Top Notch Heating Cooling & Plumbing

We used Top Notch in the summer for our AC check/tune up so we bought the "big deal" they offered for the furnace check/tune up. The gentleman that came out was on time and very nice. I did not stay down in the basement the whole time he was doing the work but I did see him replace the filter. My concern is that he was only here for 20 minutes total and probably 5 minutes was spent talking with my husband and I after he completed the work. There is a check list at the bottom of the receipt that shows all of the items for a tune-up checked off. He told us that our furnace is only 9 years old and in excellent shape so maybe all of the items did not need to be done on the checklist.

Over all I was very happy with the service.

The only complaint was that the visit window I was provided was 11 - 3. I am sure that is the window as I'm frequently scheduling meetings & had it marked on two calendars. However, when I called at 3:15 to ask when they would arrive, the person answering the phone remarked that the window was 1 - 5 and made it sound like I was crazy for thinking 11 - 3, which irritated me. He arrived at approximately 3:45. The service man was very friendly and told me what he was doing through the whole process of inspecting. He couldn't turn one of the furnaces back on, but we determined it was likely a security company safety delay thing (which it turned out to be). He could have insisted on a new thermostat & I probably would have bought one...but it wasn't needed and I'm super happy he didn't pressure me into buying one. Overall the experience gets an A, but I recommend a review of the scheduling & admin policy.

Top Notch was prompt and very friendly. The tech that came to my home thoroughly explained what would be done, where is would be done and how long it would take. He also provided suggestions on ways that I can improve the air quality in my home with explanations as to why. The tech completed the work at the time he initially specified and cleaned up and disposed of all of the materials. I enjoyed the techs and would use the company again.

Good price and great service. I had bids from 4 other companies and 16 different hvac systems. Top Notch had the best overall price and package. This furnace has the pvc flue venting that goes out the side of the house. This was tricky in an old house with a low basement ceiling. The technician worked out the problems and routed the flue in an unobtusive location. They also had to locate the new outside unit on the other end of the back of the house to make way for a new deck. The cleanup and haul off of the old unit was thorough. Overall a great job.

I had received a Big Deal email notification for air duct cleaning with Angie's member Top Notch Heating and Cooling. I was set to call them back to schedule the service when, low and behold, our A/C unit stopped working. In July. So while scheduling the duct cleaning I asked if I could also schedule a service call. They put us on a "priority" list and the technician was at our house by the very next morning. The technician was friendly, professional and thorough - to the point of correcting mistakes made a month earlier by a different company. It was WONDERFUL to have A/C again when all other companies were telling us it would be up to 2 weeks! We were not able to use the duct cleaning, unfortunately, due to an incompatibility between our A/C system (old) and their cleaning unit. But, as before. the technician was friendly and professional and even provided us with recommendations of other companies he knew would be able to work with our system. We are now on their seasonal maintenance program - thank you Top Notch!!

This is the second zoned air conditioner that they have put in for us. We would use them again.

Called Top Notch Sunday morning after not having air conditioner overnight. Called around 7:30 and received return phone call around 7:45AM. Technician told me he could be to my house in 2 to 3 hours depending on the weather. Took 4 hours for tech to call and tell me he would be there shortly. Arrived a little after noontime which is over an hour later than latest time promised. Took tech about 15 to 20 minutes to look system over, replace capacitator, and look over system for any additional problems. Technician told me what problem was and how to prevent it. Service was pretty good, but felt pricing might be a little high when searching actual prices of capicitator's online, charged $160 for essentially a $20 part and it seemed pretty easy to change, time estimate was also a little too long. If you are going to be 4 hours then just let me know or give me a better estimate on time. Would use again but would probably place a phone call to a competitor first next time something comes up.

Work performed professionally and as expected. Have used before. Will use again.

They have been a very good provider for years. I have a service agreement with them. When I have needed them, it has been same day service. They are not cheap but when I expect VIP service and same day service, it is worth it and I get it done professionally. I have been using them for 5 or 6 years and have not had a problem with them. I pay less than $200 for a VIP service agreement and they do not charge me for coming out. They come out even on a Sunday night and they don’t charge me. They only charge for parts and labor. They are always courteous and clean. I recommend them to other members.

I felt that the "tune-up" price was all I should have been charged. 30 day guarantee if problem happens again. The extra $100 truck roll charge off-putting. Probably won't call on this provider again.

In the end, this company did what I requested and "made it right". Having said that though, I still gave them an overall rating of "B" because of the confusion and apparent miscommunication about what I thought was a straight forward request. Here's the story. We got hit by that hail storm that blew through on April 3rd, 2011. Our outside air conditioning unit got hit bending many of the cooling fins. Our insurance inspector told me to have the fins combed and the unit thoroughly inspected to make sure there wasn't any more damage than bent fins. I got on Angie's List, found Top Notch Heating & Cooling and called them. I told them that the primary reason I called them is to have the fins on my A/C unit combed but, while they're here also do a cleaning and inspection on the entire system to make sure it's running properly. They said they can perform that service and they scheduled a date and time -- June 1st between 1 and 5. The day of the appointment, they called over an hour early and said they were on their way. Normally, early is good, but I went to work the morning planning to be home by 12:45 at the latest. There was no way to get home in time so my wife had change her plans to be there. Then, when the technician got there, he said he never combs A/C units and doesn't even have a tool for that. He went ahead and did the cleaning/inspection but did not comb the fins -- the thing I needed them to do most. The technician recommended repair or replacement. My wife called me while the technician was there and I said, OK if that's your professional recommendation, but we need an estimate to send to our insurance company. He left without leaving an estimate and didn't even write down what unit we had so he could do the estimate back at the office. When I got home I called them and they assured me that they do comb fins and seemed puzzled why the technician didn't do it. After a few calls and emails back and forth I finally got an estimate and made another appointment to have the fins combed just in case. I sent the estimate into my insurance company and they said, before they would consider replacement, they want the fins combed and the system tested. Then we'd go from there. I called the company back to verify that they were still coming and that they would, this time, indeed comb the fins and test the system. They did and the system tested within specs. My only issue with this company is the confusion, the apparent left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing and the resulting extra calls, emails and appointments. Basically, just the hassle of it all. They were very up front with me that combing the fins would not make the unit look like it did before and, they were right, it doesn't. The work appears to be done well and I have no reason to complain about that. My only complaint is not getting the work, that I specifically requested, done right the first time. Stuff happens, so I still plan to give them another try. I hope for better results next time...

I suspected that I needed a new water heater. So, I contacted TOP NOTCH HEATING & COOLING, seeing them on Angie's List and the neighborhood directory. They said they had a plumber by the name of Ryan and that he would call me. He called me promptly to asset the problem with the water heater. I showed him water from the tap to show how hot water looked compared to cold water, hot was a golden brown. He opened up the hot water heater and found that the heater would need to be replaced. He found a 75 gallon water heater for us. He arrived and took out the old one and replaced with a new water heater from the front door to the basement. They were very cautious to not scrape any walls, floor, etc. getting it to the basement. They discovered at this time that the pressure valve was also faulty and replaced by cutting a hole in the closet. After completion they turned on the water and everything was fine. He wrote a invoice that clearly states a 15% discount for my total bill, the price was originally $2,544.00, with the discount he wrote out it came out to $2,114. He commented that your lucky getting this discount, because it was such a large bill. Here's the Problem/Conflict I have,Yesterday, someone called from the TOP NOTCH HEATING & COOLING stating they needed a code from Angie's list in order to get the 15% discount and from talking to him i get the feeling that they will not honor the discount without the code. I was never told of this by Top Notch, but I called Angie's List for a code and found that it was not 15%, but $15 off. I feel that with the written invoice I have, showing 15% discount, that this should be honored by TOP NOTCH HEATING & COOLING. Before they even began the work they reassured me that there would be a 15% discount and that's why we decided to go with them. The issue is not about the work done by Ryan, he did a great job. The problem is of the 15% discount. I was contacted by the company and told that the total cost would have to be paid. However, he suggested that we split the difference and to the best of my knowledge I paid $300.00 additional.

The company representative arrived on time and quickly went to work evaluating our A/C system. The technician not only appeared to do a thorough job of making sure our system was ready for summer, but also explained what he was checking and why. I would use this company again.

Overall good. The tech was on time and ready to work. He performed all tasks and explained any questions I had. Only negative was the cost of freon. The dispatcher told me a different price than what the tech wanted to charge We had to call a manager and they lowered the price. After further research they charge way more than other companies, however the service call was much lower because it was deal through Angie's List. I'd use them again if i couldn't get my two other favorites in first.

We are purchasing an existing home in Shawnee. The seller had cats, but my wife is allergic to cats. So, we wanted to make sure to get the ducts cleaned prior to moving in fully. I was to meet the techs from Top Notch at 8am at the new home. Although they were a bit late (20-30 mins), I did receive a call from the office prior to the appointment time stating that they would arrive within 30 mins, so that made it tolerable. I was unsure of their air duct cleaning process as my wife had made the calls and arrangements. The techs asked to see the furnace first. They stated immediately that due to the surrounding finished basement walls, they did not have the adequate access to the furnace needed to perform their cleaning process. Instead of vacuuming out via the floor air vents, they push all the stuff down from the air vents to the furnace ducts and collect from there. But, due to the tight quarters of where the furnace was and the walls surrounding it, they stated the preferred method would not be possible. In fact, when I described that we were doing this due to the cat allergies, the tech stated that we would be better off using a different company that does alternative cleaning methods better than them. They could've said nothing, done the service anyways and taken our money, but they were honest and said we would be better off with somebody else in this case. I thanked them for their honesty, and off they went at no charge. It is quite refreshing to come across honest companies and honest technicians who don't try to screw you. So, although they didn't do any work that I can review fully, I would not hesitate to call them for other work in the future based on this experience.

They have always done a great job. I haven?t set up my usual appointments with them this year. When we pay in the fall for service we get the spring service free. It is like a package deal. They're very good about keeping track of when we need to schedule appointments. They call us and send postcards and reminders. They have specials a couple of times a year to install humidifiers, air conditioners, heating and so forth at significantly reduced prices. They're pretty good at giving such information and offering some pretty good deals. They are also very good at answering questions.

It went very well, there were no problems at all.

I have had a contract with them for years. I paid $69 for the service call. They checked my heating and cooling system the last time they came out. I like them because they come right away whenever I have an emergency. I have a year-around contract with them. They are always friendly and professional. They come out when they say they would and they say what they say they are going to do. I would recommend them and I would suggest that you get a yearly contract with them because with them there, you do not have to worry. I will use them again in the future.

Everything went about as well as could be expected. We've typically had Top Notch come out 1-2 times per year to check the heating/AC system. As usual, it was easy to get on the schedule and the job was done quickly.

Fine but price for this service could be cheaper.

They won the bidding with two other contractors, then showed up the next day to install. Remarkable since the heat and busy time for them was upon us. They also steered me toward achieving an energy star rating high enough to achieve the tax credits, and the KCPL rates by using a heat pump and high-efficiency unit. One bidder was directing me toward a higher efficiency that I didn't need to spend the extra money for.I checked their references, and found dozens of others totally satisfied with them. More than "satisfied", enough to encourage others to use them. PS I am an architect and I deal with bidders and contractors all of the time. These guys deserve the best ratings.
