Working with Hays and Sons was not a good experience. We had water damage and they made repairs without checking with our insurance company so we ended up paying out of pocket. They did a terrible job painting our ceiling and their solution was to paint one stripe at the top of each wall. Now we have to paint all the walls on the first floor ourselves. They initially charged us for over $2,000 of services they did not provide. I think they hope customers don't look carefully at the bills, especially if the insurance company is paying.

The company had requested for a $1000.00 upfront payment, but after confirming with my insurance company, I was advised not to pay any upfront payment instead advised to make sure that the service should be done completely before demand for payment is made. I then called Hays and Sons, to tell them that not a dime would be paid upfront, not until the service and work has been completed. I advised the Keith and the contract coordinator Jim, to call my insurance agent and they will be the one to arranged the $1000.00 upfront payment. I have been dealing with Angie's List for quite a while and I wanted to check if the company is with Angie's List, and they were indeed listed.

Mrs. [Member Name Removed], it is our policy to collect an amount up front. It is typically either the deductible amount if it's an insurance claim or 50% of the total contract amount if it is not an insurance claim. We sincerely apologize if this does not work for you. The good news is we have not begun any of the work, so we completely understand if you rather use a different contractor. Our team will be in touch to discuss how we move forward. - Hays + Sons

Everything was completed in a reasonable amount of time. At that time of year (March/April) they were very busy with many customers experiencing similar problems due to the excessive rainfall. They probably lost about three days in completing the work due to the heavy demand on their services. hey were very prompt in arriving the first time to set up the equipment to dry-out the basement. I had replaced the sump pump, so the standing water was gone when they arrived.
Description of Work: Remediation for water in the basement due to sump pump failure, including drying-out wet areas, removing baseboards and replacing them, replacing two doors and painting three rooms.

The basement remodeling project went much slower than promised, and resulted in multiple change orders for the original scope of work to be delivered, due to missing items in the original estimate. Project was scheduled for 6 weeks, but took 6 months. Quality issues during construction were associated with drywall and carpeting. Drywall issues were fixed prior to project closeout, carpeting installation issues were not corrected. Remediation work was satisfactory. We discovered a leak in our sump line, which they repaired and applied spray on affected framing. We also had an issue with our previously installed ejector pump failing. They did a good job cleaning up the damaged carpeting, trim and drywall with minimal damage. We did not re-engage them for the finish repairs after the remediation.
Description of Work: I originally hired them for a basement finishing project, but also engaged them for two remediation projects during the past year.

[Member Name Removed], first off thank you for the review. We are glad that you were happy with the responsiveness of our team. The timeline changing was unfortunate and something we are reviewing with the team that worked on your project to make sure it doesn't happen for any future customers. We hope you give us a chance on any future projects you have to prove that this amount of timeline changes are not the norm.

Scheduled an appointment and got a phone call the day of 20 minutes prior to arrival at 930 am appt. mentioning that he needs to reschedule for weather (was cloudy but no rain) and that he did not have the correct ladder. My question is why did he not plan for it accordingly? Anyway I mention I had a few estimates and would like him to check the ceilings and that I will be paying out of pocket. Then he goes on to mention that he does insurance claim work which to me sounds like he wants to collect by maximizing his invoice versus just fixing the things I need fixed instead of a brand new roof. I was very disappointed with his demeanor. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.

We had to live in another vacant Habitat House for 3 months while our house was being fixed. Hays & Sons did a great job of cleaning up the mess. Our whole living room had to be re-done. I was amazed that because of a hole in the living room they re-stomped the living room ceiling, the kitchen and hallway ceilings too! Wow! The pictures show the damage the car did; the last 3 show the house outside and inside after we moved back in.
Description of Work: On January 2, 2011 a car crashed into our living room at 3:10 AM! The driver was drunk of course. The front of our house was ripped open and most of the contents of our living room was destroyed. The worst thing was loosing our sweet cockatiel, Tiki. He flew away! The couch was embedded in the wall; all of our furniture had to be replaced too. The porch was ripped in half, a little wall that comes out from the porch was broken to pieces too.

They offered me a senior discount, and a warranty. They were a little more costly, there was a $1000 difference. They were good and reasonable. There cost were in the same ballpark. They did charge more for my roof incline. They charged more for a water seal and the company that did it, gave it to me for free. They did come out and I was able to talk to them. I think they were very good. I think they were good to work with. He came out and explained things to me. If I needed contract work I would contact them.

Quality ended up being satisfactory but only after having to call back a number of times to address needed work. Additionally, after originally agreeing to do the work, Estimator from Hays & Sons called and left a voice mail at approximately 5:00 p.m. on a Friday that Hays & Sons is cancelling the work, when work was scheduled to begin on Monday. After calling the main office to complain, the Estimator called on Sunday to inform me I must have misunderstood, even though we had Hays & Sons commitments in email exchanges. Most promises on schedules and scope of work were not kept; dates and times when contractor or their subs were to show up were repeatedly missed. Also, when they failed to show up, no one called to say so forcing us to wait and finally having to call to find out when they would show up. Additionally, many different project managers and contacts were assigned, which made communications with the company very, very challenging. Scope of work that was billed for in original submitted bill was not completed, so bill had to be redone. Very impersonal service and many, many broken promises, with what appeared like, very little regard. After taking so much longer and based upon our experiences with Hays & Sons we were faced with, the scope of work was reduced and Hays & Sons was told they would not complete the original scope of work.

Our insurance company recommended them- We had them come out and do an estimate and a review of the work. They did a good job of looking at all the damage and estimating what needed to be done. They did 2 projects for the repair. They replaced the cracked brick and they replaced the broken deck pieces. The brick work was good. They were not able to match the brick exactly but got a somewhat close match. In all fairness the house is 50+ years old it would be hard to match exactly. Then they worked on the deck thats where things fell apart. They did not match all the wood we used on the deck, only the composite decking did they match. The boards did not line up properly on all the decking they did and they actually installed one facia board upside down. When asking them about fixing this they denied any wrong doing, and then proceeded to tell us we installed the deck incorrectly to begin with. This is even with their review of the boards and the very obvious board that was installed upside down. Essentially they took their extremely overpriced job and ran with it. They did not honor their warrenty and were more than rude about explaining why. I would not use them again in the future. I did also warn my insurance company about not using them in the future either. Their prices are inflated and their quality is subpar.

It was after hours when they were needed. I received a call quickly and a person was dispatched to cover the areas of the roof that had lost shingles. I was asked if I wanted a quote and said yes. I cannot recall if it was then or the next day when someone looked over the damages inside and out and offered their proposal. When my insurance company appraiser came out he commented that this company had used quality material to cover the areas, not the blue tarps on can buy for 15$. He said those break down quickly in the sunlight. I am reviewing this proposal and another one I have and will make a determination soon. As cold as it has been it is not advised to put shingles on from all I have read and been told.

See above. Don't hire them. I was promised that there was a 5 yr warranty on their work. I welcome anyone to come and see their work. I guarantee you won't hire them.
Description of Work: My condo association hired them after my neighbor had a fire. I had just purchased my condo and spent 30,000 in repair costs. I had replaced all doors flooring and Windows. After the fire Hays & Sons had to replace my flooring and ceilings because they fell through them. The floor was so poorly put down that they had to tear it up and redo. When they took the floor up we discovered water under it. My new patio door leaked. They never tried to find the cause of the leak. After waiting 3 months, they put down another floor. It also was done poorly. The baseboards pulled away from the walls as the floor did not float. The owner came out and fixed the ceiling and baseboards. The floor is warped and my patio door leaks. At this point they refuse to do anything else. My neighbors are having electrical surges and the light over my garage door will not shut off because of their work.

Nationwide, my insurance provider, "strongly encouraged" I use this company as they were a preferred provider. That basically meant that all other estimates I provided were declined. Hays came in and took care of the mold remediation. They gutted the bathroom and my hallway. The remediation took a while but I had minimal complaints with that process. The problems occurred during the restoration. Hays took weeks after the remediation to start work. Then they would only come in one day a week and do something minor. The mold was discovered August 1st of 2015 and I fired them in November. I would call both insurance and Hays to try to get them to move faster. It didn't work. Here is the biggest issue. I had previously had a porcelain bathtub. Hays told me I could only get a standard tub and they had one in stock. I said ok and they installed a fiberglass tub. I went to my estimate and saw that they had budgeted about $1000 for a new tub. The fiberglass tub cost about $100. When I called to ask about this, I never received an answer. They had told me that even though the estimate called for concrete board behind the shower, that what I really needed was green board. I, not being an expert here, agreed. As it turns out, that is against code and all of it had to be replaced. I fired them after lack of communication over the tub and the substantial time it was taking to complete the job. When I had the new contractor in to finish everything, they discovered that Hays had improperly installed the vanity and had caused a leak in the crawlspace, leading to more mold! I hired Tremain to come out to repair and finish everything, it took 4 days!
Description of Work: Hays provided mold remediation and began the process of restoration. There was a leak in the wall of my shower that had been going on for quite some time leading to massive mold. They were terminated during the restoration process.

[Member Names Removed]. We take these reviews seriously. I've researched our system and I cannot find a job under your name or at your address. I would like to look into this for you. Did we do work for you at another address or under a different name? There is also a Hayes and Sons and an H&R that we at times get confused with. Please advise so I can look into this and get it resolved. Thank you. ~Chris

The company was initially contacted to remove dry wall and to provide mold remediation if needed. The crew did a great job at removing the part of the ceiling that was saturated. The contractor then informed me they could provide additional services to repair other areas of the ceiling, but when an appointment was made, the contractor cancelled. I then tried again to reach out to the company and was told they would be by the next day. They never showed.

They did a good job, but the their work always seems to take a little longer than a normal contractor. Plus, the 10% retention fees are high. I would use them again on major corporate jobs, but when you contract them for smaller work they don't put put forth the manpower that they promise.

They did a lot of work that they didn't need to do in order to make the bill higher. They used the wrong size drywall to replace the drywall. I am very unhappy with the results thus far. I am still trying to work with them to make this right, but really at this point the experience has been so horrible it is time to share it so maybe I can protect others from this. This company is an absolute nightmare. Calls often have slow response times. This company has not been on time once. Often the workers either don't show up until we call to ask where they are, or they show up very late, 11 am and on more than one occasion, in the evening! Last night they arrived at 6:28PM. On the day they were to begin to start the project they arrived around 2:30PM. The following day, around 11:30AM. Frequent No call/No show. An example is they were supposed to return to finish work not completed on 7/22. They did not show up or call. When we finally heard from them (we called them they, made no effort to contact us), they claimed it was because of the rain. They say this every time they don't make an appointment. However, they were due to show up on Tuesday. It rained on Wednesday. So, you missed the appointment because it was going to rain tomorrow? The quality of work is abysmal. They removed all the old shingles and laid new ones as agreed, but they did not install the new ones in straight lines, they are wavy and there are exposed nails and there is a valley so a future leaks to watch for now. On some work asked for in the front of the house they installed wood at crooked angles and left materials in my driveway. When it rained yesterday it was all uncovered, so now I have warped plywood in my driveway. They also cut pieces too short and then cobbled other pieces around it to try and make it okay. It looks awful. My house is old and I am trying to fix it up, but instead they made it worse. They also used they wrong kind of screws, so they will rust. They left trash on my roof and nails on the ground. They had a wife keep showing up and hanging out in my yard and even my porch while her kids waited in the car for up to an hour. Unprofessional. I went with these people because my insurance provider recommended them. I am calling my insurance provider to ask they do not suggest this company again and STRONGLY ADVISE ALL OTHERS TO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Roof replaced right over rotted wood in multiple places, they left the rotted wood. They also dented existing gutters leaning ladders. They did replace this and did a little extra work to tr and make it right. It was likely during this point they dented my car. They know they did it, but after a week of we will address this, I have no update of HOW they will address it. They said they would fix it and left a bundle of shingles in my yard so long that when we finally moved it (no call no show during this time) the grass was totally dead underneath. They dropped something on my car and said nothing hoping I would not notice. UPDATE :Roof started leaking in a new place after their "work". Every time we call they say they will address it. But this is becoming meaningless after MONTHS of trying to get them to make this right. At this point I would not trust them to adequately roof a dog house.

I had no issue with Hay's and sons other than their selection of sub contractors. Had no issues with the main crew that was used, but the flooring crew installed defective carpet, and improperly installed the wood laminate flooring. Hay's and sons did not dispute or disagree when I pointed out the issues, they had a separate crew come in and fix the issues in the end. I am still waiting on a credit due to cleaning we had to do due to the first flooring crew sawing the wood laminate inside the house. Everything else was completed as expected and on time. They also informed me that they would be using a different sub contractor for flooring moving forward.

Initial contact after reporting the incident to my insurance company was prompt. Because the nature of the damage was not serious and the contents of the garage were not exposed to the elements I did not need immediate service. With that in mind, an estimator made contact in a few days, scheduled a time to perform the estimate and promptly returned detailed and fully itemized results. After these initial activities, things slowed down. The estimator misplaced my paperwork and thus I did not get contacted by a Project Manager until over a week had passed from the receipt and acceptance of the estimate. Subsequently, the project manager had to reschedule several appointments. Because the damage to my garage was not severe, I accepted the delays. However, had the damage been more serious, my expectations would have been considerably higher. All communications during this period were prompt, professional, and courteous. Once the work was scheduled, it came off without a hitch and I am very satisfied with the result. Bottom Line: Quality work, good communication (mostly), good professionalism, need to improve on time management.
Description of Work: Performed repairs to garage wall that had been damaged by a car running into it. Repairs needed included: foundation blocks pushed out of place, the base stringer was cracked and broken as were several of the supporting 2 x 4's, straighten wall and and siding, service window bent, service door entry way misaligned so that the service door could not close and latch.

Summary: Initial contact was good. Estimator came out and did a very thorough job, however project manager was very inexperienced and had communication issues with entire company. Details: After a tornado ripped through my town, Hays and Sons was recommended by my insurance company. I contacted them and they immediately came out (within 2 days) to do an estimate. A very professional and accurate estimate was given and it was submitted to my insurance company. Once they received the insurance check, the project was assigned to a project manager. It was almost two weeks of me calling the company to get the project manager to call me. He came out and we reviewed the work that needed to be done. With the difficult winter we've had, he had approximately four months to get everything arranged. The roof was put on with no significant issues, however the rest of work was an issue. I provided him a sample of our siding so he could color match. He called me back and said that he was unable to find the exact match but found something comparable. The project manager would e-mail me a date for the install to happen and then that day would come and go with no work done. I would call and e-mail with limited response. After the siding was put up (over 4 months after the initial call), the color was very different. When I started asking the project manager about it, he told me to talk to my insurance company as he had "looked all over the state to find a color match with no luck." I then called the project manager's supervisor who stated that he would look into it. After a week of not hearing, I went to my local Menard's and found the exact siding we already had. I left a voice mail for the supervisor and let him know about this. He finally called me back and said that they would replace the siding. He scheduled a day to do the siding, but that day came and went without any work (weather was not an issue). I e-mailed the supervisor and after a week and a half, received an e-mail back to reschedule. I asked him to let me know if there would be any changes. Again, that day came and went, with no contact. I e-mailed the supervisor again last Friday asking when the work was going to be done. While I was gone on Saturday, the crew came in and did the work, leaving a large wooden pallet as the box that the siding had come in in my yard. Today, I received an e-mail from the supervisor stating that he had not received word that the work had not been done over the weekend. I explained that the last word I had was the work was supposed to have been done last Tuesday. I then asked him about the last little amount of work that needed to be done. It is currently scheduled for this afternoon.
Description of Work: Replaced roof, new siding on 1/4 of house, installed new window.
