Description of Work: I hired Adams to do a deck design and it was a bargain but... It was incomplete in my opinion. No lumber list of design detail was included so it was far from a construction drawing. I realize the bargain is designed to get you to use them to build but if you offer a design, it should be a complete design or your offer should say it is a very limited line drawing. Not much detail for $49 and that would be more fair. I believe they are very professional and nice to deal with. | |john...

Response from Adams Construction Services Inc
We did provide a scaled drawing/design for a deck project for this member as part of the Angie's List Big Deal promotion. We understand the cost for this is $49 paid through Angie's List and our company did not request or receive any additional compensation so I am uncertain why the stated cost is listed at $400.00. The Big Deal promotion calls for a design and does not mention anything about a lumber list. A design typically does not include a lumber list as the builder and supplier of any project are ultimately responsible for the structure's code compliance and material suitability for the application. As providing a design through this service does not guarantee that, if built, the project would be built by us we do not provide a lumber list. At the time that we have a commitment from someone for a project to be built we would then develop a lumber list. The lumber suppliers we use will develop a lumber list off of any plan on a complimentary basis to anyone looking to build a project. We wish this member good luck with his project.

Description of Work: Adams Construction Services provided a detailed estimate and drawings for a covered deck project. We have not decided on whether or not we will do the project, but the drawings and line by line estimate are a great tool for us, whether we hire ACS or perform the work ourselves. The drawings were an Angie's List special offer.

Response from Adams Construction Services Inc
Our company sent a proposal for the work requested on 4/11/13. Project was to include the removal of an existing deck and constructing a new treated lumber deck with a pergola. The member responded on 4/12/13 indicating that she would review the quote and follow up with us. On 4/22/13 she responded via email indicating she was ready to move forward but with some changes including adding curved stairs and using composite decking instead of treated lumber decking. Our salesperson responded via telephone and spoke with the member explaining that these changes would significantly increase the investment (over double the original amount) required for the project. The member stated that she did not wish to pursue the project any further.

Decided upon Adams Construction based on his credentials and the good reference of 4 other people where he did similar work. A contract was drawn up and after exchange of several emails and visits to office it was settled and deposit applied. Price appeared to be about 5% higher than competitors but accepted contract hopping for a turnkey job. Schedule set up on a flow sheet to work around my schedule so I could be present during the work. After job completed I would have to say that I am not happy with Mr. Adams choice of tile sub-contractor, due to tiles not flush with each other on floor and walls and plumbing fixtures for shower were not installed in center of shower wall, so the tile had to be torn out and fixtures moved, then re-tiled, so now we are stuck with it. After shower base warms up from hot water, it pops when moving around in shower, therefore again the tile contractors did not install base correctly, so now we are stuck with it. Mr. Adams never sent me a critique sheet or satisfaction survey to see what could have been done better. I would suggest a thorough check of sub-contractors be accomplished before proceeding with any work.
Description of Work: Remodel master bathroom: Remove tub and install porcelain tiled walking shower with shower door. Replace vanity and fixtures. Replace tile floor with porcelain tile. Replace hot & cold water lines in bathroom. Obtain Plumbing and Building Permits.

I really, really like them. They were very professional. They were competitively priced and the quality of work was high. They came out and explained things a lot more. The other people I tried to get to come out, they just wanted to do things their own way. They listened to us and did exactly what I wanted. They were reasonable priced too. I would highly recommend them. I was going have them finish my basement but I got moving.

Description of Work: By far Tad was one of the most professional people we meet with. We even had people come out look over everything but than never got back with us. Tad called before his scheduled appointment to meet with us. He arrived on time and spent more time with us then anyone else. He give us some great ideas too. The only problem was and I even hate writing this but he was more than 3 times expensive than anyone else. When you are talking about a $50 to $60 thousand dollar job and he was more than 3 times that, it is way too much for me to justify.

Response from Adams Construction Services Inc
I did visit this site and met with the Members regarding extensive work to their home including an addition on the front with with full remodeling of the adjacent space in the existing home (affected areas included the kitchen & master bath), construction of a detached garage, conversion of existing attached garage space to living space and the addition of a bathroom in the basement (no ground rough-in plumbing with cutting of the concrete floor to be necessary). I measured the various spaces and discussed with the Members the need for completing design work to determine their needs for the spaces and to develop an accurate scope of work as no plans had been completed at the time. We scheduled the design meeting and discussed the cost of the design, which was to be credited back to them if we were hired for the projects. The design meeting was cancelled and we were notified that they were planning to pursue the project with others. I did give them "ball park" numbers on the spot that are commensurate with costs our clients have paid recently for similar projects and with the costs published in Remodeling Magazine's 2011- 2012 Cost vs. Value report for Louisville and the East South Central Region. I offered these "ball park" numbers as a courtesy on the spot during the first meeting and do this often for potential clients for feasibility and planning to minimize wasted time for both parties. When giving "ball park" numbers I am always conservative and deliver numbers in a range that leaves little risk for an actual, detailed proposal coming in higher. No design work or detailed proposal with selections/allowances was prepared for the Members. I do not know the names or types of other contractors with whom they were discussing the projects. I enjoyed visiting with the Member and wish them good luck with their projects.

Thad Adams came out to give us an estimate on the project. It took about a week to get the estimate, Scheduling the installation date was set about 4 wks later. That was when they were available next. We were not in a hurry so it worked out fine. The work took about 4-5 days. We had them come out another day to touch up some caulking. They were very quick to respond to our call. Julie in the office answered my questions quickly or found out the answers and got back to me quickly. The guys that came to do the project were all very nice and friendly and did an excellent job. I have no complaints!!

I found Adam's Construction at the Louisville Home & Garden show in March. Thad Adams, the owner, was very easy to talk to and very professional; really seemed liked he cared about the project I was planning in my head. I wanted to take at a wall between my current living room and kitchen to expand the area; install new laminate flooring, add a new kitchen island, new pendant lighting, new counter tops and a new kitchen sink. Mr. Adams made an appointment to give me an estimate about 3 weeks later. We signed the contract on April 5; his men started the project on April 25th and the job was complete on May 10th. My project was not a super large job, but not a small job by any means. We had a deadline we were working against due to a family member coming to stay with us for a month at the end of May. Mr. Adams committed to meeting my deadline and assured me the job would be complete by the middle of May. They did indeed meet and beat the deadline. All of Adam's employee's were so nice and very professional. The project manager, Shane,, had great communication skills and kept the project moving along. He kept me informed every step of the way. The men on the project team did such a beautiful job and even cleaned up each day after themselves; so as not to leave me in a mess. I highly recommend this company to anyone who has any kind of remodeling work to be done. My new room is so beautiful. We are ecstatic with the work and look forward to using our new area for many years to come. I feel like I've moved to a new home. Thank you Adam's Construction, for a job very well done!

Thad was here for a couple hours taking detailed measurements, pictures and notes. He was extremely thorough in his assessment of what I have now and what I wanted to do (adding 2-story, 480 sq. ft). Of all the contractors I invited out for bids, Thad's was the most detailed - I was very impressed.
Description of Work: I haven't contracted with Adams Construction Services - yet. Thad came out and looked over the property, listened to what I wanted, and he made several suggestions. He arrived on time and was very professional in his assessment and with his estimate. I am still gathering bids and started the loan application process, but Adams is at the top of the list for follow-up once loan is in place.

AC’s level of professionalism from beginning to end was impressive (timeliness, presentation of the quote, no mess left behind). While this cost us more than we expected, we’re quite happy with the job itself.
Description of Work: My husband and I bought our house in June 2011. One of needed repairs found in the inspection was the replacement of a support pole (which was nearly rusted through) in the crawlspace (accessible through the basement) of our house. Adams Construction placed a new layer of concrete down to support the pole and then replaced the pole itself. This was a 2 day job.

Since I went with another contractor for the job there are no details to pass along.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate from Adams for remodeling a room in my basement following spring flooding. The estimate requirements included removing existing paneling, moving 2 wall sections to expand the size of the room, replacing plates and studs with pressure treated lumber, painting an exterior concrete wall with waterproofing paint, replacing a ceiling flourescent light with canister lights, putting up drywall on walls and ceilings, and putting down decorative concrete flooring. John Spitznagel was the estimator. John was extremely professional, showing up on time for the appointment and being prepared with the tools necessary to get good measurement. He offered great suggestions for the job and convinced me that he was not only knowledgeable about estimating but about design also. John told me that it would take several weeks before he could get an estimate to me because of the volume of work generated by the storms and flooding. I told him that I really appreciated his candor and honesty and that the time for receipt of the estimate was fine with me. Even though I selected another local contractor for the job, I would definitely contact Adams in the future and request John as the estimator. There was only about $1500 difference in the estimates and all reflected quality consideration of the work to be done. I went with the other contractor primarily because there was so little difference in the estimates but the selected contractor is local to Oldham county.

We had two or three estimates before we decided on the Adams Company. We were impressed from the start with Mr. Adams' professionalism in his estimation process. He stood out from all the rest in the questions he asked and his thoroughness. We were also favorably impressed with the workers who came to our home. The Adams Co was not the lowest bidder for the work, but we believed it was a fair price. We hired them for their professionalism and perceived expertise. We are very satisfied with the result and will probably hire them again when the need arises.
Description of Work: Replaced 4 columns supporting the front porch, including pick up and delivery of columns we selected, installing columns, caulking & painting to match our color scheme. Also painted exterior windows, door frames and porch ceilings. Work included preparation, scraping, caulking and applying 2 coats of paint. All waste materials were removed and the site was left clean and neat.

When I purchased my home in Mar 09, the basement was an unfinished walkout but with plumbing rough ins. I had some specific ideas of what I wanted to do and after interviewing several companies and soliciting many bids, I chose Adams Construction. All references gave good reviews and upon selecting Adam's, I worked directly with John Spitznagle. John was very friendly, attentive and eager to have the project satisfy my needs. After discussing the possibilities of the space, we went with my original plans. I did not want a "basement" feel but feel more integrated with the house as "living" space. The basement project included adding a full bath, a bar with back sink and some simple recessed cabinetry. Working with Adams This is my first major home renovation and so I am very inexperienced. I rate the core construction as first rate but some of the finish work could have been more detailed. I do have to say that if considering Adam's Construction, you must review all the work at each stage to confirm that there has been no lack of communication in design or work. But, having spoken with friends and relatives about other contractors they have used, I would say that John/Adam's were very communicative while the project was ongoing. John and I would touch base every few days to discuss the upcoming steps. There were a couple of issues concerning communication of plans/construction internally to Adam's (whether to subcontractors or employees). One wall was not extended as far as originally drawn (but minor as it actually makes a hall larger). Another example of internal communication issue was the carpet installation. The main basement area is a large open space. Carpet was specially ordered to go through this open space and needed to be oriented/installed to reduced seems. However, the carpet installaiton team either did not know or ignored the direction on the carpet orientation and installed the carpet incorrecly. It is those internal communications that required I review the job site at each point to confirm that what John and I discussed made it to the actual workers. I do have to say that any item I brought up was addressed by John and Adam's immediately. They made sure I was satisfied. (In the end, I did have to accept the carpet mis-orientation though). Looking back now, there are a few things in the design (placement of doors, selection of bar counters/cabinets), that required changes to my initial plans. Although constrained by the bid requirements, I wish I had chosen or been offered more creative alternatives to address unforeseen design issues. Or those design issues should have been seen before construction began. Time and Cost My project involved a refinance of my mortgage which had very stringent requirements for documentation, how long the project could last and a limited payment schedule. The project had to be completed within 60 days of start, with only a 10% upfront payment, and complete third party appraisals before and after the project. Adams Construction had no problem with the terms my bank required where other contractors expressed concerns. When I solicited bids, I was concerned about "low ball" bids from non-professional companies who would bid low to get the job and then return requiring more money. While Adams Construction was not the abolute lowest bid, they were nearer the lower end than some of the bids I received (60-80k from others). I must say that I cannot see how other companies could have charged 30-50k more and given much better quality. I feel I got a quality construction project without overspending for it. There were no cost differences from the bid to the final cost other than minor changes I made that increased the cost. I did not necessarily select the highest quality finish items (as it is a basement) but I do think I got the quality of products and services I paid for if not better. I do have to comment that the crew from Adams were willing to work whatever schedules (weekends, evenings) to meet the projects deadlines. The job was completed within 6 weeks which was well within the time limits in the contract. I had no problems getting in touch with Adams/John for project updates. Overall, I would highly recommend Adams Construction for a project, would consider them for any future project and have recommended them to family. Just make sure you check that all the details are being followed.
Description of Work: The project was a complete basement finish with an additional bath (on previously added rough ins) from an unfinished space. The project included initial framing, dry walling walls and ceiling, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, carpet installation, and painting and finishing. All work was interior work; no exterior walls were penetrated. Plumbing, electrical and HVAC went off exising systems.

I worked with them to plan a remodel of my upstairs bathroom and bedroom. They charged me a $750 fee to do the design work, which I paid. I was told that this fee would be rolled into the cost of the construction after they began work. Despite an INCREDIBLE lack of communication on their part (I had to physically stop by the office twice to even get them to speak with me), I worked with them and received the initial estimates. They were more than I expected and I had to negotiate with them to do the work in phases. We were in the middle of this process when they stopped communicating with me outright. Despite promises to email me and leaving "a note right here on my blotter" to call me in a week, I heard nothing. They appear to be a very professional company, but if they're too busy or don't consider you an important enough bid, you won't hear from them. It's a family run business and plenty of people review their work as top notch. However, their communication is awful, and while I'm sure they do quality work, be prepared to drag them every step of the way. *edit as of 06/21/11* After talking with Thad a few months ago, we came to an agreement that there were misunderstandings on both my part and Adams' regarding our communication. I came upon some financial issues in January and determined I had to sell my house, so I called them again to discuss repair of what I thought was minor mold or mildew damage in the office of my home. After they came in and looked into things a little more thoroughly, it was determined that the previous owner had a balcony installed that was not inspected or brought to code. The weather had wicked moisture into the side of the house due to bad flashing and had completely rotted an entire wall of my lower floor including the studs. Thad and the Adams' team was very professional and understanding of my financial needs when they helped me find a plan to get the wall repaired and the balcony removed so that I could begin getting my home ready for sale. They rebuilt the wall entirely, kept the interior dirt to a minimum, and took great lengths to make sure that their workers didn't scuff the floor, make messes carrying equipment, or otherwise have much effect on the other rooms of the house while they were working. Communication throughout the process was much more organized than before and kept me up to date with what stage of the process we were in and whether they needed additional information from me. After things were completed, the wall and upstairs looked brand new. The construction was very well done, and they also custom made a doorbell mount and fixed some door trim as requested to help me get ready for the sale. They cost a little more than competitors (hence the B rating) but they do things RIGHT. They only build things to code and cut no corners. You can find someone to do things cheaper, but as my balcony will attest, cheaper is not always the best option. I'd pay them extra anytime to make sure I had no worries about the future safety of my home. They're one of the best companies I've ever had the pleasure of working with and would recommend them in a heartbeat. In fact, they're already working on another project for me now!
Description of Work: Designed renovation of upstairs bedroom and bath as well as deck remodeling, removal and repair of improperly installed balcony, and other minor household repairs. *edit as of 06/21/2011* Performed mildew and mold damage repairs and restructuring as well as removal of faultily installed balcony for upstairs portion. Reinstallation of new matching trim and windows as well as several minor repairs to prepare home for sale.

Response from Adams Construction Services Inc
Adams Construction Services, Inc. did provide design services for the renovation of the second floor and the rear deck area of this member’s home. The cost for this service to the member was $750.00 which he paid. The initial designs, along with two sets of revisions, were provided to the member. A total of three (3) site visits were made by Adams Construction Services, Inc. staff to facilitate the design and proposals for the projects. The third site meeting also included staff from the electrical, plumbing and HVAC contractors. An initial proposal was developed and provided to the member, with two subsequent revised proposals provided to the member. During this process, financing was discussed and we understood that the member was pre-approved and actively pursuing financing with a lender of his choosing. Adams Construction Services, Inc. never agreed to provide or facilitate financing for the projects. We have record of two visits by the member to our showroom, one scheduled in early October 2010 and one unscheduled in early November 2010. During the unscheduled visit, we discovered that the member had not yet contacted any lender about the project. Our Designer recommended at that time that the member begin the financing process as it can be rather lengthy (as many as 90 days is some cases, and rarely less than 60 days). Our Designer then asked that the member keep us posted on the status of the financing for the project. We have no other record of any other phone calls or visits to our office after the early November 2010 unscheduled visit. We have an Administrative Assistant on staff from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday whose primary task is to answer the phone and disseminate messages/information. All Showroom staff (five staff members) use email and have a computer for exclusive use. Our Designer placed a follow up call to the member late the first work week of January 2011 and the call was not returned. After I discovered and reviewed the report by the member during the second week of January 2011, I placed a telephone call to him. He returned the call the next day and we discussed the circumstances relating to his experience with Adams Construction Services, Inc. and the issues referenced in his member report. We discussed the misunderstanding of the financing of the project and his concerns about communication. The member did forward one email to me that he sent in mid-December 2010 to the Designer that did go unanswered. I asked the member if he had attempted to contact me, as the owner of the company, or any other Adams Construction Service, Inc. staff to discuss any lack of communication or service he was experiencing and he stated that he had not. The member also stated at this time, that he will be relocating for professional reasons and will be listing the home for sale in the spring of 2011. I apologized to the member about the misunderstandings and the unanswered email, and we mutually agreed that Adams Construction Services, Inc. would refund 50% of the charge for the design for which a company check for $375.00 was mailed to the member on January 13, 2011. The member then asked that I prepare a proposal for items that needed repair prior to the sale of the home this spring. I agreed to prepare a proposal for these items and am actively working on this proposal as of this writing. Thad Adams, CGR, CGP, CAPS President Adams Construction Services, Inc. January 24, 2011

It was a big project. The overall experience went very well. I would recommend them for their competency and their professionalism. I was very impressed with the fact that at the end of each day they would completely clean up all tools and debris. On the rare occasion when they were not able to make out it as planned they would call the day before and inform us. Upon completion there were a couple of minor issues we wanted taken care of. Even though we had paid in full, they were out the very next day do take care of our issues. They did an excellent job. I would use them again in the future. I have had many projects done in the past and this is the only company that actually completed the job to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: Adams Construction Services replaced and expanded our deck and put in a patio for us.

Mr. Adams came to my home as scheduled and gave me an estimate for tearing down old porch and installing new porch rails, columns and screen panels, along with a new screen door. The estimate was a tiny bit higher than the first I received but after reading their glowing references on the Better Business Bureau website, I decided to go with Adams. I am so glad I did. Plus the materials are of better quality. My house is old, and apparently "out of square" but the men who did the installation worked long and hard to overcome the problems that my house presented. They were always on time and completed everything as promised. The two men who did the job, were very professional, knowledgable, polite and hardworking. They completely cleaned up any mess before they left each day. They do all types of home repair and remodeling, decks - everything - and I will be calling them again soon, to remodel basement. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Old porch columns and rails were torn down and a new, screened-in front porch with columns and rails and screen door was installed. The new porch looks lovely and is maintenance free. Adams Construction did the work as promised and even went out of their way and worked late, to solve a small problem caused by the manufacturer and by the fact that my eighty-five year old house presented some challenges
