gutter repair, siding, house painters

Workers showed up as scheduled and did a thorough job of scraping and sanding. They covered adjacent hedges and caught all scrapings for disposal, leaving the job site clean after each work day. They thoroughly primed and caulked before painting, and painted neatly. Rotted or otherwise deteriorated shingles and wooden gutter were replaced neatly after we were presented with a separate work estimate for this portion of the work and had approved it before the priming phase had begun. One whole side of the garage's wooden gutter was rotten. However, it was of a gutter size that was non-standard, and we were told that it would have to be special-ordered at a significantly high price. We were given several options and elected to replace the the gutter on all four sides (none of which was in great shape) with a standard size. We were given a separate estimate for this work and approved it. This work was also completed neatly. The final cost for the painting and carpentry work on the house came in at or slightly below estimate. The gutter replacement on the garage, however came in at $450 above the estimate, due to an inaccurate estimate of the material cost (the Socelvic office volunteered a copy of the supplier's invoice when questioned about this). The company repaired a length of PVC pipe from our sump pump that was damaged in the course of the work, at no additional cost. The project took more than a month overall, mostly because of bad weather, but also because the crew was (apparently) diverted to other projects for several days. Crews varied from 2 to 7 people depending on the work for a particular day. The owner, the office manager, the supervisors, and the crews were all pleasant to work with and provided information on a timely basis when requested. The crew members worked diligently for long days and left the site neat at the end of each workday. They also disposed of all waste products of the work. Socelvic company's labor prices felt high, but we did not have a good basis for comparison, since the only other company we brought in for an estimate never gave us one. However, as noted above, the quality of their work was very good throughout. Their payment schedule for the painting work was heavily front-weighted compared with other contractors we have used, requiring a $1,000 deposit, 40% of the total on the starting day, 40% when priming started, and the balance at the end. We've been more accustomed to 1/3 at the start, 1/3 half-way through, and 1/3 upon satisfactory completion. The two carpentry jobs (the general work and the garage gutter replacement) were billed separately with payment due on completion. Overall we are very satisfied with the final result, and our house and garage look much better!
Description of Work: Scraped (loose paint only--not complete strip), sanded, and painted house and garage. Replaced deteriorated shingles and a section of wooden gutter. Removed wooden bracket from garage. Completely replaced deteriorated wooden gutters around garage. Extended and redirected one downspout as requested.

It took 2 or 3 phone calls to get him out here. He was a couple of hours early for the quote. He was supposed to be here at noon and he was here at 9:30, which was a little unfortunate because I had somebody else coming at 10 that morning. That was kind of hard but it ended up being okay because he wasn't here long. He was here on the day he was supposed to be. His bid came in low. We didn't want any spray-painting or a lot of the power washing because our house is very close to another one. We explained that to him and he said that was all he did. He kind of blew us off on that part of the customer service. We chose not to go with him. He wasn't willing to bend so we ended up spending $600 more to get what we wanted exactly. He was very nice about it and said that was the kind of equipment he had. We felt like we wanted it hand done because of the closeness to our neighbors. I think he was experienced but I didn't get the best vibe from him. He definitely had the best price but he didn't listen to what we had to say.
Description of Work: We got an estimate from Socelvic Company for exterior painting of a single-family home, including wood shutters and trim. It was a single story cape using 3 colors. It included scraping and prep work. It basically was a complete job, which also included iron railings and painting of a small back porch.

This customer had 5 visits in the winter of 2009-2010 on 12/21/2009,01/04/2010,01/18/2010,2/12/2010 and 2/17/10. Normaly customers have around 20 visits during the winter season. He called and cancelled most of the visits. Customer were supposed to provide ice melt for us to use as is stated on his contract with us. Think, It's hard to believe that we would spend our salt while we didn't have to.

The contractor performed an excellent job, from initial estimate through to full completion. They were open and honest about the estimate and the work that was needed and took great care once they were on site to do the work. They powerwashed and stained the deck in only a few days, and came back to assess the final results. The project leader, Alex, was very professional and polite the whole way through. And, there were no surprises with the estimate at all. If I choose to expand the deck in the future, I would definitely have the company bid on the job (and would be inclined to hire them).

We were very happy with the work. The room looks great. We felt that the price may have been a little high given that it was for one room, but they were there and the walls were not in great shape to start with. I agreed with their assessment that the additional work should be done. It was worth it overall to have it done right & in one day.
Description of Work: We hired them through the Angie's Big Deal which had certain limitations on the work (2 coats paint no trim, etc.) We decided to have them do additional work for an additional amount of money. They skim coated our bedroom walls and ceiling, primed and painted two coats of paint on the walls plus the trim and doors. They did all of this in one day. They were punctual and worked hard all day. They cleaned up after themselves and moved the furniture back when they were done.

the drop ceiling in a rental unit fell the night before and the tenant had to be put in up in a hotel -- they were the only contractors that said they could have the job done in one day -- they took 2days to complete the job -- which was fine -- but after the job I question the gaps between the ceiling and the wall because it just did not look finish but Celio (son) said that it was because the building was old and the walls were uneven but it still would pass inspection -- well the inspector came a week later and it did not pass -- so I called them back and they filled the gaps -- and this time it did pass inspection -- Word of advise -- next time you do a job -- complete the job -- so it looks finish then you will not have to be called back --
Description of Work: they put in a permenent ceiling in the kitchen - had a drop ceiling in a rental unit that fell in -- needed someone to fix that ASAP -- the only contractor that said they could get the job done that day ---

Excellent. I signed up for the Big Deal to have three rooms painted. The ceilings also need painting so they painted them for an additional charge. They were professional, efficient and the three rooms look wonderful. The company doesn't usual service Franklin; however, they made an exception because of the Angie's deal. I would strongly recommend this company to anyone with no hesitation. Thanks for a very pleasant experience.

Interviewed 3 contractors and these guys were in the middle of the bids. They won the service due to they could start in a week. I presented them with the existing porch and asked for a replacement as is. Their contract was very detailed but omitted simple items like painting but I had to point those things out to make their bid comparable to others who gave simple "all in" prices. It seemed Socelvic was giving a la carte pricing which frustrated the process. There were early delays with permits but once they started they moved very quickly (80% complete in 4 weeks) and the workmanship quality was good. Once we hit 80% the contractor noted we should probably replace the front siding since the new porch wouldn't fit exactly and the existing siding wasn't available anymore. So that stopped the project for a month till we agreed to additional work and the materials were delivered. Then the siding took another 3 weeks to be installed due to our project dragged into the contractor?s schedule for other projects. Unfortunately this is where things went bad for awhile since the contractor kept breaking promises to show up and the finishing was delayed. Then the contractor brought up items that weren't in the contract which I figured should be in the contract such as waterseal on the deck and painting the ceilings for an additional $1800. I understand I signed a contract but it was so detailed that as a homeowner I can't possibly remember every single component, nail, screw, and board that is needed to build a porch. I redlined the bid 3 times and still didn?t catch everything. As a professional contractor I would imagine that they would be smart enough to bring up holes in the project, especially since I showed them my old porch and told them to "replace" it. In addition even though the contract noted the site would be cleaned up daily they left pile of the old siding on the front lawn for 2 weeks even though they said it would be there only a few days. Overall the porch looks beautiful but I was disappointed with the delays and omissions in the bidding.

It took awhile for them to get back to me. I called them right after the deal closed and it took them a couple of weeks to call me back. We then had to talk back and forth to get the appointment scheduled. There were a lot of forgotten calls. I have strict rules because I live in a co-op on this caused a hassle. I needed a certificate of insurance and they gave me the run around on this. They also had to come during certain hours during the week which was tricky. They did a pretty good job with the painting but I'm not positive I would hire them again. The person who was overseeing the job spoke English but I couldn't communicate with the workers. I also had to touch up a few of the spots and they left a roller inside one of the paint cans.

Fantastic. They exceeded greatly our expectations. The men were polite, incredibly hard workers (despite the overwhelming heat), and did a superb job. The house was in lousy shape -- we did not have any illusions that a paint job could transform it, but we were wrong; they managed to make a house that had a somewhat "distressed" appearance actually sparkle. Despite have lived in our house for over 30 years, and having had it painted many times, I had no idea how beautiful it was.
Description of Work: They scraped/hand sanded, primed, caulked, and painted (two coats) the exterior of our 1905 wood clapboard home. They also painted the metal fire escape, the standing seam garage roof, and applied Australian timber oil to the mahogany porch and rails.

I received a prompt estimate in mid-March to prep, sand, prime & paint my colonial, 3 bedroom home. Alex Vicente came out to give me estimate. He was very pleasant and accommodating, explained what they would do. He had asked if I wanted my very small deck power washed and water proofed since they would be power washing the house anyway. I said no, don?t bother. When the estimate came I was somewhat surprised that it was part of the job anyway. It also included waterproofing the deck (which I don?t believe was actually done). Overall the price was very reasonable. About what I had expected. He gave me the Angie?s List discount even though I was not an Angie?s List subscriber at the time but had called them because I had checked them out when I was a member before. I sent in my deposit and their office immediately called me to schedule since they just had a cancellation (This was early April). I told her I wanted to wait till the end of May or early June since I felt the weather was still not quite warm enough. She tried to persuade me to do it earlier because everyone else wanted to do it later as well and that would cause scheduling difficulties. We left it that she would call me May 17 to see if I was ready for the 24th. Initially she suggested the 17th and I tried to push it to the 24th. Finally I said ok for the 17th. I thought they were going to start the 17th but when I called her she said no, not till the 24th. Slight miscommunication but not a big deal. I preferred the later date anyway. We had a few days of warm weather but intermixed with freezing temperatures so I was glad I waited. The morning they were to start, Alex came with two painters. They were a little later than when they said they would come but set right out to work. First they sanded and scraped the house. Two sides were in bad shape with peeling paint. They had to sand that whole side because the peeling was so bad. They finished sanding and then power washed the whole house and deck. These guys worked straight through from 7:30-8:30 to 4:30 stopping only for a half hour lunch break for the next few days. It rained one night and they didn?t continue the painting till later that afternoon, to give the shingles on the house time to dry. They worked as a team going around the whole house systematically to get the job done. The work was completed in a timely fashion and they cleaned up fairly well considering there were many paint chips and very, very minimal if any paint splatters. There was some minor rot in various places, the worst being the front fascia boards where the gutters were. They did the repair work, which I thought was rather expensive given the amount of work and time it took to do it. They put the gutters back on. However, I did have to call them back because I had problems with the gutters after that. One of the gutter spouts, which they had removed and put back, was gushing water out near the elbow, which it didn?t do before they started. The other area they repaired but now seemed to be leaking worse than before. I called Alex and mentioned this to him. He came back to take a look. He said leaves might be clogging the spout. Given that they had to remove these in order to paint, I would have expected them to remove any debris that was in them before putting them back. Evidently not. He was to have his guys come back to caulk it and have the carpenter refasten the other gutter that was leaking that Saturday. As far as I can tell they haven?t come back because after the next rain storm, water was still spewing out near the elbow so I had someone take the gutter spout off to see if there was debris obstructing it. There was, so he cleaned it out. The other area where they were to refasten the gutter still appears to be leaking. Other than that it was a pretty good experience.

Angies List advertised a Big Deal that would save members about 60% off interior painting with Solcelvic Company if 25 people or more signed up. Upon signing up for the deal you must provide your credit card information that will only be charged when/if the minimum number of people sign up to activate the deal. I signed up and on July 2nd I was notified that the deal was activated and my credit card was charged $565.00. In the notification from Ange's List, customers were instructed to contact Solcelvic Company to schedule the service. I called the company on the day the deal was activated and left a detailed message. When I received no response after 72 hours, I called and left another message. Over the last 17 days I have called Solcelvic Company numerous times and never reached an actual person and not one of my messages were ever returned. I assumed that after at least 25 people signed up for the deal, the company would be busy and may not be able to provide service immediately but their unresponsiveness to a customer who already paid for their services was unacceptable and gave me little reassurance about the quality of work they would provide. I called Angie's List and requested a refund of my money.

Member, we're not sure what happened but, we never received any of the messages that you say you left us. First of all, why we would not respond to you when it's in our best interest in doing as many projects possible; specially, because these are PAID projects already. Second of all, 16 people already called and booked their work. Third, Angies List never called us regarding this issue and we were aware of the situation only after reading your report. We also could've being contacted by e-mail too. We belive the whole situation is unfortunate for both sides. Really, we don't think that is no one to blame here. We're here and open to discuss the matter as you wish. We appreciate your business. Sincerely, Socelvic Company

The work was high quality and executed professionally. They worked continuously until everything was finished. The tenants who live there commented on how courteous the workers were and that there was no yelling, swearing or loud radios. Celio did a walk-though of the work with me and made sure I was happy with everything before asking for the final payment. I called a few months after the project was finished as I noticed a couple downspouts which had not been put back and they promptly sent someone by to put them up with no hassle.

Socelvic did a great job. As with all large projects there were a few miscommunications and mix-ups during the process, but each time I spoke with Celio and he made sure everything was corrected immediately. I had them do painting (this review) and carpentry (another review) and by the end, I was convinced that Socelvic does high quality work. Celio is easy to talk to and it is easy to see that he genuinely cares about each project and his reputation.

Started project late September. By the time all permits were obtained it was middle October. they really did not start working until November. and because of weather and one thing or another the project went on until April. I don't know who's responsability it was for scheduling but the 1st crew would show for for a few hours and you would not see them the rest of the week. The weather did not co-operate with us at all. I had some quality issues and they responded posittively. They replaced the crew and they got the work finished. This was my first experience working with a contractor so I have nothing to compare it to. When I had an issue they resolved it immediatly so no complaints at all there.

Excellent from start to finish! We received the written estimate within a few hours of Celio's visit. The pricing was great and was nearly 50% less than other quotes we had received. They were able to start work the next day. They were on time, professional, cleaned up extremely well, and did a great job. When things took a little longer than expected they came back on Saturday to finish up. The doors look amazing and I would highly recomend them to anyone and will definitely use them again!

The workers are now gone and the dust has settled. Here is the feedback on what was done. I was very pleased with the quality of the work, politeness of the workers, and the predictability of what they promised and what they delivered. You will find the contact information listed below for the Socelvic Company, if you wish to get a bid from them for your unit. I went with them because they are highly rated on Angie's List. Most of the issues with my unit stem from incredibly poor workmanship by the contractor who originally built this collection of units. My deck was completely rotted down through the upper ceiling section of the second floor bedroom. It was almost a structural issue, though as it turned out the support I-beam where the deck floor meets the back wall of my unit was not damaged enough to require replacement. I had the ceiling support structure under the deck rebuilt, a new deck floor with appropriate pitch installed, the door leading to the deck raised about 2 inches to clear the new pitch in the floor, new plywood/vapor barrier/red cedar shake shingles installed where damaged around the deck, as well as between the deck and the back second floor windows, new railing system, new trim, and new window casing on second floor bedroom. I also had him install a new gutter system along the leading edge of the deck that is now connected with my down spout. It is not aesthetically pleasing but it is functional and it is what I requested. Here is a rounded break down of charges - - labor - $7,400 ($55/hr/person); materials - $2,800; disposal fee of old materials for this project and the other extensive work done around the unit was a flat fee of $350. The final bill came with photocopies of all materials purchased for my project. However, when we reconciled the final bill, Celio decided not to charge me for any of the rubber membrane (two layers, one on the second floor ceiling and the second on the raised pitch floor under the decking), plywood, or any nails associated with my project. I also had them replace much of the soffit and fascia, entire front entrance cedar shake roof down to the plywood, decorative wooden fence near the sidewalk, scrape/prime/paint/replace where needed rotted cedar shake shingles of my three story house, and replace many of the window casings on my unit for another $10,000. I will be using this company again in the future.
