Description of Work: Replaced coils for central air. Even though they didn't install, were able to get the mfg warantee on parts. Professional, friendly, clean. Seemed a little high priced, but I didn't shop around. Tech arrived 4 hours late but stayed until 8:00pm to finish the job. He was dedicated to get the job done on the day they promised.

Description of Work: Our Central Air Conditioner started acting up during one of the hottest periods we have ever experienced in Louisiana. The indoor component of the unit would come on but the fan on the outside component would not, resulting in warm air. We called AireServ because they had an A rating on Angie’s List and were one of the only companies to offer a discount for going through Angie’s list. The repairman came promptly, was very courteous, even donning boot covers before entering our home, lest he track in dirt. I briefly described the problem and accompanied him to the outside unit. He informed us that we needed to clean around the base of the unit because it needed to be able to breathe better, which seemed reasonable. After he took the cover off the unit, he immediately discovered that the portion of the unit to which the electrical contacts (contactor pole) were made had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. I asked how that could have happened and he said it was probably due to arcing. Without inquiring about whether we wanted an estimate to make the repair, he proceeded to replace the part, which seemed to do the trick because the fan began operating. I was grateful because it seemed like a pretty simple repair that took him less than 15 minutes. He also tested the Freon and discovered that it needed to be charged, which he proceeded to do. While the Freon was being charged, he inspected the upstairs unit, which took about half an hour. All told he was at our home for less than an hour. The cost of this service was $470 (less $47 for the 10% Angie’s list discount), which seemed high to me, but because it was so hot, I felt that it was worth it. The bill separated the cost of repairing the contactor pole ($316.53) and the Freon charge ($154), but provided no breakdown for parts and labor charges. I couldn’t imagine the contactor pole would cost very much and the 15 minutes it took to change it certainly didn’t seem worth $316. Furthermore, another local company was offering to charge air conditioners with Freon for $49, so $154 seemed high for that. But again, we were glad that the air conditioner was working again and seemed to be cooling more effectively, so I wasn’t too upset about the cost. Unfortunately, the fan stopped working again the next day. We called the company, and again they were punctual in getting to us. This time we asked them to provide cleaning and service in addition to the repair and the cost was $400, again with no itemization. However the repairman did have to work very hard in the heat to clean the unit, so I actually thought that the labor cost was reasonable. However the fan stopped working again the next day. We called the company and this time spoke to the owner about how much money we had invested already and still didn’t have a working air conditioner. He said that he would send a different repairman and that if we considered buying a new unit from his company he would not charge for the third service call and discount the cost of a new unit by the cost of the second service call, which seemed like a pretty generous offer. The new guy discovered that the condenser fan motor needed to be replaced at a cost of $500. As I’ve said we had already invested over $800 in the unit, and since the owner said that he’d waive this cost if we purchased a new unit (he didn’t indicate a time frame), I wasn’t too concerned about this charge even though again there was no itemization and the charge seemed exorbitant to me. This repair did seem to fix the unit, though, and it has been working fine ever since. I believe that the bad motor fan was the problem all along and the contactor pole was just a symptom of that, so if the first guy had diagnosed the problem and provided an estimate of the total cost we may have opted to just buy a new unit. Nevertheless, we were glad that we finally had a working unit. Unfortunately, after about a week, the owner called and wanted to set up a meeting to discuss the purchase of the new unit. We told him that it seemed that old one, into which we had already put over $800 in repair costs, was working and we’d like to wait on getting a new one – but that we would certainly work through his company. He said OK, but then sent us the bill for the third service call, albeit reduced by $75 because he generously gave us the “member discounted rate”. The bottom line for me was that this company probably strung us along; milking us of the repair costs when all along their intent was to sell us a new unit. We have since learned that as a general rule if a repair is going to cost more than $500 for an older unit (>15yrs, which is how old our unit is), it is probably better to consider buying a new one. However, in the grueling Louisiana summer heat, it is not always possible to properly reason through air conditioner problems, which the industry can take advantage of, and I believe this is what happened to me. We hope that our old air conditioner will make it through another summer or two, but the next time it goes down, we will definitely be buying another one, but certainly not from AireServ.
