Did not use this company
Description of Work: We did not use this Company. They came out & gave us an estimate to refinish our existing hardwood floors & install hardwood floor in another room. Their estimate was far higher than company we went with. Would have considered using if price more competitive, lower. Tried to rate overall experience as N/A, but this review site wouldn't let me, it won't take NA so put same grade as price?

I don't understand the motivation to post a negative review a year after we gave a FREE estimate because we were not the low bid on her floor. I You can always find a bid lower than us. The value we bring is a 27 year old, family owned company that has a lifetime guarantee.

. My home is a 1918 bungalow in El Dorado. We had refinished the dining room years ago-- a neighbor did the sanding and I did the staining and polyurathaning. Since we wanted oak floors in the kitchen remodel to remain, I got two bids on my kitchen/half-bath/dining room oak flooring refinish. The sales process with Great American Hardwood floors was pleasant and very informative. I appreciated that the office staff, the salesman and the staff member performing the work were all knowledgeable and willing to educate me as to all the considerations of flooring refinishing options. I hoped to blend my work in the dining room with that in the kitchen; they were able to tell me why that was not possible, and gave me a great price to extend the work into the dining room. I also wanted to keep the floors looking as if they belonged originally in this 94-year old house, and he suggested that his approach would support it: fillers pop out, so nail holes and small imperfections of color would remain to add character. The other bidder was pretty sure of himself, and prescribed rather than suggested. He wanted to fill all holes after sanding; not my style. Great American's bid was precisely half of the other guy's. Well, it's been 8 months since the work was completed. the kitchen remodel (and a guest room!) have been completed. The floor is wonderful; the color is great, the finish is beautiful. I could not be happier than I am. Worth every penny!
Description of Work: Salesman discussed the process and the timing and presented a quotation good for a month. I called the office and we arranged a start date. Worker started on time and finished when promised. The work of sanding took a day - the rooms were taped off with plastic, very thorough. The cats were restricted to another floor. The next day, he let me mix stains, painting them on the floor side by side until I got a color I liked. He stained with a penetrating stain not normally available to homeowners unless you know about them! And followed up with a penetrating polyurethane, 2 coats. We had to use a plank bridge over the floor to get from the threshold to the first step of the stairwell to go to bed, and he left a nice plank so we could do that easily. Other than that, and the fact of the odor - it was January, and a bit too cold to leave the windows open more than a crack -- we were comfortable with the process.

Went well. Fix has held up and looks great. Satisfied with work.
Description of Work: We needed a laminate wood floor repair in front of our pantry. We had the option of removing many floor boards or just removing the damaged board and replacing it with another which would be held in place by glue. The larger repair meant we would pay $300, plus track down and purchase 2-3 additional boxes of laminate flooring due to risk of breakage during removal. We chose to replace the one board, which cost us $150. Seemed slightly high at first, but we don't possess the skills or tools to do the job, so it's a decent trade-off for us. The man who fixed the floor was very knowledgeable, courteous, and worked quickly. Floor looks great and holds up well under constant traffic.

They did a great job. Corina was very attentive to our needs. The stain we picked was a special Walnut and was exactly what we had in mind when we started to think about putting in the floors. Jeff's price was very competitive compared to other quotes we received.

We were extremely pleased. Jeff came a day after I called and gave me a bid, the work was started the very next day, and completed on schedule. The workers (Jeff and Dave) were there early each morning and did a fantastic job. Their dust control system worked fabulously and I would pay them again for a job like this in a heartbeat. They also did a beautiful job patching one spot on the floor. I paid exactly what the estimate called for.

They were able to steer around problems not of their own creation. The materials that the customer ordered came defective. They worked around these difficulties with kind diplomacy. The overall quality of their work and product was to my satisfaction.

Showroom was excellent we spent a bit of time before going there at other local hardwood flloring places so we had a good idea of what we wanted. They came and measured and gave us a great booklet on what we could expect from them in terms of delivery of service. They were the only vendor that had a brochure that walked us through the things we could expect as part of the process. People that did installation were great, friendly very prompt, I was actually amazed how quickly they were done, estimated 3-4 days took 2 1/2. Installation rate quoted was best by far in terms of per sq ft.

Went very well. I recieved many quotes from various companies and though GAF wasn't the cheapest, they were by far the most professional and seemed to know the most about floors. Some of the other companies' measurements of our floors were off by over 50 SF- a big price difference! All of my questions were answered and when I went to visit the house during the week they were working I was completely comfortable with the workmen we had given a key. Two things to point out: 1- when installing the section of new flooring, the workers scratched the wall a bit. They took the initative to go down into the basement and find the spackle and the matching paint we had and repair the error themselves. Very considerate! On the other end, they forgot to replace a backstop we had in one of the bedrooms and as a result, we now have a doorknob sized-and-shaped impression on the wall in the bedroom we will have to repair. Finally, we have an older house without high ceillings and chose NOT to pay for the extra dust evacuation system. This was a good choice for us and after a wipe down of the walls/floors/etc. we haven't had a single problem with dust seeping out in the weeks following the work as I know some others have. They were very clean and I saw several trashbags of sawdust leaving the house so it was nice to know they were still cleaning up afterthemselves even though we didn't pay for the optional extra-dust system. Overall, I would recommend GAF to any friend/family member/stranger.
Description of Work: We had GAF refinish the approximately 830 SF of wood floors in our house as well as install about 12 SF of flooring in an area which had been tiled but was surrounded by wood flooring. GAF sanded down all of the floors, patched in the new area (staggering the boards to help decrease the noticiability of the patch) and then stained, sealed and finished them. We were out of our house about a week.

Our 70-yr old floors needed to be refinished, including a good bit of repair in the DR. I received two estimates from local companies and chose this one because the competitor had a horrible review on Angie's List. However, in their estimate that company had included fixing an old furnace patch located in a prominent place in the living room. I got Great American's estimate first and didn't ask about the patch. However, I did get good general information about refinishing hardwood floors from Gr Am. The work took ~5 days, probably a day longer than expected because I asked for the cosmetic patching (which as I mentioned above, cost 2.5 times more than competitor's quote). The parts of the floor done well look great. But a few holes popped up near the end of the buffing process--likely from old termite damage, but I wondered why the boards weren't replaced at that time. I was told that the filler used "might fall out" and was given a jar of filler to fix it myself in case it does. Then after waiting for everything to dry and moving the furniture back in, I noticed a damaged board in the closet was not repaired. After several phone calls and reassurances, a month later I'm still waiting for it to be repaired...

Response from Great American Flooring
The termite damage was not visible when we did the original estimate. Termites eat from the bottom up. Often there are places where they have not quite broken through the surface, so the damage is not visible. When you sand the floor, this is when you discover the damage. The statement about the furnace patch being so high is very misleading. The patching estimate included patching all of the termite damage that was discovered after sanding. The statement that she made several phone calls and was still waiting on us is absolutely not true. Since we saw this post, we called her again and offered to fix the board in the closet and no extra cost, even though it was more termite damage that was discovered after we had priced the patching. We have done our best to fix a badly damaged floor at a fair price. We gave her a free jar of putty, in case any more small places of undiscovered damage break through. And yes, filler sometimes "might fall out". Ask any wood floor professional or the National Wood Flooring Association. Movement or expansion and contraction will cause this.
