Superb! Patrick delivered all his promises. The job was done on time and within budget. Patrick was very easy to work with; he was patient and explained everything along the way. There were some unexpected surprises once the job was underway but he took care of them without extra charges. We couldn't be happier and will definitely use him again.

Pat O'Connell and his team were excellent. Pat is very knowledgeable and his crew was punctual, friendly and hardworking. The job included removing old windows and extending the window openings to turn 2 windows into 5 windows. The drywall had to be replaced on 2 full walls. All work was completed in only 4 days, including all finishing inside and out and the room was repainted including the ceiling. All clean-up was done. We were very satisfied with the whole process; quote, scheduling, skill, workmanship. We recommend Pat O'Connell without hesitation to anyone with home remodeling or woodworking projects, large or small.

Pat met with us and provided an estimate to add a new bedroom window. We scheduled the start date, and he and his workers began the project on time. They did a great job, and finished quickly. It was quality work at a fair price. I highly recommend Pat.

Having worked with Pat on a previous project, I knew the level of service and quality of work that I would be getting with the next project. I needed to redo my daughters bathroom as well as relocate my laundry room to the basement. On the initial conversation regarding the bathroom, I couldn't expand the floor plan as I originally wanted, Pat suggested adding a closet and desk nook to my daughter's room in the area I had slated for the bathroom expansion. Once we agreed upon the work to be done, Pat suggested places to get ideas and where to pick out the items needed for the bathroom. The timeline was followed very close and even when I kept adding minor things to the overall project it didn't affect the timeline. Pat ensures that you are informed throughout your project as well as works with in the budget set for the project. He is also updating you throughout the process as well as making sure that what you want is what you get. We were extremely happy with the quality of work, the level of professionalism with all of the different tradesmen that were involved in our project. Both the bathroom and my daughter's room look fantastic. And we now have the laundry in the area that works best for our family.

The numerous glowing reviews by others speak for themselves. We have trusted Pat exclusively to work on multiple areas/aspects of our two homes in the past 10 years in Newton and South Natick and keep going back to him! The scope and variety of work that he's done is numerous and all have been done with exceptional thought, quality, and attention to detail. We honestly couldn't/wouldn't hire anyone else.
Description of Work: We have used Pat for numerous projects over the past 10 years from replacing 3 enormous skylights in our kitchen, to foundation work, to partial bathroom remodel, to replacing 4 windows and framing on the front of my house, and now to deck replacement. There are too many other works to mention.

Pat met with us and discussed the job. He sent us an estimate, which he followed to the dollar. We set a tentative date for the work to be done. When the time came, Pat was prompt and efficient. He had one helper with him and they completed the work in a day and a half. The new steps and landing have changed the whole look of the house for the better. We are quite pleased with the results.
Description of Work: We needed a new set of stairs off our back porch. We wanted the new structure to be wider and more comfortable to walk down. Our stairs at the time had no landing and the railings were rotting.

We found Pat O'Connell through Angie's list and are very pleased with the work performed. Pat was very accommodating, direct, and always worked to exceed expectations. Schedules and expectations were always clearly communicated, and he went out of his way to work around our schedules. We will certainly call him again and would recommend him to friends and family.
Description of Work: Having recently purchased the house, built in 1910, with the last remodel being some time in the early 90's, we were looking to substantially update the first floor. The project required removing walls (load bearing and non-bearing) to open up the kitchen, dining room and living room for a much more open floor plan. In addition, the kitchen and front hall contained an old tile floor, which was removed and replaced with white oak to match the existing original wood floors throughout the rest of the house. Pat was very up front about not being able to match the old floors exactly, but unless you look closely its really hard to tell, and the floors came out beautifully. The project also included a full gut of the kitchen, mud-room, and first floor bathroom, down to the studs. New insulation (soundproofing) was added to several walls, along with new plumbing (water heater, washer/dryer, etc.) and electrical (breaker panel, lighting, HVAC, etc.). The ceilings in the kitchen were also raised back to their original level, with new recessed lighting installed. As we got farther into the project we added several additional items that were not part of the original project scope (such as the install of a large patio door) and Pat was very accommodating. As avid DIYers our plan from the start was to install an Ikea Kitchen in the newly renovated space and Pat worked around our schedules as we installed the kitchen cabinetry over the course of several weekends, and was always willing to lend a hand or offer suggestions as we worked through the layout of the space. Overall we are very happy with Pat's work and the outcome of this project.

This is the second time I used Pat. This was to replace and rebuild back stairs and porch . Azek was used for stairs and porch which increased the price over wood. Pat used red cedar for railings and ,after installation , he was nice enough to adjust the height of the railing at my request at no extra cost. He actually refused to take more than the original estimate , even though it caused an additional 2 hours . Pat is always fair and ,goes without saying, a highly competent master carpenter. He is hands on , a very good communicator , and responsive. Would recommend him to anyone.

Pat O’Connell is the owner and master carpenter of a building business doing business as O’Connell Carpentry. He has been in the trade for about 20 years and this business has going on ten years of history. He runs a small operation and keeps overhead down, and works on site on the project – which means that he fixes issues as they arise, rather than coming the following day to discover that something was done imperfectly and then subsequent work has gone onto a tangent because of it. In my experience, finding a competent carpenter is not the hard part in hiring a general contractor, although certainly some carpenters are willing to have it “good enough.” Pat is meticulous, and wants it right. It gnaws at him to look at something that was not up to his standard. But the difficult part in working with a General Contractor is either that they are not great communicators, or, that they don’t take accountability for the workmanship and timeliness of their subcontractors. This can cause bathrooms, for example, to drag on for weeks or months, because there are so many little steps requiring first a plumber, then the electrician, then the plumber, then the carpenter, then the glass guy, then the plumber again. Pat is an excellent organizer and an excellent communicator. If you call him with a question small or large, he’ll call you back. It doesn’t matter what time it is or what day it is, or if you are going to tell him he did something wrong (rare), or if you are going to change his mind. You don’t need to dread that he won’t want to take your call, or won’t want to call you back. He does, he gets on it, he gets his subcontractors involved, and he sorts it out. He’s outstanding in those regards. As to his subcontractors, he has the very smart strategy of working long term with a relatively small number of subcontractors that he trusts. This means that those guys rely a lot on Pat for business, so when he calls, they jump to. When you need them to show up on a specific day and time, Pat’s job ranks right up the list of priorities for them. The reality is that they are their own independent operators, so he can’t order them around. But he uses a great combination of good personal style, long term business relationship, and a no BS approach, so he gets what he needs, which means the client gets what they need. He probably brought in 7-8 different subcontractors (different specialties) for our job. I’d give 6 of them an A grade. 1 or 2 of them needed a kick sometimes, but Pat was the one doing the kicking. So it worked. Because of the nature of our project, we wanted the flexibility to change our mind as we went along and to change things if they didn’t look good. Therefore, we did not structure a fixed rate contract but rather did a “pay as you go” for fees and materials related to construction and carpentry. Most of the subcontractors were fixed rate, negotiated and managed by Pat. He did a good job of keeping the subcontractors at a fair rate. Although I don’t necessarily know what everything should cost, he does – and he did a good job of looking out for our interests. There were plenty of times that Pat went above and beyond for us. We had a large project in a four month window, and we were forced to move in on a certain date. There was a delay caused by the late arrival of a sink – partially my own doing – and Pat and his kitchen subcontractor negotiated and even paid extra to get the counter top guys to come on a Sunday just to make sure that we had a kitchen when we moved in. Many contractors would tell you “well, just move in and you’ll have a counter soon enough.” In another example, the baseboard heaters weren’t fully functioning in the fall when it started to get cold, and the cause of the problem was a bit of a mystery. Pat worked two full days and got the plumber there for three full days trying to test and fix, and finally they brought in a specialist who helped solve it. None of that was charged to me. That’s an example that Pat takes full accountability to make things right. There are other examples, but Pat has a value system that you want in someone you work with. I highly recommend Pat, and will hire him for any and all work I need done.
Description of Work: We did a relatively large renovation project with a major phase of work lasting 4 months, followed by follow-up work over a couple of months. This involved demolition of a wall, a kitchen, a doorway, two bathrooms and the entire 2nd floor. Pat put in 2 new bathrooms, a new kitchen, walk-in closet, new windows, totally new electrical, half new piping for baseboard heating, removal of oil burner installation of gas furnace, new hardwood floors in some rooms and resurfacing 100% of the hardwood floors, including staining.

We can't recommend O'Connell Carpentry enough. From the beginning, Pat was likeable, honest and up front with us about our project and how much it would cost. Our project consisted of demolishing an old, out-of-code front porch and building a new custom porch. I was really concerned with our porch not looking cheap. Pat understood that and helped us choose materials. When the time came to start the project, he and his team built all of the components right there in our driveway. The result is a gorgeous front porch that all of our neighbors are commenting on. He and his team started on time, stuck to the timeline and even managed to charm our sometimes grouchy next door neighbor! O'Connell Carpentry was a pleasure to work with. We'll be calling them again!

Pat came when he promised and as always, did fine work. The final bill was $1k less than quoted! Once they removed the stucco from under the porch, the footings did not need to be replaced, as originally estimated. This was a welcome surprise, we really appreciate Pat's honesty and integrity, he could have easily charged the full amount without telling us. Also, we have called Pat with questions regarding our current project (new vinyl siding), he has taken time from his busy schedule to come over to the house and answer our questions and offered great suggestions. Pat is a kind, honest, talented carpenter.

This was the second time we hired O'Connell Carpentry and Remodeling. They replaced our porch stairs the first time around and we were impressed with the work and asked them come back to replace our front doors. Pat and crew are really professional and easy to work with. Pat is timely, responsive, and keeps a clean work-site. Pat and his assistant did a top-notch job over about three days this past summer. He gave us detailed and accurate estimates for wood only and for wood and plastic. We decided on the latter and he built a beautiful, solid staircase and thoroughly cleaned up all debris. I also appreciate how generous he was with his time when asked about some unrelated home improvement projects as well as his graciousness when our final check bounced by accident! Pat is smart and a good communicator (phone and email) and I would have no hesitations to use him again.

Pat and his two assistants did a beautiful job, and the new pieces were carefully matched to the existing historical woodwork in our 1889 home. One of the trim pieces had a non-standard profile, but Pat was able to improvise a close match. Pat came by to give me an estimate within a few days of my contacting him. He was busy, so there was a 10 week wait before he could do the work, but he told me that up front and the job was done when promised. He was easy to communicate with (by phone and email) and explained clearly and in detail what the work would involve. He was professional and courteous, and very efficient. The work was completed in one day (instead of the estimated two days) and I was charged 20 percent less than what he originally estimated. I am very happy with the end result, and I would definitely use Pat again for any carpentry job. Note that the work did not include staining the new woodwork to match the old woodwork, which will be done by someone else.

Went fine, I like him, he was honest. The price quoted though represented a level of work that I didn't think we needed. I have since proven that correct, though perhaps his solution was going to have taken less time. It was still over 15K more than what we ended up with.
