer our questions and explain the details of the quote better than all of the others. He was also responsive and easy to work with which gave us a good feeling about choosing him for this work. This turned out to be a great decision because not only was he and his team easy to work with but we were extremely happy with the results. Once the work began, he and his crew did a really great job of protecting the house as much as possible which was really important to us. Our son has asthma and managing the dust and debris was critical. Thomas really made sure everything that could be done was done to minimize this. Communication was excellent. Thomas used a group text with my wife and I to make sure we could all keep each other up to date on various aspects of the project. We always knew who was coming when and when we needed to have materials on hand. This communication really helped move the project along and kept us in the loop. We hit a number of snags along the way as these type of remodeling projects often do. In each case, Thomas worked with us to resolve the issue and to come up with a plan that met our needs and minimized cost increases often juggling scheduling of his team or subs to best work with us and keep the project on track. We also cannot say enough about his crew. Thomas' crew were great to work with and they were always professional. They were great at answering questions and explaining what was going on. Each of his sub-contractors, such as the plumber and plasterer, were top notch as well and did a fantastic job. Most important of all, we are extremely happy with the final result. Our project involved a ton of wall tile and it looks fantastic. Thomas really went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the bathroom and we cannot thank them enough for the work they did. We would use Thomas J. Remodeling on any future project and we would happily recommend them to any prospective client.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom renovation. New tile floors, wall tile, bathtub and shower plus all related plumbing, painting and finish work. They also installed a new rail-mounted door (e.g. barn door style).

After getting a few quotes I decided to go with Tom for this job. He did have the best price, but my main reason for choosing him over the others was that he was much more responsive and very easy to deal with. He likes to communicate over email which make it easy to ask him questions as I thought of them. He sent me a quote within a couple of days after visiting my house for an estimate. He answered all of my questions about the job. He was able to start work about 3 weeks later. A few issues came up during the work but Tom and his project manager Joey were quick to address them. Overall I’m satisfied with the work they did and would recommend Tom to others.

Tom and his crew were really great to work with. They were problem solvers and communicated very clearly each step of this rather tricky re-model that had many pieces. I am truly happy with the results that came in at a fair price. Some stuff wasn't cheap but that's the deal. The bottom line is the relationship that is created. The trust. When you invite people into your home to be there and work you need to feel that they are taking care of your best interests. They did.
Description of Work: I was in a desperate need to re-do my bathroom within a very confined space. I have one hundred plus year old house and the last upgrade was in the 1950's. I had a couple of contractors that either didn't want the job or had completely different ideas than I had. I wanted to maintain a certain look that went with the house yet had an interesting design.

We never heard back from this company for an estimate. The company owner Thomas came down to our house to give us a quote. With all due respect, we were expecting a professional contractor who would guide us and ask questions. He seemed disconnected and not very knowledgeable. Based on the reviews I was expecting some quality expertise and also that the professional would take measurements. He did not take any measurements nor did he provide us a quote until now. What a waste of our time!

We try our best to meet the needs of our customers. When we realize the customer simply wants a remodel without a design or details in mind, it makes it virtually impossible to write a comprehensive estimate. We were waiting on a design concept from this customer and never received it. Maybe there was miscommunication about that and for that we apologize. We're sorry we were not able to meet your needs. We wish you the best of luck with the project(s).

Tom was able to fit our relatively small job into his schedule quickly. The work took several days. I was away from home part of that time; Tom kept in contact via email and IM, including photos so I could see what was going on. As often happens, the damage was more extensive than we originally thought, but Tom repaired everything and added extra support in the basement as "insurance."
Description of Work: Replaced rotten wood joist, siding and exterior trim and repaired deck rail. Painting and staining of repaired areas.
Thomas J Remodeling did a full remodel of our kitchen and living room in our 1910 house in Marlborough. Tom and his crew were very pleasant to work with. Tom was clear in his communication with us about the work being done, and demonstrated a very high degree of knowledge when dealing with structural issues uncovered during the job. His project manager and construction foreman Joey is smart and very talented. Their crew members were hard working and showed good to excellent construction skills. Joey was on the job full time, while Tom played a manager role, visiting regularly and handling construction issues. Different crew members came on and off our job as Tom kept things moving while also dealing with other customer projects. We used our own plumber. Electrical, flooring and plastering were handled by Tom's subcontractors, all of whom were uniformly excellent. One issue was in the quality or grade of the hardwood flooring used; it has many blemishes. I previously installed some oak flooring elsewhere in the house, and that material had many fewer knot holes, and where there were blemishes, I cut the offending board or did not use it. Our house was built in 1910, so it has some issues. Nothing is level, square or plumb. When old cabinets were removed (we donated them to Habitat for Humanity, keep that stuff out of the landfill!), we discovered the outside wall was rotten. Tom and Joey carefully looked over everything, and figured out a solution that would use as much of the existing structure as possible to keep the cost under control, while permanently correcting the issue and passing the building inspection. The kitchen floor has a slant of well over an inch from one end to the other. The floor drops 1-3/4" from the right side of the refrigerator to the left (in the photos you can see box structures supporting the cabinets around the fridge and the triangle trim piece they cut to match the ceiling). Joey and team installed our kitchen cabinets level within 1/8" over an 11 foot span per the countertop installer's laser measuring tool, and after the countertop was installed, they adjusted and corrected this 1/8" discrepancy. We are very pleased with our new kitchen and the work done by Tom's crew. The one shortcoming we noted was in painting. Tom has his carpenters do the painting. Painting is different than carpentry, requiring a different set of skills. At the end of the job, we were not satisfied with the painting work. The paint wasn't thoroughly stirred, so the color was inconsistent. The walls and ceilings did not get the full two coats, so when the light hit the walls, you could see the primer underneath. However, Tom and Joey responded to our complaints and brought the painting up to an acceptable level, though not as good as that delivered by a different, professional painting team which we used for other rooms in the house. Like every job of this magnitude, there were several issues that came up in the weeks following completion, some requiring fairly substantial rework. Tom scheduled a small crew to come in and fix all these items, and made everything as perfect as possible. Lastly, we had some sticker shock at the final invoice. The extra structural work drove up the estimated cost substantially. This could have been handled better with regular progress and budget reporting during the job. If we were able to see the effect of the overruns as they were occurring, we might have been able to adjust our requirements or reduce the work being done or at least be better prepared for the higher bill rather than having to digest it all at once at the end when it was too late to do anything. Overall, we are very pleased with our new kitchen and living room and are happy to recommend Thomas J Remodeling. (This would be a lot more readable if Angie's List respected paragraphs)
Description of Work: Kitchen and Living Room Remodel: custom cabinet installation; replaced and refinished hardwood floors; refaced gas fireplace; installed stone tiles in entryway; installed tile backsplash; lots of new wiring in kitchen; installed new woodwork: baseboards, window casings, door frames; repaired major structural problems. Paint.

Thomas and his crew did a beautiful job of converting our bathtub to a shower. Thomas was true to his word on the start date for the remodel and the completion date. He provided a detailed breakdown of the cost for each part of the work and kept perfectly to the estimate. I especially appreciated that his crew cleaned up after each day's work. They did a very nice job of tiling the shower walls; very neat and precise. Thomas made sure we were happy with the work and came back to adjust a minor problem with the bathroom door (not part of the original work agreement). I would most definitely recommend Thomas and his crew!! He is exceptional!!

Many thanks. If you need anything else, please let us know!
It was a very smooth process. Thomas responded to our email within an hour, and was over to check out the job within a couple days. He checked everything out and had a quote to us by the end of the same day. His crew had some openings so they started work three days after that and were done in a week. We were over to the condo to check out the progress almost every day. The crew left a very tidy workspace at the end of each workday which we appreciated. We are overall very happy with the work that was done. The drywall/plastering job is excellent - in the kitchen they did a really nice job of matching the new trowel finish to the existing one. We're really happy too with the new closet area in our living room - it looks great.
Description of Work: A pipe burst in the unit above our condo, flooding our kitchen ceiling. The water mitigation company left a huge hole in our kitchen ceiling, exposing a major issue with the way our dryer duct was vented out of the building. We also had a tiny half closet in our living room that we wanted to open up to make more usable, so we asked Thomas and his crew to re-frame this area and drywall it. They also painted everything once they were done.

The project in its entirety went very well. The plaster guys were great, smooth finishes and only minor splatter left to clean. They did plaster over a pot light in the process which I caught and it was fixed right away. The electrician was great as well and very flexible with a few added requests along the way. The carpenter did nice work however he did take a few liberties without consulting us, for example, staining the feature wall and ceiling beams without confirming stain colour, adding ornamental trim to the feature wall without consultation regarding design. The carpenter also spilled a lot of stain on our carpet, obviously assuming we were replacing it but we had never a discussion about that, if we weren't replacing it later on this could have been a problem. Apart from this, the carpenter kept the work area fairly organized and clean. Tom as the GC was very friendly and professional. He was very responsive to text and phone calls and checked project progress several times in person. There was a miscommunication regarding the cost of the carpentry project however Tom was very professional and addressed our concerns and worked with us graciously to agree on a fair compromise. Tom did explain to us that this was the result of him being out of town during a portion of the project and some changes to the original plan, and that he also learned from this for the future. Understandable and I applaud his ownership of this issue. I have a sense that Tom conducts business with integrity and focuses on quality and client happiness, I look forward to future projects together.
Description of Work: Demolition dining room and kitchen ceiling, wall in living room, kitchen back splash down to studs. Plastered foyer ceiling and a wall, kitchen and dining room ceiling and some wall patches, living room patches. Electrician removed two sets of track lights, wall sconce, ceiling fan and some extraneous plugs. Electrician installed three chandeliers and seven pot lights, fixed two plugs that weren't functional and a tripped breaker. Carpenter framed out and stained feature wall in living room and three beams in the ceiling. Also patched cedar ceiling exposed during demo.

We hired Thomas and his crew to install two exteriors doors and storms and repair an old Dutch door. Our home was built in the 1700s, and no job is straight forward or easy. Tom came up with a creative and attractive way of installing our front door despite its incredible crookedness. He and his team are both reliable and incredibly polite. They're also very agile - and were able to quickly handle unforeseen conditions while staying within estimate. Our neighbors have all commented on the quality of their work. We intend to use Tom and his team for all of our construction needs going forward.

Thomas was extremely responsive to my initial email (within a minute or two!). We set up an appointment to get an estimate. He was punctual and very pleasant to deal with. I then received a comprehensive written estimate and signed it and sent it back to schedule the work. Thomas was very accommodating in respect to my schedule and time frame. On the appointed day, both Thomas and Todd arrived and told me what would happen. Todd performed the work and was neat, polite and did a great job. I was very happy with the end result. As far as price goes, it was the only estimate I got, so I can't compare it to other contractors. It seemed reasonable to me, and if it was a little on the higher side, was worth the stress- free and well-executed work to me. I recommend this provider, and would use him again!

Tom was great to work with. Extremely responsive on email or text, so I never had to worry my questions wouldn't get answered. His crew were great as well. Always showed up when they said they would, and worked quickly with high quality. They left the house clean when they were done each day too. No coming home to an inch of dust all over the floors. We would have even finished early if we hadn't had to wait 3 weeks for a replacement counter top from Lowes! The results are beautiful and I will definitely call on him the next time I need some work done to the house.

We called the company a few days after the frame separated and spoke directly to Tom. He came over within a week and said he could have it done in a few hours. We scheduled for a couple of days later. Jeff did the work. He arrived on time and got right to work. He finished within a few hours (2 hours) and did an excellent job. A few times I had concerns about how things looked or whether they were being done correctly (or as we wanted them), and Tom was very responsive in addressing them and resolving things to our satisfaction (and Joey was also very helpful in passing along our concerns to Tom and addressing things with us on site as they came up). The room came out beautifully. We would definitely contact Tom again for future projects.

It was a real joy working with you. Thank you so much for everything!
Tom and his crew really came through for us! We had a number of walls removed, insulation and all, as a result of the ice dam damage in the wake of the harsh winter. Because so many homes were impacted, our insurance provider’s contractors were backlogged and unable to get to us. Most of the many vendors we contacted directly were also too busy and unable to take on our project. With early Fall arriving, we were facing a probability of cold weather setting in or significantly uninsulated home. Fortunately, Tom and his skilled, professional team came to our rescue. Not only did they get the job done well, they did it quickly, virtually eliminating any inconvenience to us. In addition to being fast, the professionals coming into our home were also prompt, cautious and very hard-working. We will absolutely work with Thomas J. Remodeling on future projects and will recommend them to friends and neighbors as well!

Tom and his crew were highly professional and expeditious. Tom always responded to all emails and addressed all our concerns In a timely manner - within minutes. They arrived on time - often early and were careful to clean up after themselves. They did a fabulous job and we are very happy with the results!! We have recommended him to several of our friends! Honest and trustworthy, appreciated these non tangible professional qualities as much as the finished product. Thanks Tom and crew!
