My dining room table had acquired a two inch scratch, and all of the chairs were getting rickety because the joints were becoming unglued. Also, one of them was an arm chair with carved arms, and part of one of the arms had broken off, and not only that, but a one inch section of it was missing . In addition, someone else had kept the chairs for me during a remodeling project, and when they were returned, I found that one chair had been stored next to the chicken coop! Not only were there white chicken feathers stuck under the seat, but the finish no longer matched that of the other chairs. Don was unfazed by all of this, and set to work. He did his magic on the scratch and it disappeared. Then he tightened, repaired and cleaned all six chairs, adding color and finish to two of them. When he was done, I could not tell which chair had been stored by the chicken coop. Amazing! I was so impressed! The table and chairs now look beautiful. The chairs feel sturdy and reliable, and no one would ever guess that there had ever been any problems with them. I will definitely call Don for any furniture repairs in the future.
Description of Work: He repaired my dining room set, consisting of a table and 6 wooden chairs with upholstered seats.

Repaired my antique armoire looking better than it that had fallen and broke in several places. The repair left the armoire looking better than before it fell over . Don Cook was knowledgable and professional . I would use him again if needed and gladly recommend him to my friends.

We obtained two bids for refinishing our kitchen table & chairs. Don Cook came to our home and had several suggestions for sprucing up the look of our table without a complete refinishing. Based on our conversation with him, we opted to replace the chairs; refinish the table top; and freshen up the table legs. This not only saved us money, but the new chairs give us a much better look in the kitchen than refinishing the original chairs. It looks great. Don is a busy man and scheduled us out several weeks in advance. He showed up exactly as promised and completed the work on time.

Don was prompt in multiple visits, returned when he was scheduled, and was very neat. He did a super job on the table, and it now is a featured piece in our home, rather than being hidden away. We were completely satisfied, and have scheduled him for more work later this year.

Description of Work: Don fixed my 20-year old leather recliner. It was broken in two places. He had to make a part for one of the repairs. He also fixed the handle latch on my old china cabinet and took a water mark out of the surface of my dining room table.

Our experience with Don went very well! He was quick and very professional and was able to repair our loveseat. We would recommend him to anyone needing a furniture repair.
Description of Work: Our loveseat frame had cracked and the loveseat was only 3 years old. We didn't want to have to replace it since it was part of a set so we contacted Don Cook to see if it could be repaired. He was able to repair the cracked frame in about an hour. He then told us if it didn't hold up to call him back and he would come back out to readdress the problem.

Very well. Don came out within a day. He repaired the leg and came back to remove the clamps. It was great to have him come to the house and not have to haul it to a shop. He is very professional and courteous. If I have any other repair work needed I would use his service again and recommend him to others.

I own a 20-year-old metal-framed dining room table with four matching chairs. The chairs are on casters and roll around. Gradually, the caster sockets wore out, and casters would drop off--very disconcerting if you are sitting in the chair at the time!!! When I got down to two working chairs, I called The Furniture Medic. It took him a while to find caster sockets (try True Value or Ace Hardware stores, next to the casters). Once he did, he took only 30 minutes to fix the problem. Mr. Cook returns phone calls promptly, is punctual or early, gets right to work, leaves the work site clean, and is a pleasant person. Since he had not used the whole hour he charges, he offered to work on any other projects I might have. Though I didn't take advantage of the offer, I appreciated his willingness to give full value for his time.

It was great. Don actually correctly diagnosed the issue over the phone when we first contacted him. When he was here, he went about the work quickly and efficiently. He was a pleasure to meet, and dealt gracefully with both dogs and kids. We couldn't be happier with the repairs. We had some trouble scheduling the work, mostly because Don is very busy, and he was trying to fit us in as soon as he could, because the piano was not secure (and we have kids and dogs). We really appreciated this. We did give B's on punctuality and responsiveness (please realize, B's are "Good"!) just because he was so busy and there was a little fumbling on both our parts getting the service scheduled. Contact him by email, as that was how we were most successful. I hate all the reviews that are all A's because I don't know if I can trust them. You can trust this. We would have no hesitation to call Don again for any furniture repair we might need.
Description of Work: We needed the front legs on an upright piano re-attached. They were removed for shipping, and upon arrival, the legs would no longer thread into their slots. The piano would not stand upright without the legs, so we needed it done quickly.

The top of my large chest of drawers was stripped, sanded and stained over a period of 3 days then sprayed a few times with a finish. The top had years of wear and tear, rings of discoloration where glasses had been set, scratches and a few chips. He lightly sanded the sides and front, taking off all drawer knobs, then went over the wood with a stain. Two of the drawers had come off the track and he tightened up the gliders so they worked like new. When the chest was refinished it was just beautiful - much nicer than I could ever remember. While he was waiting for the stain to dry he looked around the room for anything he could touch up with his 'magic pen' or something he could repair. I got a lot of work done for the investment of my money. He did not ask for payment until I was totally satisfied. This job took longer than he anticipated but he did not charge me more but stuck to the original amount stated in his estimate. It is easy to see why he has repeat customers. Relationships with his customers is the key to his success, I am sure.
Description of Work: This Furniture Medic is the BEST! He is a busy guy so I was put on his calendar about 3 weeks out, but well worth the wait. I had called 2 other Medics in the metro area and they did not return my call. He wanted to refinish the piece of furniture onsite so it worked out fine. I knew exactly what I wanted and he told me what I could expect, and he was very honest about this. When dealing with wood he is the expert. One has to wonder about the customer who gave him an F. This one sticks out like a sore thumb, considering his reveiws and experience. I'll bet he could tell some stories about that job! I'm keeping his business card handy - I have other jobs for him to do, I'll be a repeat customer for sure.

I have a spindle glider chair and most of the spindles had separated from the holes. I called Angie's list to find someone to repair it and called Furniture Medic. We made an appointment for about a month later and he on time was very polite and fixed the chair right in my house. It him less than an hour and he even tightened the arms on my daughter's chair (I had been using it while mine was incapcitated) and took it out to her truck. We discussed other projects that I want addressed in the near future. Couldn't have asked for better service. Will use him again and will recommend him to friends and family.
Description of Work: The spindles on my occasional glider chair were glued back in and the chair was made comfortable and sturdy once again. He even touched up some nicks in the wood.

I called Mr. Cook when my less-than-2-year-old couch had a spontaneous collapse of part of its frame. He scheduled the appointment for a couple weeks out, and showed up on time. He did the work quickly and was very pleasant and professional. He repaired the side of the frame that broke, but also took the time to reinforce the other side, just in case. The price was very fair. I definitely would hire him again, and in fact I have hired him again; he will be fixing some dining room chairs for me next month.

I contacted Don Cook (The Furniture Medic) after finding him on Angie's list. He came out Feb. 8, 2012, to look at the 5 items I wanted to have refinished. These were all solid maple and included a coffee table, an end table, 2 dough boxes, and a small side table. Everything except the small side table were over 50 years old. They had some scratches and "water marks" on them, and just showed their 50+ years of wear and tear. Two legs would no longer "screw" in tightly. He left a written quote and said to call if we decided to schedule the work. I called Don back in about a week to accept his bid, and we scheduled the work for the week of March 19-24 in the afternoons. Don showed up on time, and if he was running late, he called. Don did all the work in the garage on his own tarps. He repaired the legs and refinished the tops (to perfectly match the rest of the piece). He then put a protective coat on them which will prevent any future marking in the event that "wet" items are not put on coasters. At the end of each afternoon, he put everything out of the way in the garage. When he was completely done, there was absolutely no sign that he had been working in the garage because of the way he left everything. The cost of the job was exactly what he had quoted me. Don was very professionsal, friendly, and obviously skilled at what he does. I would definitely use him again and will highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: The Furniture Medic (Don Cook) came to our house and refinished 5 items. I had four pieces that were solid maple and over 50 years old that needed the tops refinished and the legs tightened &/or repaired. I also had a little maple table that had belonged to my grandparents to refinish. Don did all the work on-sight so there were no "travel" or "delivery" charges. He worked in the afternoons for five days, and even finished one day ahead of schedule. He refinished the tops and put a protective coat on so that the end tables and coffee table will not be harmed in the event that "wet" glasses are set on them. The pieces now look "brand new."

I trusted Don to honestly convey what he was capable of doing and he wasn't able to come close to that.
Description of Work: Don was to refinish a 35+ year old dining set that was in average condition for its age. We needed six chairs re-caned with the set and we wanted a plastic geometric design on the front of the breakfront and around the table replaced with burlwood. He only quoted us a time frame on the table, which was six days. We relieved him of his services after nine weeks. At the end of nine weeks, the burl wood veneer was improperly put on (which I spent over $250 of my own money on) and was bubbled in several spots. He had caned one chair with the wrong size reed, smashing it in and leaving glue drips. He missed staining and finishing several spots, stained over stripped gunk and used the wrong stain color. He quoted me nearly $2500 to refinish the set and I just received a quote for $9800 to fix the set from what he did from Wood Works Inc. Don attempted to make me understand being deprioritized week after week. He attempted to blame me for his ineptitude. It was a horrible experience and I fear I have literally lost the dining set my husband and I bought ten years ago together before we married at an estate sale. It may not seem like much to many, but it meant something to me and I am heartbroken. Don may be good at a quick fix on a broken chair leg, but he will oversell his abilities and will expect you to put up with whatever he produces. If you don't like it, its your fault.

I called to schedule an appointment. He came within 3 weeks - far sooner than I expected. Our daughter found an old chest in the attic and thought it was "historic" and wanted to know the potential for restoration. We also needed some basic furniture repair. Drawers were repaired within hours and the chest is in for restoration - he gave me an honest assesment of the work (family sentimentality vs antique value). I could not be more pleased - great to know there are still people like him - A+ from me.
Description of Work: Repaired broken drawers and will repair very old family chest.. Did drawer repairs on-site immediately. Could not be more impressed with his work! More to come with his repair of the chest - a much more complicated and detailed antique repair.

Mr Cook arrived and immediately began to assess the condition of the table and 8 chairs. Within minutes he had set up his work area and began to repair and reinforce the various chairs and table. Most of the chairs were able to be used immediately. The two most damaged chairs needed to sit for 24 hours to strengthen. Within one hour everything was completed. Mr. Cook was professional, efficient, and friendly. The table and chairs are in wonderful condition and ready for many more years of use. The fact that he makes house calls made this process a breeze! I will definitely call him again!
