Mike Webster arrived to write the quote. I have to say that he was not real friendly. We went to the backyard to discuss the job. I asked if they would be careful about my cement borders and the plants near the tree. Mike looked at me as if I had offended him. He just paused, looked at me, and said that of course they would protect everything. About a week later, I contacted the company to schedule the service. They stated that, before they could schedule anything, I needed to submit an email (or FAX) indicating that I accepted their quote. I was told that they would then contact me for an appointment. I did this. When they did not call me back, I called and stated that they promised to call me on the previous day to schedule. The woman in the office, who answered the phone, was rather rude and unprofessional and stated that they are very busy on Mondays and have a stack of quotes to file through. I stated that I was told they would call me the previous day. I stated that I would contact Angies List if they did not schedule the appointment that day as promised. The woman very rudely said, "Thank you" and then, "Oh, brother!" I don't know if the service is any good, or not, but they need to do some customer service training with the office staff. What ever happened to friendly customer service? I'm sure they do a good job, but knowing how to treat people is a big part of being in the service industry.
Description of Work: I contacted Ping to remove a tree. Mike Webster came to my home and wrote a quote: $229 to chop a mid-sized tree and $115 to grind the stump and use double plywood to cover my concrete borders.

Estimate was done quickly but it took several days for them to do the work since there had been storms earlier in the week that took down trees all over. Crew of 3 guys arrived at about 7 pm and they stayed until done, about 2 hours. Cleaned up all the mess and did a wonderful job.

I hired Ping because they were highly rated. Their quote stated: "reduce crowns 25%-30%, shape, prune, remove the dead and diseased branches and lift canopies. Remove all debris. They worked and worked but the trees didn't seem to be getting any smaller. I encouraged them to take more off. He indicated that wasn't how they did it and felt it would damage the trees. They still weren't as I'd hoped but what was I going to do. I decided to wait until Spring and see how they look. They are now shaggy and overgrown again and even nearing the power lines. I called to speak with Mr Ping personally and was told he'd call me back to discuss this but he never has. I've been told that twice now! I paid a lot of money and didn't get the service I requested.
Description of Work: We have 8 trees and I wanted them to be trimmed.. and trimmed back pretty well. Our lot is fairly small so i've always had them cut back pretty dramatically. I've had them cut back every 4 or 5 years but our prior guy had since died.

Response from SavATree Indianapolis
As a rule we discourage crown reductions period. But, in some instances, in these urban settings, crown reductions are unavoidable because of space restraints. But, some clients insist on crown reductions and our industry standards that are governed by ANSI-A-300 says no more than 25%. We leaned toward the client's desires and did a 25 - 30% reduction. The truth is that the harder a tree is cut the faster it tries to grow back out because the leaves are the food factories and the tree is trying o survive. But, as certified Arborists, we agree to adhere to these standards and as the member says, he wanted them cut harder and we told him up front, that we cannot do that. There are unprofessional and untrained companies that would have complied with his request. But, being informed of the finished product before the work began, he cannot say we did not perform as the job was contracted. We did exactly what we said we would. If he expected something different than what we promised, I'm unable to satisfy.

Given this site is a resource for experiences, I'm going to hold the company to a higher standard and be more critical when commenting on this experience. Pros -Arborist came out and was insightful He was able to give me a good diagnosis as to why the old tree was dying. -Actual physical labor seemed efficient. Final product was in good condition, with minimal ground disturbance. Though they were unable to work with me to perform the work while I was home, the new tree is great. Cons -They were unable to contact me and let me know when their employees would be out to do the work. I am the kind of person that likes to be around when work is performed on my property. I know there are people out there that don't care about this, but there are probably many that would agree. I asked them if they could give me some times they would be able to come out. They said they just come out when they have availability. -Their estimate management is confusing and they rely heavily on the customer to manage the estimate edits. They generate read-only pdf files for their estimates and then when I ask to make corrections, they said to just edit the invoice and email it back. Pretty annoying to do this when the only way to edit it is to screenshot the open pdf or print it out, make the edits with pen and then rescan it back in. Come on Pings. We don't all have fax machines anymore. -They messed up the invoice calculations and forget to take off my coupon unless reminded. I attached a coupon for 10% off my service as page 2 to the estimate, as instructed. When they invoiced me after the work was done, they failed to take this off and I had to call and request it. I actually had the work done in two visits. They invoiced me after each one for the work done for that visit. I never got the 10% off of the first visit because I figured they would just take it off the second final invoice. Didn't happen. Rather than dispute it, I just accepted the 10% off the second visit. I only ended up paying about $11 dollars more than I should, but for a highly rated Angie's List company, I was not impressed by this. -When they divide the work over several visits, they dont keep the customer updated on when they plan on doing the next phase. There was about a 2-3 week interval between when the tree was cut down and when the new one was planted. No one called me to let me know when they estimated they would be out to finish the work. I had to call them yet again to ask. I thought they forgot about me. To summarize, I felt that the final product was good, but the office staff needs some guidance on how to manage their paperwork and customer service when it comes to keeping the customer in the loop. I'd like to use them again, since I am enjoying my new tree, but I hope their office staff can get with the program and get organized.

Pings did a wonderful job and the team leader (Terry) was a delight to work with. Ping's doesn't really negotiate prices nor do they work with package deals. I had to use a coupon to get a discount, and that is with substantial work being done. Also, a good part of their business takes place after the crew is on-site. As they work, the homeowner finds many add ons and additional work to have done while they're there. They quote on the spot, and this this additional work is welcomed. Lastly, it took several weeks for them to schedule us in due to weather. We felt lucky to have gotten them, though. The mess from the tree trimming was cleaned up nicely and they hauled everything away as promised. These guys are putting in 13 hour days, yet they maintain a great attitude. The stump removal was a bit of a surprise...it is a differnt crew and they don't necessarily show up the same day as the trimmers do. We were lucky to get the guy on the following afternoon. I have never had stump removal done before, but was surprised to learn that they do not remove their mess. Maybe all tree services do this, but there was a 4 ft pile of chips and dirt piled where my stump was...and they were going to leave it. I don't understand this, as the trimmers worked so hard to rake things up, yet the stumpers leave a heck of a pile for the homeowners to remove themselves. Bottom line is that they charge the same price to haul away the stump debris as they charge for chipping up the stump...so you can double your quoted price. As I said, maybe this is an industry standard...I don't know. They entire job looks beautiful and we will stick with Pings in the future.

Ping's was recommended by a friend. I verified that recommendation by looking up the company on Angie's List. I called, received an estimate and all pertinent documents about the company with three days via email. I talked with Laura in the office, reviewed the estimate to be sure I understood, made a few changes, added some work and then agreed to the estimate. They gave me a time frame and agreed to call a day ahead of time. They did as they said. The called again the evening before to let me know the time of arrival. A very nice crew showed up and after Gordy and I went through the estimate to be sure we were all on the same page, they got to work. Did everything we had agreed on, made no big holes in my yard taking out a large tree, cleaned up their mess and went on their way. The crew was friendly and courteous. I appreciated that Gordy explained what he was going to do to each tree. He had to do some serious cutting on a Red Bud but it will be better in the long run. I would recommend Ping's highly.

Called to get a quote and they responded the same day. I emailed them approval to do the work, and they responded quickly with confirmation. They came on time and on the scheduled date with enough crew and equipment to do the job. Very quickly took down tree, moved all wood to street side to begin chipper-shredding. Crew also removed a large pile of limbs that I had trimmed from other trees in the yard. The crew experienced a minor equipment issue that caused them to be here longer than they had expected, but the only inconvenience was to them and their schedule. The delay caused no issues for me. Later that same day, a second crew arrived with a stump grinder to grind stump below ground level. All shredded stump debris was raked together into a neat pile. This mulch was not taken away, but that was prearranged and I did not expect them to take it.

They came out when it was below zero. The guys were here for over 2 hours. They took it down, they stacked up the firewood, and ground the mulch and left it for me as I had requested. They even dropped something on my trash can and broke it. They knocked on my door and told me that they broke the trash can. It was an old trash can. I didn't have to guess what happened. They told me and it wasn't a problem. I had a wonderful experience. I would say hire them anytime you can. I fortunately had a free stump grinding coupon that they had put in a magazine and I was able to use that for a $190.00 discount. My neighbor and I split the total bill because the tree is on both of our properties. I have also hired them to come out and take down another tree in March.

The estimates I requested from the other 2 providers was done in less than 24 hours. Not sure why Ping's had to send several e-mails before I could get the estimate when the other 2 providers were so quick to respond.
Description of Work: Jan. 19 I e-mail a request for an estimate to remove 16 evergreen bushes and 2 crab apple trees, and to grind down the 2 tree stumps. I included photos of the work sight. On the 20th I received an e-mail from Ping's with 4 attachments regarding tree care, etc. along with their requested for my address and a sentance asking if they could e-mail an estimate and then come to my house for a formal estimate. I e-mailed my address. that same day. and they sent an e-mail back, asking me the location of the bushes and trees, i.e. north, south, west, etc. On the 21st I emailed the location of the shrubs and they e-mail their estimate. I did not do anything further with them as their price was the highest of the 3 estimates I requested.

I asked for an opinion on putting a cable between 2 large trees that I wanted to protect. After looking at the situation, the Pings representative said that we didn't need to do this to protect the trees: they are sturdy and not in danger of getting blown down. It was refreshing to get an honest answer that did not cost me anything! I will definitely call them when I need tree work in the future.
