One cleaned from the fireplace and the other went on the roof to check the chimney and cap. The men were thorough, professional and courteous, and provided many helpful recommendations, including an estimate to repair the trim and Chase cover on the chimney. We will likely give them more business in the spring when they repair and replace the chimney and cap.
Description of Work: We hadn't had our chimney swept for several years, and chose Chimney Sweeps of America after reading their glowing recommendations on Angie's List. The two men arrived about 20 minutes late (the only hitch in the whole experience) and spent about 30 minutes at our house.

The guys did a thorough cleaning job and got up on the roof not only to clean, but to inspect the condition of the chimney. They did notice some minor work that might need to be done eventually, but did not pressure us about doing it right away or having them do it. They also suggested removal of a large tree near the chimney that impedes airflow--something that we had been thinking about. The guys were polite, clean, and informative, as well as quite reasonable in price. We will definitely use them again and hopefully before the heating season begins, although we've already missed their July early bird special!

Very pleased with the cleanliness of the crew and with the job performed. Will continue to use CWA for my chimney-sweep needs in the future. They also did masonry work on the exterior of the chminey before we moved into the home; and we were extremely pleased with how well the new brick work matched the original.
Description of Work: CWA installed a new stainless flue liner to replace the cracked masonry original, which had been subject to a flue fire, and installed a new chimney-cap flue.

Chimney Sweeps of America conducted an initial cleaning and inspection of the chimney in a recently purchased home. After the initial cleaning they showed us the repairs they felt were needed and provided a bid. Their bid was within industry standards so contracted their services. We scheduled the repairs however they needed to postpone the appointment due to a backlog of work. They were punctual on the second appointment and completed the repairs with competence and professionalism. I will contact this company the next time we need to have the chimney serviced.

The whole crew was professional, informative, courteous, considerate, prompt, and provided excellent craftsmanship. Tim was very accommodating to fit our project into his busy schedule and took the time to complete the work to our satisfaction. He was sensitive to our desire to have the fireplace operational for the holiday and made sure to provide us with a working fireplace in a timely manner. I will be calling CSA in the future for all chimney inspection, maintenance and repair.
Description of Work: Our fireplace insert had rusted out due to water damage from a leaky cap. CSA came to our home, took pictures of the damage and explained the process necessary to repair the chimney. Tim Smith, owner, provided us with an estimate and alternatives for fireplace insert replacements. They had to remove the brick from the outside of the chimney to remove the firebox and clear everything out. Tim explained how the fireplace had been inadequately insulated and corrected the problem. The new insert was installed and was in working order for us to enjoy before the holidays. The brick replacement had to wait for warmer, drier weather and was completed in March 2011. We expected more of a noticeable area on the brick where it had been replaced, but Tim did an excellent job of replacing the bricks and mortar with very little noticeability. Due to the design of the firebox floor, we suffered some cracks. Tim returned, replaced the floor and modified the design to prevent further cracking at no extra charge. He also added a stainless steel backing to protect the back of the firebox from cracking.

Install was good Chimney fire after his visit and could have lost my home because of it.
Description of Work: Chimney fire two days after he ' worked ' on the chimney. Tim Smith installed a wood stove for us last year. He did a good job at a fair (but a little high) price about $2,000 - but the pipes were not in the easiest location. Tim was on time and cleaned up everything. In February, I called Tim back because the screen on the cap was clogging up after just a few months of use and the cap and pipes needed cleaning. Very slow to respond by phone (several days) and came out looked at it and agreed to come back the next week with to clean the pipes and replace the screen. Did not show up or call all week. So I called him back and had to leave a message that if he did not want to do the work no problem I would call someone else. I had another sweep stop by look at it and schedule a cleaning and screen replacement. The next day when I got home from work I noticed that the screen had been cleaned and all the junk from the cap was left on the driveway and the black pipes were all marked up. Looked like someone had taken channel-locks to them - just a mess to clean up. My wife was home all day and never heard him working. I never heard from him so I assumed that he had cleaned the pipes and screen or at least checked them. Two days later the inside of the pipe catches fire - sounds like a train - and at the bottom of the pipes the temp (outside of the pipe) got to 930 degrees. the pipes in that area were glowing red.We shut everything down and the chimney fire burned out. Luckly no damage. The other chimney sweep came out and cleaned a bunch of junk out of the pipes and left no mess for me to clean up. When I called Tim Smith he told me he had not cleaned the pipes (no kidding) and did not offer any explaination why not or even why he didn't even check the pipe since the cap was all junked up or why he left a mess for me to clean up. He never did send a bill for cleaning the cap.

Response from Chimney Sweeps of America LTD
First, I need to mention this is not a problem with any of the work we performed or any of the materials we used. It is a problem with work that had not yet been completed and the customer assumed it was completed. The chimney system we used is one of the best available. The pipes and installation are capable of withstanding chimney fires, as they did. Chimney fires in solid wood burning appliances are very common thus the reason for a system that can handle them. There is nothing wrong with our workmanship or the chimney system. That being said, we installed a stainless steel chimney system at the customers home. It was a very tricky installation on a very steep and dangerous roof, thus the higher than average price. A few months later we were contacted by the customer that his cap was plugged up. Yes, it did take a bit to get out there as I go down to a one man operation most of the time in the dead of winter. The day we arrived the roof was ice covered, we couldn't even get the van up his driveway. I said we would try the next week and hope the roof was clear, we discussed the days that he would be home as we needed to get inside to clean the chimney out. We drove by on Tuesday and the roof still had ice on it. We then were planning on Thursday but that day there were 40- 50 mph wind gusts and it was too dangerous to even attempt it. I received a call from the customer and he did say if I wasn't doing it he would call someone else. We went out the next day. I knocked on the door several times and no one answered. Even though no one was home, I thought we would at least clear the cap. In the pouring rain, we climbed on the roof, cleared the creosote from the cap and changed the screen to a larger screen size. We usually would blow the creosote off the roof and drive with a blower but with the rain we couldn't. We cleaned up what we could, again, in the pouring rain. Since we could not clean the flue without access to the inside of the house, we packed up our equipment and left. Unfortunately, the weather plays a huge factor in the winter as to whether or not we can complete or even attempt a job. In hindsight, I should have done nothing on this job and let the customer call and schedule an appointment to have his chimney cleaned, but I was trying to keep him happy and get what I could done for them. We did not charge him anything because we hadn't completed the job. As for the chimney fire. The fuel for a chimney fire is creosote build-up which is caused from improper burning, burning wet or green wood, or inadequate combustion (choking down of the stove). This is all handled by the operator/homeowner. Knowing I needed to gain access to the house and had not done so yet, he shouldn't have burned it until it was cleaned. I will admit we made a few mistakes on this job mainly in communication with the customer and trying to at least do part of the job that day, even though we couldn't do it all, but the customer needs to take responsibility for his actions and lack there of. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and was very happy working for this customer. I have been in business for 27 years and am always learning ways I can improve and this is another learning experience.

Mike was very professional and neat. He wore shoe covers so as to not soil our carpet and he was extremely helpful regarding several questions that I had. I was extremely pleased with his service. My only problem is that they are very busy this time of year and I had to wait 3 weeks to get an apptl. However the end result was excellent.
Description of Work: Mike from CSA swept and cleaned the stainless steel liner in my Chimney and then cleaned the transition piece from my chimney to my fireplace insert. He also did a great job cleaning the insert itself. We had a significant creosote buildup and he worked very hard to clean it. He also was very helpful with suggestions as to how to keep the creosote from building up in the future.

I contacted Chimney Sweeps of America to replace the damper in my living room fireplace. They had someone come out and give me an estimate for the work and then promptly scheduled a time for a representative to come over and install the new damper. Mike came out and assessed my fireplace and noticed that the current damper had just fallen off track and showed me how to close it. He then said that he could replace it if I wanted to, but that the current damper would work fine for the next couple of years. I thanked him for his honesty and said that I would stick with the current damper for the time being. I paid for the service call, and Mike left. Over the weekend, I tried closing the old damper and it fell of track and I was unsuccessful with getting it back on track. I called Chimney Sweeps of America to see if someone could come back out and install the new damper. Again, they were professional and prompt with getting someone out to install the new damper. This time Tim, the owner, came out to install the damper. Once the new damper was installed, Tim showed me how to operate the new damper as well as explained that he had cleaned the gas fireplace logs at no additional charge. I let him know how much I appreciated his hard work, and the wonderful service I had received from his company. I would definitely use his company again.
Description of Work: The damper in my fireplace needed to be replaced.
Very well, I have used Tim before, he is always responsive and professional. He even came back to touch up the paint (which I don't think he normally does) as I had the chimneys painted just three years ago after he did some prior work on my woodburning fireplace and chimney.
Description of Work: Cleaned woodburning fireplace. Repaired a few bricks. Replace flue in gas burning fireplace with a stainless steel liner. They also poured a new concrete crown and replace 10 to 15 bricks which were damaged on the chimney due to extreme moisture, most likely from furnace and water heater.

The workman did a thorough job of cleaning the chimneys and left my home just as he found it (dirty, but not his fault, mine). He worked efficiently and seemed to take a reasonable amount of time both with the inspections and the cleaning. I have used this company before and would use them again.
Description of Work: The worker cleaned two chimneys and inspected two others and determined that they did not require cleaning. The workman was knowledgeable, courteous and very helpful. I asked him to get an estimate for further work from his company and later received a written estimate for the work from the company. I have not yet decided whether or not to have the work done. I would like to get a few more estimates before I select a company to do the work. I was very pleased both with the work and the information I received from this company.

Overall, the job went well. Tim Smith, the owner, is also the person to do the work. He spent a fair amount of time with his estimate and explaining to me my options (I wasn't sure if I wanted to remove the chimney on the incinerator or keep it). And when he was working on the job, he was willing to answer additional questions, both about upkeep and how to deal with the brick on the fireplace. He and an assistant did the job in a timely manner; they came when they said they would, they got the job done in the amount of time Tim had estimated. I had to schedule this job around others (I had to have new gas line to the fireplace before, and was going to have the roof done after) and I appreciated that Tim was able to stick to the schedule. The only glitch was that a hole had been left in my roof (as part of attaching the scaffolding). It rained before the new roof was installed so there was leakage around the fireplace. But I called Tim and there was no fuss. He came, repaired the roof, and repainted the ceiling and all was fine. I also have to add that Tim provides an estimate for free. One company I called would not so a free estimate (and so lost my business). I had estimates from other companies as well, but was particularly interested in this company because: 1. no subcontractors and the person who did the estimate would be doing the work 2. Tim's willingness to answer questions.
Description of Work: I had three things done: remove one chimney down to the roof line, rebuild another chimney up from roof line (including a new liner and top sealing damper) which has a new gas log set installed (and removing the old one)

I secured several cost estimates from companies appearing in Angie's List including one from Chimney Sweeps. Tim Smith, the owner, estimated the cost of repair, which was very reasonable. They arrived on time, completed the work within two or three hours and cleaned up nicely afterwards. One more thing, about a month after the work was completed, Mr. Smith returned to make sure the new concrete had set properly and to place additional caulking where needed. I thought doing this was above the normal call of duty and impressed me very much.
Description of Work: The top flue tile was cracked and chipping. To replace, it required that the chimney crown also be replaced. In the process of doing this work, I had them replace the old chimney cap and caulk any suspicious looking areas they might see.

The experience went pretty well. They were the last ones to give us an estimate. We had the previous estimates to compare their estimate with. Everything went smoothly, fast, thorough and well done.
Description of Work: A leak around our chimney resulted in water leaking out of the living room ceiling. We have Chimney Sweeps of American every year for a check of our wood stove insert/chimney before we have our first fire of the season. We hadn't had them out yet, but called on an emergency basis because of the leak. They came out soon after calling them, told us the range of possible causes and checked the chimney/flashing/cap, etc. They not only cleaned the chimney but they waterproofed the entire stone chimney, repaired the cap, and the price was very reasonable. We are very pleased with their services and will continue to use them.
