My home is on a hill. We have an (unused) inground swimming pool. If any work was to be done in the back yard, it would have to be done by hand. There's just no way to get heavy equipment or even a pick-up truck into the yard without possibly crushing the web of drains and pipes and lines scattered beneath the pool's surrounding concrete walkway or what little swath of level yard we have back there. Saturday morning, one of Robert's people, Steve, called at 7:55am - he was in our driveway and wanted to let us know he was on the job. He dug down, found the line beyond the broken section was plugged, but above the break (towards the house) was clear. Before long, Steve was hip deep in questionable fluids (hey I'm trying to be diplomatic here!), and discovered that yes, indeed we DO have a clean out! Too bad it was located in our neighbor's yard. Truth be told, it was on our property but the (ehem) gentleman who built our subdivision was of the mind in the late 60s that a simple wave of his arm dictated where the property lines were, and well, that's where the surveyor pins went. ANYway, after getting approval from our neighbor to dig on their side of our fence to find the next section of old, original clay tile pipe that wasn't broken, Steve ended up digging at least another few hours. By hand. In a swamp. With big mosquitos. He made a supplies list and left. A few hours later, he's back at it - running the electric eel on both sides of the break. The hunks of broken clay tile that the original builders laid, patched with concrete and covered with shingles that Steve unearthed were MASSIVE. Once he found a good section (ie: not broken) of clay pipe in the middle of our neighbor's yard, he hit a stopping point. It would need more pipe and fittings to connect different size and makes of pipe - but he was leaving us with a clear running water sewer until the specialty pipe shops opened on Monday. Monday morning, Steve called again from the driveway, ready to finish the job. He put a clean out in our yard (I'm thinking of painting it and giving it a good Appalachian double name, something like Bobby Steve... "Now, [dog name], don't you go out there and pee on Bobby Steve!"), filled in both the neighbor's side of the repair and ours and buttoned everything up. He was finished by noon! We couldn't be more pleased with the work, professionalism and genuine care Smith and Sons (and crew) showed us in what was truly a nasty and embarrassing, yet human, situation. I've told everyone who asks about the true gem we came across thanks to Angie's List.
Description of Work: Robert Smith took my call in the middle of the afternoon Thursday, August 8. I explained the situation with the sewer having developed a leak, uncertain if it was ours or our neighbors. He said he would be there the next day. And he was! Right then I decided he was the one for the job, as everyone else we've called for estimates kept putting us off. Robert dug around a bit more than 'a bit', determined the issue and made a plan. He gave me an estimate and it was on.

This crisis happened when I was out-of-town, and my family had to deal with a toilet tank that kept over-filling and then draining to the bowl. Water was everywhere, and no one at home could stop the flood. I made calls to plumbers while the family cleaned up the water as best they could. Steve arrived and got the tank fill system working properly, and he made sure the drain was clear and free-flowing. This wasn't an exotic repair, but the work as done QUICKLY and CORRECTLY. The cost of service is estimated -- I'm guessing 1-1/2 times a one hour minimum. Rob Smith will send me a bill. Thank you, Steve and Rob!
Description of Work: Smith & Sons Plumbing quickly responded to my plumbing emergency - after hours & within 30 minutes of my call! Rob Smith phoned ahead to say Steve was at the house ready clear the blockage.

Mr. Smith and a helper worked for several hours to open up the sewer. It wasn't easy but they finally succeeded.. They could have given up and said I needed a new drain which would have cost several thousand dollars, but they kept at it.

Robert Smith replaced a collapsed sewer line and repaired a leaking indoor tolliet. He was on time at every stage of the project - evaluation, bid, work. He was clear and proactive in explaining what would occur at each stage of the project as well as patient and expansive in answering all questions we had. He and his crew we're polite and we're careful to make sure the work area was kept clean and orderly as possible at the end of each work day. We could not have been more pleased with the service he provided and we're totally satisfied with the quality of the work!

Excellent service and sooner than expected. First was told that someone would not get out until later that evening. About an hour and a half later, I was told someone was on their way. In addition to fixing the leak. I also asked if they could give us a heating and air estimate as our system was 20 years old and we were shopping for another unit. We had a split system and had the downstairs replaced a couple years earlier. He said Doug, the guy coming out could give us an estimate. He fixed our leak upstairs and proceeded to give us an estimate which seemed very fair. We couldn't locate the man who installed our downstairs unit, but Doug knew him and said he'd retired and moved away. Doug also installed our new upstairs heating and air unit in one day and we were very pleased with his work and professionalism. This company is top notch. Mr. Smith even called to make sure that everything went ok for us and if the job was done to our expectations. You just don't get service like that anymore!

First off, Robert Smith and his workers were always polite and respectful. He completely redid all our plumbing. He also gutted our bathroom replacing everything (tub, toilet, lavatory, fixture and the floor). He consulted with us every step of the way as to what we wanted to go into the new bathroom. We chose a full size shower instead of the tub, a slightly higher toilet to help us get up and down. He installed an exhaust fan to keep the moisture down. He accepted changes that we proposed like going with sliding doors instead of shower curtain. He suggested items to us (like the shower head)and asked us what our styles was like for fixtures and moldings. We are extremely happy with our new bathroom and would definitely use him again. He installed a new granite sink and new faucet. He also installed some braces in our basement to help a structural problem that we had. He replaced all our old plumbing lines. He then insulated them without charging us. The only thing that was a bit of a problem was he did a portion of the work after 4pm. Overall, a great experience during a trying time. His work is impeccable and he wants to do a job you will be satisfied with (and that's hard to find in this day and age).

It was a very exceptional experience. We have had a difficult time finding someone to actually follow through when they say they are going to take care of the issue. We are extremely satisfied.
Description of Work: I called Mr. Smith late this morning to see if he could look at my disposal which wasn't working and the sink that backed up every time I ran the dishwasher. He said he would be here at around 3"30, asked for a number so he could call in the event of a delay or change of plans. He not only called to say he would be slightly delayed, but called to let us know he was on his way. He arrived promptly and found a screw in the disposal. He corrected this, explained the drainage of water in a disposal so we could understand and stayed to run the dishwasher to be sure it was fixed. Very pleasant and informative. I will use him again as needed and highly recommend him.

Robert Smith called about an hour before arriving to make sure he had the correct address. Once arriving he started on the bathroom while a helper started on the kitchen. The old items replaced had been there for over 20 years so the replacement of the items was not an easy task. Once completed they cleaned up the sink and tub area. Installing the cutoff valves required cutting the drywall and he made sure I was aware of this before starting. I had other drywall repair work that needed to be done so I was fine with that. Robert also gave me the name of someone who does drywall which I did use to for the drywall repair. Robert and his helper were very professional.
Description of Work: Installed new kitchen faucet, bathtub shower head, faucets, and spout. Also installed cutoff values to the master bathroom.

I highly recommend Smith & Son Plumbung, and here's why: During the holidays, we unexpectedly incurred a plumbing disaster, and turned to Angie's List to locate a highly rated professional that could get the job done right the first time. The week after Christmas we noticed a smell in the basement, and discovered the sewer was backing up through our washer drain. Based on the recommendations of Angel's List, we called Robert Smith & Son Plumbing. It turns out, the number listed here was Robert's cell phone, and he personally answered the call. He explained that he was taking a few days off over the holidays to spend time with his family at the bequest of his wife...like many of us, Robert tends to work long hours, often 7 days a week. He explained that he could set up a time to take a look at it next week, but asked that I explained the problem I was having. Although Robert was on vaction, he agreed to come help me with my disaster if he could get in before the crack of dawn (that way he could be back home before his wife and kids were up and no one would be the wiser). Within 24 hours, Robert was at my house working on my problem. It ended up taking almost 8 hours, and 3 increasingly longer snaking machines to get my sewer line unclogged. Many a men would have given up and gone back on vacation, but Robert stuck with it until the issue was resolved. I've been blessed with a wife and two daughters that have a constant stream of teenage slumber parties, which turned out to be the source of my problem. Robert took the time to show me the damage caused by years of feminine products being flushed down the comode, and the miracle it took to get them all out without having to dig up the yard (which would have cost thousands of dollars). He also took the time to inspect the plumbing throughout the entire house and pointed out potential problems down the road, and provided alternatives to addressing each issue. To top it off, Robert cleaned up all the mess and disinfected the basement. I highly recommend Smith & Sons Plumbing. Robert is very thorough, professional, dependable, and highly qualified. On top of that, he has a good heart and put the needs of this customer ahead of his own.

Called and left message about getting an ice maker connected. He called back that same day and setup appointment to do work. I live in another state and own a house in KY that my granddaughter is living in. She called and said she had a water leak on Monday, and we had a friend that was supposed to do the repairs. When this did not happen, I decided the check on Angie's List since I am not living in the area. I found Smith & Son's, called and he came out that afternoon and fixed the problem. Planning to use Mr. Smith for another plumbiing issue in the house w/in the next two weeks

We are still working on all of the other repairs needed, such as floor joints, walls ,subfloors, insulation and so on. We hope to use him in the next couple of weeks so we can get our home back to normal some what. Update on work performed: It has been some time since we last saw Mr. Smith, but he did do some work for our bath and kitchen. The work he done was fair but before we had even finished installing the floor joyces in the bath we had to take out part of his work due to a different plumbing problem and upgrade some of the main drain pipes. Mr. Smith put in half of the plumbing and said he would call back and check in with us when we got more of the bathroom tiling done on the walls. This was to see when he could return to finish up the rest of the job. We NEVER heard another word from him, and my Mom got her plumber from WVA. to come over and finish the rest of the job plus the upgrades. He did put in new pex lines for both hot and cold water, before he left, but he didn't put in any extra line in case we ever had to move them to make any repairs. Also, I wasn't pleased when he didn't let us know ahead of time that he wouldn't be coming to do any work until it was time for him to show up and we lost precious days and we were on a time frame to get them both done before the holidays rolled in. Well, we finally completed our bath and kitchen, 17 mos. later, bu t that was due to other issues with the construction of both rooms. I am sure on a small job he would be alright, but on a big job like we had to do, I think he got a little overwhelmed.
Description of Work: Mr. Smith was quick to return our call and he was there at our home at the agreed time to give us an estimate and an overall idea of what we would be looking at as far as expences and the amount of work involved. We have a HUGE open hole in our kitchen and now our only bathroom is out of use due to a major water leak and both floors needing to be completely taken out down to the foundation. My husband spoke to Mr. Smith and he gave us a reasonable price for what we will need done and has agreed to also install a new tankless hot water heater for us. We haven't use Mr. Smith's services yet, but he has been in contact with us a couple of times to see how far we have progressed with the other work being done. We are looking forward to working with him and I will keep everyone informed as to how this venture goes along. He also appears to be very knowledgable about his work and the codes required for all of the installs.

I'm Sorry To say this but I believe you are recalling some things wrong! When I left you told me that you would call me when you had the rest of the framing done! You never called me to finish the plumbing. I did all of the rough in on the job and as I recall you still owe me $450.00. So I'm very surprised that you would get on here and post this type of review! My guess is you found someone to finish it out cheaper and just didn't want to call and tell me! Thank you for the review and I'm sorry that we had this mix up!

This business is a revelation. I have never been treated more courteously and respectfully. They could not have been more fair.I measure a professional service provider in part by what he tells me when he doesn't have to, meaning when he must know he has an advantage of knowledge and could get by with less.Robert pointed out a small flaw in the materials that turned up after a day's work (and that I would not likely have noticed for some time if at all) and did a full day's work over at no expense to me. He was uniformly punctual with appointment times. His crew began work when promised, and worked well after normal hours. He went out of his way to explain everything he was doing and why, and even invited me to watch things that I might be able to do for myself in the future. In the end, I did not just receive the finished product I was promised. I received better. My goal for the drain lines was simply the replacement of old corroded metal pipes. I now have not just replacements but a neater, better layout. The tub / shower and supply lines are now also more sensibly arranged than before.

These guys are absolutely amazing! We called them based on Angie's list ratings and were not disappointed. They showed up right on time to meet with us for an estimate. They were extremely fair on the bid. Our problem was that we had 2 basement bathrooms that hadn't been updated in the better part of 40 years. Toilets were leaking, the urinal was non-functioning, there was no hot water running to either bathroom, and they constantly smelled of sewer gas. Other plumbers wanted no part in the job, but Smith and Sons were willing to tackle it! They did all the work mentioned above while working around the schedule of our church and all the different events we had during that time. Each night after they were done working they cleaned up what little mess they made so that it wouldn't affect our church events negatively. When the hot water heater element went bad they replaced it immediately. When we got a 2nd "dud" for the heating component of this tankless heater they replaced it again--but this time at their own expense, charging us nothing extra. On top of that, we asked them to keep the existing toilets, which they did, but we also asked them to lower the urinal. The urinal had been secured the the wall in such a way that to lower it would have broken the urinal, so they asked if they could instead build a small platform for boys to stand upon. Not only did they build a great platform, but they bolted it into the ground so that it wouldn't move, and then laid linoleum over the top and calked around the sides. The water fountain they installed was amazing too! We only hired them to do the basic plumbing, but they went above and beyond in helping us. Our bathrooms were a nightmare before. Now we receive compliments each week about how the basement smells so much better and our children's department workers love how the kids can use the bathrooms easily now that Smith and Sons have finished. They have totally helped turn things around for us!
Description of Work: They partially remodeled two bathrooms in the basement of our church for our children's department 1. They ordered and installed 2 vanities and faucets that were more child-height friendly 2. They installed a tankless hot water heater and ran the electrical for us3. They fixed 3 existing toilets by replacing the "guts" and then calking around the toilets so that they work like new4. They installed a new water fountain, again lowering it to make it child-height friendly5. They put a new push valve flush handle on an old urinal that previously had no real flush valve6. They installed 2 vents in the bathroom that removed all traces of sewer gas odor7. When they were unable to lower the existing urinal without damaging it and having to replace it, they instead when above and beyond and built a small box for children to stand on8. They covered the box with linoleum that our church purchased separately, even though it wasn't part of the contract9. They ran all new water and sewer lines for the water fountain, new vanities, and toilets
