Description of Work: I ordered kitchen cabinetry. The order was not placed by the DB employee. It was discovered 2 weeks later. Direct Buy blamed the cabinet company for not receiving the fax with my order. The cabinet company blamed Direct Buy because the normal confirmation they send was not received by Direct Buy. When I talked to my contact at Direct Buy about the problem, she was very unprofessional. There was no initial apology; she was very defensive. The 2 week delay through off the scheduling for my new appliance installation and floor installation. I was not able to reschedule with other installers right away, since they were already booked. In the end, I was delayed 2 months getting my house on the market and I missed peak selling time. When the cabinets were finally delivered, the delivery company (who is an independent service) said they had numerous complaints about Direct Buy not placing orders.

Description of Work: When we priced different items(washer/dryer, refrigerator, window blinds), we found it significantly cheaper thru other providers - Best Buys, window blind companies. The delivery time was also faster. We also had the price of one item increased, with an apology, after the purchase. We canceled the delivery. This was back in the 2000 time.

They use very aggressive sales tactics. It only makes sense to use them if you have a very big remodel project or buy a lot of furniture or flooring. Once you're in, they treat you well. They invite you in to look and then they give you a hard sell. There is a cost for joining. In order to make the cost back you have to buy quite a bit of merchandise at the reduced rate to make it worthwhile.

We went to hear the presentation for Direct Buy, not having any previous experience with them and not knowing anyone who had purchased their buying service. The amount of money that they want up front is way more than we expected. They try to sell you on how much you'll save over time, but if you're not in the market for several big ticket items it would be difficult to justify this. We've also heard second hand that if there's ever a problem with an item you've purchased, it takes a long time to get it straightened out.

I love it. Local stores may have cheaper prices. When it comes to smaller things like knobs and faucet, and accessories, they are great. I would highly recommend it to anyone. We have been shopping with them for 6 years.

We have been with Direct Buy for a long time. They offer a list of vendors that they use that you can use for your remodeling projects, dealing directly with the company. They have discounted prices and give you access to multiple manufacturers. You can usually pay at cost instead of marked-up prices. You do have to pay cash. They take no credit cards. You do get discounted prices, which is a big benefit. They have a great selection. They have furniture, clothing, appliances, flooring, or anything to remodel your home. You can then hire your own contractor to do the work, and they offer recommendations. You can save a lot of money if you are willing to do the leg work. It is a good deal.
Description of Work: Direct Buy is where we purchased a small piece of furniture to hang my husband's suit jackets.

We joined Direct Buy when we moved to this area around 2 years ago. Yes, I do save money, but it takes a long time to get the products. It is very expensive to get the things shipped and then if I have to find an installer, I have to get rid of all my boxes. It is such a hassle. During Halloween weekend, I tried to order Christmas cards and I went in there and the girl there said that she doesn?t know how to go about it. After about 45 minutes, I had to leave and I asked her to email me the information. She emailed me and I replied to her back and I never got any information from them. I called them 8 times and I found out that she did not submit the order and never got back to me as well. I also did not get any apology from them. I don?t recommend them and suggest nobody should spend thousands of dollars to become a member.

This posting is from 2009 and things have changed a lot since then. We have a list of installers you can use at a discounted rate. They are licensed and bonded. We have staff now who are competent and can place an invitation order at any time. The ship dates are not as long and usually get to the club sooner that what is expected! I would highly recommending DirectBuy to anyone. Please give us another chance and you will realize that not only do you save money but you get great service too! Not good. I would recommend not using these people on cabinet orders.
Description of Work: I became a member with the hopes of saving money on my kitchen remodel. The cabinets were about $2000 cheaper than other cabinets however, the service that I received, the delays in reorders, and the general miscommunications were not worth the savings. The refrigerator cabinet had to be ordered 2 times because the wrong one was order, parts were missing, a door was sent that was too large and had to be reordered. The Direct Buy people didn't communicated with me immediately when an error was discovered I had to find out days later when I called them regarding another issue.

We are aware of this situation and have been diligent in resolving it. DirectBuy's 37 year history of exemplary member service is something we take very seriously and great pride in. We have attempted to have the member meet with us to resolve any outstanding issues since we are unaware of any. She has repeatedly declined that meeting. Her claim of $2,000 in savings on a $28,000 cabinet order is simply inaccurate. She has compared the high quality brand she chose to another completely different brand. Any reasonable person realizes that one must compare apples to apples. As with any order of this magnitude, small issues can occur that need to be handled. We honestly feel that they were handled expeditiously and professionally. Her claim about communicating immediately stems from our realization late on a Thursday that there was an issue and not letting her know until we had researched and discovered the resolution and then communicated it to her on Saturday morning. It is very difficult for us to imagine that being so upsetting and an example of poor customer service. Therefore, we have respectfully declined her request for a refund of her membership based on the facts as we understand them along with our documentation of the events. DirectBuy stands ready, eager and willing to provide that value and service we originally agreed to. Should that not meet the member's perspective, we would suggest and agreement to arbitration to allow a third party to hear both sides along with an agreement by both parties to respect and live with their decision. I found the presentation and the tour very informative. I can see how over many years or if you have a remodel job, this might be a good investment. This is for the person who is looking at long term savings. The owner and employees were very professional and friendly regardless of if we joined, I did not feel pressured even though they will tell you if you do not join that day, you may not join for 5 or 10 years, something like that.

The customer service people there are so awesome I cant begin to explain the quality service you get. They know the catalogs and can quickly help me find exactly what I am looking for! They have excellent follow through and customer service! Some items do take six weeks but if you custom ordered furniture from any store, you would wait that long or longer. I have received items as quick as a week before! Their isn't a lot of turnover so they know their jobs well, are committed, and they know their members. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, recommend them! I have placed a lot of orders and have had a GREAT experience every time and have saved a lot of money buying the exact same thing that would cost twice in a regular store. I have saved thousands of dollars.
Description of Work: I have been a member for about ten months. I have already saved over twice the membership fee. It is a lot of money but you save a lot more if you are building or remodeling. I compare apples to apples and save 40% generally. You know the exact amount before committing to a purchase. There is no pressure then. The buy in presentation is like an info-mercial and is now or never. It is a big decision. But I spent half the afternoon looking through the furniture catalogs and the prices justified the membership fees. You really do save that much money. They carry high quality merchandise. Damage during shipping is the shipping companies fault, not Direct Buys. Direct Buy handled the problem and even delivered the replacement piece directly to my home! I have ordered about 31 pieces and only one was damaged by the shipping company. A replacement arrived a couple of weeks later in perfect condition! They always go above and beyond!

I know they are controversial, but I really like them and get value from them. I have had a membership for more than 10 years so I got in when the buy-in fee was less than $1000. I have saved multiples of that (and the annual renewal fee). Their website is a great addition.

The events that transpired resulting in the incredible level of discontent that I had with this company is too long to explain in 1000 words. You definitely will save money but you have to be prepared to deal with lengthy waits for your product and an ineffective system of dealing with problems that arise (like furniture that arrives damaged). I had nothing but problems from the first order that I placed ($4000 worth of patio furniture). The second order that I placed was just as bad, and in this case it was for around $5000 worth of countertops. After a HUGE fight with the owners, they determined that I was not a good fit for Direct Buy and thought it best to refund my membership fee of $4500 which I was grateful for because I was ready to discontinue use and just "eat" the $4500 membership fee. We also tore out the counters, did not pay for them and waited another 2 months to have granite installed through a different source. Luckily the other company was as great as DB is bad.
Description of Work: Joined this buying club with the expectation of purchasing furniture and other interior home products at a reduced rate. The presentation that I went to gave the impression of an incredibly helpful staff with a club-like atmosphere that catered to the needs of their members. The concept is great, but the actual support that you get from the staff is non-existent. If you only care about low pricing, then this is the place for you. They will tell you that they will "look into it" and then not get back to you, or try to give you answers to placate you. Their story was consistently, "I am not getting a response from the manufacturer," and the excuse that they can't control the manufacturer and that I, "needed to understand that dealing directly with the manufacturer is different." I have a professional background in dealing with furniture manufacturers and have never run into the problems that they claimed to have.

PRICE FOR MEMBERSHIP WAS $3999 FOR THE FIRST 3 YEARS AND $199 FROM YEARS 4-10. (PAYMENT PLANS AVAILABLE.) FOUND THE SERVICE TO BE IN THE "TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE" CATEGORY, BUT MAY BE WORTH IT FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO DON'T GET PUT-OFF BY HIGH PRESSURE SALES TACTICS AND WHO CAN ENDURE WATCHING VIDEOS REGARDING THE SAME TESTIMONIALS FOR OVER 45 MINUTES. The Open House is designed to be a learning experience where you can gain insight into our unique business model, so that you can make an informed, educated decision about whether membership is right for you and your family. The benefits we provide to our members are the direct result of relationships we have developed with over 700 (500 if Canadian) brand-name manufacturers, making those relationships the key element to providing outstanding value and making DirectBuy a success. Out of respect for the retail community, we enforce a same-day decision policy so that our manufacturers’ confidential prices can’t be used as leverage against traditional retail outlets. For example, if we allow all consumers to access our pricing, they may take those prices to retail stores and demand the same prices per the stores’ price matching policies. By limiting a guest’s opportunity to join to the day they visit, we are able to satisfy and retain our manufacturer relationships. So as not to be a surprise to guests, this is explained in the brochure guests receive prior to their Open House visit.
