They are on call 24 hours a day, weekends, and every single weekday. When you call them, they will come out and fix the problem. They are very thorough and very reasonable in their pricing. I would use them again.

All went very well. Felt a little like plumber was "pushing" personal environmentalism bias (and I'm definately NOT a tree-hugger).
Description of Work: I've used B. Franklin for several jobs, most recent was replacement of a water turn-off valve for a toilet fixture. They are dependable and do good work but are rather expensive in my opinion. Used because of difficulty in finding alternative that was available, etc. Since then have found a one-man operation I like, but would probablyl call B.F. for bigger or more urgent jobs.

It was a terrible experience. They installed the hot water heater directly in front of our furnace and we couldn't get in to change the filter to the furnace. We didn't realize it at the time of installation. They did send someone back out to look at it and they told it was our fault. They told us we would have to pay to have it fixed again. We didn't agree to that and they told us we should have spoke up when they were installing it. We were able to get the problem fixed ourselves, but it was very frustrating. We are happy with the hot water heater itself, but not the company. We would not use them again.

The person doing the installation was efficient and seemed to do a good job. However, after he left, we discovered that he had positioned the hot water heater in front of our furnace so we could not get the furnace filter out. We called and asked them to come back to see what they could do to fix it, and scheduled an appointment for several days in the future. No one from the company kept the appointment. The original employee came back again the day after the scheduled appointment and agreed that there was a problem getting the furnace filter out. He called his supervisor, who said the only thing they could do was move the water heater, but it would cost more than $300 in labor, which we would be expected to pay because it was our fault. He said we should have said something when the installation was happening. In the end, we did not have them move the water heater and my husband did it himself. The person in their office who scheduled the city inspection also did it incorrectly and set it up for a date in May rather than the March date they had agreed upon during the installation. I am incredibly disappointed with the whole experience, and would absolutely not recommend them.

Response from Ben Franklin Plumbing Wichita
The water heater that was leaking was a 40 gallon and the customer told us they wanted a 50 gallon installed to replace the 40 gallon. We installed the 50 gallon with the customer watching and at no time did they mention anything about the furnace filter barely coming out because of the size of the 40 gallon heater. Three days later they called and told us about the filter problem and at that time said the filter just skimmed by the old 40 gallon heater. Since a 50 gallon heater is larger in diameter, now there was a problem getting the furnace filter out. Knowing this in advance of the 50 gallon heater installation, you would think the customer would have said something to our plumber. We are plumbers and not heating and air conditioning technicians so it is not something you would necessarily assume a plumber would know. Had the customer mentioned all of this to us before changing out the heaters, there would have been an additional charge to move the furnace flue pipe, but no additional charge to move the water lines since that would be part of the installation. When our plumber returned to the jobsite to checkout the problem a few days later, he was able to get the filter out even with the larger heater. We do admit that the inspection problem was our fault. Our plumber apparently misunderstood our office staff when they were communicating about the inspection scheduling. We are sorry for this confusion. If in fact the customer physically moved the heater then another inspection would need to be performed and our installation warranty would be void since it has been altered since the original installation and inspection

I would use them again. They are on time, very courteous, they call before they come, they tell you exactly what it is going to cost to make the repair, they make it, they are quick, and efficient. I feel like I can trust their technicians. They always courteous and wear foot protectors so they don't bring dirt in and out of your house.

Called and asked to give a quote on the repair of a leaky shower drain. They were very punctual showing up on the same day of the call. They do charge $49 just to show up and this DOES NOT go towards the service if you choose to use them. The plumber looked at the drain and decided it needed to be completely changed which he initially quoted at over $300 (not including the $49). This seemed expensive especially considering he said it would take less than two hours. His response was they do not charge by the hour but by the category of the repair. We decided to go ahead and do it and he then stated because he will have to go through the garage ceiling to access the lower part of the drain it will be another $200-300 on top of the previous quote and show up fee. So we are now at a total price of over $600 for a drain repair which he stated would take less than 2 hours. At this point we chose to just pay the show up fee and decline the service. He then spent the next 20 minutes quizzing us in a very condescending way on plumbing trivia in an attempt to prove why we need to trust him and let him do the work as well as try to get us to purchase a maintenance plan. After he left a friend and I went to the hardware store purchased the supplies for less than $50 and were able to fix the drain in 2 hours with zero plumbing experience. To this day we have had no more leaking from the drain.

We just paid their service fee. I didn't like anything about them. They wanted to charge us an exorbitant amount of money where the part alone only cost $5 or $6. Their labor charge is just outrageous. I ended up fixing the problem myself for $10 and they wanted like $300 to fix it. I would not recommend them at all.

The pluming problem was low water pressure to kitchen sink faucet and dishwasher. We spent time diagnosing the problem which ended up being the supply shut off valves. We proposed to cut the ½” water line, install ½” tee and install 2 - quarter turn shut off valves and supply lines, one for the faucet and the other for the dishwasher. The total quoted this member for the job was $264. We would have laid down tarps to protect our work area, shut the water off, drained the system, installed the new shut off valves and supply tube, turned the water back on, flushed the entire system and checked the house water pressure. All work performed would have a 2 year parts and labor guarantee. Total cost for all parts would have been $35.68 for 1- 3/8” x ½” x 16” braided stainless steel supply for faucet, 1- 3/8” x 3/8” x 72" braided stainless steel dishwasher supply, 1- ½” pex tee, 5 - ½” copper pex rings, 2- quarter turn brass shut off valves. We would have been onsite for approx. 2 hours total to complete the job. If he is claiming that he fixed it himself then he didn't perform the same degree of work that we would have and didn’t use the same amount and quality of parts. He was charged our standard $49 dispatch fee. I can assure you that we do not make any money on a job where we only collect $49. It cost us much more than $49 to send a fully stocked truck, drug-free, criminally back ground checked plumber to someone’s house. Add to that that we are fully insured and bonded and have true 24/7 emergency service available 365 days a year!

They were very good. It seemed expensive to me, but then, I also know that it really was comparable to what other people might have priced it at. The one thing that I was not happy about was that I had signed a contract that they would come back the following year and check out all the plumbing throughout the house. They picked out a couple of things that they felt needed to be worked on. One was a water heater that he said needed to be replaced. I actually did have it replaced by someone else at a third of their price, and when they replaced it, they told me that it really just needed and incoming line part replaced for $5 rather than having the whole water heater replaced. So, I was not happy about that.
Description of Work: I have used Ben Franklin Plumbing for plumbing services. When I first moved into my present home, I had a leak in the pipe outside at the incoming line. They had to dig out to where it connected into the house and repair the connection.

I had a couple fairly simple plumbing jobs during my basement finish. Having not done them before, I thought it would be worth it to let a professional come do the work, and have some guarantee on it being up to code for my inspection, and having more security that I wouldn't be tearing out drywall to fix a leak after it was done.I did the non guaranteed service window option and the tech showed up within an hour. He was very polite, prompt, and efficient in answering my questions. He listened to my needs, and seemed very knowledgeable. After spending a few minutes putting a quote together, he described to me the "guaranteed pricing strategy".The fairly simple tasks (run a drain line, install a shower mixer, hook up a p trap) were apparently "level 5" pricing tasks. The quote was over $1800 for everything. He charged me $29 service fee (free estimate?) and left me with about $30 worth of marketing material on his way out the door after describing their membership program.I did the work myself (no plumbing expertise, minimal experience) in about 4 hours with a total material cost of around $50. How that was $1800 worth of work is beyond me.What frustrates me the most is that this company likely makes most of its money off of grossly overcharging customers that are either in an emergency and don't have time to find multiple quotes, are inexperienced and can't tell the quote is outrageous, or smart enough to know better but still get forced into paying a service call fee. I will not be calling these guys ever again, and I would suggest you do the same. AFTER SEEING RESPONSE FROM BEN FRANKLIN PLUMBING Kind of funny how you can list out a bunch of small steps and make it seem like a daunting task. Remember, part of the excessive margins this company uses goes to staff its 24/7 answering service and marketing/PR rep that had time to look up my quote from only my name (and provide details about it in a public forum) to respond on this website. I explained to the tech that I had all the necessary permits in hand from the city and even showed them to him. Assuming there was a cost for that would have been redundant. As for the $600 for the "massive" mixer valve install process (no permit required), the plumber I ended up hiring only charged me $80 and got the work done in less than 2 hours. He didn't shoot up any crack while he was here, but he did take a call from his wife asking what he needed from the grocery store while she was out. No leaks after 2 years, so I'd say he knew what he was doing.

Obviously what we were going to do and what the homeowner did are 2 different things. Below is an outline of the work we were going to do to complete the job as described to us by the homeowner. Job outline: Pull permit for Bar sink connection Cut 3" pvc waste stack Install 3x2 san tee and 3" no hub coupling Drill thru at least 3 studs to run 5' of 2" pvc waste with 1/4" fall per ft arm for bar sink Install 2" - 1/4 bend with 2" x 11/2" bushing Install Air admittance valve under sink Install continuous waste with trap adapter Tub and shower work Run 1/2" water lines from ceiling to tub and shower valve location Drill 3" hole thru fiberglass for new Tub/shower valve Drill 3/4" hole thru fiberglass wall for tub spout Drill 1/2" hole in wall for shower arm Install tub and shower valve with copper fittings and ball vales on water lines to isolate t/s valve if needed to shut water off Run water line for tub spout Run water to shower head Install wood backing for tub/shower valve body for supporting Strap water lines to framing for support and water lines knocking Install tub and shower valve trim/spout and head Caulk around escutcheon Connection to drain for tub Dig out dirt from around 2" drain Install 2" p-trap Install 2x1/12' bushing Run 11/2" riser with trap adapter Install solid brass waste and overflow Schedule inspection with central inspection We figured that the job was going to take about 8 hours to complete plus all work done in this situation requires pulling a permit with the City and having it inspected to insure that the work is done according to the Uniform Plumbing Code. This insures that the homeowner’s health and safety are protected when dealing with potable water and drainage, waste and vent issues. Plus the fact that all of our work carries a full 2 year parts and labor guarantee with 24/7 emergency service available 365 days a year. Combine this with the fact that we try and hire the best and most qualified, drug free with no criminal background plumbers available. These qualities alone eliminate about 90% of the plumbers who apply for employment with us! We also have full health and dental insurance for all employees, company matching IRA for all employees and paid vacations and holidays. We believe that our plumbers who protect the health and safety of the public deserve to be paid a respectable wage for the value of work they perform. They should make enough money to send their kids to school and have a retirement plan. We will be glad to share with anyone who wants to see our past years income statements and this year’s current income statement to show that we are not ripping off our customers in any way. If we were, our income statement would show it and if anyone who knows anything about running a business believes making a profit of 10% - 15% if outrageous, then they are sadly misinformed. We have found that most of our complaints come from people who have never owned their own business and don’t have a clue as to what it costs to run a business in today world. When all you have done is receive a paycheck each week, it is really hard to understand in full the risk involved in owning your own business.

Response from Ben Franklin Plumbing Wichita
According to our records, we have not worked for the member since April of 2008. She is stating that we did work for her around 3/17/2010 so we believe she must have us mixed up with another plumbing company. We are also very leery of reviews that appear years after the work was performed. If there was a problem, why wait for years to post a review. We show that we worked for her on 7/23/2003 – installed a 10 year warranty water heater for $407.07. That is definitely not expensive On 5/4/2007 we rebuilt a shower faucet, installed a new tub spout, replaced the overflow plug, replaced dishwasher shut off valve and also attempted to fix her master bath faucet at no charge. For all of this we spent over 2 ½ hours plus almost $50 in parts and the total charge was $317. Again, that doesn’t sound very expensive for all the work done. On 9/6/2007 we replaced the main water shut off valve to the entire house, did a complete rebuild on a toilet in upstairs bathroom. Total time on job was just over 1 ½ hours with $60 in parts and the total charge was $227.00. I believe to most people this would not seem expensive for the amount of time and material used on the job. On 4/21/2008 we unstopped a lavatory drain line, total time spent on the job was right at 1 hour and the charge was $126.00. Again that sounds rather inexpensive, not expensive. This is the entire work history for this lady. As I mentioned above, we believe she has us mixed up with another plumbing company since the last job we did for her was on 4/21/2008 and none of the jobs listed above other than the 10-year warranty water heater for $407.07 were done in her basement.

They are very, very reliable and good. We were very satisfied with them and have had them do 2 or 3 jobs for us. They were very prompt. They gave us a time of 8-12 and they were always here at 8 so we didn't have to wait until 12 so they were very punctual. They always cleaned up their mess so it was very hard to see that they had been here. They were right on their estimate price. They were very polite and explained everything to us. The actual plumbing work was done well and on time. The problem is they will hard sell you to have many other things done that may or may not be necessary. I had particular problems with their billing procedures and lack of documentation on their prices and discounts that were supposed to be provided as a member of their Ben Franklin Society. I had placed numerous calls to the manager and was told he would return my call, but never did. They won't tell you the prices until they are at your home and at that point it will cost you a service fee just to say no thanks. They will also push you to join their Ben Franklin Society which is supposed to provide discounted service, once again I had difficulty getting them to document this after I had work done as a member and it took me several phone calls to get it resolved. Once my society membership is expired I will not be renewing.

On October 8th, 2011 this client stated that the work was done well and on time and the problem is that we tried to hard sell him on many other things that may or may not be necessary. I’m guessing that the hard sell as he puts it is simply options that our plumbers give homeowners so they can make an educated decision on how to solve their plumbing problems. As with most plumbing problems, there is usually an option or 2 that invoice repairing the problem and generally there is an option to replace entirely the plumbing fixture that is causing the problem. Example: Customer’s problem is their toilet is not flushing correctly. Solution 1 could be replacing just the part that is causing the problem, solution 2 could be replacing all the parts in the entire toilet and solution 3 could be replacing the toilet completely with a brand new toilet. Our plumbers are trained to give customers all options that apply to the plumbing problem presented them. We believe that it’s not up to us to decide the solution, but the customer’s decision. In looking at the 3 invoices where we have worked for him on 3 different occasions, all 3 invoices have several options documented on them. He states that he had issues with our billing practice and discounts that are supposed to be provided to our Ben’s Society members. Again, in looking at the 3 invoices where we worked for him on 3 different occasions, all 3 invoices have several options documented on them in regard to price and the Ben’s Society discounts that were clearly marked. Being a Ben’s Society member saved him $156.00 on the 3 jobs we did for him. In regard to quoting prices over the phone for plumbing repairs, we generally will not because there are way to many variables involved in determining how much it is going to cost to solve a plumbing problem. First of all, our call takers are not going to know over the phone based on what a customer is telling them that, oh yes, to repair your toilet is going to involve 3 different options. Then going through all the options as an example of what I stated above in repairing a toilet. Secondly, our call takers are not plumbers so them being able to determine a price for a repair over the phone is just not feasible. Lastly, we record all calls into our office and we can find no record of him calling on numerous attempts to reach us and us not responding.

Do ask for estimated price before they arrive. I feel I had to pay for the entire job when the plumber himself told me my self-installation was all but done and I just ran short of getting to the point it would work out and be complete. Thus, he seemed to really take his time with completing it.
Description of Work: After toilet work was completed satisfactorily I asked for an explanation and estimate on another job. They were 30% higher than the plumber that i'm going to hire and the explanation and plans of my preferred plumber make more sense.

In response to her saying that she believes she had to pay for a complete toilet repair when she had already done part of what was needed. We charged her a total for the toilet repair of $117. Regardless of what she had done to the toilet, once we touch the toilet and make any degree of repairs, we are totally responsible for the entire repair. I can assure you that if what she had done would cause a problem a few months down the road, she would probably expect us to repair at no charge since we had just worked on the toilet. In my mind, $117 for a toilet repair does not seem to be very expensive when you figure that our repair has 2-year parts and labor warranty. In regard to the estimate that she says we were 30% higher than another plumber, we had figured that a total charge of $966, which included about $125 in parts and over 6 hours of labor, plus recording the job with the City and having it tested per the City code. My guess is that the plumber who is doing the work for 30% less is not doing all that is required by the City code in the way of registering and testing

First of all I would like to state the facts in this case as opposed to what has been written by Member. We originally went to her home on 11/8/10 at 8am. We checked out her kitchen sink faucet and discovered low water pressure due to calcium build up inside. We recommended replacing it and at that time and gave her a couple of options in regard to style of faucet, price and warranty of faucet. She chose the $398 option which included a new 2 handle chrome finish kitchen sink faucet with spray and burst proof stainless steel water supply lines plus all labor and taxes necessary to complete the job. All parts and labor would carry a 1-year warranty, which includes 24/7 emergency service 365 days a year. On 11/16/10 she called into the office to voice her concern over what she believed was us taking advantage of her because she is a single woman. At that time we refunded her $40 because she said our technician did not show her the exact price for the installation from our straight forward price book. They are trained to show everyone the exact price for every task before any work is started. That makes the price for the faucet installation to be $358 total. We were on the job for right at 2 hours. I can assure you that us sending out a technician in a $60,000 truck that has $15,000 worth of inventory on it and spending 2 hours labor to install a faucet that retails for $90 to $100, we are not getting rich. She then states in another separate complaint on 5/10/11 that we came out and did the same job again. We have no record of ever going back on this faucet at anytime other than when we originally installed in on 11/8/10. She also states that we refunded her $25. As stated above, we refunded her $40 because of our technician’s mistake. This is based on her telling us over the phone that he didn’t show her the price from our book. If we had returned on 5/10/11, there would have been no charge for anything because the faucet would have been in warranty.

I thought my furnace humidifier had gone berserk. All my windows were weeping, droplets were falling from the ceiling in several rooms. I called Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. They diagnosed a hot water line leak in the crawl space, but were unable to start work until Catastrophe Restoration Specialists spent 24+hours pumping the crawl space out. My insurance co, American Family, was extremely responsive and helpful. The CRS guys were great and the Benjamin Franklin plumbers were punctual and professional. I would recommend all three participants - American Family, Benjamin Franklin plumbers and Catastrophe Restoration Specialists. p.s. Benjamin Franklin had published a coupon in our local paper for a "free service call" if they did the repair. That was worth $49!
Description of Work: After the 2' of water had been pumped out my crawl space, the 2 plumbers replaced the hot water line that had sprung a leak.

I called after-hours on a Friday. I got a prompt response on the phone, very professional, told me exactly what to expect. Told me to expect an after-hours service charge of $99 for the evening or Saturday. There would not be an extra charge if service was extended on Monday. Since we needed it taken care of that evening, we went ahead and accepted. The plumber called about 45 minutes later, and showed up shortly thereafter. He was very professional and quickly cleared the toilet. The normal price would've been $129. He added a $25 coupon to reduce the price. I was very happy with the service -- very professional. Neatly dressed individual, well-spoken. The service charge was somewhat steep, however.
Description of Work: The plumber cleared out a plugged toilet.

This service was too costly, in my opinion.
Description of Work: He replaced the wax seal on the toilet. It took 40 minutes. It cost $224 and I had a coupon for the free service call. It wa deducted first and this still cost me $224.

We have worked for the customer on 7 different times over the past 12 years. On those 7 calls we have a total of 15.25 man-hours of labor and a few hundred dollars in material. If you figure out the average charge per hour we charged her it figures out to about $85 per hour. Also, figure in that we have worked for her on 7 different occasions and I believe she must have been happy with our quality of work and the fact that we guarantee all repairs for 2 years and have true 24/7 emergency service available

They were punctual, which is a big plus for me. Getting somebody to show up on time or at all unfortunately is not normal. The plumbers worked hard and were professional. Only downside was that I felt the prices were high.

Called them, and they came out promptly and replaced the thermostat and gas valve - all under warranty. The technician said that I likely had the 6 year parts and LABOR warranty, and to call again if any service is needed. My prior report, I was happy with everything except for the price. Well, for the price, you are paying up front for a long warranty that they honored. Much happier now about how much was spent.
Description of Work: Update to an earlier report. They installed a hot water heater 11 months ago. The pilot light kept going out on this unit. Needed serviced. I thought I had a 1 year warranty so I called them.

They installed the sump pump and then it started having problems over the weekend and even after my paying SO MUCH for the unit, they could not get anyone out to fix the problem until Monday. It happened awhile ago and I can't remember all the details, but this company left a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth! We got really ripped off (I know because after they left I called my usual plumber to find out what he would have charged). They have great looking trucks and a great slogan, but that is about all that is great about this company.
Description of Work: This was a lousy company! After they left I found out they WAY overcharged me to install a sump pump. They really charged about double what the unit should have cost.

We as a company are always skeptical of complaints that come over 2 years from the date of the work being done. Never the less, we wanted to tell our side of the story. We have been in business since 1950 and the last thing we will ever do is “rip off” our customers. The system we installed is manufactured by a company called Glentronics, under the name Pro Series. It is a brand they use for plumbing contractors only. They also sell retail under the name Watch Dog. If the system we installed were sold retail, it would sell at Home Depot in the $700 - $800 range. What we pay is fairly close to that. I’m sure most of you know by now that the Depots sell a lot of stuff at a lower cost than us professionals can buy from our wholesalers. This being said, the product we sold and installed has a full 3 year parts and labor warranty. That means if there is any type of problem for 3 years after we install it, there is no charge to repair. In order for use to warranty products, obviously we have to make a profit on the material being installed. Traditionally in the service business, material is marked up from 50 – 100%. In this case, we paid around $675 for the Pro Series system. If we mark up 50%, that means the selling price of the material only would be $1012 (that doesn’t include any additional pipe/fittings/clamps/etc needed to complete the job) Our plumber was on the job from 11:44am to 2:24pm on a Saturday. Counting travel time to the job (20 minutes), he has 3 hours time in this job. In 2007, most professional plumbing companies with employees and overhead were probably charging in the $80 - $140 range per hour. Add up the material charge of $1012 plus 3 hours at $105 per hour (average of $80 - $140) and you get a job total of $1327. We charged the customer $1217 for the Pro Series pump, completely installed with a 3 year parts and labor warranty! In my books, that is not a “rip off”

BF plumbing came out, was early, professional, estimated everything with care and took notes. He was clean cut and very organized, He did all of the work requested and cleaned up after himself. Everything about the experience was not only gratifying but I felt safe with him being in my home while I wasn't there. I will have BF do work for me in the future!
Description of Work: BF completed the following work: install of new water shut off valve, installed clothes washer shut offs, kitchen sink shut offs, dishwasher shut off, ice maker plumbing, bathroom sink shut offs and various other small plumbing items.
