Mr. Martin's price was reasonable, he seemed knowledgable, and we decided to choose him over other bidders. Unfortunately, he asked for 50% downpayment on the first day, with job to begin in 2-3 weeks after he has ordered materials. Our own experience and all advice on downpayment that one can on internet, including Angie's List (http://www.angieslist.com/articles/ask-angie-what-reasonable-down-payment-contractor.htm), and Attorney General of Indiana (http://www.indianaconsumer.com/consumer_guide/home_improvement.asp), warn against paying more than 1/3 upfront, the recommended schedule being 25% upfront and then partial payments until the job is done. Here is an excerpt from Angie's advice : "A reputable and established contractor should have the wherewithal to purchase enough materials to get the job started without relying on your down payment." I do not know whether Mr. Martin insisted on 50%. He dismissed our offer to justify the need for this amount if it was to cover supply costs. He simply wanted us to blindly trust him while (in the best case) he showed an obvious mistrust for potential clients. We found this unreasonable and unprofessional. Irrational too: he has lost quite a bit of potential business with us and our friends.
Description of Work: The job was a siding replacement, but it was not performed.

Response from Martin's Custom Remodeling
I told the member that the money down was for materials and that I had been burned before by coming out of pocket for materials and then not able to collect. I also told him that I had been doing this for 38 years and wasn't changing the way I did business just for him. In this business there has to be a certain amount of trust on both sides...client hoping that everything goes as said by contractor AND the contractor has to have the trust that the client will pay at the end. There must have been a lack of trust somewhere and sorry he felt that way. And the reason work wouldn't start for 2-3 weeks is because it was a speical order siding. If I paid for it and they changed their minds..I couldn't return it and would be stuck with the materials. I have never had problems from anyone else in get 50% down. Sorry things didn't go his way. I might add that 2 weeks later he called back and wanted me to do the job and would pay the 50% down and give me a $300 bonus. I declined.

Work went very well; we adjusted the plan on the light and they adapted quickly and you cannot tell anything was changed. Workers were courteous and pleasant, while professional.Overall, a positive experience.
Description of Work: Mike and his crew replaced a sliding glass door and moved an exterior light fixture for me. Both were well done. My only slightly negative comments areas follows: 1) I waited a long time for them to get to me and I did have to follow up to get a date set for the work- while slightly annoying, I think this just indicates a small business that is very busy. Once they were here, they were fast and efficient. 2) Clean up was not as thorough as it could have been, but still a minor complaint. There is no question that I would hire them again without hesitation.

I contacted Martin's Custom Remodeling based on reviews on Angie's list. I scheduled an appointment for a few days later. The day of the appointment came, and nobody showed up. I wanted for more than an hour, then contacted the owner to ask if I had the date wrong. I did not. He responded that something had come up at another job that prevented him from coming to my scheduled appointment. I understand when things come up and you have to be late or reschedule, but I was not contacted in any way or made aware that nobody was coming. I just sat at my house and waited for someone who never showed up. He offered to come the next day, but I was busy and said that I could reschedule for Monday. He never responded to that message so I've decided to move on to someone else.
Description of Work: Did not show up.

Very personable gentleman. We have an old house that had some problems with floors sagging under the dining room and the front sleeping porch sagged pretty much everywhere. Mike brought in his crew, poured pads for the piers that he put in, put them in under the dining room and the porch. The two wobbly areas that he worked on are now as solid as rock. He finished more quickly than the estimated time. He had mentioned that the foundation needed tuck-pointing (and I agreed) so in the left over time he did the tuck-pointing at no additional cost. I did not address the 'punctuality' in the ratings because on a daily basis that was up to him since I was at work. Overall, punctuality had to have been good or he wouldn't have finished ahead of schedule. Anticipate having the bathroom worked on within the next year and he will be the first one I call to see if he's available.
Description of Work: Digging in hardpack clay, putting in foundation pads for piers to support old floors (house over 100 yrs old) Replace some floor joists on porch that had been damaged by termites at some point. Reinforced porch joists with cross members as the original joists had been run lengthwise and were not terribly steady.

Martin's Custom Remodeling came and seemed to fix our leaking shower. We don't use the shower often but noticed that there was a leak. He took the shower doors off and another piece that was on the wall. He thought that the water was leaking through the old shower doors. He took the old shower doors off, replaced the piece on the wall as well as the faucet and shower head and recaulked. When we started using the shower again, we noticed a change in color on the ceiling on the floor below our shower. We didn't think it could have water leaking from the shower onto the ceiling but now the discolor is even worse, bubbling has started and now it is dripping whenever the shower is in use. He fixed the ceiling where it was wet before but now it is messed up again. As far as I know, there was no investigation to see if there was a leak in the pipes for the shower.

I do kind of remember this job....although it's been over a year ago and this is the first I've heard of anything. The member had a leak and stained the lower floor ceiling. They thought it might be the drain or the water pipes were leaking. If the water pipes were leaking, being under pressure, there would always be water leaking. So it looked like there was a leak around the door. I repaired that and told them if it still leaked it was proably in the drain and that that would be costly to try to repair. ( have to remove shower base). So we put in new faucets and repaired wall & door. If I had know that the leak was still there I would haved looked at it if call. I have heard nothing from the member, until now.

Mike came on a monday, gave an estimate, and said he would call the day before he comes. He called on Monday the next week and came Tuesday the next day. Got the window done, came back the next day and put in the hand rail. He was right on his estimate. Will have Mike do more work for me when I need it.

I absolutely could not be any happier! His price was extrememly reasonable, his craftsmanship is excellent, he stayed on-budget, and he completed the project on schedule. I would most definately recommend him to anyone!
Description of Work: Mike ripped out and removed an existing deck in poor condition, poured a new cement floor , and built a 10' x 18' 3-season room complete with energy-efficient combination screen/storm windows, sliding glass doors, a second entrance with a storm door, and two large skylights. He wired two electrical outlets and installed a ceiling fan, and he replaced my damaged cedar siding (so well you can't even see the seam).. The sunroom can be accessed from both a sunken living room and the master bedroom, so to compensate for the height differential of the two entries, he built an interiour "porch" off the master bedroom with a spindle railing and steps down into the main level of the sunroom. My mother has Parkinson's and he used extreme care measuring the initial height of the steps, then remaking them to accommodate her needs. And when he was finished, he removed every last scrap of trash and debris. The finished product is truly the room of my dreams! . I will gladly provide pictures to anyone who requests them.

Mike came out and took a look at the job and gave us an estimate. He was very detailed and had seen this type of problem before. He explained what the job would take and gave an estimate of when he would be available to start the job. On that day he did a very fast and excellent job - He removed the old and fixed the seal and replaced/repaired the flooring. Would definitely use Mike again!
Description of Work: There was a leaking toilet in our half-bath that had water under the laminate floor. Needed the floor removed and cleaned up and the leaking seal replaced.

We talked through emails at first then he came to our home and gave took measurements and sent an estimate within a week. It took us awhile for both our calendars to clear b/f he started but the actual work started on Oct 17 and took 5 1/2 days to complete. His ceramic tiling was good but there are some parts of the mosaic/glass tile and molding that aren't quite as I feel they should be. For the 1st day he had a helper with the demolition of the bathroom and then on another day he had another helper to help with the painting and tile - cutting. Overall he did a good job and it looks nice but my husband and I did feel he did cut some corners. I do have to say though that this was our 1st experience dealing with an interior contractor and so haven't had a lot of experience. I was very pleased that he was willing to meet me at Lowe's to order and look at materials -- I appreciated the help. He even found a better choice for the mosaic glass tile than I had picked out. We hope to do a minor kitchen remodel in the future and I would hire Mike again.
Description of Work: Mike gave us an estimate for a bathroom remodel. His quote was exact except for $27.00 in materials he had to pick up Our remodel included tiling of walls, (both ceramic and glass tile), painting above the tiles, installation of medicine cabinet, sink/vanity, and the plumbing, electrical that those involved. He said the work would be done in 4 days but it took 5 1/2.

First I'd like to say that I enjoyed working for the Member. But , I'm not for sure what corners I might have 'cut'? The walls started with a scroll 1/4" piece and then 3 rows of mossica tile then another 1/4" scroll. I told Member that these scroll pieces & the mossica would be hard to clean of the grout. I did the best I could to clean them , even using a small screwdriver to get in the cracks. I'm sorry if there was something they didn't like, but got to say....this is the first I heard of anything. I met Member at her house,at Lowes, plus 9 e-mails dealing with questions before I even started. But I would work for them again if needed.

Martin's Custom Remodeling rescued us from a remodeling nightmare! Our previous contractor [which we had used in the past] left in the middle of a hired job for what my husband and I assumed was too much for him to handle. The contractor would NOT return calls/texts/e-mails. We were left with 9 areas throughout our home with no electricity. One electrical box cut into the header had over 9+ wires in it... NOT Code! The "new" opening for the electrical boxes were not the same size or leveled evenly on the wall. After months and months of no communication or resolve, I joined Angie's List and found Mike. From the get-go, Mike made a good impression. He responded within in hour or two to my e-mail and even waived his "free estimate" fee for being out of area. Mike was excellent to work with and very professional. Considering what Mike and his crew had to do with our electrical nightmare, our actual bill was not too far off his estimate. Well worth the price considering we now have electrical wires wired down to our basement, within Code, and all lights in our house working! We are so impressed with Mike's work, prices, cleanliness, and attention to detail that we have already asked that he bid another job for us. Martin's Custom Remodeling gets nothing buy high marks from these satisfied customers!
Description of Work: Martin's Custom Remodeling "redid" a wall removal/opening job from our kitchen to the family room that has been started by a previous contractor. This job included installing a 2x8 header and removing the existing one, redoing the entire electrical within the wall which involved trouble shooting the existing wires [we had 9 different areas of our house that were left without electricity from the previous contractor] and finish work by evening off the kitchen floor with ceramic tiles.

We hired Mike (Martin's construction) after the reviews on this list. We are very pleased with his work. He gave us an estimate with a design and the time when he would be available to start. All was done very professionally. The job was done very well, on time and at a reasonable price. He was interacting with us all the time and provided good ideas. We were so pleased that we asked him to do other things in the house that we had been postponing because we could not find an acceptable contractor. When we have another job in the house, we will hire him again.

Mr. Martin came to the house more than once to discuss the job. He then was able to begin the work as soon as the doors were delivered and arrived every weekday at the stated time and worked all day until the job was complete. He called when he realized the front door was too short and made suggestions and listen to my ideas. The resulting solution looks like it was suppose to be that way. He kept the job site and house as clean as possible and never left us with a difficult situation such as an opening with no door overnight or over the weekend. Mr. Martin pays attention to detail and we couldn't be happier with the results.
Description of Work: Replaced all five exterior doors including repairing drywall and painting. Enlarged one opening for new door that was bigger than the old door. Needed to adjust for one door that was shorter than the required. Also painted the door between the house and garage.

Mike started on a Monday morning (on a very hot day in July). He had two guys digging the hole when I left. When I returned on Thursday, 4 days later, the window was finished and looked great. He had to buy a couple of bricks to match the 1950's bricks on the outside and the wood paneling inside the basement had to be cut and new trim added around the window. I painted the outside of the window myself and caulked a little where he told me it should be done. I also bought the stain/varnish to cover the new pieces of trim on the inside. The day he opened the hole in the wall he got the window unit in so it was not left open overnight. He was quick and efficient and very easy to work with. I was extremely pleased with the job. We haven't landscaped around the window well yet, but he left a small pile of dirt for us to fill in after the ground around the well settles. His price was much lower than the previous quote I had gotten from another builder. We didn't even have much mess inside the house to clean up. He did a great job at a great price! I had absolutely no complaints!
Description of Work: We needed to have an egress window installed in a basement bedroom to provide emergency escape access for the occupant of that bedroom. The bedroom already had a small basement window. The job required cutting out a larger opening in the concrete block basement wall, excavating an area right outside the window for the window well, installing an egress window unit and window well, and finishing the brick on the outside and the wood paneling on the inside.

These are our go-to guys for fixing up our home and they certainly didn't disappoint this time. In fact, after all of their work on the house (kitchen, bathroom, main beam, exterior paint, masonry) this was their best. Everyone in the neighborhood has commented about how much they like the work. Mike is always willing to work within our pretty tight budget, to make suggestions, and to be flexible as the project evolves. He also accepted PayPal. The only few things that very minorly detracted: They initially used play sand to fill the paver spaces, which washed right out. They corrected the mistake and used the polymeric sand that is required. They set-up the paver saw (water) in front of a window on the front of the house. The splatter dried and hardened. They cleaned it up. Mike drew up a contract using 9x9in pavers when we had already discussed using 3x6in pavers. At the end of the job he justly charged more for this and other additions we had requested but I wish he would have included this in the original contract. Considering he charged less than 10% extra for this and the other things we requested after the project started, it is obviously not a big deal. Otherwise, the project went great and on the last day Mike reiterated his guarantee of the work. We highly recommend this company and are considering taking them with us if we ever move out of the area!
Description of Work: Built ~3ft retaining walls flanking a stairway. Backfilled the area. Tore out concrete front patio and sidewalk. Set gravel base and laid new basket weave paver sidewalk and patio, filling cracks with sand. Installed drain in sidewalk to channel water through a spout instead of through my flower beds or into the foundation. Patched existing concrete stairs in front and back of the house.

Mike was very efficient! Although my husband changed his mind several times on the location of the electrical and cable outlets, Mike continued to adjust to ensure everything worked together. The remodeling area was clean and neat everyday -- made the rest of my house look messy! We appreciate everything Mike did and will hire him for work again soon. He is responsible, caring and dedicated. Good man doing good work.
Description of Work: Mike was great! He walk through the room, discussed what we wanted and helped us understand the limitations or challenges. We discussed ducts needing to be rerun to accomplish our goal of a built in cabinet. We asked him to add a colonial fireplace mantel, replace a closet and exterior door, build a custom cabinet into a former closet, trim out the room, three doorways, window and electrical wiring behind the fireplace for a flat panel. This is the first of several projects we have and he helped us prioritize each.Wish we would have had him finish with staining, painting the project. Our fault for not including that on the estimate.

I've used him so much and I can't remember which job is which. The job went well. I think he was learning on some of the brick work and because we have an older house, it had different mortars than newer houses do so some of it was a little ex-terminal but by the end he was a pro. He is good. I've left a feedback about him before. I would use him again in the future. He would be here in spring to do some work.

He was prompt, on time, courteous, and professional in his work. Definitely a hard worker, and he knows his stuff! We met at Menards to chose materials together, and he knew which pieces could be cleaned up and re-purposed (a mirror and a relatively new faucet) to help cut down on costs, but encouraged us on reliable product lines where it could make a difference in performance and reliability. This was MUCH appreciated. His assistants were not reliable, but Mike was at the site every day until finish. If something unexpected came up, as is typical in older homes, Mike was quick to contact us, let us know what he tried, what needs to be done, and to get quick input before carrying on, but would still work on other aspects of the job in the mean time. For cost savings, we wanted to finish a few details (paint, quarter round installation, towel bar/toilet roll install, etc...) ourselves. I can't speak to his finishing details due to this, which was OUR choice and no reflection on Mike. We found all reviews on Angie's List to be accurate and fair. He's a great, hard worker at a great price, but plan to chat for awhile. We enjoy stimulating conversation with Mike. After very careful inspection, I can say the plumbing was a weak point for him, but he came out and repaired most items free of charge. (Copper lines for a dish washer, reversed hot and cold in shower, did not repair leak in a faucet he reinstalled, and did not secure drain line from garbage disposal to the sink drain line.) But otherwise his work was careful, artfully completed, and he was very tidy. We will need to do very little -if any- prep to finish details. We can't wait to enjoy the work in the new year. Thanks, Mike!!
Description of Work: We asked him to do a complete gut of two bathrooms, including flooring, and to rehang some kitchen cabinets that were improperly hung from a previous contractor.

Response from Martin's Custom Remodeling
First I'd like to say I think that the Member's were just great & I enjoyed working for them. But in defense of my plumbing lets not forget that I installed shut offs & water lines to the upstairs shower and a new drain. I also installed water lines & drain on the vanity. Down stairs I installed water lines & drain to the sink ( had a small water leak that was fixed right away) And in the kitchen; I ran water lines, drain, installed disposal, & dish washer. I also had to reconnect the water lines in basemenrt because they had been cut. When I talked to Mr. Member he told me off 2 problems, the dishwasher line & the shower seemed like the water lines were reversed. I came over the next day and changed a copper water line on the dishwasher ( I always run copper lines), but they prefered a flexable one which I installed. The shower justed needed the internal part reversed to work properly. Both fixes took less then an hour to complete. As far as the leaky faucet..it was a used faucet saved from the upstairs bath. If it leaked, it had to have been leaking before. The drain under the sink had been tested and there were no leaks. BUT...I may have knocked something loose when I was inside cabinet cutting the dishwasher's water line to hook up the flex line. That would have been my mistake, and I apologize for that. So I feel all in all I did a very good job of the plumbing work there. As I said before I enjoyed the Colby's and look forward to doing more work for them. TY

We removed the carpet and pad and prepped the floor so he could put down the floor. I didn?t interact with him much but I love the work he did and he was always on time. They are doing a great job. We use them all the time. He is very accommodating. He listens to what you want instead of trying to put his thoughts on to you. He is very clean and very neat. He comes on time. He supervises the work men he has. It has been a very good experience all the way. We have used him for many, many, many jobs. In fact, he is already lined up to do some more things.
Description of Work: They finished 2 jobs for us this summer. In July they stained our house. He then refinished the front door and most recently they installed some bamboo fencing for us in the back.

Mike does a great job at very good prices. He is happy to work with the customer to cut costs (we do the cosmetic stuff, he does the heavy lifting) and is very knowledgeable about all kinds of things (though if you get him started on topics outside of construction, prepare to have a long conversation!). Though there are occasionally things he does (e.g. off-white outlets instead of white) that we find a little annoying, we are generally pleased with his work. We had a few issues with his plumbing, though if something is not done right, he will come back until it is satisfactory. He removed the main beam of our house while we were out of town and we came back to find a much more solid house and not a single new crack in the plaster. For a hundred year old house, that's saying a lot about his carefulness. My husband's and my first house is a "fixer-upper" and I think we would be bankrupt or the house would have collapsed on us without Mike's services. He's even testified in a lawsuit on our behalf. Our dog even loves him (because he brings treats!). If you have any projects around the house, he will get them done!
Description of Work: We've had Mike do a ton of things around our house. Because of him we have a new kitchen, dining room ceiling, upstairs bathroom, and main beam. The kitchen required all new joists, new subfloor with concrete board, new plumbing lines, a new ceiling, new ventilation, moved electrical, new windows, and hanging cabinets. The bathroom required new joists and a new subfloor with concrete board, new drywall, moved plumbing, moved electrical, and installation of all new fixtures. He had to jack the house up and cut out one of our main beams.

I call them if I have any remodeling to do. He advised me about what we need to do and I went out and bought and he and his crew installed it. He came back and finished up the painting and that was a door and a lower level. He has also done kitchen remodeling and those are the things that he does. We had a roof leak and he found it, fixed it and had to remodel the office which was done marvelously. I can?t give you high enough claims for him and he has reasonable prices which is important. Anyone that hires him is going to get good service.
Description of Work: I used Martin’s Remodeling over the last several years they did several projects. The last time I used them was last spring and I am about to call them again.
