I found the estimate to be very reasonable, Steve to be very professional and helpful. We have not yet completed all of the work but will definitely consider them when we do. Happy to recommend them.
Description of Work: They did wallpapering in one room, but gave me an estimate for much more.
This was a challenging job for Quality Preferred Painting (Steve Austin and team), for a number of reasons. First, there was a good deal of carpentry that had just finished up, so there were a lot of different surface textures to deal with?new plaster, new drywall, and old surfaces that already had several coats of paint on them. Next, the ?joints? in the apartment (where walls meet floors, painted surfaces meet stained woodwork, etc.) were far from perfect. There were also a variety of ceiling features (speaker grilles, recessed light trims), as well as 20+ year old aluminum window frames with chips and dings. All this was on top of the fact that this is a small apartment with limited working space, in a building with tight hallways and a small elevator (and all this in a neighborhood where parking is always difficult). Steve came out to estimate the job ? he was right on time (he knows the neighborhood well), and took the time to fully spec everything out. Within minutes, I knew that Steve and Quality Preferred were different than the other painters I had invited to give estimates. He didn?t just ?glance? at the apartment, like others did. He looked over every wall and ceiling surface, and examined the windows closely. Nothing seemed to faze him, and I got the feeling that he had ?been there? and ?done that?. He had suggestions about how to tackle the variations in texture (pole sanding in some areas, and using high nap rollers in others), and recommended the best way to approach each of the ceiling items. He also knew exactly what type of paint to use on the walls, ceilings, and windows. By the time Steve left, I felt very comfortable that he and his crew would be up to the job. The estimate was fair. It wasn?t the cheapest we got, but I felt that other painters didn?t really comprehend the complexities of the job. So, although it was a stretch for us, I felt that we would get our best value for money with Quality Preferred. The job took about a week ? which was exactly what Steve estimated. We were not living there during the work, but I did a walkthrough most nights. The apartment was clean, and the workers? tools were left very tidy ? ready for the next day?s work. If we had been living there, I?m sure Steve and his team would have been very respectful guests. Steve is a great communicator ? quickly reachable via phone or email. There were a couple of very minor concerns I brought to Steve?s attention during the job (mainly because I wasn?t sure if certain sections were done yet--- they weren?t!), and Steve responded promptly and politely. Like magic, the concerns disappeared as the job progressed. The finished job was incredible. Steve?s brother beautifully taped all the transition lines (e.g. where the walls meet the hardwood floor in the living room), and the lines were straight and clean. The texture of the surfaces across the entire unit was ?normalized?, and you really can?t tell (without looking closely) which areas had been previously painted, and which were new plaster. The speaker grilles on the ceilings were beautifully painted, as were the recessed light flanges. Last but not least, the windows turned out very well?better than I expected. I?d say Quality Preferred saved us thousands of dollars by giving the windows a new lease on life. (The windows were a particular challenge, and I?m pretty sure any of the other painting crews I interviewed would have come back to me with change orders ? or at least would have done a less careful job.) I?ll admit that I am a very particular customer with a keen eye for imperfections, and Quality Preferred?s work exceeded my exacting standards. Every detail was attended to. Overall, this was a very positive experience?probably the best I?ve had with any crew who?s done work in my home. The results get compliments from everybody who visits. I?ve recommended Quality Preferred multiple times so far, and I intend to do so well into the future. In a few years, when we?re ready to repaint, I know I?ll only have one call to make.

I recently purchased this condo and was anxious to have some ceiling repairs and painting done before I moved in. I called Steve on Tuesday to ask for an estimate and he was able to come out the next day to see the unit and discuss what I wanted done. Steve came back with a complete estimate on Thursday morning and advised that he would likely be able to start as early as the following Monday (he was currently working on an exterior painting job and the rain in the forecast was going to free him up for a few days). When I compared the other estimates I received, Steve's was a bit better than the others and his quick availability meant I could have everything done before I moved. As it was now Friday morning, Steve and I agreed that I would purchase the paint myself so it would all be available first thing Monday. He told me everything I needed to purchase including paint brand, finish and quantity - all I needed to do was settle on the colors. He arranged for me to purchase the paint from his usual supplier in order to leverage his discount and ensure that I wouldn't pay more by purchasing the paint myself. Steve and his team showed up right on time on Monday morning and they immediately got to work covering the floors and prepping the walls, etc. Steve told me he expected the project to take 3 or 4 days and would call me when they were all done. Steve did ask for a deposit of approximately 40% of the total labor cost. While I don't object to a good faith deposit as I understand the risk of not being paid, I do think that 40% is a bit high in normal circumstances. All in all, the repairs and painting look great and I'm very happy with the work done. I will definitely contact them again in future if needed and would recommend them to family and friends.
Description of Work: - Repaired 12 ft crack in ceiling (textured plaster skimcoat). - Repaired various small holes in drywall (from wall hangings, window treatment hardware, etc). - Painted ceiling, walls and trim in living room, dining room, kitchen, foyer, master bedroom, guest bedroom, and two bathrooms as well as walls of 4 closets (approximately 1200sf total).

This is the second time I've used Steve and his crew. The first was on a kitchen remodel we did last year; this time was a basement renovation. The crew was different than last time, but the experience was the same -- great. Steve came over and took a long time to talk with us about what we wanted to do, and gave advice on staining and paint types. He was extremely thorough in evaluating the job, unlike some other painters who come in and just glance quickly around the space. His crew showed up *exactly* at 7:30 every morning and waited patiently in their cars for us to come let them in, so that they wouldn't wake up our infant son. They were extremely professional and took great pains to prep the space so that they didn't damage the new floors. Every night when they left the space was clean of clutter. The job took around 7 days a week with 3 guys working all day on site. They did a beautiful job and the space looks truly amazing now. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Prepping and painting of new construction (basement renovation): Prepping and painting (1 coat primer, 2 coats finish) of around 800 sq ft of wall and ceiling Prepping and painting of trim (1 coat primer, 3 coats finish) on 3 windows, plus baseboard trim and 2 doors. Stripping and re-bonding of an exposed concrete wall, painting it to match walls Polyurethaning of new oak staircase treads and handrail (staircase risers were painted trim color) Painting of exposed brick fireplace (1 coat primer, 2 coats finish) Cost includes $575 in materials/paint

Quality Preferred Painting & Wallpapering (through owner Steve) was very responsive, professional and courteous. We requested a quote by phone, they provided that but also came by to assess the work, and were able to start immediately after (which they did and finished exactly when promised.) The job involved very intricate grass cloth wallpaper with difficult seams that are now barely visible after installation. They provided consultation and advice with the purchase of the wallpaper before and during installation. We had put our house on the market in the Fall for 60 days without an offer, despite strong traffic. We decided to wallpaper the living room and paint the trim a week before putting it back. Quality Preferred was able to make this possible with their very fast-turnaround and reasonable rates. As a result, we received a full-price offer within a week and *everyone* raved at how great the living room looks. We will definitely be calling Quality Preferred Painting & Wallpapering to help us with our new home.

Requested $200 deposit for work which I thought high for webbing and paint. Then another $700 when work completed. The work was more extensive than aniticipated. He also matched existing color to what was on wall to complete the repair. Although I thought the cost a little high, the work and their professionalism exceded my expectations. They arrived on time, worked effieciently and worked fairly clean which was important to me as it was just before Christmas. Would definitely hire them again.

Steve and his crew were great, as was the price. They were there at 7:30 am promptly every morning, were pleasant to talk to, paid attention to detail, and cleaned up every day. The quality of the work was excellent. I was especially worried that they would get paint on the newly-installed wood cabinetry trim, but their lines were perfect. Our kitchen contractor was also impressed with their work. Steve was also very good about communicating over email. He frequently sent me information about what was remaining to be done the next day, or if there were going to be delays due to rain. The work and the price were great, as was the team. I'd definitely use them again and recommend them to others!
Description of Work: Interior: Primed and painted (2 coats) walls and trim in a newly renovated kitchen and pantry, plus living room ceiling, plus bathroom ceiling and trim, plus a closet. Exterior: filled, prepped, primed and painted aluminum window frames from which old aluminum awnings had recently been removed (after removal the frames had many holes and stains, hence why we needed them painted). Also re-glazed and painted 4 old double-hung windows.

They were wonderful. We used them because the owner is the husband of my friend. They were very polite, professional, and punctual and the work they did was of a very high quality. It was obvious that everyone really knew what they were talking about while they were doing the work. They understood painting, what to do, and how to handle different situations. They were very helpful to us and we didn?t have any negative feelings about them. We thought the price was fair and reasonable. It was a good value because we got quality work at a reasonable price. You can?t see any seams in the wallpapering. They got it done in the time they said they would, we could reach them by phone when we needed them, and they arrived when they said they would arrive. We would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Quality Preferred Painting painted almost every room in our house and the ceilings too. They also did some drywalling and wallpapering as well.

Awesome! Steve called me back right away and I was able to give him the details of the job. He quoted me out a per painter, per day price. I did three other quotes and they all were about the same. In the end, it came down to timing. Steve called me on a Wednesday and I was able to get them there the following Monday (I could have done Friday). Anthony and Shawn arrived 15 minutes early (equated potential traffic into the equation), explained everything they would do in detail and then executed the job with ease. The job took two days. They cleaned up each day upon completion. I was extremely impressed with the skill level of their painting techniques. They were very polite and courteous. If I had any questions, they answered. I learned a thing or two as well! In the end, I was extremely satisfied.
Description of Work: Being a lazy homeowner, I needed an entryway, stairway and upstairs hallway painted. Anthony and Shawn (father and son team) came in, prepped the walls, patched all the holes, cracks and blemishes and painted. They painted two coats on everything with time to spare so they even painted seven doors!

We called Steve about a week before we wanted the work to be done. He was just finishing up another "outside" job and since the weather wasn't conducive to him working on that job, he was able to start our indoor project almost immediately! He arrived on time and was done in the few days he initially told us it would take to complete the job.
Description of Work: Steve painted our newly plastered family room, including the trim and walls, and also painted the renovated half bath in the same area (again, including the trim work). He arrived on the first day with a co-worker and primed and completed the first coat, then came back on Monday by himself to finish the job. He was polite, punctual, and considerate. We have a 13 month old baby who he took into consideration while doing the job (making sure things were cleaned up and no messes were left for her to find).

He gave us a good price, was here on time and did a great job. They were here all day doing the work, in the cold and never complained once or asked for anything. I would recommend them.
Description of Work: Steve replaced the gutters for me.
Steve Austin had a good crew, the guys were very nice. I thought they were very fair and honest. You run into a lot of dishonest contractors. Anything I wanted done, they agreed to right away. They were very thorough. They had to redo some things, but they were good about that. When they had to come back, there was no additional charge. They really went over and above, and without giving me any hassle. They told me right up front what the price would be, which I thought was good. The work ended up going over the initial cost, but I agreed to that. They were right in line with other 2-3 bids I received for this work. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We inherited the family house and needed to get it ready for sale. We needed to have wallpaper stripped out of every room and repainted. We had to have the bond board repainted in the basement as well as an office. They installed a vanity and a toilet in one of the bathrooms. They installed all new hollow panel doors in the bedrooms throughout the house as well as solid panel doors in the halls. I had all the hardwood floors refinished in the bedrooms. They refinished the parkay floor in the family/dining room also. They did some carpentry outside, renailing and added new shingles as well as repaint them. Some of the nails were pushing up on the roof and they renailed those. They cleaned out the gutters. They repaired some of the screens and the screened door of the deck. And they restained the overhead rafters in the screened room.
Steve Austin is very helpful and is willing to spend time going through the house to determine what needs to be done and what doesn't. The work quality is top notch and Steve checks in on his workers and the work being done frequently. The work was completed in a timely manner. He hires talented and responsible workers who clean up after themselves and show up on time. A very professional outfit.
Description of Work: Strip wallpaper in the following areas: Center Hall, Half Bath, Master Bath, Master Hall,Conservatory, Full Bath, Upstairs Hall, Back Stairwell. Prepare and do minor patch work to walls. Does not include extensive patch work if necessary. Apply Shields Sizing and install owner supplied wallpaper in three Bathrooms. Apply one coat B/M Super Spec Primer and one coat of B/M Superspec Eggshell to remainder of walls that are to be stripped. Touch sand, as needed between coats. All walls to be one off white color. Additional coat, if needed will be additional cost. Install strapping on entire garage ceiling(not including room off garage). Install 1/2" blueboard and skimcoat plaster to entire ceiling and exposed walls in main garage. Includes wrapping main support beam. Garage must be completely emptied for this work. Heat detectors must be dropped and miscellaneous electric work must be done previous to this work. Blueboard to go up to pipes for sink, as discussed. Insulate exposed ceiling and walls in main garage. R-13 in walls, R-19 in ceilings. Prime and apply one coat of flat finish to entire main garage ceiling and walls, including existing finished wall. Time is of the essence for the painting and wallpapering portion of job. This portion to be done between July 2nd-July 11th, 2008. Appropriate clean up at the end of each day will be done. Touch up paint will be marked and left on job at completion.

Steve returned my call immediately and was very pleasant. We scheduled an appointment for the next morning to walk through the house so he could prepare a quote. He arrived on time for our meeting. He introduced himself and gave me some background on his company. He has a few crews that have worked for him for years. All professional painters. During the walk through he asked many good questions and I was confident that he really understood the scope of the work and my expectations. He also had many good suggestions along the way. He really knows his stuff.
Description of Work: Requested a quote for painting the interior of a large house (14 rooms). Including walls, trim, ceiling, new windows. The painting was somewhat challenging as the original colors are very, very dark. The ceilings were new and required detailed prep before painting.
