I got two quotes on this job. Tom, the Rivercity salesman, was confident about his team's ability to get the job done. He also educated me on maintenance of the finished floor. He was very knowledgeable and that made the choice easy. The floor team - Mark was the main guy - was awesome. They were very knowledgeable about the type of wood the floor was and how it would react to stain. They were professional and worked hard (even on Thanksgiving). While they were confident they could do some of the rougher areas, they were also honest about what the result would look like. For example, in the kitchen, half the floor was new pine, and half the floor was existing. They were very straightforward that this might not match. The resulting job turned out very well, and one can barely notice the difference. Billing and invoicing were staightforward and professional. No surprises, which is always good. I would recommend Rivercity to anyone.
Description of Work: We had hardwood floors throughout the house. Some were painted and others previously had carpet on them. We also needed to have the treads refinished. Additionally, I ripped up some vinyl in the kitchen and uncovered wooden floors that were in pretty bad shape, (about half needed to be replaced). The job required sanding, staining and refinishing of all of this. Quite a tough one.

When they installed the floor there were wood chips left all over the basement floor, when they used the nail gun. But other then that everything was fine. The price was fair.

We have an older home with random width oak floors throughout with the exception of one larger room, which had 1/2 plywood. We wanted to match the existing floors and refinish an adjoining room. We attempted to get estimates from two companies prior to River City. One told me he could not do the job, and the other told me he would call with an estimate, but never called back or returned my calls. Tom from River City came out, took a good amount of time, and was very professional in detailing what the job would entail and what they could and could not do. They came in under budget, on time, and my floors are nearly perfectly matched. I was very pleased with both the install crew and the sanding/finishing crew, and the final product is great.
Description of Work: We needed to have approximately 300 feet of random width oak floors with pegs installed. We also needed to have the floors in an adjoining room completely refinished, and all floors stained to match the existing floors.

The work was completed perfectly and professionally. I stopped by the house frequently during the 4 days they were working to view the progress along the way, and when they say "dustless" they mean "dustless." I was there before they left on the day they did most of the sanding and there was not a spec of wood dust on any surface. There was some dust from the poly on the baseboards after the final coat, but it was minor and wiped right up. The finished product looks awesome. We're so happy with the floors, we're debating not even putting our area rugs back down. These are 60 year old oak floors that had been covered with carpet for years so they required a lot of work. The crew doing the job was extremely easy to get in touch with (they responded promptly to text messages, even in the evenings when I had small questions) and I thought they were very friendly and professional. I absolutely would bring the same crew back to do more work if needed. The price was right at the average of the other quotes we got, however, River City had the advantage of referrals from friends and a well known name in this area.

My biggest concern was the new floors would not seemlessly match the old floors. Overall they did a pretty good job and my biggest fear and concern was eased. They actually did a wonderful job of matching the floors. The finishing touches left something to be desired. I believe one crew came in and laid the hardwood another to sand and finish and yet another to put on the finisnhing touches. the shoe molding was not put on securely in all places and under the stairs it started to seperate. I purchased finishing nails and secured areas that needed to be secure. About a month or so after the job was complete an area in the kitchen began to buckle and I contacted River City Flooring to inform them of the problem. It took forever before they came out and fixed the problem. This after several phone calls and a threatening email. Again I think that overall they did a good job the service after the sale was not good at all. Honestly I'm on the fence as to whether or not I would hire them again.
Description of Work: Shortly after moving into our home we had water damage in our kitchen damaging our hardwood floors. We decided since we had to get the floors in the kitchen and surrounidng areas refinished we decided to pull up the carper in the great room and the stairs and have hardwoods put down. We decided to go with Rivercity flooring based off reviews on Angies list.

Description of Work: Suki and Juki presented to do the installation. They were on time, thorough, very pleasant and checked with me whenver there was any particular question about my preferences. They had two rooms to complete and did a fantastic and timely job taking care of business. They were very easy to work with and, once again, very thorough. Great team overall.

Called to set up an appointment. Was a little further out that I wanted so I asked if they could be here a little sooner. They were very quickly compliant and Mr. Erickson showed up a couple of days later. All went well. He was on time and did his job.
Description of Work: Had a bid provided by Kurt Erickson was thorough and all of the measurements were made as well. He brought several samples for me to look at and I actually chose one that he had brought that I had not expected to be the one I liked the best. It was a perfect and actually just a little bit less expensive than the original flooring I had chosen. Was impressed with is professionalism and timeliness. Great representative!

The work took a full week, Monday-Sunday, and then returning Tuesday to rehang the doors and finish a small bit of molding. Jerry was the salesman and did the measurements, and Richard's crew did the work. The only issue, however minor, was that we couldn't have the work started the day we wanted to, due to some scheduling/training or something. We were originally given the impression that a certain middle-of-the-week start date would work, but later were told we'd have to start the following Monday. It ended up working out. The crew was always working any time we stopped by to get the mail or see the progress, even Sunday morning of Labor Day week. The finished product is AWESOME! Would/will definitely use them again, and the dust system really worked. We didn't have to spend a whole day wiping the house down. I changed the furnace filter and there really wasn't much dust in it.
Description of Work: Refinished 827 square feet of pre-finished hardwood, removed/replaced all shoe molding, removed toilet; included materials cost, dust containment system. All work done on first floor, included kitchen, living room, dining room, and two hallway sections; also, the 1/2 bath and stairway landing to the basement.

Bid 3 businesses. Rivercity Flooring bid was in line with others. Worked with Kurt from the bid through completion of project. He did a great job of ensuring customer satisfaction. Linoleum removal and ceramic tile installation was first project. Worker came on time, was very courteous and concerned over satisfactory work. Completed installation on time and did a great job. Installer was very careful to leave work areas clean throughout the process. Carpet removal and hardwood installation next. 1 set of workers put down the hardwood and one stained and finished. Both groups were excellent to work with. Made sure we were happy with stain match. Trim molding and other finish work turned out great. Limited dust and construction debris throughout the entire job. Overall a very satisfactory experience.
Description of Work: Great room carpet removal. Removal of linoleum in laundry room, closet and entry from garage. Installation of hardwood in great room to match existing hardwood. Ceramic tile installation in laundry room.

Kurt was very punctual and knowledgable when he came out to quote us on our floors. We then went to his showroom to choose a new stain color. We were going from a natural oak with a high gloss shine (think basketball court) to a very dark stain with a satin finish. We chose a very dark finish on a different type of wood in his showroom, but he assured us that they could get very close to what we chose as our finished product. Work began on the day we closed on our new house. We delayed moving in for a week (even though Kurt promised the job would only take 4 days), to allow time for the floors to dry completely, and for carpet cleaners and home cleaners to come in behind River City and get the house ready for move in day. Billy, our installer, put down test sample stains at the end of day one for us to view. When we came into the house, we were very upset to see that the floors were nowhere near as dark and saturated as the sample we selected in the showroom (he had the large sample there at the house with him to compare). We complained that it was not dark enough, and he promised to try to get a closer match. This went back and forth over several days. We lived over an hour away from our new house, so it was a big trip to keep going back to see the floors. I even went to a Porter Paint store at Billy's request, to try to get a custom stain mixed to match. When I got back and left the sample for Billy, he said that the store had left too much stain on the sample, and that what they gave me would not be able to be matched on the floor. He then emailed me pictures of test samples on our floors, to avoid my having to drive over again and again. During this time, the installers trailer that held the dust containment system overheated twice, causing delays in the project. Between that and the stain issues, the project went over by a full day (into a weekend), causing us to have to scramble and back up the carpet and home cleaners already lined up behind River City. In the end, the floors ended up looking "ok". There is some streaking and some uneven-ness in the sanding, and one small area under the sink that was missed completely. Not the color we chose, but we are adjusting to the color we have. Kurt (our salesman) called several times as the project unraveled to try to move things along. He said that if the installer had any doubts that he could match our color, he should have been test mixing stain before he even started the project. We agreed, but were upset that the best the company was willing to do was throw their own employee "under the bus". Never did he offer to come out and look at the floors, or meet us in person to see if he agreed with us that the color was not right. Never did he offer us a discount of any sort for our trouble. He simply kept wanting to know if it was ok, so they could invoice us the remaining balance on the project. (And when your furniture is being delivered or else you will be homeless, you don't really have much choice but to say ok and accept it.) The floors look nice, but all the extra headaches would make us question using River City again.
Description of Work: Refinished 1100 sq ft of white oak hard wood flooring. Removed the factory finish, sanded down, stained, and resealed. Replaced metal flooring grates with inlaid wood to match the rest of the floors. Replaced all quarter round moulding with new moulding (and painted it).

ok. System was explained to us as dust-free but that is not the case- there was dust everywhere what they don't tell you is that they also use a hand sander near the walls that is not dust free and that made a mess all over my kitchen appliances and everything had to be wiped down anyway. maybe they should say that it reduces dust but certainly not dust- free. We also had a problem with the poly topcoat bubbling and they had to come back in and resand and put a new top coat on. Glad they admitted the problem and fixed it but we had to leave the house again for several days while the floor was recoated.

Response from River City Flooring Inc
Hello Member, I just wanted to thank you for the review that you listed here on Angie's List. It shows the work was done in Sept 07' which was 4 yrs and 8 months ago and we have made numerous changes since 2007. Just a reminder, we credited your account $500 for your inconvenience. Here are a few changes made over the past 4 yrs 8 months.. 1. We have added 12 more people to our staff to handle our growth. We now complete over 500 jobs per year. 2. March 2008: Opened a hardwood flooring showroom that includes "Sanded Hardwood Floors and "Prefinished Hardwood Floors". Our showroom is located at 3264 Ruckriegel Pkwy. 502-261-8233 3. In July 2009, our website traffic reached the highest level at 500 hits per month and we are now #1 on Google and Yahoo for refinishing floors. 4. In July 2010, we expanded our services to include carpet and ceramic tile. We have experienced crews and this part of our business is growing better than expected. 5. Hired an experienced Office Manager. 6. Hired an experienced Sales Manager 7. We have implemented quality control procedures that have improved the customer's experience. 8. Updated new equipment to decrease the amount of dust during sanding. 9. We have added a printed "What to expect" handout that explains to our customer the sanding process. 10. We are in the process of certifying every team member through Bona's certification classes by the end of 2012. Over the past 5 yrs our business has evolved from "new construction" to "existing homes". During this transformation we had some jobs that did not go as planned and we did correct them to our customers satisfaction. We have never ran from our responsibilities and have been very open and cooperative. We have great people working for us that care about their jobs and the work that they produce. We all have families and children in school and we all participate in our community. I'm very proud to be the Founder/President of Rivercity Flooring Inc. I'm also very proud of our employees that have worked hard to overcome this unstable economy. I know we always have room for improvement and I welcome all comments on Angie's List. Thank you, Chris Brumley Founder/President

I contacted RCF to get an estimate.I was contacted by Billy he came out and estimated the job and told us what to expect. We scheduled the job while we were out of town and were told the process would take 4-5 days. They started on 11-12 and were putting the final coat of poly on on 11-21. We arived home on the 22nd and the house was a disaster. I could not believe the mess.Dust everywhere, stain all over the base board and stair risers, stain and poly on the carpet that butted up to the wood floor, and the quality of the finish was not very good.I left a mesage on Billy's voice mail that night requesting he call me first thing on the 23rd to meet at the job. At 9:30 the 23rd I had not heard from him so I called the office and asked that they have him give me a call.He did return my call but did not have time to meet at the house, instead he had Richard the tech meet me at the house.I went over the issues with him and he agreed tha the dust was excessice, the finish was poor and that some stain was to be expected on the wood work(this was more than some). What really sent me over the edge was the stain and poly on the carpet. I specifically asked Billy, when he was at the house doing the estimate, how they would protect the carpet. He told me that they would triple blue tape the edge,(didn't happen. He also told me that even though their system was virtually dust free the openings to the rest of the house would be taped off with plastic,(didn't happen). On the paid invoice that I received from RCF it reads"We will tape off all openings and cabinetry prior to start"(didn't happen). Per the job discription the shoe molding was not going to be removed,Richard called one evening early in the job to let me know that if the shoe molding comes up easy he would be pulling it up, I told him that would be okay just leave it off and I would reinstall once I painted the baseboard in the kitchen. At the time I didn't know that the base board in the entry, dinning room, bathroom, laundry room, and all stair risers would also need to be painted. They were also supposed to sand around the toilet in the bathroom,he decided to remove the toilet, which I don't have a problem with, but when he reinstalled the unit he could not get the solid supply line hooked up with out leaking so now I have a braided supply line.Richard did end up sanding and applying another coat of poly to the floor, they do look better but the sanding around the door jams and base is very uneven. He did pull the carpet, stretch and reinstall removing the stain and poly,it looks okay.I had to fill gouges in the base board and risers before painting all rooms and I have spent countless hours cleaning up the mess. I did send Chris at RCF an email similar to what is typed above, he did call and left a message on my voice mail and said he was on his way to a meeting. He said that my email would be discussed the next day at a company meeting and he would be back in contact with me. I never heard from him.

River City has pleased me thus far but I have not chosen them for the project since I have not decided who I will chose.. I am impressed with what has gone on thus far. They were punctual, professional, and they provided additional information to guide us through the process. They have been responsive thus far and have been able to provide us with complex parts to the quote. We went to their shop a month ago and the office manager was able to provide a helpful step-through guide on the process. We did not get the email quote as quickly as I thought but once I alerted it to them they sent it to me the next day.
Description of Work: River City provided a quote for me. The quote has to deal with different rooms and different floors. The biggest room is the main room and dining room and it will be hardwood flooring.

Tom, the person responsible for performing the work was a very competant and conscientious young man. He did an excellent job, was always on time, and very courtious. When the job was fininshed the house was in move-in condition. There was an extremely small amount of dust on the vertical surfaces. It was such a small amount that one swipe with a swiffer duster took care of it.
Description of Work: My house was built in 1957. Upon removing the carpet, I found that the entire house had oak hardwood flooring. I contacted several wood floor refinishing companies on Angies list. I selected River City for two reasons. First, the great ratings on Angies list, and second, they were the only contractor that I found that had an outside trailer that collected the dust from the sanding.

Had River City flooring return to install wood floor for my kitchen renovation. The finished result is good, but I did not enjoy this experience as much as the previous work performed refinishing floors elsewhere in the house. We were trying to match, as closely as possible, the kitchen floor with the floors in the dining room and foyer. Chris suggested running the floor opposite...great idea...made the room look larger and didn't cause such an obvious difference. He also performed a test of the old wood to see if it was red or white oak. The test was inconclusive. He was going to have a piece of each stained to see what the closest match would be. This never happened. The wood for the floor was delivered and placed in my garage. This caused a problem for the installers, but they graciously offered to install on Sunday, which kept everything on schedule. The floor was stained. It was obvious that the color was not quite right. I knew it would not be exact and it is a lighter shade of basically the old color. Also, the oak cut on the new floor is much more grainy than on the old floor. I knew that was going to be an issue also, but didn't know it was going to be that obvious. I didn't really notice until the floor was stained. There are some boards that look very much like the old floor. The installers might have put those boards closer to the entrances to the other rooms so the blend would be better. The crew who stained and poly"ied" the floor were good guys. They did a good job, although one of their vehicles leaked oil all over my driveway several times. We are hoping that cat litter takes care of that.issue. Chris is a great guy and his crew are good to have around. If you are looking for a little bit more attention to detail, maybe you need to shop around..

Chris is very personable. He showed up when he promised. His staff was punctual and professional. They tore up the old floor, cleaned up after themselves every day, made suggestions on how we could improve the evenness of our sub floor (and offered to help do it), installed the new hardwood, stained it and sealed it. They told us exactly what to expect ( as far as smell and dust). There were no surprises and the floor looks beautiful. Chris even made recommendations on how to schedule the floor around the other construction. They use a dust free system that kept the rest of the house pretty clear of dust! Matches the existing floors perfectly!
