This has been one of the worst overall experiences I've ever had with quality, responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism. Quality: Kermans to date has been to my home five times to REPAIR their initial wood install which was done with seemingly countless errors such as: too much spacing near the wall for shoe moulding to cover the gap, CHIPS in the wood where staples were used, screws in the MIDDLE of a board in the middle of my hallway covered by wax that didn't match the wood color, nails sticking up preventing shoe moulding from being flush with the floor, boards that were not level with other boards and edges of boards that were visible and discolored compared to the color of the floor. FIVE TIMES they have been here and they are STILL NOT FINISHED. I am considering suing them for such poor performance. When they called to collect the remaining balance, they told me they would put a lien on my house if I did not pay. A LIEN ON MY HOUSE for this type of work. This is the most insulting, absurd and audacious move they could have made after disrespecting my family and home as they have. Lori Nash is my sales agent and I do not recommend. When carpet was installed, the subcontractors scratched the new wood floor, and left carpet shreds all over my driveway which of course blew into my grass and looked awful in the lawn. Additionally these installers left shreds of carpet all over the doorways where the carpet met the wood. THANKS! Responsiveness and Punctuality: Simply said, waited weeks to hear from their and quot;schedulingand quot; department after numerous calls which of course go to voicemail. The repair team was always late, and even canceled on several occasions. So here I am going on almost five months since inception, and the work is still not done. In fact, I received a call this morning that said they were canceling my appointment this morning at 10:30a to install the shoe moulding. CANCELING THE APPOINTMENT FIVE MONTHS OUT. This is absolutely the worst service responsiveness anyone could expect. They obviously have no sense of urgency in resolving my situation. Professionalism: Aside from the incredibly poor responsiveness and punctuality, I had their installers here smelling awful and literally throwing out derogatory comments and curse words of the worst kind while working. They left my doors open despite pets, and on one particular repair day, the repair guy Mark left without even mentioning it to me and also left a window open in the middle of winter and pulled the batteries out of two smoke detectors in the children's rooms of the house WITHOUT TELLING ME. This experience was, and continues to be, awful. I will not be spending a dollar more with Kermans, ever. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Description of Work: I hired Kermans to install new hardwood and carpet throughout my 5,000 sq ft home on Geist.

Response from Kermans Flooring
In response to your critique on April 4th, I have reviewed our performance and have a good understanding of what took place and the mistakes that were made. For what you experienced, I'm embarrassed to say we definitely performed poorly and offer you my sincere apology. In review of the overall installation in order to add clarity but not minimize the experience, I summarize the discovery as follows: The initial difficulty was directed to a particular area in your home where we were installing hardwood and was attributed to one specific hardwood installer from the crew used throughout your home. The lack of careful clean up and the hardwood scratch during the carpet install was the result of carelessness which was responded to and resolved. Service for the hardwood issues did require multiple visits in which there was communication breakdown in coordinating your availability as well as errors made in our scheduling department. The lien was a result of our accounting department policy for past due amounts was specific only to the money owed for the carpet install which was complete and didn't reflect any hardwood issues still being addressed. Even though the largest majority of our customers experience service that affords us the highest of rating on Angie's List, from time to time mistakes happen. Unfortunately, you experienced the exception where more than one breakdown occurred. In spite of these errors, we did persist and take quite seriously our efforts to make corrections to resolve issues. During a communication mistake with scheduling near the end of the job, our Service manager recognized an error in scheduling and rather than re-schedule insisted on correcting the issue right on the spot of which you expressed your appreciation. Although this effort seems minor in the scheme of things, it did demonstrate that our employees care about being responsible and accountable and remain diligent in their effort to satisfy customers. As a result of this experience, we supplied and installed your 1/4 round trim at no charge, took back several cartons of wood you decided not to use at no charge, and took the following actions to help pervent situations like this from re-occurring: Removed the hardwood installer in question, corrected the policies and procedures involving the carpet installer, and instituted changes to our scheduling process.

the warranty is voided. I said I had no idea, and she said that Kerman should have told me and advised me to go back to them. Which I did. I was back at the store again last Tuesday and told the story to Lori, who said she had looked at the warranty ( I got the feeling that she already knew that something was wrong!) and had even checked the online version, but could only find a and quot;recommendationand quot; to clean the carpet every 2 years ( think she said she found that on page 57 of the online version). She offered to call back to Karastan and also talk to the her bosses. She called me back today and told me that there really wasn't much Kerman could do for my, because it was my responsibility. Somehow she now she changed her mind and also seems to believe that the cleaning wasn't a recommendation, but a requirement for warranty. She said that I should have looked at the online version when I bought the carpet (which I don't even know if they had that already 5 years ago). Her boss could offer me a and quot;spectacularand quot; discount of 15 - 20% on a new carpet. I don't know what was so and quot;spectacularand quot; about this offer, but that might be besides the point. I advised her to tell future clients about this required 2 yearly cleaning of their carpets tp avoid similar issues in the future. I don't know if this was the first time that this happened to a carpet that they sold, but I bought the carpet from them and they are absolutely unwilling to help and keep saying it is my responsibility to take care of this matter. Also I was very confused that Lori had been e-mailing with Karastan for a couple of weeks and never found out that Karastan is not responsible for the texture of the carpet (they are only responsible if the carpet becomes unattached from its backside), but another company. Shouldn't she have known that? I had surprise after surprise! When you read the Stainmaster online warranty brochure the 2 yearly cleaning only refers to problems with a stained (wine, etc.) carpet, which is totally different from our problem, which has nothing to do with stains or cleaning, but is a production problem. I feel that I have not been treated very well by Kerman. They should have pursued this matter with Stainmaster since I am their client. Regards, Loek van den Bergh
Description of Work: Kerman installed a new carpet in our living room, dining room and stairs in 2007. The carpet was supposed to have a 10 year warranty. Over the years I noticed that the carpet was not looking the same anymore, and I started thinking about replacing it. When I got an unused piece of carpet out of the basement to see what the carpet originally looked like I was shocked. The pile of the carpet was totally unraveled and looked shaggy and very bushy compared to the piece that had been rolled up in the basement. I called Kerman and they send an inspector out to have a look. He had to cancel his first appointment, but came the next week and agreed that this was odd and that the carpet should not have changed texture. We figured out that it was probably a manufacturing issue. He took pictures which he would show to somebody (his boss?). After that I never heard anything from Kerman anymore. 2 weeks later I decided to go into the store myself and talked to Lori Nash, the sales lady that sold me my carpet originally. She said she had been e-mailing regarding this issue, with Karastan (the manufacturer), but had had some misunderstandings with the Karastan person and only just heard back from her. She promised to send me the e-mail conversation, but I never heard back from her, so I went in again a week later asking when I would hear from them again and when Karastan's inspector would come to look at it. Never heard anything, went back again (in the meantime about 5 weeks had past since I first contacted Kerman). This time she promised she would get in touch with Karastan again, which she did, because later that afternoon I received a phone call from the Karastan Regional Manager, who told me that actually the texture of the carpet was not their responsibility, but another company's, called Stainmaster. She also said that Stainmaster doesn't deal with them or with the store, but only with customers directly, and gave me their claims department's phone number. When I called them the girl was very friendly, asked me all sorts of questions regarding date I bought the carpet, name and details of store, name of carpet, color, square feet I bought etc. Her last question was: how many times have you had your carpet cleaned since you bought this in April 2007? We have a fairly large house and I have different rooms cleaned on different years, so I told her that I thought I had it cleaned once since it is in the formal area of our house which is not used a lot and therefore the carpets don't get dirty. She then immediately told me that their Warranty was then void! I was perplexed, and asked her "why?" She then answered that according to the warranty paper they hand out the carpet has to be cleaned every 2 years and if not, then

Response from Kermans Flooring
In response to your critique of our handling your complaint about carpet we installed 5 years ago, I would like you to understand what took place from our perspective. I can understand your frustration with the process, but because it involved a procedure requiring involvement with the manufacturer we are at their mercy for the timeliness and decision of their response. After our initial inspection seemed to indicate a question about the material, we took the initiative to get the manufacturer involved with requesting them to perform an inspection. Unfortunately, when we turn issues over to a manufacturer we lose control in the response. Our sales representative was persistent with communication but the manufacturer as noted wasn't quick to respond. Then, when their finding involved warranty issues with the fiber manufacturer it further complicated and slowed the process. Upon hearing that the findings of the carpet manufacturer along with the fiber manufacturer had rendered your warranty void, I immediately took the position on your behalf to follow the stipulations of their warranty as if they had honored and not voided it. Their warranty called for a prorated discount which we awarded to you by passing on the terms of their discount as stated in the warranty. We did this for you knowing that we wouldn't receive any reduction in the price charged to us for your replacement carpet. It disappoints me to hear that you feel as though Kermans did not treat you very well, and my offer remains to follow the prorated discount guidelines in the manufacturer's warranty as if they would have honored it.

We asked around and Kerman was recommended. Our sales rep, Lori, was very patience and helped us find the right carpet for each location. We chose a check patterned 100% wool Karastan carpet for the upstairs. From our past experience with 100% wool carpet we knew that it required a very knowledgeable and professional installer. Lori made sure that their top installer, Chuck, was assigned to the job. He did not disappoint. From pattern allignment to perfect seams, Chuck did an excellent job on all locations. In addition Lori personally was very helpful in bringing out area rugs for us to view in our home which helped immensely in making the final choice. When we had an issue with the two area rugs (Karastan not Kerman's problem) she helped get the right support from Karastan to get it resolved. We would definitely recommend Kerman.
Description of Work: We purchased a new home and had to redo the carpeting in the upstairs, walkout basement and an enclosed sunroom. In addtion we needed several area rugs for the upstairs.

We appreciated her help in finding a handyman to handle the project and liked the design, however, I was very disappointed that we didn't get the contrast between flat and gloss that we desired. I also was disappointed that there wasn't any follow up and a call on the carpet for the stairs.
Description of Work: We had our bathroom completely remodeled and got the tile from Nicole at Kerman's. She helped create a very nice design, however, when the installers were making the pattern, I realized they weren't making the correct pattern. I had wanted glossy tile as well as flat tile so there would be a contrast. Nicole said that a sealer would give the gloss, but we found out that was not the case and we should have chosen a different tile. Nicole knew we were interested in getting a carpet runner for our stairs when they went on sale in a couple of months, but I never heard from her. We liked the pattern we had chosen, but felt that there would be more overseeing the project. I also was disappointed that we were not called when the carpeting went on sale. The total cost of the project was around $18,000., however, the tile was a small portion of that cost.

Overall, they were very nice too work with. Gave us a good price and did what they said. Most of my problem lies with the installation. We paid for them to move the furniture, which they did. When moving furniture they banged up the walls, the doorway, and doors which we had just finished replacing and painting. I also found a new scratch on my dresser. They also did not replace some quarter round around my stairs because they said it was already broken which I kind of doubted.
Description of Work: Kerman's placed about 72 yards of carpet for us including removing the old carpet and moving the furniture. However, they would not let us see the carpet estimate which made me some what skeptical because I have heard of places over estimating carpet to up the price. She said it was because they didn't want us to take the estimate to a competitor.

I called and asked for estimates. I hired them based on a prior experience, to install carpet and cove base. They were prompt to reply. The cove base was so poorly installed and it was the beginning of a string of problems. The carpet in areas was improperly installed, improperly trimmed and particularly in those areas the cove base was very poorly done. In one area near a door they had were very choppy with the placement of cove base and the seam was very obvious. Everytime I called about the problem they were prompt to reply and repair. There were large areas and they returned multiple times to address the problems from the original installation. It was such an opposite experience from my first impression of the company and I'd decided at that point from frustration and the repeated cooridation of furniture moving and more that I'd not ever call on them again. To make matters worse there was a billing error which should have noted $4,800 and they instead charged $48,000! They did catch the error immediately but it took enough days for the credit to apply that it came to my attention. I would have been very appreciative of a call and a warning from the company but I had to call them instead.
Description of Work: I'd hired this company before and I'd had a positive experience so I called them again to do a job for me at my office. It was awful.

Installer,Jim Bruening, didn't allow 72 hours for flooring to acclimate. We didn't see him take moisture readings before install as he claims he did. Flooring began cupping within two months of install. In August It took several phone calls before I could get anyone in the installation dept. to respond to my requests to check the floor. Doug Moore, Kermans installation manager, admitted that the floor had severe cupping. He checked the crawl space and found it to be completely dry and properly covered with heavy plastic and a gravel base. He insisted that we needed to install and run a de-humidifier 24/7 along with our air-conditioner, which had already been running all summer. However, we have had hardwood floors throughout the rest of the house since 1994 and have NEVER had a problem with cupping. He further told us that it could take a year for the floor to POSSIBLY flatten out, as we cycle through the seasons. At our request he sent in an independent hard surface inspector, Dave Powell, who did a thorough inspection on Sept. 8, 2010, with photos, of the cupped floor. He also inspected our crawl space. He said that neither our home interior nor our crawl space had a moisture problem. We waited to hear from Kermans. After two weeks I called Doug Moore again. He told me that someone from the office should be calling me. On Sept. 29 I was notified by Cam Goldman in sales that they couldn't locate the inspection report and would contact me as soon as they could find it. On Oct. 11 I received an e-mail from Cam Goldman informing me that Shaw Industries considered the cupping a "local issue" and therefore refused to honor their warranty. On Oct. 13, when Cam Goldman returned my call of Oct. 12 he insisted that we needed a de-humidifier and needed to lower our air-conditioner temperature to 70-71 degrees in order to dry out the floor. (I will remind everyone here that his has been the driest summer in Indiana history!) He said this could POSSIBLY solve the cupping problem. He could not guarantee that this would solve the problem, however, and they were not responsible for the cupping. I asked that either Kermans refund my money so that I could hire someone else to replace the floor, or Kermans could come and replace the floor. He said he would take that up with the owners but felt that that would not be possible since they were not responsible for the floor. It took from mid-August, 2010 to October 11, 2010, to get this response from Kermans. I feel that the floor was improperly installed and they are responsible.
Description of Work: Shaw prefinished hardwood floor was installed in living room, hallway, linen closet.

Response from Kermans Flooring
October 15, 2010 In response to the member’s complaint, we understand and respect their thoughts. We realize that the performance of their hardwood is not what was expected and the finding of manufacturer was not to their satisfaction which has caused them to search for a solution. However, in all fairness to what they have experienced, we have to agree with the manufacture’s findings (see attached inspection). The cupping of the hardwood is a direct result of moisture’s effect on the wood which occurred locally in their home. The hardwood flooring was installed on 4/28/10 at which time the moisture reading taken by the installer read subfloor 8% and the actual hardwood material 6% which is supported by the copy of an invoice to Kermans from the installer (See attachment named “Install Moisture Reading”), Buening Enterprises. In addition, the material acclimation time employed by the installer was a sufficient enough time to produce acceptable moisture levels per manufacturer guidelines for proceeding with installation. Kerman’s installer has a 20+ year experience in installations which include consistently documented and well disciplined procedures of recording moisture levels on every job prior to installation. His procedure for measurement of moisture in the wood and subfloor isn’t typically a process that is demonstrated to a customer at time of installation. Unfortunately, the time of installation occurred during a period were the Indianapolis area experienced near record breaking rainfall. In fact, the cupping of the wood, as supported and reported by them actually began within two months of the install. The hot record braking summer which followed this period had little significance to the findings even though the 90+ degree temperatures in the summer were also accompanied by high humidity. In late August, at the time of the initial complaint, Kerman’s inspected the hardwood and confirmed cupping which is the phenomena caused by a moisture imbalance between the subfloor and the installed floor. We immediately checked for moisture in the crawl and found none but noted a humidity level of 51% in the house at which time we recommended the usage of a de-humidifier along with lower air-conditioner temperatures to assist in reducing the moisture. Then, at the request of the member’s, an independent hard surface inspector was brought out on September 8th. The inspector confirmed that there was no current moisture problem in the crawl space or house per say but did report on page 6 of his Inspection report that the floor moisture reading ranged from 10.9 to 15.9 and the 15.9 was the subfloor which was almost double the moisture reading of 8% taken at the time of installation. We feel bad that they have experienced this problem, but to suggest that we are responsible and should have our reputation tainted for a problem caused by moisture doesn’t seem very fair to us. We didn’t introduce the moisture or install wood that contained excessive moisture. Consequently, we shouldn’t be held responsible for refunding their money.

I wanted hardwood in 2 additional rooms that was the same in the rest of my first floor and found it at Kerman's. Lori was prompt in coming to measure and provide an estimate which was in line or less than at other places I checked. The problem came with first a need to change my installation day by one day but I was given enough notice about that. THen after I had completely dismantled 2 rooms and had their contents in my dining room and great room, the installers did not come and I didn't get a phone call until after 10 to say it would now be the following day. While the installer had needed extra time for the job he was working on, the scheduler did not bother to call either me or my sales person the day before. When I objected, another crew was sent arriving about 1:30 and working until 7 pm. THey returned the next morning at 8 and worked until nearly 5. I had been told this was a one day job which would have been impossible. Around 3 my sales person called to say there wasn't enough wood to finish the job. However furniture could be moved back and the crew returned the following TUesday to finish. THe two issues were not communicating with me before I had my house dismantled; I was having out of town guests that weekend. I would not have objected to waiting on installation. It is surprising that the estimate of the time it would take to do the job was so inaccurate with a company that has been doing business so long. The installers worked hard and took few breaks so it was not their fault. Fortunately the finished floor is lovely and furniture was replaced and everything cleaned up.
Description of Work: Sales and installation of hardwood flooring THe salesperson was fine if not knowledgable about the time required to install. THe floor is lovely and the installation crew worked hard, were exacting and took pride in their work as well as cleaned up. The problem was in communication with the scheduling department.

We went to Kermans because of their ads featured in Indianapolis Monthly, and we want to put in a tile backsplash in our kitchen. We went to the store on July 10 at approximately 2:30 pm. No one was at the desk upon entering, but we could hear a male salesperson helping another couple in the flooring room. We walked through the flooring and tile area. At one point, an older, blond woman said hello, looked us up and down, and said someone would be with us shortly. She was obvioulsy not interested in helping us. We waited and waited, but no one, including the blond woman who was just putting tiles in a display, ever asked us what we were looking for. In our opinion, it was because we were not dressed in the "Keystone" look and/or because we were two women. When we went to leave, the woman yelled out a very insincere "sorry" as we walked out the door. Unfortunately for them, they missed out on working with two customers, both of whom are attorneys, and willing to spend a considerable amount of money for this project as well as an upgrade for some bathroom tile. We would never go back to this store again.
Description of Work: No services performed because no one in the store would help us.

Response from Kermans Flooring
We are very sorry that this member felt that she wasn't important to us; our customers are very important to us and we have built our 88 year old business on service. Saturday's are our busiest day and we were fortunate to have several customers in the store when member came in. We always try to greet the customer and let them know we will be with them as quickly as possible. Our Sales Associate was indeed with a customer but unfortunately the member was not made aware of that. Although the member was greeted, we clearly did not perform to her expectations and we are sorry for that. We want to extend great customer service to everyone who walks through our doors, but at times we have more customers than associates working at the time. We are reviewing our internal processes to address this occurrence. This is a challenge in that we may have one customer come in at a time or five or more customers in the store. Again, we are sorry for her experience and would look forward to working with her as her schedule permits.

It went very well. We got three estimates. We thought Cam paid more attention to our house and gave us a lot of good feedback on what we might and might not want to do than the other companies that came out. Their price was the lowest. They really took care and explained what they were doing. They showed us what to use for stains and dings. They went the extra mile. There was an extra piece and they took it back without any questions. They got right back to us by email to answer any questions. They called before they came for the installation and they were even five minutes early. They cleaned up when they were done. We have gone back to the showroom and looked because we might have them do additional work. They were just great and even recognized us when we went back.

We received great service and quality products from Kerman's. Lori, our sales person was well informed and a real pleasure to work with. I would not consider going elsewhere after working with her. The carpet installer, Chris, did a wonderful job on our stairs. Overall, a very pleasant experience. Kerman's has well informed, professional staff and offers a variety of nice quality products. It is a very customer oriented company.

When they had to order items, it was in when they said it was going to be, showing they are dependable. They let me take samples home and then brought them back without going through a lot of trouble to do so. Their price was excellent.
Description of Work: I've purchased all of my area rugs from them. I've done 2 major purchases within the last 2 years with them.

I cleaned everything off before they took the rugs, but I still thought they were ruined. They brought them back and they were wonderful. I'm not sure bout the price but I was amazed at how well they came out and thought they were worth it.
Description of Work: They cleaned up a horrible mess for me. My rugs were in good condition until I kept my son's dog for two weeks. My rugs, I thought, were ruined. It was awful.
