Top Notch Heating Cooling & Plumbing

I found Top Notch through Angie's List (first time using the service) and called the number listed on Memorial Day expecting to leave a message. A friendly answering service took my call and information, and Top Notch returned my call first thing the next morning, and were able to get a service technician to my house within four hours. I was very pleased with that. The technician showed up a few minutes early and was already starting to look at my heat pump when I arrived at my house to meet him. I told him what I thought the issue was, and he confirmed that I did have a bad compressor after he ran a few tests. At this point I reminded him that I wanted an estimate both to repair AND to replace the system. (In the meantime, you could see a thunderstorm approaching, and the technician became eager to move on to another job.) Before he left, I requested a replacement quote again. He went out to his truck, flipped through a few binders, and then scribbled some numbers on a quote page that did not even list the efficiency of the units he was quoting (nonetheless the model number or brands). He did not talk about any of the features, warranties, or other new unit information, but gave me three installation estimates ranging from $8,121 to $10,031 for a new 3-ton heat pump and air handler system installed. I asked for more details, knowing that those estimates were thousands higher than they should be, and he said he just wrote down what was in his book, and that was the end of his visit. Typically, most installers will provide free estimates for replacing an entire system. I agreed to pay the $79 service call to determine what was wrong with my existing unit, but also expected that I could get a halfway legitimate and accurate quote for a replacement at the same time. If the prices I was quoted are accurate, I would suggest that other consumers keep shopping for competitive bids for replacement systems.

I took vacation time off of work to meet Top Notch at my residence to quote approx $5K worth of work for replacement of A/C unit and furnace. An hour later, the guy emailed me saying that he was choosing not to bid the work because his standard solution would not work due to a tight clearance between the AC unit and the surrounding fence. Well if he had spent a little more time, he could have come up with a different solution that would have worked. The other 4 contractors (A-grade on Angie's List) who bid the project had this problem too and found a work-a-round with no issues. What a waste of my time! My gut feeling is that he didn't want to bother with me knowing that he was in competition with other bidders.

They did a good job and were responsive. They are going to do yearly maintenance for our furnace & A/C. They offered a senior discount which was very attractive and he was prompt in coming out. He just did a good job doing the tune up and explained things to us. We were pleased. The price was within the ballpark figure with a senior discount of 15% and I was very happy with the price because of the senior discount. The quality as far as we know is excellent. He discovered the humidifier pane had mold growing in it which nobody else had told us so they got rid of that and got that cleaned up. We are going to use them to do our duct cleaning next.

They had damaged something expensive but had it replaced without much fuss, which was good. The work went well overall.

The repairman came out the same day I called. I'd been having problems with the humidifier. He replaced the filter and showed me the proper way to use the settings on the humidifier. He cleaned out the furnace and taught me some new things about the furnace as well. Very polite and informative. Would definitely recommend.

I got several estimates to replace one furnace and 2 A/C units. Mike gave me the best price, used name brand equipment and did a perfect installation job. He didn't try to replace more than was needed (as some other company's did). The final price was exactly the same as the estimate - Can't beat the great job and fair price that they did.

The name of the company speaks for itself. Mike was on target with his estimate and made arrangement to meet me at a time the worked for me (evening). His bid was in the middle of the pack; however he took the time to explain the options. I told him that I wanted what he would put in his Mom's house. The tech that did the work was also great and very professional. All work was done timely and it has been really nice having a cool house during this burst of summer heat. Great job!

My experiences with this company were great. They cleaned up after themselves. Also, they did everything that they said that they would do and they did it on time. I liked them because they did their work instead of trying to sell me something. I would use their services again in the future.

We needed a humidifier and found tob notch to be one of the authorized dealers in the area. Got back a quote that was cheaper than the others and had an awesome angieslist record. We called and got things scheduled. He showed up on time and was finished an hour or so later. This included time to explain how to use the system. Great work.

It was great. Perfect. I just felt like they were reliable and dependable. They did a good job explaining the things that needed to be replaced. They were pretty accurate with their estimate.

They are fair and live up to the contract. They keep their appointments and come when they say they will.

Very friendly and professional. When heating unit part was replaced the tech stayed until he was sure the furnace was working right. It kept shutting off so that's when he check the thermostat which just needed batteries. Stayed after hours to finish job. Would definitely use again.

Has done general service for us for years. Listened to our needs, gave us several options. Made one trip to evaluate installation needs, then came in and got the job done. Didn't mind my hanging out and asking questions during installation. The job didn't require any follow-up visits.

We have zoned air conditioning and heating in our home. The older AC (almost 20 years old) finally gave up the ghost and needed to either have a temporary fix on the unit (which had been done before) or to replace it. We opted to replace it. I joined Angie's List to see what I could find out to make this happen. I contacted two different contractors from Angie's list. Top Notch came out first and made their bid. Mike Brosseit came out and made the bid, answered my questions about different levels of AC and Heating. In addition, Mike raised the possibility of us receiving the Cool Homes discount because we were doing a significant update from an old AC to a more than required energy efficient unit. Top Notch is on the KCPL list to test and provide this discount. This provided a savings of $850. This was a program I had not heard of and I was delighted that Mike brought it up. Top Notch came out and did the test for the Cool Homes discount. We scheduled the pre-install appointment and we moved to the next step. We did miss the initial pre-install date based on phone tag, but we got the pre-install done, we got the appointment scheduled and we set the install date.Top Notch came in on installation date, had everything ready to go, showed up when they said they would, completed the job in the time frame they said they would. We have had no issues since the installation in June. So we are more than happy with the service and installation we received. And to top it all off we received some delicious chocolate chip cookies as a thank you for being a Top Notch customer.

My A/C went out on Thursday. The diagnosis was an a-coil leak. My normal company recharged it and set an appt. for Monday, believing the charge would hold thru the weekend. On Saturday afternoon (and of course Sunday was the hottest day of the year) it quit working altogether. My normal company doesn't have emergency services, so I called Top Notch based on feedback on this list. They responded to my call very quickly on Sunday morning, but the guy on the phone was pretty gruff. He said someone would be here between 10 and noon, and they got here about 11:45. He quickly (and correctly) identified the issue as a bad condenser motor. My thought was that fixing the motor would get it going again, even though not great due to the leak. AFTER he fixed it he said the freon was completely gone, so I still couldn't run it at all until I got the a-coil replaced. They wanted to charge me $1300 for the a-coil, and $79.00 a pound for freon. I already had a bid from my normal company for $800 for the a-coil, including freon. Needless to say, I decided to be hot another day. A hotel for the night was cheaper than the price difference. The technician was rude about it. I knew I was going to pay a higher service charge ($120 vs. my normal company's $85). After he diagnosed it, I asked how much. He said "400 to 500 dollars." He didn't how much it would cost just one minute before doing the work? He already knew exactly what part it was and what needed to be done. But I never thought I'd get ripped off so bad on the price - $520 for the motor and labor (all of 5 minutes). My normal company charges $285 for the same repair. So, I wasted nearly $300 (the higher service call plus the higher charge). I was willing to pay a premium to get the house cooled down 24 hours sooner, but I paid it and STILL didn't have A/C. I will never use this company again.

They are very good people. They are dependable. They do good work. Their price seems competitive. I have a set yearly plan with them. They are very polite.

Being somewhat of a handyman myself, I first attempted to locate the source of a strange vibration noise coming from the furnace/AC. I tried several different things to no avail. I had used Top Notch for another problem last year, so I gave them a call. They had a serviceman out the very next day and he was able to determine that the blades on the squirrel cage fan were coming loose just by listening to it. Since this was not a normal item carried on the truck, he had to drive to the supplier and was back and had the new fan installed in less than two hours. Problem solved. I only which I would have called them sooner and saved myself some time and frustration.

He noticed that the tube in the A/C needed to be blown and cleaned out. He spent a great deal of time and gave me good information. After blowing out the tube he did a full inspection of the unit for no additional charge. They also gave us a follow up call to make sure everything was running ok. We have used their service for years and will continue to use them in the future.

Very impressed with Top Notch. Mike came out and provided a free estimate. He explained the options, made a recommendation and answered all my questions. He told me about a Lennox rebate and tax credit that some of the other companies had not previously mentioned. They came out within a week and installed the new units. The installers were polite, professional and tidy. I was impressed with the customer service and would recommend them to others.
