It went very well. They were extremely clean and professional. They laid down a cloth to keep my floors from getting dirty. They did not try to sell me services that I did not need and they took the time to explain what they were doing. We were very happy with their performance and professionalism. We will definitely be using them again in the future!

We recently moved into our house and since this is our first fireplace, we wanted to have it looked at before our first use. Found a $10 off coupon in the Reach magazine and called to schedule. They were able to schedule for Saturday since this is their busy season. Roger called to advise he was running ahead of schedule and wanted to know if he could come early. Everything went well. Drop cloths were put down to prevent any mess. A part on one of our glass doors was missing. Roger found the missing part in the ashes and offered to reinstall but didn't have the right screws in his truck. The whole process maybe took 40 minutes and we feel like the did a great job. Roger was very friendly and took the time to show us how to operate our fireplace.

The mad hatter is not mad at all. He is a very nice guy. Did the work professionally and neatly. I thought that the damper may have been broken and that an expensive repair may be involved. The mad hatter found that it was simply out of position. He put it back in place and demonstrated the proper operation.

Dennis originally came out to do the chimney sweep and inspection. We had recently purchased the house and knew it had been left in a manner of He showed us a problem with the fireplace insert flooring (a large gap between the two stone pieces which would allow heat and ash to fall underneath the fireplace floor and cause a fire hazard). The stone was also chipping away and generally in bad shape. Replacement was going to require a custom measure and cut of new stone flooring and careful disassembly of parts of the insert in order to remove the old stone and insert the new one. The cost for replacement was $349. Additionally, Dennis stated that our chimney cap (steel) appeared highly corroded and was likely the original cap to the house. It was definitely noticeable from the ground. Although we are new homeowners, we understood the issue with aging and damaged caps and the damage they can cause to the house, so I noted interest in getting it replaced and asked how much. He said he had to estimate because he didn't actually go up to look at the cap and measure it (???). We had to tell him we were dead serious about getting it done before he got his ladder out and went up to the roof to measure and inspect it. Our house IS a 2-story, but I thought it odd that he didn't actually inspect the cap until we effectively committed to hiring them to do the work. He snapped a photo with his phone and showed us what it looked like. It definitely needed replaced since it wasn't even fully attached to the chimney (you could just lift it straight off). He did all the measurements and wrote up the invoice for the inspection ($99) plus 50% down for the rest of the work we needed. However, he did not measure the fireplace floor as we expected so that all the work could be done all at once when the parts were in. I suggested he go ahead and measure it, but he did not (it was Friday, so my guess is he had other plans?). The chimney cap came in more quickly than I expected (less than a week) so the office called to schedule installation. When I spoke to the admin that called me, she seemed confused when I asked about the fireplace floor and if the person coming out would be working on that at the same time. The other issue is that their availability was limited to weekdays (their last appointment time is 2). I could not take off work that week to meet with them so my husband had to go through some drama to try and be home to meet them. Ultimately, we would not have had to be present it they were just replacing the chimney cap, but we had no idea if they needed inside to measure the fireplace. We also couldn't get an answer as to whether they would need to come back another time to install the floor. Ultimately, the gentleman that showed up replaced the cap (including painting the rest of our steel chimney flue so it all looked nice and shiny and new), measured the fireplace, and cut the stone right there at the house in the driveway. the work took much longer than we anticipated because we didn't realize they were going to do the fireplace work in one shot. We had to bump out some of our evening plans, but it was worth it to know our chimney was safe to use. I just wish we had a bit more information when they scheduled the time to install everything. Overall, I would definitely hire The Mad Hatter again. I felt their expertise was extremely high and I never felt I was "talked down to" as a woman (the sure-fire way to be dismissed and not get my business). Dennis had lots of very helpful information and tips for use of our fireplace.

He came out and looked at the job and told me what the job would entail. He sent a guy out to spray the chimney, and I was not satisfied with the job the guy did doing the repairs. Later on, we had a painter come out and do some painting on the overhang on our house. The painter said that we had a couple of spots on the fireplace that wasn’t looking too good. After I inspected the chimney, I saw that there were holes in the chimney, and the painter lifted the whole top of the chimney off. They man should have seen that the top of the chimney was shot. It had a crack in it and he should have seen it.

Response from The Mad Hatter Chimney Service
Dennis (the Owner) went to [member name removed] house on 6/25 to give him an estimate for some repairs to his chimney. Dennis informed him at that time that there were cracks in his crown coat and that it was coming off. Member said he thought that The Mad Hatter had done the repair, our records DO NOT show ANY previous repairs for [member name removed], he has us confused with someone else. When our technician showed up on 7/18/13 to do the scheduled repairs [member name removed] said he thought that we were going to remove the rust on his chimney before doing the mortar repairs and water repellant. Our estimate did not include rust removal, however our technician went to purchase supplies to attempt to remove the rust before he completed the scheduled repairs and we did not charge [member name removed] anything additional for the rust removal. We DO NOT wish to do any work for [member name removed] in the future. Update: We performed the work as outlined in our estimate and even did some rust removal at no additional charge. We have never done any repair work to the top of the chimney where the problem is. We do not give refunds for work that we did not do. He needs to contact the company that did that repair and have them redo it or refund his money.

The house that I bought had a ton of problems.. in fact the inspector said he don't know how the sellers were evening using it. The repairs required were a new liner, parge the smoke chamber, new crown coat and water repellent. I had a competitor given an estimate on the repairs but they wanted to recoat the liner. I called Dennis at Matter and he said that a better why to fix the liner was to use a stainless steel liner which would almost last forever. Dennis walked me through all the repairs and the individual costs. Dennis's explanation made all the difference for me so I scheduled them to come out to the house once I closed. They said it would take two days to complete the job. After my close Warren and Rodger came out and were extremely friendly and explained to me all that they were going to do. Warren also pulled me on to the roof and showed how another chimney vent on my roof needed repairs as well. This wasn't an upsale but and explanation on repairs needed on a house that hadn't been maintained for 7 years. I wanted the chimney vent repaired as well and was given a quote. Agreeing I left for work to all them to get to it. I was surprised to be called at 3:30 stating that they had completed the job and had come under the calculated budget. I am super happy with the work they did, the attitude they had, the explanations given to me, and price. I now have a working chimney that won't burn down my house. :-) I would hire Mad Hatter in a heart beat. Thanks for the great work!

It took him about 30 seconds, I guess. What I had to do was as a result of the home inspection. So they wanted to look what the home inspector was saying so I sent them a copy of the report. So when the gentleman came, he knew exactly what he needed to do. It took him longer to put down his cloth. He was professional, he knew what he was doing. He was quick about it and he addressed the issue that was for the home inspection. I paid $99 and he really wasn't there 5 minutes, he didn't even shut off his van.

I bought my Broad Ripple house last December and had an idea that the fireplace/chimney needed some major work. Basically, the previous owner hadn't used the fireplace probably since LBJ was President! Plus, a new high-effeciency furnace vents to the outside through PVC, so the only other thing that the chimney was being used for was the hot-water heater. The connections from the water heater vent to the chimney weren't done to code and really needed to match up better with the chimney venting. Biggest cost was the labor to remove the old 1941-vintage chimney tile lining and then reline and reseal the fireplace part of the chimney with a 100% fireproof stainless steel liner. The smoke chamber just above the fireplace needed to be parged [basically, a thick coating of fireproof mortar that can be thought of as kind of like stucco, but thicker and of course, fireproof] and a high effeciency damper, located at the top of the chimney stack and controlled by a pull-chain in the hearth finished the job off. For the hot-water heater vent, Mad Hatter just ran a standard aluminum pipe down the other part of the chimney and matched up and mated the venting from the water heater in the basement perfectly. All my chimney systems are now A-OK. I'm happy. Dennis and his crew were clean, quick and professional. I will be using them for all future chimney work, especially annual sweepings.
Description of Work: Removed old masonry chimney tile, replaced fireplace chimney brick with fireproof stainless-steel liner, parged the smoke chamber, removed old mantle-height damper with brand-new one up at the top of the chimney, aluminum vent in old furnace chimney to properly vent hot-water heater.

He did not do anything except pull out our wood burning stove with out protecting the tiles that it sits on. Took a look and told my husband that we need to have a new liner put in the chimney and to not use the stove anymore. He pushed the stove back into place and put some kind odf sealant on the pipe leading into fireplalce that was black when he put ilt on and dried white. The white looks very ugly. He quoted an very high price to fix chimney which was completely torn down a replaced from roof leverl up. The person name was Shawn. He was very curt and sloppy. I would not recommendhim to anyone. Description of Work: Service person came in to clean chimney that vents our Fsher's Grandpa Bear stove. He did not protect the tiles that the stove sits on. He roughly pulled out the stove and left scrapes on the tiles. He took a look at the chimney and within less that a minute told us it was glazed and not to burn the stove. We had the chimney rebuilt a few years back tearing it down to the roof line. He then packed up his gear and told my husband that he could put a new liner in for $4000.00. He was rude and abrupt. I would not refer this person to anyone.

He was reasonable. We have used them before and we used them again because they did a good job. They are honest. They cleaned up after themselves very well. They were very neat and this job can be very messy. When they left it looked just like when they came even though they had cleaned the chimney. The chimney eliminated some of the smells during a raining day and I can smell ash now so he kind of eliminated all that. The price was fair. I don’t have any complaints at all.
