We had a friend tile a shower for us. Shortly after, we noticed the grout cracking around the bench he installed. I googled the problem and found that he did not waterproof the bench and floor correctly. He used water resistent backer board but I didn't know it wasn't appropriate for the bench. I didn't know of anyone to correct the problem so I read many many reviews on Angie's List before picking JMS Tile. I spoke to the owner on the phone, he understood my problem immediately and explained in detail how it would need to be solved. He came out the next day and gave me an estimate. Because of incorrect plumbing (which I also suspected), they had to remove a few feet of my new tile on the wall, the floor tile, jackhammer out the floor and rework the plumbing about 2' down. They also reconstructed the bench. We scheduled the work out a few weeks, but they were able to get to me sooner due to a job that finished ahead of schedule. They were scheduled to arrive Monday morning at 9 and said it would take a week. They arrive every single day on time, worked efficiently and cleaned up after themselves. They were extremely professional. The work is outstanding. It's so beautifully done, finished on-time and for the estimated price. We're thrilled. I'm telling everyone I know that this is the company to use for tile work. I've never been more satisfied. Jon carefully explained every step and I'm confident the work will last for decades. Worth every penny. They were courteous, and friendly, we even left them in our home unattended the last three days. I can't say enough about pleased we are to have found them. We highly recommend this company.

I chose marble tiles which cost approx $1600.Other cost was shower head, toilet, and wall materials. Scott who works with Jon did the work.I was very impressed how neatly all the work was done. The tile work is beautiful. I will use JMS Tile again.

We were very gunshy after a horrible experience with the original contractor we hired to do this work in April 2012 (see my reviews for backstory), but we were immediately at ease with Jon and Scott. They really seemed to know their stuff! During the demo they ran into some "issues" left over by the previous contractor but they took care of them without question. The quality of the tile work is excellent - and it is a night and day difference between that of the previous installer. They used all the proper materials, the correct type of grout, they kept the work area clean and neat, and moved right along on the job without any issues. We had a few special requests, which were all accommodated eagerly. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone, and we would definitely use them for future projects. Can't say enough good about them!
Description of Work: Remove existing porcelain floor tile and tub surround/shower wall tile. Installed new concrete board, shampoo box in shower, removed/reinstalled toilet (cleaned silicone that was left on it by previous remodeler), installed toeboard on cabinet.

They are probably one of the best for the Kansas City Metro out of half a dozen contractors that I contacted. Even though I didn’t use the, I would still give them a good referral because their bid was a good bid. They had proof of their work on the Angie's List website. I just ended up going with a family friend. They were so booked out and I got my friend in quicker. I would still recommend them. Their bid was for around $2200. It is just that my work didn’t pan out with their schedule. They were booked like 2-3 months out and I needed the work done pretty quickly. I would feel comfortable calling them up and getting a bid for additional work. Based on their bid and their level of experience, they would probably be the first persons that I would call if my family friend wasn’t available. I would definitely give them the opportunity to come back out and give me another bid on another project and see how that goes just based on my initial experience. Once we established an appointment, they were pretty much on it.

Overall, the job went beautifully, and we are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: JMS Tile did a remodel on an upstairs bathroom between two bedrooms. Jon came out and gave an estimate, and then met my wife and I at the Tile shop. He was very helpful with advice on tile and colors, plus we got his discount on the tile that was purchased. Jon and Scott cut out a fiberglass shower/tub, and rebuilt the walls. The shower/tub was replaced with a travertine tile shower and floor, as well as a tile bathroom floor, and wainscots. They also installed a new toilet, and faucets to the existing cabinets. The $2600 was just for the labor, and I paid for all the tile, toilet, etc. All the work was excellent, and the shower and floor are beautiful. We wouldn`t hesitate to use JMS again. They also cleaned up well and were always on time.

We have a 2 story fireplace wall with windows that we wanted to enhance with stone. The guys at JMS tile answered the phone and came right over, ( a big reason why they got the job, and their ratings on Angie's list ) and showed us their previous work and gave us a fair bid. We went to the tile shop and selected our materials (travertine split-face marble) and set up the work appointment. The guys showed up when scheduled, always did what they promised, and were very clean in the process. It took 5 days but the results were stunning. The thing that impressed me most was how efficient they were with their cuts and materials, which left us with little waste and several hundred dollars worth of tile that I could return to the Tile shop for a refund! I can't be happier with the outcome and would not hesitate to hire JMS again in the future.

Jon had several creative ideas for our space but was also accomodating to our hopes and more traditional plans. We spent a good portion of our funds on the travertine and could have reduced costs with different choices. It's helpful to research the differences between stone options and man-made tiles, as well as cleaning methods before you go to the tile store to browse.
Description of Work: Jon and Scott completed a master bathroom remodel with placement of travertine on the floor,, on some walls, around a tub area and shower room. . They tore out a prior tile remodel that was installed incorrectly with resulting cracked tiles and broken grout. We wish we would have hired Jon and Scott for our first remodel, as they would have saved us several thousand dollars. We are pleased with their work, attention to detail and attention to our particular plans and ideas for the remodel.

Jon and Scott of JMS Tile performed the majority of our master bathroom remodel, installing a beautiful stone tile shower, backsplash, and tub surround. They did a fantastic job at a great price. Jon bids and manages the projects, and Scott does most of the actual tile work. Both were a pleasure to work with. Before the project began, Jon met with us at The Tile Shop. He spent over an hour with us and the store manager selecting materials. We saved a lot of money by using his contractor's discount, plus an additional discount he was able to swing with the manager. We ended up buying a lot of decorate pieces, so our total ran about $2500, but Jon assured us we would get a refund of at least $300 in leftover material. Our refund actually exceeded $600 because they made so little waste! The actual work took 2 weeks. Scott was very patient with our little "suggestions," and had several great suggestions of his own. When we discovered some load-bearing studs where we wanted to place a cubby in the shower, they re-routed some plumbing to place the cubby right between the showerhead and handle. It looks really cool. This was the only upcharge in the entire project ($50), and Jon was very upfront and honest about it. Jon and Scott also spent quite a bit of time re-wiring some light switches and hanging a chandelier, even though that wasn't part of the estimate. They really went above and beyond, working weekends and into some evenings. They have a good attention to detail. Our shower and backsplash look amazing! They also recommended that we save and donate our old shower pan, shower doors, vanity tops, faucets, and mirrors to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. We ended up with a charitable donation tax deduction of almost $500. In summary, I would definitely recommend JMS Tile. We couldn't be more pleased with the work, and the price. By avoiding the big-name general contractor remodelers and, instead, subbing out various tasks like tile work to JMS, we saved thousands while getting higher-grade materials.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced existing builder's-grade white ceramic tile backsplash, tub surround, and shower with stone tile (price includes all tile purchased with contractor's discount at The Tile Shop and miscellaneous materials) 2. Modified shower layout 3. Installed all faucets (purchased separately) 4. Repaired tile floor 5. Installed chandelier

Awesome work, super fast, punctual, good price, and super friendly guys. We'll definitely be using them again!
Description of Work: I started tiling our master bath and got as far as getting the backer board down and ran out of time. We were selling the house, and needed the tile laid and grouted QUICKLY. JMS came over in the evening after their regular day ended and helped me out. They did an absolutely amazing job - didn't need to use any layout lines or anything. They picked a spot and worked from it, and the tile came out awesome - no weird sizes or strange cuts. The only tiny edge pieces are in the back of the bathroom closet, out of sight. They did in 3 evenings what it would have taken me another week or two to do on my own.

I called Jon to bale me out of a mess another tile guy had walked out on the job. Jon returned my call that day and met me at the house gave me an estimate and told me he could start right away and have it finished in a day. He called his partner Scott and they started the job Saturday afternoon and finished up on Sunday. They were very good to work with and did a very good job. I paid alot more then the other esitmates I had gotten although because of the situation and the fact that they worked on the weekend to get it done for me I feel like the charge was fair. I also had Jon estimate a bathroom job for me and his price was very fair. I will be using them again and would highly recommend them .

In the hall bathroom, the bath surround was removed, old flooring was taken up and the floor leveled. Jon had to redo quite a bit of the plumbing. The height of the shower was extended. The bath surround was tiled and the tile was continued half way up the walls around the rest of the bathroom. Scott designed a "shampoo nook" for bottles etc. A new pedestal sink was installed. In the small bathroom the shower surround and base were removed along with the shower door. The shower was tiled from floor to ceiling again with another "shampoo nook" and then tile was continued halfway up the wall around the rest of the room. A new shower base was installed, again the height of the shower head was extended. A new faucet was installed in the pedestal sink. We stayed close to the estimate which was very fair.
Description of Work: We contacted Jon of JMS Tile for an estimate to tile our hall bathroom and another small bathroom. Jon recommended a tile store where we would receive his vendor discount, in fact we had already seen a very nice display at this store. Scott did the actual tiling and did an excellent job. The hall bathroom came out beautifully. The smaller bathroom is where we ran into a problem with the same tile. Even though the lot numbers etc. were the same, there was a variation in the color of the tile. When we mentioned this to Scott and Jon they immediately contacted the manager of the store where the tile was purchased. The manager of the tile store came and took photos to send to the vendor of the tile. To their credit, JMS Tile returned a week or so later and tore everything out of the smaller bathroom, down to the studs. They did not get paid for this work as the tile vendor would only reimburse the cost of replacement tile. We chose different tile for the second bathroom and Scott did another excellent job. Scott was very easy to get along with and was especially good at answering questions or showing why and how he was doing certain things. If you are looking for a company that does good work and stands behind their product you cannot do any better than JMS Tile.

We made the mistake of selecting a different contractor only because of lower tile cost. After the original contractor performed much of the work and walked out on the job when we confronted him over significant quality problems, we contacted Jon for an estimate to finish the job. While the job was now too small for him to accept given the distance to the job site, he was extremely helpful in answering technical questions and referring us to a reputable contractor in our area. Next time I need tile work done, JMS will be the first company I call.

We used Jon in August of 2009 for a large bathroom project. We were so pleased with the job, we referred him to friends, and then had him return to do this small job (ceramic tile for a laundry room) in Sept of 2011. As before, he gave us a fair bid, showed up when he said he would, and finished the job when he said he would. He is meticulous and neat. You won't be disappointed if you use him.

Jon came to the house to bid the job. He also met us at his tile outlet (we were able to get his vendor discount) to help us pick out the tile for the shower and floor. Jon and Scott started the job approximately one week after the bid was made. Because the job included the removal of some walls we did not know what problems we might run into. Of course the job changed as the walls were removed resulting in less work, which was not really obvious to me. Jon lowered his bid without me asking him too. In addition to the major job changes, I also requested minor changes as the job progressed. All requests for changes were met positively by Jon and Scott. None of the usual contractor response, "if you change anything I will have to charge you more". Jon created a shower design and carried that design to the vanity mirrors. Scott is the tile installation expert who is a professional that anyone would want in their home. Being retired as you can imagine I was providing constant input as the job progressed, which was always received positively.
Description of Work: Master Bathroom Remodel. Demolish and dispose of old shower and partial walls, remove and dispose of old vinyl and carpet, rebuild shower with mud pan and 3 short curb sides, install new tile in shower, and wainscot walls outside the shower, install new lighting above all new mirrors, install additional can ceiling lighting, relocate existing can ceiling lighting, install new wiring for two new electrical outlets, install new 7 foot cabinet, raise existing double sink vanity to contemporary hight, remove old jacuzzi and cap all water lines, install mobile make-up mirror and new "sit down" dressing table, build false wall to accept recessed medicine cabinet, removed closet door frame and widen opening.

Jon was always fair, and upfront with his estimates. Him and Scott were always punctual. They respected our home and their daily and final cleanup was always immaculate! Jon was always honest about the possibility of plumbing rework and their were a few surprises due to less-then-efficient original plumbing. Both Scott and Jon were always willing to explain their work and the necessities of performing whatever work they felt was necessary to complete the job in a timely and quality manner. We received sizeable discounts on tile due to JMS Tile's reputation at a local tile store where Jon only purchases the highest quality material. We were also able to return unused portions of tile which saved us some money. If you desire quality materials, incredible workmanship, and polite and respectful people in your home, have JMS Tile build you some fantastic-looking showers and bathrooms!
Description of Work: JMS Tile remodeled all three of our bathroom showers, two from scratch with tile work and one with flooring tile and installation of a pre-fab shower unit. Some plumbing re-work was also necessary due to less-than-efficient plumbing work on the original house, which we are the one and only tenants since it was new in 1992.

Excellent. John provided a quote promptly and he was competitive with other tile companies. He price was about the middle of the quotes we got and it the work JMS Tile did was worth the money. His business partner, Scott, did most of the tiling and he was efficient and very pleasant to work with. All work was done to our specifications and in a timely manner.
Description of Work: JMS Tile did tile flooring and bathtub/shower wall tile for two bathrooms in our house. John and Scott are the two men who run the business and Scott did most of the tile work in our house. He did a fantastic job! The tile looks great and he was very easy to work with. Scott got the job done quickly and efficiently. I would certainly hire this company again.

Jon and Scott were fantastic! We had a idea of what we wanted, but didn't know how to translate it into our room. They helped us finalize the design, told us where to go to get specific items for the plumbing and floor. Returned calls promptly, did not complain when we changed something at the last minute and worked around our crazy schedule. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Had absolutely no problems or concerns. They finished on time and on budget. We will most definitely use JMS Tile again.

We brought in Jon at a stage of remodel that was very challenging for them to complete the work. There were multiple other contractors on site & to allow them to work in a space that was not invaded regularly by others was almost impossible. Scott who did most of the installation always maintained a positive attitude, worked well with the others on site & stayed so focused on the job & both Scott & Jon did an amazing job creating the look we had described & envisioned. Jon met us on site & did a complete walk through & asked numerous questions - he was the most thorough of anyone we had out. He was quick to respond & I felt bid the job at a very reasonable yet appropriate amount. He also recognized early on that there could be some gray areas of where his roll started & how the other contractors were going to leave the space for him to come in. We were able to troubleshoot a lot of issues before they ever became real issues. Jon had a great relationship with the Tile shop where we sourced most of the tile (our guy Sam there was actually who highly recommended Jon to us. There were some challenging points of Jon & Scott not being able to get into rooms to complete their work so they shifted around multiple times - but always stayed on task & kept focused. Their flexibilty was much appreciated. Their focus on excellence was a joy to work with. We knew when they started on a room that each time we came to check in we would be wowed by what we saw - and we were! We had done most of the designing & layout - but as stated above - there were some tricky spots that we didn't know what to do & Jon quickly came up with solutions & we were moving forward! I would HIGHLY recommend JMS tile for any size job you might have - you can't go wrong with their dedication, integrity & focus on quality work. For the length of time this project has taken us (almost a year) - they were one of our highlights of who we were able to work with. We knew we didn't have to micromanage them - they were there to do a qualtiy job & get it done fast.
Description of Work: Jon & Scott installed all of our tile throughout our house. We are currently remodelling an older home in Hyde Park - and doing a combination of modern & classic styles. Jon was able to give great input on really tricky areas that allowed us to maintain our vision for the house without losing the continuity between rooms. They also prepared the areas for install - as with older homes can be a challenge with unlevel surfaces. They installed 4 bathrooms, a complete steam shower, kitchen tile, foyer & stair risers. They dealt with multiple styles & types of tile & made it all work together
It went just as well as the first one. They do wonderful work and offer excellent service. The quality of their work is very high and their workmanship is superb. They are very responsive in taking care of any minor issues, and I couldn?t be happier with them.

We selected JMS Tile based on the estimated cost of services and the understanding of what we wanted demonstrated by owner, Jon Shumate. He provided a detailed estimate of services and time to completion. His recommendations on the renovation were never pressured, he allowed us the time and information to make our decisions. He was helpful, informative, and responsive. Jon listened to what I hoped to achieve and designed a renovation to fit my expectations. He assisted us in the selection of the stone, saving us money by passing on his professional discount. When I encountered problems obtaining the fixtures I wanted, Jon recommended a supplier who was not only helpful and obtained the materials in a timely fashion but was also less expensive that our local discount chain. Jon, ably assisted by Scott, began and completed the job on schedule. They removed all the tear-out materials with a minium of dust and disruption. Any delays in the process were due to my scheduling problems, not their's. Throughout the process Jon and Scott were very pleasant, dependable, accomodating, and easy to work with. We quickly came to value their suggestions and realize they are persons of integrity who take pride in their work. We are very pleased with the job they did, in fact, the bath turned out better than we had hoped. We intend to have Jon's help on future projects. We recommend them unconditionally.
Description of Work: JMS coordinated a complete renovation of our master bath. It involved removal of all the fixtures, elimaination of a tub and relocation of the shower. Jon Shumate provided the design and coordinated the services of a plumber/electrician and fixture provider. He removed and disposed of all the existing materials after protecting the immediate area around the renovation; all debris was removed each day. He suggested sources for mirrors and window.
