Description of Work: Mack's stained my new back porch which included railings, stairs and lattice. They had to wait for dry weather, but once they started, they completed it in one day. The only concern I had was that they neglected to get in between the deck boards and it was very noticeable since we used a dark color. I emailed them and they sent someone out the next day to take care of it. I was pleased with their professionalism and responsiveness. They also kept me updated by email as we waited for the weather to cooperate so the job could be started.

I appologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, we had not received your signed proposal that we mailed you back in August, until the last day of October. Because of this, we had other jobs scheduled, and due to the weather, it has been nearly impossible to get this kind of work started in between other jobs. I will be sending you a refund out today. Thank you for your time.
Mack and his crew replaced a significant amount of rotten trim, painted our house, installed lights and several electrical outlets. They also did some misc things like fix a few broken tiles, put in some plywood flooring in the attic for storage, changed out a rotten door and re did some prior finish work another crappy carpenter did. I am picky when it cones to contractors, Mack and his crew exceeded my expectations, the quality of work, and attention to detail was as good as it gets. The whole crew were just great guys. You can tell they really care about doing the job right. They also stayed on budget, and have great communication through the whole process. They always arrived on time, and the follow up by mack during and after the job was excellent. Worksite was also clean and neat. I am already scheduleding more work with Mack for next year. I would highly recommend these guys.

Mack and his assistant were great. Very friendly, punctual, and professional. The price was reasonable and exactly what was quoted to me the previous day. I could tell that he was trying to save me as much money as possible, and even gave me a great referral to fix some floor damage. I was very pleased with the overall experience and will not hesitate to use Mack again.

Mac and his helper showed up on time and promptly got to work. I had wanted some wood that had dry rot replaced. Mac made an assessment and warned me that there were deeper structural issues with the porch which would require the porch be replaced in a few years time. I asked him to proceed with the work regardless, which he did. He was quick and the job was professionally complete.

Thank you for your great review! We appreciate your business and are happy to hear you are satsified with the work that was done at your home!
Overall, excellent service, for a very good price. I had some rot on the back of my house where water had gotten in behind some wood. Mack came, gave me an estimate, and a few months later (as agreed) returned to do the work. One glitch occurred--I have two dormers, and initially only one was fixed. There was a small communication problem between Mack and his worker, and the worker only did one of the two sides. When I called to explain, Mack apologized and sent someone back to fix the problem at the next reasonable time. (Rain kept the work from being done immediately, so it was about a week and a half before this was addressed.) Overall, the work done was extremely professional--so while I reduced the responsiveness and professionalism score, I left all other scores high. I'd use him again for this type of work. Rob

Mack was punctual for our first meeting to look at the wood rot damage. He gave me a price quote on the spot. A workman on his staff came to do the actual repair and was also punctual and courteous and finished in a timely fashion. I'm not a contractor so I'm trusting that the work done was of appropriate quality. It certainly looks fine to me. The final invoice matched the quoted price. Overall a good experience and I would work with them again.

IT IS GOING GREAT!!!!!!!!! They have had to repair so much rotting wood on my deck! The rotted wood is mainly underneath the deck which sits up above the ground 8-10 feet? They are doing a beautiful JOB! The price has been VERY VERY FAIR!!!! My husband and I would have to say this has been the best experience we have had working with contractors:) Mack, the owner is a great guy and true to his word - When Mack came out to my home to look at the job he listened to me and did not try to over talk me and tell me I needed to do work which was not needed. His carpenters are a great bunch of men! they are gentlemen and they are hard workers! I think there is a great deal of respect between Mack and his crew. The whole experience has been great from dealing with Kristie, his admin. assistant setting up work and getting the contract out to us -Also showing up when they say they will. We are also now talking with Mack about repairing our front stairway which is concrete in bad condition - There is not enough good words I can say about Mack and his company! my sister came out to see the work and was very impressed with Mack and his crew she is thinking about hiring them to repair her back stairs. My husband and I will always have Mack & company on quick dial!:) Sincerely, Kathy
Description of Work: Mack & Company are still working on my Deck - It was ready to come down! Very ROTTED STRUCTURE!!!! The work has been completed the price was GREAT! if you saw my deck you would understand! Mack is a man of his word he said he would be back before the bad weather to finish it up -(mind you this was more rotted wood that was found). We were VERY HAPPY with the whole experience from beginning to end. We hope to have Mack and crew back next spring to do more work on other issues that we have going on.

So I purchased one of those Angie's list deals for 199 to fix some rotting wood trim on my house. Mack came out and gave me an estimate in July. He wanted to replace the rotting trim on my house with Azek, to make sure it didn't rot again. Azek is more expensive. That's ok. "We're gonna do it right." Great! I didn't get a written quote (my mistake) but it was clear that to replace the trim in multiple locations, it would cost more than the 199. Totally fine. The 4 Angie's list hours are 50 dollars and anything after that Mack charges 76 dollars/hour. Ok, great, in my head I'm thinking 1, maybe 2K by the time all is said and done, plus the cost of materials... They are booking 2 months out because they are busy. No problem. Fast Forward... -9/3 I get a call from the office that Mack's crew is coming Monday. -9/5 I get a call from the office that Mack's crew is coming Tuesday. -9/8 I get a call that it will be Thursday because they are backed up at another job. Ok. -9/12 I called because Thursday came and went and nothing happened. I get a return call that they are still working at the other job and plan to be out next Tuesday (9/16), not sure what time. Christine said she'd call me Monday (9/15) to confirm... In the meantime I have a family emergency that requires me to hop on a plane 9/17. After not hearing back 9/15 with that confirmation from Christine, I call 9/16 AM to tell her that I'm not sure if Mack's is possibly coming today, but if not can we please reschedule because I am mid-family emergency and have too much happening. I received a return call that she was not in the office yesterday and that they are already on their way. Ok. I would have liked that 9/15 confirmation after so many false starts, but I get it. I'm busy, they're busy, things happen. The crew arrived shortly after that, (Mack also made an appearance), and I let them know that I tried to cancel and I am mid-family emergency and will not be home to close the deal when they are done but could square up when I got back. They were gracious and said no problem. The men were all quite polite and seemed ready to get down to business. One of the men accidentally cursed within earshot of me and apologized profusely. (Honestly I didn't even hear what he said). The day went smoothly, work was getting done, I was in my own little world preparing to fly out to deal with the family tragedy. The following day (9/17), the crew arrived as I was returning from dropping my son at preschool (about 9:30?) and apologized for being late due to traffic. It was alright with me as I wasn't even keeping tabs on what time to expect them. Not a problem. I was on a plane a couple of hours later. When my plane touched down, my husband texted me to say that the crew was just leaving when he pulled into the driveway at 5:30, and that things looked good. So I go deal with the family tragedy & I fly home Monday the 29th. I receive a voice message on Wednesday 10/1 that Mack wants to stop by to pick up the check. Ok. I call back and leave a voice message that I just got back and am ready to write a check as soon as I see the bill. In the meantime, Mack arrives at the door, looking at me like I might have been thinking of stiffing him or something. He said Christine sent an email and a bill. (For the record, the "email" was a message that went to my Angie's list account, not something I was casually logging into). I told him I'm sorry, reminded him that I had a family emergency and I just got back into town and hadn't seen the bill yet. I sort through the pile of mail that I'm working my way through (did I mention I also have a 2 and 4 year old?) Anyhow, I quickly whip through the pile and lo and behold, a bill from Mack- for 5468.91!!! Whoa- this seems over twice what I was thinking it would be. But Mack's now at my door, the work looks good, so I pay it in full. After looking closer at the bill, I realize this included the 199 I had already paid, so really it was 5667.91 for everything said and done. Just over 1000 in materials (Azek is expensive, I get it, no problem.) The part that surprised me, over 4500 dollars in labor. ***What was absolutely not made clear to me in the verbal quote was that it was 76 dollars an hour, for each and every person that was here (4 men for 8.5 hours the first day and 3men at 9 hours the 2nd). The quote says 9 hours X3 men for the second day but they were here 9:30-5:30? Now I realize why I was getting apologies for them being late- because I was still being charged for it! Anyhow, I'm too tired to dispute. The work was done very well from what I can tell, and I had culpability in this (not getting a written quote, not rescheduling during a time when I was around to see the work being performed, etc). Had I gotten a written quote, that would have changed my course of action significantly. So to sum it up? The work looks great, the crew is very nice, but please, for the love of all that is holy, get a written quote first so you know exactly what you're getting into. PS-Mack did call me "honey" and "sweetheart" as another reviewer had stated, but I didn't really care. If it bother's you, I'd try elsewhere. EDIT- I spoke to Mack's receptionist following this review. It is true that I did sign a proposal on 8/5 indicating "will charge 76 hour after the 3 hours of work", (4 which I had already paid for through Angies list, minus 1 hour for pickup of materials) and yes, that was my understanding too. In actuality, it was 304/hour on the first day, and 228/hour on the second day. What was not made clear (verbally or in the proposal) was that it was 76 dollars per worker per hour, and/or the amount of workers that would be showing up on any given day. I remain unconvinced that there were 61 man hours of work that was done, and the sticker shock still has me in shock.

Thank you for your review! We are happy to hear that you are pleased with the work our men did at your home. I understand you are a little upset about the time frame of starting the job, however, when we deal with wood rot repair it is very hard to estimate a finish date. What looks like a one day job easily turns into a 4 day job once they open it up, and can not just blow off the current job to start another, which you seemed to be very understanding of that situation over the phone. As far as the pricing, you signed a contract with the estimate. Im a little bit confused as to why you have said you didnt receive a quote. The signed proposal has a post-it attached, from you, stating; "There was a spot Mack suggested I re-paint. It turned out to be rotted too. Could you please ask Mack to add 2 more 1x4x8's to the list (of Azek)? Thanks, [member name removed].". On which was signed and dated 8/5/14. I mailed you the invoice dated 9/18, on 9/19. I had called you on 10/1 and left you a message because it had only rang twice before the voicemail picked up, and only then did I try reaching out through the other form of communication we had, Angie's List.

This was the worst experience I have ever had with an Angie's List contractor--and I have used many. In fact, all of the work I've had done over the last 9 years has been from someone I found on Angie's List. So I'm no newbie with higher than reasonable expectations. I bought a Deal for 4 hours of handyman service for wood rot repair. I purchased this on 6/27/14. It took weeks to make an appointment, and then Mack was a no-show more than once. Additionally, he promised us a proposal, which I had to ask for, and they finally provided on 8/27--two months after I purchased the deal. I decided to go with the proposal, even though it did not include a time or cost estimate; rather only an hourly rate. What a mistake! After I returned the proposal, I did not hear from them for several weeks. Finally, I called to try to get my money back because this had been going on for so long. At first, the receptionist tried to tell me that they were booking more than a month out. When I asked for my money back, she told me they could be there the next day (Hmmm--I wonder who they blew off for that speed?). They arrived on time, and were very personable. However, I told them to start on the stairs and then check back with me on the rest of the work that could be done. They did the entire thing without checking in. A couple days later I received an invoice. I was completely surprised, and I should NEVER be surprised by an invoice. This included $466 for materials, which I know they didn't use up. I saw the men loading up extra wood and materials into their truck afterwards. Yet I was expected to pay for everything they bought. They didn't leave me any leftovers. Additionally, they charged $910 above and beyond the deal I had already paid for in labor. Again, this was for work I didn't authorize, and for which they gave me no clear time estimate. When I called the owner to complain, at first all he did was defend the company's actions, by implying that I had approved everything and that it all was standard procedure. Then, while calling me honey, dear, and sweetheart, he finally agreed to waive the materials charge. I will pay for the labor they expended. I thought all was done. But wait, there's more. I got an email today, about a week after I received the invoice (and a couple days after i had the conversation with the boss about the bill), asking me to send the money right away, or they would pick up a check tomorrow. Really? After all that, they wanted to hound me for the money, though most invoices are net 30? Really. yes, that's the way they played it. I will never use this company again, and I do not recommend them in the least. The work seems to be well done, but I have no real way to know that yet. In the end, it seems that Mack might indeed honor his agreement.

We are holding customer responsible for labor costs and material costs. The material that was returned was deducted from the final price, listed on customers invoice. Attached to invoice is a receipt for all material costs that went into that project, along with unused material that was returned.(-$128.01). Customer signed a contract stating that she is responsible for labor (which was given a discount at time of estimate) and material costs. We have went above and beyond to keep customer satisfied and there is no happy medium here. Customer was very pleased to have work completed in a timely manner, was walked throughout the job site, before jobs started, and when they were completed by owner's son. She never once implied that she was unsatisfied. All work completed is in written contract signed by customer. No work was done without her knowledge, customer was at job site the entire day. No problems were brought to our attention until AFTER the invoice was received, then she decides to say work was done without her knowledge. Our men came back to the office saying how pleased this customer is. Her behavior/review is shocking, and we are holding her responsible for the amount of $1,248.36 which $128.01 in material has been deducted.

1) New sill in rear entrance to garage is cracked in half, which I didn't notice until I went out to prep for painting because I don't use the back door. 2) Waterproof vinyl covering on sill on left-hand side. 3) New sill in screened area entrance was installed at an angle leaving open ends exposing rotting wood. An unsuccessful attempt was made to fill in the space on left side, with two pieces of wood. 4) A diagonal support beam in the left-hand side of the garage was ripped down when installing sill and pushed to the side where it hangs unattached from the ceiling. 5) Sills are covered with waterproofed plastic so I cannot ascertain the condition of the new wood sills elsewhere. 6) The outside sill was cut wrong, and the riser, which doesn't touch the pavement on one side is jammed at an angle over the rotten wood beneath leaving gaps on either side exposing rotted wood. 8) The stapled screen came undone in approximately a week. 7) Instead of replacing the badly worn back garage door, as I'd requested, it was patched together with screwed-in right-angle braces. There was a breakdown in communication and lack of professionalism from the beginning to the end of the project. A month passed before I was able to get a commitment for the work to be started. When Mack assessed the job, he indicated that it could likely be done within the 4 hours stipulated in the Angie's Deal. There was also provisions in the deal for an unspecified number of additional hours at an hourly rate. I repeatedly requested a written contract describing what would be done and at what cost. I was repeatedly told that it was in the mail. I never did get a work plan or contract. What I did get was an invoice that he went back to his office to get on at lunchtime. When the work was underway, evidently it was more involved that anticipated. Instead of talking to me and asking how to proceed, he took it upon himself to do what I requested, except replacing the garage door. In trying to finish up in 8 hours, he rushed to replace the final sill, as described in 5) above. Had we had a discussion, perhaps the work could have been done satisfactorily with a little more time spent. I didn't want to write this review, and hesitated for some time. I called Mack's office before writing it and left a message letting him know I was not a satisfied customer. I waited several days for a call back, and it was a voice message from his secretary asking me to call her if she could be of help. The one bright note is that his assistant was courteous and seemed to be conscientious.

I am quite shocked to hear, over a month later, that you are unhappy with the work completed. I am sorry you feel this way, and surprised you did not call sooner. I was out of the office Monday and called you back the day I had received your message. I called you to resolve the problem, which I was still unaware of what that problem was. Had you called us sooner to let us know how unsatisifed you were, we could have sent Mack back out to fix these problems. I would like to have him come check out the work that you think was not done properly. It is very important that we know these issues when they happen. I wish you had returned my call and I hate that so much time has gone by, because again, these issues could have been resolved a month ago.

We have been using his services for many years and over that time we've had him paint our home in Marblehead, MA, which requires forty foot ladders. He also installed Oak Flooring in our bedrooms and about seven years ago we had him remodel our entire large kitchen. As it turns out we have three decks on the back of the house, which he completely rebuilt with pressure treated and Trek. I would highly recommend Mack, who is very responsive and has been reasonable with excellent workmanship.
Description of Work: I own a three-family investment property in Salem, MA and all three porches in the back of the house had to be rebuilt with pressure treated infrastructure, new pressure treated posts, which were all wrapped with Never Rot and the flooring is Trek with plastic railings. There is also a front porch on the second floor that had the same done to it.

The job went well, the crew was very professional and it looks fabulous with a replacement wood that will never rot. The crew fought yellow jackets while working this job. All walked away without being stung. I did ask them for an extra piece of trim to be replaced after they had packed up all of their equipment. A quick call to Mack who approved and they very quickly pulled out their tools and replaced the trim. It looks awesome.
Description of Work: The soffet was rotted and needed to be replaced. The gutter had to be taken down first, the soffet replaced and the gutter put back.

Our house has a front porch with wooden slats. The flooring had settled and become unstable. Also the outside door for the porch, scraped against the floor causing us to lift it to open it. We were very concerned that the porch was unstable and needed extensive repair. We contacted Mack the last week of June to have him take a look at our porch. He gave us an estimate very quickly and began the work on July 2nd. He showed up when he told us he would and finished within 2 days. Mack replaced the wooden slats and took a look at the joists and beams under the porch and reassured us that the porch was stable and the house was well built. I wish we had done this job a long time ago because it's such a big difference to now be able to open the door and not worry that we were going to fall through the floor. MAck replaced the slats, painted the new slats and painted the front door and on a list minute request, painted the three columns that hold up the roof of the porch. It all looks amazing!!!! Also, Allison was so nice to work with and always very responsive and professional. We would definitely hire Mack again!
Description of Work: Repaired porch flooring, sanded/painted porch wood door and porch columns.
