It went and continues to go very badly. Up until a year ago, I would have recommended General Heating and Air Conditioning without reservation, but things have gone downhill very rapidly since then. They installed our central heat about 12 years ago, including vents and ductwork and were very professional, efficient and clean. They have inspected our heater and changed the filters every year. About a year ago, at the inspection, the fellow who came did not have the right size filter (why? I don't know - they installed the heater) and so bent up a filter to fit. It did not work - no surprise. I had to go out and buy a new filter, so it would work. Last December, we decided to install air conditioning. Philip, the VP, persuaded me to do it soon, as the prices would rise after January 1, and told me there was no point in getting the high SEER ratings. What he failed to tell me is that the higher SEER ratings are eligible for a rebate from the city and would end up costing me less, he is in the air conditioning business, he should know. But let that go. On installation, they did a slapdash job and the installation did not pass inspection. The "excuse" for not passing was that some inspectors don't check those things. Yet, it is in the uniform building code and their obligation is to do it. After installation, it was very hard to get anyone on the phone (and continues to be), but eventually they came and fixed those things, so we passed. There was an issue with a duct inspection that Philip repeatedly gave us incorrect information about, but we finally got that straightened out, too. Then, a few months later we discovered rodents in the attic. Why? Because General Heating did not seal up the holes they made in the wall and the rodents could get in (verified by the pest control company). Now, we go to turn on the air conditioning today and it worked weakly for a few minutes, then cut off. They can't do anything about it until 3 days from now and surmise a fuse, which does not explain why it worked weakly. If I could have the entire thing uninstalled and get all my money back (including for the duct inspection and pest control), I would.

IN REGARDS TO THE REBATE THIS WAS A CITY UTILITY REBATE THAT REQUIRED 14 SEER. EACH UTILITY HAS THEIR OWN REBATE PROGRAMS THAT CHANGE MONTHLY YEARLY DEPENDING ON FUNDS. THIS CUSTOMER HAD BUYER'S REMORSE WHEN CITY OFFERED REBATE AFTER THE INSTALLATION. PRICES IN OUR INDUSTRY HAVE INCREASE YEARLY AND MULTIPLE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, DUE TO TECHNOLOGY, ENERGY REQUIREMENTS, COSTS OF GOODS. WE PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT WE FEEL IS IMPERATIVE TO A CONSUMER'S DECISION WE DO NOT USE STRONG HOLD SALES TACTICS. AIR DUCT TESTING IS A STATE REQUIREMENT BASED ON CITY INSPECTORS TO ENFORCE. I received a call from the technician on time. However, he stated he was the same technician who installed the icemaker. I requested another technician and was told it would be the following week before that could happen. I then called the central GE repair number and was told the same thing. I made it clear that I was unable to be at home next week. They offered absolutely no resolution.
Description of Work: GE appliance service installed a new icemaker in my refrigerator approximately one year ago. The icemaker has started leaking into the freezer causing ice to build up. I called GE to fix the leak. I made an appointment and asked that a different technician than the prior installer do the work needed.

Company set up an appointment and confirmed it via e-mail. Repairman came on time and had the forethought to bring replacement parts with him. He quickly diagnosed the problems and fixed the unit.
Description of Work: Fixed through-the-wall heat pump that supplies heat and air conditioning in a large room. None of the HVAC companies I contacted were familiar with the unit, so I called GE, the manufacturer. The unit had not worked following a power surge. Repair was performed on January 31, 2008.

GE repairman examined dryer that was making a loud noise. He advised that bearings were out plus one-half of heater element was out. He further advised that cost to repair would exceed $250. Because dryer was nearly 13 years old, he recommended that we not repair the unit but instead put the money into a new machine. I appreciate his candor and honesty.

GE knows they have a problem. I bought the top of the line washer, dryer and pedestals (expensive) advertised with vibration control. If there is no problem, then why are servicemen told to suggest removing the pedestals, putting plywood underneath, or moving it to a concrete floor. All absurd and ineffective. They offer this online purchasing to builders and consumers but no recourse. A local store would stand behind this kind of problem. I tried to return this set and get top-loading though that is not what I want. I wanted the water savings. They would do nothing. I pushed. I got an offer on the washer only that amounted to paying for a new top loader, losing most of my money on this one and the pedestal and having completely mismatched appliances. No store would do that! I can't use the washer because it's going to destroy my house. I should not have to settle for a less efficient and mis-matched set and lose money. I cannot do laundry in my new home.
Description of Work: I built a new house and ordered the appliances for it online. The appliances were installed last month when we moved in. The first time we used the front-loading washer, my son thought we were experiencing an earthquake. GE was called to my home and confirmed that the washer is installed per instructions and level in all respects. The official determination, once seeing the washer shake the house, is that it is "operating as designed." If the serviceman submits that (and they must), GE does nothing. The servicemen (2) both told me off the record that it is the design that is the problem; they see it all the time and have discussed it with the engineers. The washer shakes with such incredible force that it moves the entire first floor of the house -- so badly that it breaks things in cabinets and furniture moves. My builder has told me not to operate it because it will damage the floor joists and walls. GE tried a myriad of excuses and even suggested I move it to the garage!

I bought the GE dishwasher from a local appliance store, after installation it ran the first cycle and then this black oily gunk started coming out into the tub of the dishwasher. I contacted the store I bought the dishwasher from and come to find out they don't back up the products they sell and advised me to call GE. After many times of them coming out to repair the dishwasher, it still does not work. I have had numerous repairmen come out and tell me that I should be doing such things as running sink water till it was really hot and then start the dishwasher, clean the inside by running a few cycles with some type of cleaning agent, test our water, and we are about fed up. There are other times when repairmen wouldn t even come out when they said they would from GE. They refuse to replace the dishwasher that never worked. Update as of 2/11/08: 4 months after I first contacted them about the problem, they finally did replace a dishwasher that works.

Very well. I made the appointment on-line a week earlier. We received a confirmation phone call the night before service. We were given an 8 hour window for the technician to arrive. He called before coming (requested on-line) 3 hours into the window and was here shortly after. The technician brought material to cover the stove and counter while he worked so as not to cause any damage. He was very fast and efficient and finished within about 1/2 hour. The microwave is still under warranty so the part was covered and we only payed for service and labor.
Description of Work: The magnetron for our microwave was replaced.

I live in a condo association with three hundred and fifty other residents. We all use GE to do our appliance repairs because the building is outfitted with GE appliances and our building has a contract with this company. We individually pay for them to do the repairs on our appliances when needed. Overall, I would give this company average marks I guess. I can't say I was impressed with the fact they left marks on my dishwasher itself and debris was left all over my kitchen. I mean, this is the type of service that I can schedule an appointment on line. They then generate that service request on line. I do not have to be here while they are here to do the repair. I leave a key with my condo association. They leave me a receipt when they are done. I care to say I will continue to use them in the future because quite simply, they specialize in GE products, which I like.
Description of Work: Just the other day my dishwasher was repaired by this company. It was not draining water from the tub. This company replaced the pump.

Everything turned out to be fine. A frozen piece of steak somehow poked through the cage and was hitting the fan. It caused loud humming. The light had been out for two or three months. The serviceman located the light and found it was loose. They were very honest.

We usually hire a local repairman for smaller jobs but we now feel that for bigger jobs you must call the manufacturer. GE Consumer Services was top notch from the beginning. The actual time to fix my oven was around five minutes as all the tech needed to do was to clear the vent that was obstructed by dirt and reset the sensor which is something our local repairman failed to do.
Description of Work: Our built-in wall unit convection oven would not self clean and its internal sensor was incorrectly triggering the overheating protection. We had GE take a look at it for us.

They did wonderful because they did fix it. However, it took three weeks for them to get the parts. It was still under warranty, so I did not have to pay. Even though I did not pay, I still went without a dryer for a month. It's not like they give you quarters to go to the Laundromat. When you have four kids that is a big deal. Their call center asked me to fax a proof of purchase to them so I did. I called them back when they didn t call me and told the manager to go look for that fax while I was on the phone. He did and all was settled finally.

I am not sure if they had contracted someone else or not, but this is who I called. When he came out, it was very hard to get the old clock out. He did fix it though. You can now tell what time it is and you can clean the oven. The only thing you cannot do is turn the clock to be a timer. They were very knowledgeable and all the parts they needed were right in his truck. It is a wall oven so that is what made it so difficult.
Description of Work: My oven clock was old and had stopped working. I could not use the self cleaning part without the clock, so I hired General Electric to come fix it.

Well, GE was good about solving my problems so even though I bought stuff that had some issues apparently, they were great about fixing whatever it as that was going on. I also liked the fact I paid them no additional money because I should not have had to in the first place. I think only good things about them.
Description of Work: My washer and dryer were both repaired by this company. Both units were not functioning properly after I had purchased them because of a connection problem. GE resolved the problem when they came here. I think they put in some new wires. I didn't pay a thing because I had just bought the two GE unites brand new and it was covered in my contract with them.

He was really nice and only charged me a service call. I was very pleased that he didn't just try to rip me off and get the part. He was professional and very knowledgeable. With such a big chain I didn't expect such a good service but they were great.
