They were wonderful. They packed, moved and took care of all the transportation in my cross country move. I felt like they gave me a fair price. They were very courteous and professional.

Paragon Moving (MN) packers arrived 2 days ahead of time to get the boxes ready. Tommy and his team helped tirelessly to pack and prepare for moving day. On the big day, the loaders worked with John (Bekins/Wheaton Van Lines) to load the truck. We were 1 of three families packed on the truck. John (Wheaton/Bekins) kept in contact with me throughout the move. He was professional and patient with the helper crews. He took pride in his work and kept all of our boxes safe. Bekins Relocation unloaded John's truck at our new location in Watkinsville, GA. The team was polite and hard-working until the end. Everything, including the piano, arrived safely. Our family has moved 4 times in the last decade. This was the best, most stress-free move we've ever had. I credit Bekins/Wheaton and Paragon Moving for the success.

Many items were damaged or destroyed - some are not replaceable or were custom built furniture items, or things with sentimental value. We had decorative egg shells packaged with metal objects (literally wrapped up in the same packing paper) - the egg shells were obliterated. Handwriting on bill of lading was difficult to make out; as we have started claims process we are discovering that they wrote that items were damaged when they had not been. In my book, that makes them a bunch of liars trying to make sure they won't be blamed for the damage they will do by their utter carelessness. The crew had lunch by the truck and left chicken bones on the curb; also apparently they are as careful with their bathroom habits as they are with your possessions as they managed to urinate down the side of the toilet and on the floor. They ignored instructions I provided regarding how to disassemble furniture, which resulted in damage to a couple of items. They attempted to move our washer without putting in the shipping bolts and seemed upset that I made them wait until I could put them in myself since they outright refused to do it (they said their company says they aren't supposed to). They tried to move a very valuable teak table that I inherited from my grandparents without taking apart the pieces and even after I cautioned them about it, they did not package the pieces in a way that prevented rubbing of the top surface of the table. Frankly, I could go on and on - there is a long list of items they damaged because they refused to listen to my instructions and apparently they don't have any idea what they are doing...or they just don't care to do an acceptable job because they just write down that everything is damaged beforehand. Regarding delivery, we were supposed to get two days notice before they showed up. It was getting late into the window of possible delivery times (they give you a range of delivery dates when they take your stuff) so WE called and found out our stuff would arrive the next day. I wondered if we hadn't taken the initiative to call them whether anyone was going to see if we would be home or if they were just going to show up unannounced?? When unloading, there were several items that started coming into our house that were not ours and I had to tell them to put them back on the truck - I have yet to discover if we are missing anything that didn't come off the truck that was supposed to, but it is clear that their ability to make sure all your possessions stay together is utterly lacking. They don't go through any of the paperwork when they deliver so you have to somehow do your best to account for all of your possessions. If, however, you try to pause and look around and account for your stuff or examine any possible damage you see, they will get snappy at you and just start putting stuff wherever they see fit (rather than into the rooms you direct/prefer) because they don't want to wait for anything. They piled boxes into one room so that we couldn't even get into the room - and our dogs were in crates in that room so it became an emergency for us to shuffle all of those things around so we could let our dogs out. We didn't get to choose this company as it was assigned by the employer, but I would strongly urge anyone to use a different company for their move. We have also now been waiting for two months now for the claims process. I'm sure it is complicated because this company was subcontracted by the employer's contracted mover, but someone is dropping the ball with follow up and ultimately this is the company responsible for all the damage to our stuff and the lies on the shipping paperwork.
Description of Work: Packing boxes, loading big truck, driving 1200 miles, unloading big truck. Relatively small move from a <800 sq ft house.

The company knew I was moving valuable antiques. I paid for packing, boxing and moving art, antiques and a new mattress and box spring. I packed approximately 150 boxes myself. The moving company sent a mover reputed to be one of their best who was not yet even authorized to handle long distance moves. At the departure point the two assistant movers were completely unprofessional. One used my bathroom and left an absolute mess in the toilet and surrounding area after he disappeared for approximately 30 minutes. I paid for my 4 month old mattress and box spring to be boxed and shipped flat. I was horrified to see the mattress suspended in a dangling fashion by a belt attached to the top of the moving truck. I immediately telephoned the local agent representing Wheaton Van Lines in San Diego CA and my request for proper handling of the mattress was ignored. The company sent too small a truck for my possessions. Antique furnishings were shoved against metal. The total damage was in excess of $10000. I believed the additional insurance I purchased for $500 for full replacement cost coverage would provide peace of mind and protection. I am still in the process of hiring an attorney to obtain the actual replacement cost of the damaged furniture. This mover states its only responsibility is to repair the item. An antique table with no observable damage at the departure point suffered 1/8 inch by 6 inch by two inch gashes into the wood of the table in multiple places. When I contacted the Wheaton Claims Department I told them I had not had an opportunity to examine many of the items and needed to know if I could add to the Claim if I filed it when they requested it. I was assured by someone named "Trina" that I could add to the claim. When I did so the company denied responsibility. Wheaton Van Lines used false and misleading representations to obtain my business. They purported to offer insurance without notifying me that the insurance would be processed and adjusted by some employee of Wheaton Van Lines. I obtained estimates from 4 other national companies prior to utilizing Wheaton. They were not the cheapest company and I selected them based on their false and misleading representations. I can never replace the items destroyed by Wheaton Van Lines. I hope this review can protect someone else from the misery of a move like my recent one. I thought I was an educated consumer and using due diligence. My possessions would have been more carefully packed and moved by a few college students than this disgrace of a company.
Description of Work: Moved 4 bedroom house from one to an adjacent state. The vendor, Wheaton Van Lines, operates as Wheaton Van lines through a local company. However my contract was with Wheaton Van Lines and I assumed I was receiving the services of Wheaton Van Lines.

I want to say that Wheaton has an excellent/informative website and the guesstimate I did was so very close to the final amt.. The estimator who came was very polite and thorough and explained many things I hadn't thought of, provided me with contact info so I could follow up AND an impressive folder with detailed information about every step of the process....including any problem resolution. At my request he estimated what moving materials (boxes, etc.) that I would need and had them delivered...a huge convenience esp. if you don't have the time or strength to go run around and get them yourself!! And though it was a bit more $, it was worth it as they buy back what is not needed...but I used everything he suggested, down to the last scrap of paper. That is a good estimator! Both the NYC and FL crews were excellent, very pleasant, hard working, organized and wasted no time getting things done. Made sure I had all my copies of the paperwork and had phone nombers, etc. to track my items or ask any questions. When my items arrived in FL (time frame just as they predicted) they called the day before to let me know delivery time. Upon arrival they made sure I had a check off list to tick off items and they called them off as they came in to match both their and my list. I really appreciated the system Wheaton has in place as it took a lot of pressure off me. Before they left they asked more than once if there was anything they could do and quite willingly did what I needed (setting up heavy bulky shelves iin the armoire, and unasked rescrewed the knobs on my hutch). To put it politely, moving is a real challenge and in the last few years there have been more and more horror stories in the media about people getting ripped off...it was so nice to have this continual level of professionalism (not just at the beginning when they want your business) but throughout the move. If you need to move, Wheaton is the way to go. Thank you Angies List (I'm a new member) for pointing the way!

The day of packing was very stressful for me and again I felt stressed out but the people who were packing kept me informed and was very empathetic to my concerns. The day the moving van was loaded, the drivers came to our house and spoke with us explaining how our home would be shuttled to an area of safe loading. They were very professional and again empathetic to our worries and concerns.
Description of Work: Mark Sanders at Mena, Ar. was extremely helpful and professional. He came to our house twice and gave us an approximate cost of packing ad shipping. He also was able to answer all our questions and put our mind at ease to what to expect with the packing and shipping. We both really enjoyed working with him and felt very comfortable that he was handling our belongings.

This was the 9th move in our adult life, all but 2 were long distances and many also involved interim storage. So moving long distances and going into storage for a time is routine for us, with corporate transfers. We got 3 moving bids. We had narrowed it to two movers, one of which was Wheaton. We read all the reviews, both pertaining to the sending end (Castroville, Ca) Wheaton Van Lines and the receiving end(Austin, Texas) end for Wheaton Moving and Van Lines. I liked the other company but the salesman Wheaton sent out to the house sold my husband on Wheaton. He promised our antiques and wood and upholstered furniture would all be wrapped and the high end Wesley Alllen bed-frames for both beds would also be wrapped in plastic. Before I left they were packing up the last bed-frame and "wrapping" it in plastic. I pleaded with them to tape all the hardware and small bed-frame pieces to the headboard, so they wouldn't get lost. When our load arrived after one month in storage, not one thing was covered. They lay custom powdered coated iron bed-frames on exposed aggregate driveway with nothing underneath, so the finish was badly scratched down to bare metal. Not one piece which went on the truck "covered" was covered coming off the truck. They lost four of the leg supports and all of the hardware for our king-size bed. Since it was a 15 year old bed, I had to come up with creative solutions of how to restore our once functional, pristine-condition bed. We slept on our mattress on the floor for over 6 weeks. Wheaton claims department did nothing to help us out, and suggested we buy a $40 Hollywood bed-frame which would not attach to our head and foot-board. They were rude and accusatory, my husband submitted one claim and left off a few things which had been broken. They wouldn't accept a separate claim, they said that was their policy, only one claim. Since the load crossed state lines, I don't think this is legal, but I need to further research this. We had a set of 6 French oak antique chairs in perfect condition (I had even moved the rush seats myself to ensure they made it). One chair looked as though it had been smashed to pieces in bar-room scene from an old Western. An antique cabinet, was badly gouged, our oak parquet coffee table looked as if a two year old carved into it with a pen knife in multiple places. Newly upholstered chairs, which left our house covered with soft cloth covers came off the truck bare and had dark grease marks across the arms and the protective arm-shields were removed on one of them, so the damage couldn't be hidden. When they unloaded the truck to our house I asked that they cover the entry to each carpeted room, most of the house is tile. They covered the tile but not the carpets, even though I made this request several times. I had brand-new carpeting and now it needs cleaning. Oh, I forgot to mention that when they arrived to unload, it was a very hot day and within the first 15 minutes one of the guys quit! We purchased insurance but it had a deductible, and the amount Wheaton paid out less the deductible does not begin to cover the actual repair or damage costs which they caused. They also would only allow one claim form for damages and they expect you to know how much refinishing will cost before you submit a claim, I think most people have no idea of refinishing costs in a new area. So in short, learn from our mistakes, it will be several months and a lot of money to undo the damage this company did to our household. They did send out several local people to survey the damage, they all commented on how bad the damage was. However Wheaton's national claims department was not at all sympathetic, in fact their claims people should not be in any kind of customer service position, because they are totally clueless.
Description of Work: Moved household furniture from Santa Cruz County in California (Castroville Branch of Wheaton), to Austin, Texas, stored furniture in Austin for 1 month and delivered it to new home in Austin,Texas.

Dear Member, I am very sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience with our company. We certainly appreciate your feedback, and also appreciate being made aware of some of the issues you experienced during your relocation. Allow me to assure you that the incidents you have described are isolated ones and not in keeping with the usual quality standards upheld by Wheaton Van Lines. The appropriate parties have been made aware of your concerns and will take the necessary measures to avoid recurrences. I am also disappointed to hear you incurred any damages during your move. I understand there was some confusion over our claims process and the requirement for one claim submission. In fact we did make an exception to our one claim policy. We received an email on July 1st stating that you were requesting to rescind the claim as it was not understood that you could only file one claim. We allowed this and received a subsequent email on July 17th stating you had completed the final claim form and had examined all boxes personally. Our claims department came to an agreed settlement on August 16th, which was signed by your husband in acceptance of our offer for settlement. I would hope this would have been to your satisfaction. If you would like to discuss this further or in more detail, my name is Tabitha Lowery, Senior Move Manager at Wheaton Van Lines. Please call me to discuss these issues or provide me with additional information at 317.558.0279 or e-mail me at Tabitha_lowery@wvlcorp.com. The trip from Nevada took way too long, About three weeks. Everything arrived in fine shape and the workers John, Charlie and Dave were courteous and very helpful. The movers themselves were locally contracted employees and they did good work. Our experience with the actual laborers was fine, but our experience with the corporate personnel was poor. The people were friendly enough, but failed to communicate clearly or completely. They never told us a solid date for loading our truck and just showed up at our house on the earliest of the estimated loading dates. At that time they had no idea when our belongings would arrive at our new home. On several occasions, they failed to contact us when they said they would. We moved in August, so expected things to be busy for them, but the poor communication was the biggest problem in our experience. Overall quite friendly and mostly professional, but when dealing with people in transition who don't know when their stuff is going to arrive, you've got to call back when you say you're going to.
Description of Work: Moving services - load and unload, without packing, for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a finished basement and garage.

While I kept my end of the deal, they tried telling me that when I changed my contract (with the few items of removing/adding) the gal in the office made an addition error and didn't charge me enough. Really? By adding 2 full size mattresses, it was going to cost somewhere around $1100 more? No way. So the day of the move, the driver and 2 movers come to look at what they need to do. They were there from 8:30am'ish until 11pm'ish!! They worked their tails off but eventually mentioned that the sales person underbid the work and had he (the driver) known that there were more boxes to move, he would have added a couple more bodies and ensured an emptier truck. As it turned out, they spent the last couple of hours trying to squeeze in the last few items of my stuff. Finally making it, they left. The day of the delivery, the salesman calls me and informs me that the front office gal made an error and would I mind splitting the difference since we DID have alot of boxes. I told him I'd give them $400 and thats it since I gave the drivers and two workers $100 each in tip, since they really did work hard. He gave me some baloney that the gal got in trouble, she feels really bad, etc... I don't know what all she does, but she never answered my calls, and evidently makes mistakes (but she also may be the scapegoat, who knows!). The driver was great, the workers were great...somehow I think the driver needs a representative to tag along with the salesmen to ensure they're getting the right estimate out to the clients. Again, this move was from southern California (La Habra office) and moved to Texas. The Texas folks had nothing to do with the event that occurred.
Description of Work: Moved my household from California to Texas. Had provided me an estimate, which I agreed to. Over the course of the month, there were 2 items that were added to my list, and 1 item removed, so following their guideline, I contacted the office in La Habra, California, and the gal was not very good at answering the phone or getting back with me. Finally she did, rewrote the contract weight based on what I had requested, I signed them again and returned them to her.

I stressed about Movers since there are so many nightmares about Movers on the web, the Wheaton representative made me feel at ease immediately. Not only were they the best quote, all of my stuff got to me in one piece. The guys in Pflugerville were on time and each one shook my hand and introduced themselves. They worked hard and steady; even helping my daughter move some things to her car. The guys in Bend must have been just as great. I couldn't personally meet them but my sister and brother-in-law could not say enough good things about them. The only thing is that the furniture was not delivered until the last day of the 11-day Delivery Window (thus the B in the ratings for Punctuality). After they arrived, I found out the delivery before me was an unload and unpack delivery and no one was there to sign off when they arrived.

This was a nightmare move. Luckily I did not pay ahead of time. Corlett Movers (contracted by Wheaton Worldwide) loaded my goods on Friday, July 12, 2013. My stuff was not delivered until Friday, August 2, 2013. In my paperwork, Wheaton did have until Wednesday July 24 as their last day to deliver my goods. Although I thought that was even a bit excessive, I agreed. (Thinking it would certainly be delivered before that!) Day after day, I was calling Wheaton's customer service number, asking about my delivery date. When I did get a voice mail, it was someone who actually said "Good news, we have found a driver who agreed to load and take your stuff!" AGREED?? Gee.....thanks? Isn't that what I contracted you for? And this wasn't until Monday, July 29. So my 'stuff' was sitting somewhere in a warehouse in Cleveland from July 12 to July 29. Just sitting there. Wheaton offered their standard $75 off per day that they are late, which as the days passed by, was completely unacceptable to me. I was living in a house with nothing. Had to buy work clothes, pots and pans, etc etc. And no, there was no accessible hotel nearby that had vacancies. Wheaton finally agreed to take $120 off per day - for the ten days they were late. On the day they did show up to deliver my stuff, they call me at work two hours EARLY, of course. And why wouldn't they? To top that off, the 18-wheeler truck couldn't make it up the dirt road, around the corners to my house - despite being told that from the beginning. I had nice enough neighbors who used their own personal pickup truck. The guys loaded the pickup truck 4 or 5 times, bringing that up to my garage. But wait - one last thing! I seriously had only one piece of furniture that I cherished. One thing. A beautiful hand made desk that I've had for years. And that was the one thing damaged. They broke an entire leg off the desk. But I can make a claim, don't ya know! Anyway, I obviously would NEVER use Wheaton again. I believe waiting 22 days for my 'life' was excessive and inexcusable.
Description of Work: Contracted with Wheaton Worldwide for my move from OH to MN. They contracted Jerry Corlett Movers to pick up my goods. I was given a five day window of the pickup date and given 13 days after that as their LATEST delivery date. But told orally it would most likely get to MN a few days after I do (I got to MN on July 13). Corlett loaded me on Friday, July 12, 2013.

Dear Member, thank you very much for your feedback! I am sorry to hear your move was not completed to your satisfaction. I am sorry to see that we did not have a driver to directly load your shipment, and so your shipment was delayed in delivery. I understand that based on the final weight of your shipment, you did not qualify for our standard delay compensation of up to $150 per day with receipts for 100% of hotel and 50% of food, but that we recognized the inconvenience our delay caused. Your information is correct that we made exception and offered $75 a day, no receipts required. Upon further review of the unusually long delay we increased that offer to $120 per day per your request. I hope this compensation helped to ease some of the inconvenience, and want to extend my most sincere apologies for this happening. My name is Tabitha Lowery, Senior Move Manager. I can be reached via phone 317-558-0279 or email tabitha_lowery@wvlcorp.com if there are any other outstanding concerns. Thank you again for your business.

The contact with the mover in Kensington was quite good and very responsive hence the B in the responsive question above. We put part of our goods in storage to de-cluttter the house, so there were 2 moves. When I asked for a specific date for the move from there and a specific date to move in here, I was given what I requested and the dates were as I needed. The timing was as they said it would be. There were a couple of mistakes in the second move - took a glass tray from the microwave that was to be left there, missed two drawers in the dining area and had to sort of toss them in a box at the last minute. The moving in here in Charlotte was as it was supposed to be, as far as scheduling was concerned. However, there were 5 instances of damage some of which we discovered right away. Sadly they were all but one, old/antique/family things: Broken jinger jar lamp, front edge of corner table was broken off, crystal chandelier frame bent badly, arm of torchere lamp bent and the glass shade from one of a set of old brass torchere lamps. The workers each time were prompt and friendly. In some areas they seemed professional, but there was some packing that seemed haphazard and there was placement of items either in storage or in the truck, that caused the aforementioned damage. The chandelier was in a large box that had an indentation in the top that could only have meant that something very heavy sat on it with some sort of protuberance in storage. Whatever it was, it was heavy enough to bend a very sturdy circular iron framework so that it looks like a tilt-a-wheel. The box was marked fragile and chandelier on all sides. It was poor judgment where it was placed. We had insured the total load for replacement cost. I sent the claim to the office in Indianapolis on July 5 and have gotten a letter of cognizance from them as of July 18. Since then, there has been no response. Today, Aug 5th, I have placed a phone call, voice message of course, and haven't heard back from the claim manager, Trina Morgan. I will try to give an update when I hear from them.
Description of Work: Moved us from Kensington MD to Charlotte NC. The company is Bekins. They don't have an office here in Charlotte, so the driver and one man came from office in Woodbridge VA and 3 men from Charlotte for the move-in.

They were great. The only problem we had with them was with filing a claim. The premium was for 100% replacement on some items that were broken. When they packed our things many of the boxes had the initials CP which means Customer Pack. We thought it was the packers initials when we saw it. When you get your inventory each box is assigned a number.Do not sign the inventory papers until you know who packed the items; either you or them. In our case we packed non breakable items such as books, but they packed breakable items. The move was fast and I feel like as a consumer it is our job to slow this process down, read the contract so there is no misunderstanding. We are currently trying to get the total cost back of the broken items which totals under $500.00. We have not been successful as of now due to the "CP" which on the box that we did not pack.

The actual physical move was excellent. The movers who arrived were efficient, punctual, helpful, pleasant, strong! The items moved were moved quickly, absolutely no damage to home or items. They itemized each box, and were extremely methodical and nice.Nothing was lost, broken, misplaced. However, and this is no fault of the actual movers, they arrived 3 days late. Evidentally the company office, knowing our deadline, ignored it and booked another move, that took longer than expected bumping our move. The driver/mover who moved items across the states was exceptional. He was a one man show who drove for 2 days I think then moved everything up stairs, efficient, nice, trustworthy, strong, helpful. I would use the moving company again.
Description of Work: Moving company provided an estimate, insurance, supplies, arranged for move of furniture and things half way across country. They were very pleasant and professional.

It started out well - as I am sure they all do - the Representative came for an in-home survey and was quite nice and gave a reasonable estimate - so far so good. The bldg I was moving into had certain restrictions (weekend delivery would cost $1000) and I emphasized multiple times about it and she assured me that they would absolutely honor those and would not deliver on a weekend. Based on those reassurances and what seemed like reasonable pricing I signed the agreement. The move was scheduled for a Monday and on Friday I called the Rep to find out about the time etc and was told that the movers were coming on Tuesday and would deliver on Saturday! When I reminded about the restrictions she offered to call around and find a storage for the weekend and then deliver on the following Monday - no guarantees about any missing or lost items. Then (multiple phone calls) she stated that their carrier vehicle could not get into DC as 18-wheelers are not allowed into the city: however, I called the dept. of transportation only to find out that all they need is a permit - on calling back the rep (numerous back and forth calls!) she finally admitted that they did not have a permit and was not willing to get one - and now wanted to charge me additional price for a shuttle. By this time there was no time for any alternate arrangement and I was completely at their mercy - so ended up paying for the shuttle. Even worse, on the day of the move, they ended up charging more for the shipment itself claiming that it was over weight although I had thrown out considerable amount of stuff after the Rep's visit for the estimate. Ended up paying almost $1000 more than the original estimate! In all, not a pleasant experience at all. I have heard from many others of similar (or worse) experiences and I truly wish there were regulatory agencies (or some mechanism) looking into the whole moving industry as clearly they are all great scam artists.

We actually split our belongings for moves to two separate locations. The movers were scheduled on two separate days. Unfortunately I allowed them to move the later move up a day which actually hindered me a lot more than I had planned. Subsequently I ended up parting with some things that I would have otherwise kept. All of the movers that submitted bids were very professional and all were selected from Angieslist. The reason we selected Wheaton was based on cost, second lowest bid, and timing. My husband was present when van arrived at one location and everything went smoothly, and very quickly. My mother was present along with a friend who had piggy-backed on our move when the other van arrived at the other location. The offload took quite a while because they could not get another person to help out. But the driver and his helper were very nice, thorough and handled everything as quickly and carefully as possible.
