I called NIPSCO and said I wanted a seperate meter for a poolhouse that has been converted to a one bedroom rental house. NIPSCO said to hire a plumber to prepare the gas lines and they would come out to install a meter. When Abe's technician arrived, I explained that I wanted to set up gas plumbing for a second meter on the poolhouse. The technician put a Tee fitting on the 1 inch black pipe main line going into the current meter and capped the line. The charge was $200. We called NIPSCO and learned that we needed a pressure test on the lines before the meter could be installed. We called Abe's again and they said the charge for a pressure test was $260. The technician came out, hooked up his gear and found that the gas lines had many leaks. He resealed several connections and pressured up the system. The next morning, the pressure had fallen to 0. I called several times trying to get Abe's to come out and finish the work. The response from the receptionist was that they were very busy, and ours was a small job. The fact that I had already paid for the job in cash didn't seem to matter. The answer from the technician was that the system had a lot of leaks and he would have to charge to fix all the leaks; the system was holding pressure for about 15 minutes, and to pass the pressure test, it needs to hold pressure for 24 hours. When I agreed to pay the extra to fix the leaks, he said he would be out. Later he called and said that after checking with the county regarding the pressure check and with NIPSCO, a second meter couldn't be installed because the property was zoned residential and only permitted for one meter. The only way to have NIPSCO install a second meter is to have the zoning changed. When I asked why he didn't tell me that before I paid $460, he said he had never done the hookup plumbing for a new meter and didn't know the rules. The technician came out and removed his equipment but failed to restart the furnace and hotwater heater. We were without hot water for 3 days while the system was set up for the pressure test. I don't expect a licensed union plumber to know absolutely everything about plumbing, but I do expect a professional to know what they don't know, and make a few calls before charging me $460 to tell me I can't do what I want to do. Putting a tee fitting on a gas line isn't that hard. I called a professional because I wanted someone who knows what the code requirements are, or who has the ability to call and find out what the requirements are. I called Abe's because I use them for clearing sewer lines of tree roots and their service has always been outstanding. I will continue to call Abe's for roto-rooter jobs, but not for other plumbing jobs.

Called the company at 8:30 am and the technician was here to perform service at 10:30am. Price was quoted to me over the phone and was exactly the final cost. Service was extremely fast and the technician was very friendly and professional. Took the time to explain not only what he was doing, but the basics about my septic tank and proper care in between services, including the estimated date when next service will be due. I thought the price was extremely reasonable. Of note, I found this provider via Angie's List.

Abe's staff arrived on time, located the tank, dug it up, pumped out the tank, and filled in the hole within a half hour. At the end of the job they smoothed out the landscaping and restored the location to very good condition. These guys are very conscientious.
