We had to spend a little more because we had extra work. We spent out totally about $3000 and it was worth a lot more than that because the insurance took the rest. Overall, the job was amazing. They were really wonderful. I would highly recommend them. They were clean. They were courteous. They were there when they said they were going to be there. They worked late. If they ran underneath things that were out of the ordinary, then they didn't do anything until they discuss with us first. They were just top-notch. The guy who came to look and the guys who came out to do the work were really top-notch.

Our Insurance recommended Hays & Sons as one company to contact to help us dry out & repair our basement after our sump pump failed and several inches of standing water took over our basement and soaked up a few inches into the drywall. Immediately after we called 2 men arrived to assess the damage and help set up fans and work out a plan. The process included a drying stage, removing the lower portion of drywall around most of the basement, replacing carpet, re-installing drywall & baseboards & painting. We worked with several different people from Hays & Sons and all were very professional & helpful, they kept us informed of when they would arrive or finish up for the day and what was next in the process. Hays & Sons did a great job & gave us our finished basement back. We were very happy to have found them during such an overwhelming experience.

A commode that was both clogged and continuously running eventually flooded an upstairs bathroom to the point that water came through the floor, and then through the ceiling in the family room, ruining both the drywall on the ceiling and the carpet in the family room. Hays & Sons came out, did moisture tests and mold inspections and determined where replacement and/or cleaning were needed. Immediately there were drying fans and de-humidifiers at work, halting further water damage. Once the adjustor had declared the estimates proper, Hays was out and the job completed within a day, with only cosmetic touch-up needing later address after an appropriate cure time. Even though the company was a Preferred Contractor through our insurance, they conducted themselves as though we were the sole employer. Prompt, courteous, thorough and apologetic when unavoidable inconvenience was necessary, Hays & Sons did a job that I am proud to point out to visitors in our home. Whether through insurance or individually contracted, I would unquestioningly recommend this company for restoration or remodeling projects.

They subcontracted all the work to some other company. They gave me an estimate for all the work that was going to be done. They managed the job until it was finished. They did okay. The biggest problem that I had with them was the fact that they weren’t actually doing the work. It was kind of frustrating sometimes getting updates on how things were going. I would call them and they would have to call somebody else to find out how it was going. Overall they did a pretty good job. I was very happy with all the work that got done. I didn’t get any quotes from any competitors. So I really don’t know if they were competitive. It was just easier to work with this company because they were affiliated with the insurance company. I think that the money that was spent was worth it. They were always responsive to me. But because they were dealing with somebody else, they couldn’t give me first hand information.

They were very thorough in their estimate. It was quite detailed. There was some roof damage which they did not cover or were concerned with. Their price was little high but not very extreme. As far as promptness and responsiveness were concerned the estimator did not seem to be concerned about how the water got in there. They were on time when they came out. I would consider them in the future.

I thought that the estimate was detailed and well prepared but I disagree with the recommended solution
Description of Work: This was an estimate for a water damage in my basement that was flooded during June's rain. I did not use them for 2 reasons: 1. the estimate came almost to the full amount of the insurance reimbursement 2. while the water sat for over a week (I was on vacation during the rain and I was back a week later), they did not recommend removing the carpet. My insurance inspector considered that removing the carpet and pading was a must. I went with a company that provided and estimate for and recommended the removal of the carpet and padding.

The process began in mid-March with the discovery of the damage, and today, May 27, I am moving back into my studio. There was really little down time, the longest being the wait for the formica counter top. I received periodic calls from Lisa, who is assistant to the President (I think) to be sure things were going smoothly. I appreciate their 5 year warranty on their work. I also really appreciated John's thorough communication - I always knew who was coming and when, and they also worked to accommodate my schedule. All finances were handled through our insurance company.
Description of Work: When I discovered water and mold damage in my art studio from a roof leak that had apparently been in existence for 2 years, i called our insurance company. They assigned Hays and Sons as our remediation company, and within 2 hours I had a call from their rep, and a couple of hours later the fans and the HVAC were running after they had treated the mold. I emptied my studio despite their willingness to do so as I needed access to some of the materials (lots of stuff in there), and when everything was dry, they proceeded to cut out the moldy drywall on the ceiling and 2 walls, damaged shelving, and discovered that the floor was damaged as well, and they could poke their fingers through the subflooring to the crawl space. Since I am an producing artist with a show schedule to meet, they offered to try to set up an alternative studio space in my laundry room, but that would not have worked with my medium. Then followed a series of skilled tradesmen: carpenters, plumbers (huge photographic sink that needed to be disconnected, then reconnected), flooring (vinyl needed to be replaced), cabinet company to replace the formica shelving, and finally painters. Throughout the project, John, the project manager kept me well informed and worked to expedite the process as much as possible, and kept the repair well organized. All were courteous, professional, punctual and were aware that I needed to "get back to work." We were introduced to several companies/tradesmen that we would use again independently, and would not hesitate to recommend Hays and Sons in a heartbeat.

Our experience with Hays and Sons was fantastic. Josh was our project manager and he was terrific. He was communicative and open to all our questions and ideas about the restoration. I never felt I was being pushed to choose what was fastest and easiest for them or what was the cheapest. The disaster happened Thanksgiving weekend and we had the ball rolling by early the next week. My only complaint (if you can even call it that) is that I was led to believe that the work could be done in a few days of full time work. I knew that wasn't realistic, but overall the job took much longer than even my adjusted expectation. If I could have been home all day every day for a week, then it may have happened lke that. Of course the reality is I have a life and a family. In their defense, Josh did a great job managing my expectations and speeding things up when he could. Case in point - we needed new carpet, we liked what had been destroyed, so we just wanted a close approximation of it. We chose one, but when I got to touch it, it was much thinner than what I wanted on our concrete floor. Josh had his carpet guy bring me 2 more samples that day to choose from. That little push showed me that Hays and Sons was aware of the length of this job and Josh did everything in his power to help push it along. Obviously Hays and Sons were the overall contractors for this job, so thier job was to find sub-contractors to do the work - carpet and drywall. I have had terrible experiences with sub-contractors in the past, so I was leery. I was SO impressed with the workers that came and worked in my house. They were on time (!), cleaned up after themselves and were pleasant to have around. Josh really kept on top of things. Once, he called after a day of drywall work (very dusty) to see if the guys had cleaned up to my satisfaction. I said they did an OK job, knowing they would just be back the next day and make a mess all over again. Josh said that wasn't good enough and the next day before the guys left they asked me to come downstairs to see if things were clean enough. Obviously, Josh had spoken to them and they were following through. Very impressive. So, overall, I would DEFINITELY hire Hays and Sons to work in my home again. I may request Josh as our project manager because we all know that an effective manager makes things go more smoothly than they otherwise could.
Description of Work: Hays and Sons replaced our carpet, took down our damaged ceiling, drywalled the ceiling, and replaced our crown molding in the entire basement.

Our insurance paid for it because it was an insurance claim. The project manager is no longer there but he was very timely and helpful. He stuck to the schedule for the work that needed to be done. He was available when we needed to call him to ask questions. They did a good job and they subcontracted out some things so it wasn't just them but overall they did a good job. We would recommend them.
Description of Work: We used Hays & Sons because we had a bad storm and a tree fell on our house. They were in charge of reconstructing our family room and other things. There was quite a bit of work. They replaced roofing and did quite a lot of structural fixes. They fixed gutters and anything that had to do with rebuilding part of a room in a house. They also did drywall.

Contacted the insurance company day after we discovered roof damage due to an ice storm. The insurance company contacted Hays & Sons and I received a call from them the same day. They came out that evening with 3 fans to start the drying out process. The fans were in use for 3 days. I called a few days later with questions that were answered to my satisfaction. I did ask for a billing statement for the deductible but it took a second phone call approximately 20 days later to get it. That was when I realized they had "dropped the ball" on our claim. Lisa immediately assigned a project manager and once again I received a phone call the same day from Adam to set up the time and day to start the work. They were out the next business day and started the work. It was discovered the wall and insulation was still wet so they had to wait for the ceiling and wall to dry out more before the work could be finished. Three days later, the work was completed. They did a good job, kept me informed of everything they were doing and they worked fast. Overall, I would have them again even though we did not have to use them.

I had been working all summer for them to come check the roof and fix what they were supposed to. They didn't do something right and they honored that but it took them all summer. I called them in June and I think it is finally fixed. We had some wind and rain damage that we wanted to turn in for our insurance. They said they fixed the roof damage but it still leaked. David Wigler was the one we talked to and he was very good and prompt in answering back. It took the company months to fix it. I know that they had people quitting and so on but still it took a while. We were disgusted. We are probably still going to hire them to do the other part of the roof. We got two quotes in there and they were $2000.00 cheaper to fix the damage. We had some damage so they fixed the roof and told us to go ahead and proceed on fixing the inside damage. The next big rain, the roof leaked. We told them that we wanted that fixed before we did any inside repairs. It took them all summer to do that. Dave Wigler came out and he was very nice. He always calls me right back when I leave a cell phone message but it has taken the company all summer to refix what they were supposed to. We will use them in the future because the insurance wants the cheaper quote. The insurance paid the cost to us, but we still haven't got the inside damage done. We were hoping to do that this summer too. It didn't work out and all because of Hays & Sons.
Description of Work: Hays & Sons came out in October or November 2009 and evidently throughout the summer and fixed the roof.

There was a huge lack of communication between Hays and sons keeping us informed on our plight. It was so humorous, that one day, I got a call from a rep at Hays and Sons asking us how we liked the job they did. I hated to break her heart but I told her no one had been to the house to begin repairs... She said she'd get back to me and it was a day or two before she returned a call. She too had stated that Ben was out sick. This was just a deal gone wrong from the start. Had we been able to select a different company to redo our house, we would have. Today, the 22 Feb 2010, Chris, the handyman from Hays and sons is back to finish putting up more sheetrock and insulation in our work area in the garage. They still have to paint the bathroom, reinstall the shower, reinstall the toilet, reinstall the sink and reinstall the medicine cabinet. I guess my major complaint is communication which was really nonexistent until we started complaining with our Nationwide Contact Julia Moeller in Ohio. Only then did Hays and sons seem to take an interest. I do believe they overextended themselves with different jobs to keep the $$$ coming in during the Winter season. We, unfortunately took the brunt of the delay. Every day it was something new. A couple of days, they got called over to an emergency job. Just seems ridiculous that we first reported this the 5 Jan and today is the 22 Feb and the job is just now getting close to finishing. Chris just finished painting today 22Feb and says he will return Tuesday to finish putting the sink/toilet/shower/light/medicine cabinet in.
Description of Work: We returned from our nieces wedding in western Kansas on the 4 Jan2010. We had left our home on the 29Dec2009 and returned on the 4Jan. Upon returning we found our kitchen/washing room/bathroom floor layered with water. The spigot handle on our washing maching had leaked for approximately 4-6 days. We called Nationwide Insurance, our provider, and they sent Hays and Sons to the rescue......well almost. We had called a plumber out, Carl at Marathon Service who quickly repaired the leaky spigot. Later on the 5Jan, Hays and Sons showed up in the afternoon to begin working on repairing all the affected areas. They found mold in the wall behind the washing machine, so it had evidently been leaking down the wall for a while. Midwest Remediation, a mold company specialist came in and in two days, had remove the mold and damage floor/sheetrock and put in some huge fans to clean up the crawlspace and dry out the floor. They were done on the 15 Jan. We thought we would hear back from Hays and Sons about them doing reconstruction the following week. After 3 days of no calls, I called Andy, our insurance guy and he said to call them. I called and was connected with a Brian who came out to take more pictures and get an estimate. He did that on the 20Jan and we thought we'd hear something back then. It wasnt until the following Wednesday, the 27Jan that someone showed up to get some floor estimates on a tile floor. Ben, the project manager had been out ill. Evidently our chart was put on his desk but he was out sick for a few days. A call from someone stating that would have been nice. So basically from the 27Jan to the 16 Feb, the only thing that happened was one of Hays and Sons workers, Chris showed up and worked on putting up green wall, sheet rock and some insulation in the affected areas.

As predicted when getting an estimate. See my above statements.
Description of Work: We asked for an estimate from Hays & Sons after hail storms. They inspected the roof and gave us their opinions onsite. Then we received a VERY complete estimate in writing, which I was impressed with. They were about $800 more than another company, but they were more detailed and added some damaged gutter repair to the list. Nice, courteous. We just did NOT get money from our insurance company to cover the cost of them doing the job. We did not get the work done at all. No other company won the bid.
