They came on time and actually finished faster than they anticipated. They were very prompt and polite in getting back to me to come out and give me an estimate. Once I called them to do the work they were able to come out within a few days. It's definitely reduced the must smell that was coming up from the vents when the air was on. That has disappeared, thank goodness. My radon was also reduced to half. I've not yet decided to put in the piping which would reduce it even more but its about 2-3 points under the danger zone so I'm not as concerned about it but will monitor.
Description of Work: They laid down heavy black plastic in my crawl space which is under a long and wide ranch home. They used heavy-duty strength in the area where I'll be traveling most, to the furnace to switch filters. They even were able to lift up my soft water tanks to place plastic underneath. However, I need to call them back to re-adjust them, they are sitting unlevel and I beileve that's causing some mechanical problems with the soft water tank.

Promptly responded when we first contacted them for an estimate and work was begun the next week after the estimate was given. They explained what would be done and answered all questions we had about radon and a radon mitigation system. Very knowledgeable and informative. Came back three days later to pick up radon monitor and discovered that additional work needed to be done (at no extra cost to us) so that radon levels were below 4.0. A larger fan was installed and additional pipes added in basement so that radon level finally reached 1.3. They were persistent in coming back each time to check radon levels and did additional work until the radon levels reached 1.3.
Description of Work: Installed radon mitigation system in basement. Very professional job.

The experience was about as positive as you can have! Gary, Ricky and Mark were all wonderful to work with. Calls were returned very promptly, information was always provided in a concise way and the installation went incredibly smooth. I would recommend Midwest Radon to anyone who needed testing or a system installed. They were fantastic!!
Description of Work: First Midwest Radon came out and tested our home's radon levels. We found that they were higher than the EPAs recommended levels. We contracted Midwest Radon to install the radon mitigation system as well. The guys came out within 2 days of my call and were on-time. They installed the mitigation system in a couple of hours and in a location that was as hidden and out of the way as possible.

My fiance and I recently purchased our first home. As part of our negotiations, we had the seller install a radon mitigation system. To save some money (I guess), they decided to place the radon fan and piping on the outside of the house in an area visible from the street. It was a complete eyesore, and we needed to have something done. We chose Midwest Radon based on their great reviews on Angie's List, and we couldn't be happier. Gary was very friendly and willing to help. He said he sees things like this fairly often, and that it wouldn't be difficult to move the system out of view. His worker ended up routing everything up from the basement, through the garage and out at the rear corner of the roof. The work was finished in a matter of hours. Midwest Radon helped us make the best of a bad situation.

Gary was very good about answering calls quickly, and being on time for appointments. He came to the house to look at options for installing the radon reduction system, then emailed a couple of options to me promptly. He answered questions thoroughly and patiently. Then they came to set up the radon testing equipment. The system was actually installed when I was not home, and I returned later to find that all had been done effectively. They did a good job of cleaning up. Good follow-up. I highly recommend this company.

Fantastic job from start to finish. Excellent customer service from initial phone contact, to on-site consult & estimate, to scheduling and installation of system, to pickup of equipment after re-test following installation. Gary was excellent to work with, as was Rickey and the crew. They thoroughly described the recommended work package, reasons for the particular installation design in our case, what it would cost, and what the follow-on steps would be if initial installation did not reduce the radon to acceptable levels. The mitigation system we had installed has two suction points, and we elected to run the exhaust stack straight up through the roof eve along the outside of the house, rather than going out around the eve. This added $50 to the install cost but is aesthetically more pleasing. The craftsmanship on all work is top notch. I can't say enough about how good of a job Rickey and the crew did in installing the system, including routing the PVC, especially from the 2nd suction point over to the main stack. It's a fairly long run with a few elbows needed to clear mechanicals and structure, and yet it is very straight & plumb; a very neat/clean installation. We would highly recommend Midwest. We had heard that Midwest was the best but that their prices were a little high. Yes, their prices may be a little higher, but not by much and we are talking about addressing radon after all, not the type of thing I necessarily want the lowest bidder to do. Their professionalism and craftsmanship are terrific. I'm sure there are other good companies out there, but you certainly won't be sorry if you decide to hire Midwest and have an experience like we had. Radon level prior to mitigation system installed by Midwest: 21 After: 1.8

Response from MIDWEST RADON
While the economy has caused cutbacks to office staff, our remaining six member staff is on the phone and in appointments 8-12 hours a day. With office duties shared now, it is possible a message was left and not returned but that would be incredibly rare. I sincerely regret if that has happened. Meanwhile, we spend long hours on the phone each day explaining radon to anyone who calls. For 25 years, the personal attention we feel we should give to each callers questions has always resulted in a challenge for picking up each call. Staff cutbacks add to that challenge causing many days with calls returned from the field. However, rarely is any message not returned within the hour. As you can see by the tardiness in responding to this comment, we have not actively monitored or solicited Angies members to fill our listing with hundreds of glowing reports. It appears we should begin requesting so many of our Angies clients to report so that others know we are still here 9-5, Mon-Fri.

Ricky came and confirmed the radon readings we had gotten from our own testing. He also checked our basement and worked out the way he would run the venting tubing if we selected his company. He also mentioned we may want to vent under our TV room on the first floor (under the first floor concrete slab). He was the only one who suggested this. Within a day or so, we received a proposal for work. We liked the part of the proposal that said that the cost would not exceed $1,075 for both basement and upper slab venting. Then, Gary, the owner came out one evening and ran over a couple scenarios with us but said his engineer, Ricky, would be best to work out the piping for venting the basement and upper slab. After we selected MidWest Radon and scheduled a date, they were punctual with one member of the team showing up on time to do the prep work on the sump pit opening and the other two team members arrived within an hour or so and began working out the design. As I was home, they consulted with me before doing any work. Ricky came up with an even better design than had been discussed in our prior two meetings with them. They were fantastic to have around and did a great job. They checked a second upper slab as well but determined that the original upper slab they were venting was pulling from the second upper slab as well, thus, the second upper slab did not need its' own venting pipes. All areas are being vented and they were all a pleasure to work with. Wife was very apprehensive with having anyone come to the house and install the radon mitigation system. Afterwards, even my wife was pleased with their work. Prior to the system being installed, we were getting readings of over 18 pCi/l in our basement and upper slab on the first floor. After installation of the radon system, we are now getting readings of 0.6 pCi/l. This is a very satisfactory result. I would definitely contact them again in the future if ever we purchase another home with radon problems. Very, very, very, very minor item: Once finished, they didn't vacuum up all the concrete debris left on shelving & floor. Small amounts of concrete grit and dust was left on shelving and floor in a small section of the unfinished basement. However, they left the carpets in the basement cleaner than they had been before they arrived! As stated above. I would not hesitate to either recommend them or ask them out to a new home to redo their magic.

Description of Work: A pipe was installed that pulls Radon out of my basement. The motor was placed on the back of my house out of sight from the street. My basement is no longer damp-I don't have to run my dehumidifier anymore. They are coming out on the 1st or 2nd July. We have had them out several different times. I just felt more comfortable with the information that they gave us. We like a lot of information and they volunteered that and it seemed to make more sense. They presented the information a little more clearly and completely than the others did. They were very responsive.

Great. Showed up on time. Fixed the problem promptly. In and out in about 30 minutes.
Description of Work: Our radon system was making a squealing noise, thought perhaps the fan needed oil or something of that nature. Called Midwest Radon to come take a look. Apparently a squirrel had fallen down the PVC vent tube and had gotten tangled in the fan and messed up the motor. Eek! The serviceman was very professional and handled the incident very well - with humor. The entire motor was replaced for $250 and works great. (He also disposed of the squirrel for us.)
