Patrick is responsive. When we found a minor problem, Patrick took care of the issue promptly and professionally. The entire experience was first rate.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced walls & ceilings that were rotten and contained lead. Workers did an excellent job, in particular the plasterer. Clean-up was decent.

We discovered some water on the inside of our basement. While tracing the problem to its source, we realized that a good portion of the sill was rotted. We requested multiple people to look at the issue and provide an estimate, and Patrick stood out right away. He listened to our concerns, thoroughly investigated the issue, and talked us through the solution. We felt the most confident about his estimate because he had done the most work to see what was wrong. We agreed to the quote and scheduled the job. Patrick showed up on time with one other person. They were professional, courteous, good humored, and pleasant. They took one break, made sure they had all the materials they needed so they didn't need to run for supplies all day long, and finished a big job within a day. They made sure to keep us up to date on their progress, informed us of things they found as they worked, and answered all of our questions, repeating or explaining until we were comfortable. They let us take photos of the work throughout the process so we could document what was done. At the end of the day, Patrick made sure everything was cleaned up. The site was left exactly as they found it, including being swept, straightened, and best of all fixed. Patrick was a pleasure to work with. His professionalism and knowledge were evident throughout the process. We would definitely work with him again.
Description of Work: Replaced about 6 feet of rotted sill, which included removing siding, lifting the house, removing the old sill, and replacing with new sill.

I called Patrick looking to have a few small jobs done on my house - re-grouting of bathrooms, small tile job and painting of a few rooms. He was very friendly and wonderful to talk to over the phone. He directed me two colleagues for the paint and tile work feeling that it would be more cost effective for me to deal directly with a painter and tiler based on the scope of work. He seemed very professional and while I did not use his services, he is definitely someone I would consider for future work. It is always easier working with someone you can communicate with easily.

Overall, I was very impressed with this company. Patrick, the owner, was responsive, friendly, and honest; he even showed up early for the appointment. His evaluation was carried out thoroughly and professionally. We ended up going with another company that specialized in the type of repair we needed, but I would not hesitate to call them again for future projects.

Excellent from start to finish, showed up quickly to do an estimate, and then did the work when they said they would. The only problem, for them, not me, was that it took a little while, and a few phone calls on my part, to get a bill.
Description of Work: After getting estimates in the several thousands, O'Connell carpentry assessed the work necessary to fix my rotted and poorly constructed porch and encouraged me to use my average carpentry skills to do much of the job myself. They removed, sorted and neatly stacked the floorboards so that I was able to reuse many and the total job cost well under what I was afraid I'd have to pay to have my porch look better and last longer.

The project was well executed from start to finish. Patrick and his team were very professional, meticulous, courteous, and most importantly, honest. The price I received was fair, and I would definitely hire O'Connell Carpentry again for future projects. It's a good feeling knowing that as a new homeowner I could trust a contractor to treat my home as if it were his own.

As before his and his crew's work quality was excellent and he was extremely fair on his price. Moreover, he was very responsive in a difficult scheduling situation. He works with integrity. I will not hesitate to use Patrick's services again.
Description of Work: In 2011 contracted for installation of replacement bay window. Incorrect windows were delivered twice by Marvin windows -- no fault of Patrick's. He then advised that I go with Pella and Pella installers. While he was on-site, I had him do considerable repair to trim on house. Recently Patrick rebuilt the entry vestibule to our home and installed a new high-end entry door. He fit this project into his already busy schedule when I urgently needed the work done after mason completed replacement of front entry steps and platform.

This guy is great. He is very personable and he knows his stuff. Best of all, he saved me a ton of money by coming up with a simple solution to my problem. We had a large patch of hardwood flooring that would sag dangerously when we walked on it. The first guy who took a look (probably not a pro) didn't know what to make of it and thought that we might need to tear out the floor to find out. Pat came by and said "let's take a look". Next thing you know, he had punched a hole in my basement ceiling and was inspecting the joist. The joist was fine. Turns out that the floorboards were just separating from the sub-floor. He came back the next Saturday to drive some nails in the floorboards and screw a piece of wood over the hole in the ceiling. Problem solved.
Description of Work: Opened basement ceiling to inspect floor joist. Repaired sagging floorboards. Patched basement ceiling.

Patrick was a pleasure to speak with, both over the phone and in person. He had some great ideas and advice about the project we were planning. He comes across as someone we would have been very comfortable having work in our home. In the end, his price was out of the range of our limited budget. We will definitely contact him to speak about any future work in our home, because he seems to be a very honest person who clearly knows his business.

I haven’t got a quote from him yet but he was very personable. He was on time for the estimate and was just really an honest person. He said that I would find some companies cheaper and some more expensive. He was just a really nice guy and pleasant to deal with. I would like to give him a shot to come out and take a look at a job because I could tell that he was honest and he’s going to give a real consideration. Sometimes it’s hard to get somebody to come out right away.

Mr. O'Connell got back to me promptly about my inquiry and provided a timely estimate. He was enjoyable to deal with and very courteous and professional. He thoroughly evaluated the problem and provided options and recommendations. He could not complete the work immediately due to other jobs, but he gave me a clear idea of the timeline, and he completed the work when he said he would. The job is very well done, and, due to his thorough evaluation initially, I feel like he did a very complete job, and his work will keep us from having future issues with the area of the house that he worked on. Overall, I was very satisfied and would certainly use his services again.

Everything was successful. I have no complaints and only favorable thoughts.
Description of Work: I called Pat to renovate my very large and old condominium in a brownstone to prepare it for sale. The majority of the work involved painting. He was very clear and honest with me that this was not his specialty. However, he contacted one of his painting resources and promised me that the work would be completed on schedule and in a professional manner in time for me to proudly present my property to the real estate market. He did, in fact, keep his promise and worked with the painters to actually ensure an earlier completion date than originally promised. The painting was very neat and all details were addressed in a friendly and helpful manner. The buyers were very impressed with the work as well. I am now getting ready to move to my new place, and Pat O'Connell is at the top of my list for much needed renovations at the new place.

Only a visual inspection was provided, as no work was needed at the time.
Description of Work: Patrick was awesome! Let me just say that. I called 20 contractors in a day, trying to secure someone to inspect a property. Patrick called me back that day! Even though he was swamped he said he could come out and take a look for me. I am in the process of purchasing a home and wanted a contractors opinion, pertaining to possible structural damages. He arrived early, was professional, explained what we were looking and informed me there was really nothing to be concerned. I would most certainly recommend Patrick and his crew. I hope to use them in the future for some renovations.

Patrick and his two-man crew did outstanding work, finished on-time (early, in two and a half days) and on-budget. The floor above that part of the basement is supported much better, and the structure is now secure. The guys were considerate, friendly, and professional. The price was fair for the market, and good for the quality and speed of work. Would definitely hire O'Connell again for this type of work.
Description of Work: Part of our basement was found to be structurally unsound, with sub-standard joists supporting the floor above and the sill unsupported in several locations. Patrick and his guys installed new joists sistered to the old ones, new half walls (2x6 studs on plates) from the existing half-height concrete foundation to support the joists and sill, lally columns with new proper concrete footings, and several sistered boards to secure other split joists and beams elsewhere in the basement. They also did some demo work and cleaned up the area where the renovations were done.

Pat came over for the initial quote. He was punctual, professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. He listened to what we wanted, and knew right away what needed to be done. He also had a good eye in terms of what style would look best for the house. The quote he gave us was reasonable, and it was apparent that he wasn't trying to gouge his customers. When it came time to do the job, he and his team came when he said they would, and it took exactly as long as he said it would. The quality of the work is excellent. And he also cleaned up the work area very well after he finished the job. Pat is a true craftsman, and he sincerely loves carpentry. When it comes time to make additional improvements, we will definitely have O'Connell Carpentry do work for us again.

Pat and his crew were a delight to work with from start to finish. They are polite, clean, timely and professional. They aim to do the job right and were not satisfied until I was satisfied. I would definitely use them again. Everything looks beautiful and functions well. I am very picky about how things are done and this did not phase Pat, in fact, he seemed pleased at the attention to detail and takes pride in his work.
Description of Work: Pat and his crew did two projects in my home. The first was constructing a boxed bay window on the front of the house with a roof at the same pitch as the house. The second was to add two large windows to my bedroom that needed to match the windows that were already in the room which were 12 years old.

Patrick and his additional crew of 2 were total professionals, very fast, and very courteous. I highly recommend Patrick's services. The job was scheduled in advance, and Patrick was thorough in inspection and quoting. This was a somewhat tricky job, but Patrick and crew were very fast and organized, started on time, and actually finished a day ahead of schedule. This job was completed as part of the negotiations on a house sale, and Patrick was very diplomatic in dealing with all parties concerned, and listening to all inputs. His knowledge and judgement are sound, and we felt confident with the job in his hands. All elements of the job were completed as discussed, and checked off in a final walk through. The job site was left perfectly clean and all debris removed. Patrick is very quick to respond, and a good communicator. He stands by his word, and overall exceeded my expectations. I absolutely will call him again next time I need carpentry work done.
Description of Work: Structural support of a basement ceiling, in an older single family house extension room. This involved sistering beams across entire span, erection of pony walls to support cross beams, erecting lally columns and poured concrete footings underneath a brick fireplace area, repairing / leveling concrete wall areas, erecting a discrete open frame wall section, and miscellaneous small jobs.

Although we did not use OC carpentry to re-do the fron porch steps/ railing ( he was too busy do do it in the timeframe our condo association required) I am confident that whoever hires this contractor will get someone who KNOWs what they are doing and will do the job right.
Description of Work: I was in charge of having our condo association's front porch steps rebuilt. Ed O'Connell personally inspected a shoddy porch steps/railing installed by a previous "contractor" ( more like a handyman- who was not so handy). He detailed all the defects with the existing structure (code violations, etc.) and showed me what SHOULD have been done in a detailed email report. I was very much impressed.

Patrick and his crew did outstanding quality work. They took no short cuts in a difficult situation with an older home. I also like the fact that he used quality fir on the railings from a lumber yard as opposed to discount off the shelf material from a lesser DIY bulk store. They showed up when promised, left the inside of the house spotless and finsihed on time. I asked Patrick for some other ideas on things I wanted done as well as an estimate too. He had very good cost effective recommendations that solved existing problems in a way that I didn't even think of. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. He's also most current on his knowledge of building codes so you don't have to worry that the inspectors will be coming back to make you rework anything -very important!

I decided to hire Pat O'Connell both from reading Angie's List reviews and from my own impressions getting an estimate from him. Although I was struck by how expensive this clapboard work is, the thoroughness of his care and workmanship made it worthwhile. (Pat's estimate was nearly equal to another respected one I obtained). The material cost was $1800. On carpentry repair work, often it's impossible to know in advance how much decayed or deficient material will be found that will increase the scope of the job. Pat's policy for such incremental work beyond contract is very fair at $40/person-hour, considerably less than other carpenters charge. For these reasons I rate him an "A" for price and value received. Pat and his assistants are friendly, agreeable, and courteous. All of my work was exterior, but I would have no reservations about having them in my house. They exceeded my expectations in caring for my property during the job. When removing downspouts from the gutters, one of his assistants immediately plugged the open pipe going to my underground drywell, to prevent debris from falling in. Pat prompted us to remove pictures from the inside walls where vibration from their hammering might cause something to fall. They clean up completely at the end of each work day. They pay careful attention to quality and workmanship; for example, precise and consistent expansion gaps at ends of clapboards where they come to cornerboard or window frames (then filled the gaps with elastic caulk). Pat is committed to doing the whole job right. The parts kit with the new storm door had an excess of short screws, but not enough long screws. He could have chosen not to say anything, and simply spaced out the long screws and used short ones in between. But he didn't. He went back to the supplier the next morning to make an exchange, to use proper length screws everywhere, all with matching white heads. Pat asked permission before posting his lawn sign (which is a tasteful design). You might want to establish with him how long he will leave it in place, however. I was surprised he left it after completing my job, but he collected it promptly when I emailed him "long enough" at ten days.
Description of Work: Replaced deteriorated siding on the front of my house with pre-primed CVG cedar clapboards; (all of the 1st story plus some areas of existing clapboard on the 2nd story). Opened the garrison overhang soffit to reposition and increase the fiberglas insulation in the soffit. Replaced my front storm door with a new insulated-core storm door. Investigated and replaced rotted wood in the 2nd story cornerboard above the work area (this amounted to $400 beyond the $6100 original estimate because the rot had gone back into the plywood sheathing underneath, demanding replacement, along with more clapboard on the 2nd story). Detail work included mountings for new lighting fixtures, and substituting Amerimax M0634 U-clips (I discovered and bought at Home Depot) instead of metal straps to hold the downspouts in place.

After interviewing 5 plus builders Patrick was the most honest about the work, timeline and cost that was to be involved. He started on time, ripping down a 7x 12 sun porch and wall inside the living area to open up the living space. With very little direction about what I wanted the room to look like Patrick created an area that is beautiful and very useable. He replaced the house?s 16 windows with Harvey replacement. The trim for every window and doorway?s were replaced along with new baseboard in six rooms. Patrick was professional about the whole process, asking if I needed to have anything done differently and check if I was pleased every step of the way. He was very generous with extras that came up along the way. He never seemed phased when changes were asked to be made, and often just included them. I would not hesitate to use Patrick again for any home project.
Description of Work: Patrick Ripped down a dilapidated sun-porch 7X12, and wall to open up living area. Rebuilt room for livable space. Replace 16 windows and added new trim to all windows, doorways and kickers in all of the house ,along with crown molding in living room.
