As always, Papalia's service is prompt, professional, and reasonably priced. Whether it's annual maintenance or an issue that has arisen, they never fail to provide high quality, responsive service and never try to "up-sell" products or services. We have used Papalia exclusively for all our plumbing and heating needs for over 7 years.

They are VERY expensive! They charge $50 just to come from Acton to Concord to give an estimate. We supplied the new faucet, so all he had to do was install it. He also found & replaced a cracked plastic connector to the disposal drain, and replaced the two shutoff valves which he said were corroded and in danger of leaking. We ended up paying about $600 for a 90-minute visit. Next time we'll shop around.

This is a very lousy company with incompetent staff. Their charges are unfair and they have no clue what they are doing.
Description of Work: We bought a house in Belmont in September and we had some problems heating the house. We called this company that I found on Angie's list. They came and changed the whole electrical panel charged us 1500$ and then said that was not the issue. Then, they change two pumps charged us 1700$ each. The problem persisted. I was getting annoyed that I paid close to 5 grants and still the house was cold. I called them back and they told me that they have to change the whole burner. At this point, I called another company to get a quote. And the second company found out that one of the fireplaces in living room was open. They closed the door and the problem got fixed. They are very incompetent. I am a physician with a very busy schedule and I was not at home for any of their work and I talked to them on the phone, trust them. Will never call them for the smallest problem.

Response from Papalia Home Services
We were at the house a number of times for plumbing and heating repairs since November of 2016. I am not sure if the customer is confusing us with someone else because Papalia Plumbing did not replace the electrical panel. We did have our electrician run a wire for a wireless thermostat that the customer wanted installed. The last work we did for the customer was July of 2017 for AC repair. The customer asked for a boiler quote in January of 2017. We did not replace any pumps on the boiler. I would be happy to visit the home and go over these issues with the homeowner and see the work in question. We strive to make all customers happy and to make the right decisions. If an employee made a bad decision and quoted a boiler job when it was not necessary I wish the customer called me right away. I would like to continue this with the homeowner to attempt to rectify the situation.

I like to give them A++. First of all it's a complicated project, pull the permit, on the day get town inspector to come in, need gas company to switched it on. Many contractors I contacted not familiar with this. The estimate was done quickly and very reasonable priced for a big job like this. The office was very responsive, and followed through every communication. I like their use of email. Most importantly, it's Mike, the master plumber and supervisor. I was thoroughly impressed with his work ethic and professionalism. At this busy season, he answered almost all my calls or replied and texted within an hour. Some texts were after dinner. He waited 2 hours for National Grid and worked till 6:30 pm trying to troubleshoot the gas pressure issue. He followed up even after the job was done. Really lucky to have him worked on our home. Big thanks to Mike, and his team. Will definitely ask them next time when I need help, hope they are not too busy.

Papalia's plumbing & HVAC technicians are very good -- polite and competent. I would recommend this company if you don't care about the price. They are very good, but they are crazy expensive. For example, they quoted me a price of $500 to replace an A/C part. It just felt too high, so I just paid their pretty expensive diagnostic fee, and got another company to complete the job for about $200. Earlier we had spent about $150 to replace a standard shower head. I actually felt badly for the company's technicians who had to regularly quote these very high fees.
Description of Work: Our central air conditioning unit had stopped working. I needed the problem diagnosed and repaired. Also used their plumber to replace a shower head.

The cost was a bit on the high side but of all the places we got quotes from, they were the most local and were willing to take the extra time to review our concerns about the recommended size of the boiler. Our old boiler was only 16 years old, and we had expected it to last for a much longer time, so we were trying to ensure that we didn't just repeat the same mistakes.
Description of Work: I had to replace my boiler in December/January. They came out twice, first to assess our needs and provide a quote, the second time to resolve some extra questions we had on the service. They also installed an external hot water tank.

Two plumber showed up, spend two hours and can not root cause where the water comes from. Asked me to repair the ceiling and wait for this happen again. Claims that all plumbing are fine but can not tell me where/why the water comes from. Also claims that because they are NOT there when leak first started so they don't know what happened (water still dripping from ceiling when they arrived)
Description of Work: Diagnostic and repair first floor water leak from ceiling. During morning shower, we noticed water pouring down from first floor ceiling light's rims, and ceiling quickly showed lots of water stain lines/spots. Called Papalia to root cause and repair the water leak issue.

Response from Papalia Home Services
This job was a Saturday morning after-hours service call. An after hours fee was discussed and the technician was dispatched. My technician arrived and saw the water stain and dampness. He tried to recreate the leak using standard operating procedures. He was there for over 2 hours trying to recreate the leak. We diagnosed it was not the plumbing and possibly a toilet overflow or shower out spray. The homeowner refused to pay. We offered to come back on Monday with a Field Supervisor to try again at no additional cost but the homeowner did not want to pay until we proved where the leak came from. We have a policy that if we charge for a leak search and cannot find the leak and it appears again, we will come out at no additional charge with a Field Supervisor. I feel we acted professionally and I would have been happy to go out and search again for the leak if there in fact was one. Jim Papalia, President

From the start, Papalia inspired confidence. I had met with about five other companies before calling Papalia. The phone representative was pleasant and efficient. When Dave Adams, the sales representative for HVAC at Papalia, came to my house at the appointed time, he came prepared with an informative booklet, a lot of knowledge and patience to answer my questions, and shoe covers to protect my floors. He got a quote out to me within a few hours. Dave was thorough in answering all of our (many) questions about the quote. He worked to accommodate our request for a concrete pad rather than pressure treated wood and crushed stone (requested because our house has a history of termites, and we don't want to give them any more incentive to be near the house). Within a week or so, we were able to come to a final agreement. I was expecting to have to wait until mid-July to have the systems installed based on the busy-ness of the A/C install season, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I could have a mid-June installation date. A week before the install date, Dave came out to the house for a thorough inspection of where the systems would go, both indoors and out. He made short videos to explain to the installation crew where the parts should go. On the day of the installation, the Papalia crew (Roger and Matt) showed up right on time. Unfortunately, the parts truck was late, so they had to wait to get to work. However, when the parts truck did arrive, they got right to work in placing the pads, installing the indoor head units, and installing the outdoor compressors. I was curious about the whole process, so I watched some of what they were doing (it was much more fun than the spreadsheet I had to work on!). They were great about answering my questions and said that they didn't mind my company. Both Roger and Matt took care to wear shoe covers in the house to protect the floors. They used drop cloths as they were putting in the indoor units (sawing through the drywall makes a lot of dust). They vacuumed up the dust and debris when they were done and thoroughly cleaned the indoor units to remove smudges/fingerprints leftover from the installation process. Outdoors, Roger and Matt cleaned up the debris left outside. I've never seen a construction crew have their own trash barrel that they take with them around the house! It made the cleanup easy, and they were very thorough, even though at the end of the day, it had started to rain on them. Roger and Matt treated my house as if it were their own, taking care to clean up the inevitable messes of construction and being super-pleasant while doing it. I would highly recommend using Papalia for installation of the ductless mini-split systems. However, I would recommend that you use your own electrician, if you have one that you like. If I could redo the experience, I would still have hired Papalia, but I would have hired my own electrician. The electricians that they used (a separate company from Papalia) left a mess in the basement (insulation, sawdust from drilling holes through the sill to get the wires out to the outdoor units) and on the outside (sawdust from drilling holes, pieces of wire sheathing after stripping the wires). They didn't wear shoe covers in the house most of the time (even though the Papalia guys had given them some to wear). Consequently, there were chunks of dirt left on my bathroom floor and ground into the living room rug (the same rug that the Papalia guys had rolled up to protect it from being right in the path of drywall dust). In contrast to the Papalia guys, the electricians treated my house like a construction zone, not a home. Additionally, the wiring that they had to run across the basement was not neatly organized like the other wires. In several places, the wire crosses over another wire or over heating pipes. The wiring job looks sloppy, especially compared to the neat wiring jobs in the rest of the house. And in another contrast, the head electrician (to differentiate from his apprentice helper) liberally peppered his speech with casual swearing and discussion of his family's foibles, while the Papalia guys were unfailingly polite. I'm not a super goody-two-shoes, but there's just no call for that much swearing from a contractor. I'm not sure why Papalia is working with this particular company, as Roger and Matt (the Papalia guys) were polite, pleasant, mindful of keeping the site as neat and clean as possible, and careful to make the plumbing parts and line set covers as neat and attractive as possible.

We really appreciate your review and kind words. We want your experience with Papalia and our subcontractors to be equally magical. Your review is valuable to us and I get the message. Future customers will not get the same experience you had with our sub-contractor because I have made some changes. I would like to send a different electrician back to make the wiring neater for you. We will be contacting you. Thank you again for your review! Jim Papalia, President
