It went great. Give him a call and have him take a look at what you have. He gave me a ball park figure the first day he saw my house then had a firm estimate the next day. Cost overruns were $700.00 and change.
Description of Work: Ed and his crew were great. Very professional. Nice guy's. His team remodeled our bathroom. It was a down to the studs job with all systems completely replaced. His contract plumber and electrician were a reflection of his professionalism. All work was done on schedule and the final product was better than we imagined. I have hired Ed to come back and do another small job this summer and am making plans to hire him for a kitchen remodel in 2013. I give him my highest grade. You could do no better than him for a remodel.

We worked with him quite a bit in this house and we love working with him. He does a great job and is very careful with his work. He works very hard to listen to what we’ve asked for and come up with creative solutions. It was great overall and I’ve used him several times.
Description of Work: We used Eddie Mac’s Home Improvement to update our kitchen around April or May of this year. He installed cabinets, built an island and he installed the floor. He basically was the general contractor for all the work in the kitchen.

I can't comment on the work or price because we could never get him to come out for an estimate. He made two appointments to give us an estimate for a bathroom addition and never showed up. He also didn't call to let us know he wouldn't be coming, causing us to leave work early for no reason. When we finally got in touch with him after the second missed appointment he said he wouldn't give us an estimate because our house is on the market. The reason we want to renovate is to make our house more desirable to buyers, as it has been on the market for a year now. If he won't provide estimates for houses that are on the market, he should make this clear during an initial phone call. He obviously doesn't need new business so I would look elsewhere if you need work done.

We are posting on our revised web-site a fee for estimates on houses that are on the market. This will be fully refundable if the job actually starts. This year alone we have looked at 21 homes that are on the market and not one person has responded to our follow up. We always welcome new customers and go above and beyond when we take on the job. Read our reports. How can you say "look elsewhere if you need work done?" I understand your frustration trying to sell a house in today's market. Lower the price and move on. You'll make out on the other end when you purchase.

Excellent. Courteous, on time, clean, & reasonable. Actually came for an estimate at 7:30 in the evening 1 hour after I called him. The work done was very good. There was one small problem with one item & Ed returned immediately after my call & squared it away. We're very happy & would use again.
Description of Work: Ed did a list of about 8 jobs for us including caulking a tub, fixing a doorbell, putting washer & dryer up on pallets, fixing broken lamps, repairing a bad faucet, etc.

I didn’t get to do more than initial e-mails, but based on the Angie’s List information and my brief contact with him I felt he was fantastic. He would be my top choice though. He is professional and responsive. He was very helpful even though he was not able to provide me with a quote because was too busy. He leveled with me right upfront. He even gave me some suggestion which wasn’t going to make him any money. It was great. I was very pleased. I had a few e-mails back and forth. If I was able to wait for him until the fall I would have said its fine. In the conversation through e-mails with him he did indicate that he personally does all of the work. He does not send out crews who just do things under his name so one would really know that it’s being monitored. He was very clear in saying as much as he would want to help out, he was not going to over commit and then not be able to do what he promised to do for people. I thought that was marvelous. I think people are standing in line for the guy and if circumstance had permitted me to wait, I would have definitely been tempted to do so.

I get updates and saw that Eddie did not get a good report, so although the work was not just done, I thought I would submit a report. I use the reports quite a lot in choosing a provider, so I wanted to give a balanced perspective. Eddie showed up on time for his appointments. The first day after I had called. I needed some relatively minor repairs and Eddie came for the estimate and took tiime to explain. He knew what needed to be done and spotted something I hadn't noticed. He has the tools to do the job, including one that cost more than most tools that another provider who gave an estimate did not have. He charged a reasonable price and fashioned two parts of the job for me with that tool. He did not charge for the parts that he had on hand which for the most part were in his truck. Like any provider I would discuss what I wanted done and check in with him/his worker now and then to make sure it is what you want. I have had no problems with the work so far. I would definitely hire him again.

Thank you very much for the report! If you notice the bad reports, one thing they have in common is the fact that we never did do any work for the people that gave us the bad ratings! One report is under porches and decks. We never looked at any porch or deck!

Working with Ed was a pleasure. From the start, he worked with us to make our project affordable; he completed the parts of the job that were over our heads and gave us tips on how to do some of the tasks ourselves (e.g., painting) which kept our costs down. Ed was upfront and realistic about his start and completion dates and stuck to them. He was on time every day and went to great lengths to minimize the mess and damage that sometimes accompany a home improvement project. He put down paper to protect my hardwood floors and rugs and cleaned up after himself thoroughly at the end of each work day. I felt like my project was Ed's priority throughout the time he was here, even though it was a fairly small job. He was extremely prompt in his communications with me, and the fact that he uses email made it very easy to stay in touch with him. This was one of my favorite parts about the experience. Ed did very fine work in all areas, from drywall to laying tile to custom-made wooden moldings. He was a perfectionist and sanded and re-sanded the new ceilings and walls until they were flawless. He was also very helpful in suggesting design ideas. For example, when it turned out that no vanity lights would work with our medicine cabinet's dimensions, he came up with the solution of using recessed lights instead -- this looks great and is more practical, we couldn't be happier. We're very pleased with Ed's work and will certainly have him back. In addition to being a talented professional, he is also a genuinely nice guy. I have summers off in my line of work so I spent a lot of time with Ed and his team. They were a lot of fun to talk to and I feel like I learned a lot from them in the time they were here. I'm actually slightly disappointed that they are finished because I will miss having them around! If you need a good contractor in the North Shore area, call Ed. Now that I've said my piece, I can cancel my AL account because I won't be needing it to find another contractor, plumber, electrician, etc. any time soon. Thanks Ed!
Description of Work: Work performed on two bathrooms: 1) had a bath fan, ceiling, and claw-foot tub shower kit installed; 2) had a small 3/4 bath completely gutted and converted to a 1/2 (new drywall and ceiling, floor leveled, plumbing moved, electrical re-worked, new window, baseboard, and door frame moldings, fan, tile, recessed lights, vanity, mirror, toilet, and baseboard heater all installed).

Ed returned my initial phone call with lightning speed, followed up with email acknowledgement immediately, came out and provided a written estimate within 1 week, and performed the work within another week. He and a helper arrived on time, and finished within the time frame and price estimated. His workmanship was excellent and clean up was very good. Would absolutely consider him for similar and for larger more complicated work in the future.

We are confused as to how the price was a little too high? We quoted the price before any work was done as well as explained in detail the materials to be used and the customer agreed to the price. The unit she wanted didn't exist and it was custom built to her specifications. We also reviewed the drawings and gave a breakdown of the pricing. If you think something cost too much you should speak up. Not that we would have done it for less but we could have avoided the "B" rating. Remember when we asked you if there was any reason that you couldn't give us strait A's and you said you couldn't be happier with the experience?

I have had home repair persons in the past--most of them did excellent work. But I have never seen anyone like Ed MacFarlane. He shows attention to detail, and really cares about his work. Brian his associate, cares as much as Ed does. When we ran into a problem in one of my walls, Ed identified the problem and made sure is was fixed. At a couple of points when we needed an electrician and a sheet-rock guy, Ed brought in quality people. Everything he did for us, was done as if it was his own home. I remember the first day Ed came to work on my house--he actually showed up early. That was a first in my experience. And every day thereafter (for about 2 weeks) he showed up on time and worked hard. Things were finished as planned. Once when there was a delay, he let me know in advance and then followed through with his reschedule as promised. He was in regular communciation through email or phone on a daily basis, On top of everything, he was very personable and friendly--a gem of a person. My wife and I enjoyed having him in our home. Let me tell you a quick story. On one of the first days Ed worked on my house, we had a new refrigerator delivered. The delivery man was extaordinarily rude and simply left the refrigerator in my driveway. Ed and Brian took it upon themsleves to carry the refirigerator from the driveway, up the steps and into the kitchen--at no charge. He and Brian just did a good deed. Ed is the best contractor I have ever worked with. He gets an unqualified endoresment from me. If you are looking for an a superb contractor/handyman, then Ed is your man. He remodels kitchens, bathrooms, custom cabinetry, finish carpentry and tile. He can do just about anything and if he can't, he knows someone who can. You can contact Ed by phone or email: Eddie Mac's Home Improvement. 978 835 2231 or eddie@eddiemacs.com
Description of Work: We bought a new house and it needed some repairs. Ed MacFarlane came to our rescue. He built new shelves for my basement offfice, crown molding throughout the basement office and first floor, fixed the ill-fitting doors on the first floor, redid the trim around the doors and archways, built a shelf for the closet and improved the stairway to the basement office, and painted the first floor. There were many other little things he did just to make it right.

Eddie came out promptly and gave a written quote of $675 on 9/30. He scheduled the work for 10/2, and arrived with a helper Brian; the plumber wasn't available so Brian did the garbage disposal installation. During the light repairs I noticed that they had used a tan colored plastic backing for the lights and not the wooden blocks, painted the same color as the house, that were there before. Since I live in a condo, I told Eddie that this could be a problem with the association. He said the backing he used was better than the block and would prevent water from getting behind the light and the color difference was barely noticeable. It is noticeable if you look closely. Eddie needed to replace more clapboards than he estimated, so he went to pick some more up. Brian continued to work, but Eddie had taken the caulking gun, so Brian asked if I had one. I had just bought one to re-caulk the bathtub, and gave it to Brian. They mistakenly took my caulking gun when they left, and it took 2 emails and 2 weeks to get it back. The first time I used the loaded dishwasher after the garbage disposal replacement, it leaked badly; no water was getting out of the dishwasher. I emailed Eddie who responded that the there was a clogged drain hose, which Brian had tried to clear as much as possible, or a problem with the discharge pump. The dishwasher was the problem and they don't repair appliances. The dishwasher is old and and there may have been a clogged drain hose, but the dishwasher worked until the garbage disposal was replaced.

Everything was discussed and agreed upon before the work was started. There was a written and signed agreement. The dishwasher was working when we left the job and the member was the one than ran the dishwasher. The member even admits the dishwasher is old. Unfortunately some people think you can leave food on the plate and the dishwasher will act as a garbage disposal and we never said we repair appliances! I don't think it is fair to give us a rating of "D" when we went above and beyond. In regards to the light blocks, the customer said they where fine so we installed them. How can we have such a high rating with so many and a "D" with one? The caulking gun was returned but honestly, a "D" rating?

From start to finish very professional, helpful service. Provided accurate estimate and start dates. Made helpful suggestions to ensure the job would be done correctly. Excellent workmanship. The finished kitchen looks fanastic! We had decided to replace our countertop too given that we had to take the existing countertop off to remove cabinets. They did an excellent job shimming our base cabinets to ensure the new countertop would fit properly with our tile back splash. We also replaced all of our appliances and contractor returned to ensure appliances would push back properly for installation. We encountered a problem with our new fridge. We had purchased a larger model and thought we had measured properly for the fridge to fit in the existing opening. Much to our dismay we could not push the fridge back. Contractor took extra time to work with us to adjust cabinets around fridge to allow the new fridge to push back properly. This was not a planned task, and it required taking out table saws, etc. to get the job done. They worked quickly and had the extra job done in less than an hour. We were very thankful! Excellent, prompt communication from start to finish. Answered calls promptly and provided professional guidance. Arranged for Plumber Peter Norman (who also did an excellent job) to be on-site to complete the disconnect and connections; again following a very tight time schedule. We would not hesitate to use Eddie Mac's again for any home improvement project. We give them two huge thumbs up!
Description of Work: A recent kitchen flood resulted in needing to remove and replace kitchen base cabinets. The job required removing the base cabinets, countertop, removing drywall and insulation, replacing drywall, insulation, plastering and painting, detaching plumbing, installing new cabinets and connecting plumbing. Shimmed base cupboards for installation of new counterop. We were on a tight time schedule due to schedules with other contrators to complete flood repairs (i.e. hardwood floor replacements)

Ed came over to give me an estimate on the painting and immediately noticed there was a gap between the crown molding and the ceiling, which he mentioned he could easily fill in. He measured everything, and a couple days later emailed me estimates for the labor and the amount of paint I would need for each room. He then had his primary painter, John, come to the house to look at a wall that they thought would be a problem. John determined that I should get an oil-based paint for that room, and also suggested the type and brand of paint I should get for the other rooms. John had to do a ton of prep work to smooth out these lumpy, cracked walls that had been behind wallpaper for decades. He s a real perfectionist and I definitely benefited from that. The walls look beautiful! Both Ed and John mentioned that John had to do a lot more work on the walls than they had originally thought, he honored the estimate. When Ed told me he could fill in the gap between the crown molding and the ceiling, I thought he meant he d just add a thin strip of wood in the gap, but he added this whole extra piece of molding that made the room look like a million bucks. I had also mentioned to Ed that I had to get back to the person who had refinished my floors a couple weeks earlier and have him install a new threshold. Ed told me to pick one up at a home improvement store or wherever and he d install it for free. Well, I forgot all about doing that, but Ed later emailed me and told me that he had gone to two different home improvement stores to look for a threshold, couldn't t find what he wanted, was making me one from scratch. I am just so happy with Ed s professionalism, level of service, and honesty, and he ll be the first person I call for future projects.
Description of Work: Prepared and painted the walls, ceiling, doors and trim in 2 bedrooms, the living room/dining room, and a small hallway. Enhanced the crown molding in 2 rooms. Custom made, polyurethane, and installed a threshold.
