The Mad Hatter Chimney Service

The service was performed well. We had our 2nd story dryer vent system cleaned. The service tech cleaned the duct from the laundry room to the outside vent. He removed the exterior cover and thoroughly cleaned the heavily blocked duct work and the vent. The only thing I was disappointed with was I had asked the gentleman I made the appointment with if they could check out our fireplace cap as we had some air leakage into the fireplace. I wasn't home when the work was done and I never heard what the outcome was on the fireplace cap.

Inspection went very well - no problems found.

He did a great job while sweeping our chimney. Very punctual and professional. Cleaned up every single piece of ash that was left. Even though the previous owners had never had the chimney swept he did not charge us more. He also inspected the chimney for any issues. Our chimney and mantle were left sparkling when he left. Probably cleaner than they were before he came haha.

Overall, the service was good. The report was that the Chimney was not very dirty. Additional advice was given regarding repair work that should be done. No pressure by the service man to follow through and I appreciated that.

Very poor experience. The technician did a good job cleaning the mainfloor flue (which we normally do anyway, we rarely, if ever, use the basement fireplace). He took interior images of the mainfloor flue and said he would get those to the boss for review. Did not hear anything for two weeks. Finally called and asked what was going on. Told the boss would get back to us. The boss got back to us and said he did not see anything unusual and that the addition of the sealed flue hatches had a good chance of resolving the issue. We agreed and paid half for them to order the flue hatches. They said they would be in in a few days Another couple weeks went by. Called again to ask when they were going install the flue hatches. Got a message that the crew would be out the next morning (Friday). The next morning the crew showed up before lunch but their ladder was to short. Said they would have to get a longer one after lunch. After lunch they came back with another ladder, but ladder was also too short. Said they would have to go back to the office and discuss how they would install the flue hatches. They finally got back out the next week and installed the hatches. One tech was carefull to remove his muddy/dirty boots while in the house. The second was not and tracked dirt/mud through our living room and basement. After they had installed the hatches and left, I checked the basement fireplace and even with the flue hatch closed I could still feel a distinct draft of air coming in from the fireplace. Tried a fire in the mainfloor fireplace and still had smoke being pulled into the basement through the lower level fireplace. Called and had the boss at the Mad Hatter come out to look at the situation. After inspecting the flues visually in both fireplaces he said it looked like the holes in the center of the bricks used to construct the chimney flues may be allowing smoke to infiltrate from one flue into the other. I also pointed to a possible gap in some of the brick work in the mainfloor fireplace flue that may also allow smoke through. He agreed. I do not understand why this was not observed from the images supposedly taken but the initial tech and supposedly reviewed by the boss before suggesting the flue hatches. Explained we really wanted to find and answer (opening windows in winter to prevent smoke being pulled in through the basement fireplace so we can have a fire is really not an answer). The boss said he was going to call a guy he know in Tennessee or Kentucky about possibly using a large "caulking gun" to seal any possible opening in the firebox/lower flue, or perhaps another option. The boss said he would get back to us. I again repeated we wanted to find and answer. This was back in December and we have not heard anything from anyone at the Mad Hatter since then. I don't think that after you outline the issue for a service provider, agree to use their service, and they take on the job that you should have to constantly call them to find out when they are going to get on the job. The customer service with this group is poor, the communication is basicly non-existent. I do not believe they did an adequate job looking for why smoke was being drawn into the lower fireplace and they suggested a possible fix that was not thoroughly vetted.

Everything went well! They were able to come out the next day after I called.

We did not have heat for 12 hours. The furnace man said our exhaust duct was blocked. I called Mad Hatter. He came in one hour and solved the problem. Excellent service!

He came right out and he was so honest. I had him come back out because I thought there was another issue. He didn't charge me for this second call even though the issue was something I created. I couldn't say enough about the great service they provide--the promptness, professionalism, honesty. I would recommend him to anyone needing chimney work.

This was the second time we used them, very thorough, friendly, excellent clean up.

The Mad Hatter called ahead of time because he finished an earlier job and wanted to check if we wanted to start sooner. The chimney sweep arrived, removed his shoes to protect the carpets and explained the services he would perform. He then swept the chimney and performed the inspection pointing out some small cracks in the fire brick mortar that I could repair myself or have him do. The following day I noticed that the chimney cap had been knocked off and damaged. I contacted the Mad Hatter and they came out the next day and replaced the cap. I picked The Mad Hatter because of the rating on Angie's list and was not disappointed. I highly recommend them!

I noticed that the chain for the top mounted damper that Mad Hatter installed three years ago was pulling a piece of brick out of the fireplace. Technician came to repair that and perform the annual inspection and cleaning. After the technician left, I noticed that there was a large hole in the grout between bricks within the chimney, about 1 foot from the bottom of the fireplace. This is something I would have expected the technician to notice and report to me. I called to report this, was told I'd get a call back, and after two business days with no response - I had to call. The technician came out again and repaired the hole and apologized for missing it. He got in the car to leave and I noticed there was still loose grout around the brick. I called him back in from his car to address and he fixed. He was polite and did what I asked. Apparently it's my job to do the chimney inspection. I don't have a lot of confidence in the quality of their work.

The experience from the initial phone call to the actual cleaning and inspection was done and performed in a very professional manner. I would recommend this company.

Our 45-year old home needed some chimney tuck pointing done. The contractor who did the work informed us that we really needed a chimney cap. What was there since the house was built was the wrong size (too small) and that a chimney cap would keep the family room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. We had issues with birds flying into the chimney before. The contractor offered to do the work himself, but recommended Mad Hatter as they would have the parts to do the job on hand and recommended that they do excellent work. I called for an appointment for them to come and they arrived exactly on time. After assessing the situation, we had a non-standard size chimney flu and the service man did not have that unusual size on his truck. He attempted to call the office to see who might have one on their truck and meet them half way. Unfortunately, it needed to be ordered. I spoke with their main office to authorize the order and they had it within 3 days. The service man returned to install it puttting it in his already cramped schedule for that day. Wonderful people to work with. He explained everything we needed to know, informed us that our chimney was also very clean and did not need to be swept. I would highly recommend this company for any chimney needs. They are top notch par excellence.

We had them out because our chimney had visibly begun to deteriorate. They checked and cleaned both chimneys, and repaired the broken chimney by replacing degraded parts and rebuilding the chimney. They were professional and kept me informed of what needed to be done and why.

Saw Mad Hatter at Indpls. Home Show. I have several rentals with fireplaces and was looking for someone to service them so I thought I'd start with this company. Very nice on phone and prompt on appointment. I had asked the girl on the phone if the sweep would get on the roof to inspect. She said not normally on a level 1 inspection but would ask him to do so in this case since it was a one story. She said she would note that on the ticket. He came in, swept the chimney which was extremely dirty, gave me a quote on a repair on the firebox, and cleaned up. He also gave me a quote on a new chimney cap of about $900. I asked him if he had been on the roof. He said he didn't need to. I asked him again stating that the office had told me that someone would go on the roof. He again stated that he could see everything he needed to see from the ground. He then said that maybe the wood at the top of the chimney might need to be replaced but he couldn't tell for sure. Gee, I guess he couldn't see everything from the ground! I complained to the Mad Hatter and the girl said she would tell the owner, Dennis, that I wasn't happy. I honestly expected to hear from someone, but all I got was a thank you post card two weeks later. If the sweep had only done what I asked and what was promised, there would be 3 more chimneys to clean and his quote on a new chimney cap would have had more validity.
