See above. They had a narrow time frame to do the work and got it done.
Description of Work: Took down a couple of large trees in my front yard and ground out the stump and much of the root system. Have used them before. Very competitive on price, very responsive, and clean everything up nicely. I have a big, wooded lot and will use them again.....assuming their prices continue to be competitive.

The workers were here from 9-5:30 and finished the job well. They worked hard all day and got a lot done in a day's time. They cleaned up well after the job. We were very happy. Money well spent.
Description of Work: We used the day rate to have many trees take down on our overgrown property as well as some trimming of overgrown trees. They also ground up more than 10 stumps from previously cut trees for us.

In August, 2008, I met with the Owner, Andrea. Her first words to me were how ?relieved? she was when she first pulled up that ?they did a good job? because she was ?expecting something really bad.? When I explained that other Arborists did not agree, she dismissed their feedback claiming they ?would have an agenda and agree with the homeowner.? When she asked what I wanted, I said I wasn?t sure because I really wanted my trees back, but didn?t yet have a clear picture about whether they could be salvaged. I wanted her to see them, get her reaction and see what options she might present. During our conversation she said twice that she ?felt taken.? When I asked what exactly she meant, she said she ?could see me being a homeowner who wouldn?t be satisfied? and that ?even though the River Birches would look fine I would insist they be removed.? Then she said she was ?concerned that I just didn?t want the River Birches,? and questioned why I would ?want trees that big so close to my house?? I simply replied that ?all these issues are irrelevant?you took my trees.? She said ?the trees weren?t going to look like before,? to which I replied, ?of course not, with a broken limb, but even Luke said they were cut too hard.? She said ?they really weren?t?they do this all the time and a lot of homeowners are very pleased.? I reminded her that I couldn?t have been more clear about my concerns with Luke. In the discussion, she kept referring to their work as ?Crown Reduction,? to which I clarified that I didn?t hire them for Crown Reduction. She insisted the trees were not ?Topped,? because then they would have been trimmed ?where there would be no leaves.? We discussed other Arborist standards, and she agreed that no more than 30% of a tree should be removed to retain its health. When I told her they removed a good 50%, she disagreed despite admitting that she ?never saw the trees before.? I showed her a picture from 2 years prior (with 2 years less growth), and she still insisted it wasn?t more than 30%. She maintained that the ?trimming and shaping? was a ?good job.? In the end, Andrea did concede that ?I was very specific in what I wanted, and they didn?t do what I asked.? We reached an agreement that: 1) they would remove the missed broken limbs, 2) I would wait until the following May, and if I didn?t like how the trees looked they would replace them with new River Birches, and 3) she would put the agreement in writing. Then Andrea called a few days later to say that she did not want to honor the agreement. She reiterated that she ?felt she was cheated,? that I ?did fine,? and that she ?didn?t feel she owed me anything further.? I simply said I was not surprised. It has been over a year, my River Birches look like ugly pear trees, and I cannot accept the destruction to my trees, landscaping and home. I can outline for Broad Ripple Tree Service what I will accept as an appropriate resolution, through this forum or another, if required.
Description of Work: In July, 2008, I hired Broad Ripple Tree Service to remove a large broken limb from a River Birch in front of my house. The signed agreement was to "thin, shape & reduce weight on the ends of the limbs" of 2 River Birches and "remove the broken section.” I rearranged my client schedule to be there, but they changed the time they were coming and I couldn't rearrange it again. For this reason, along with knowing enough about pruning to be cautious, I had 3 separate conversations with the Arborist, Luke, to clarify the work exactly. Luke assured the competence of their trimmers and defined the purpose of "thinning" as raising the low-hanging branches and pruning carefully to reduce the risk of other branches breaking. The broken branch was not one of the main trunks, and I stressed that I did not want much removed. When I came home that day, I was stunned. My River Birches were less than half their height. When I spoke with Luke, he strongly defended their work, sight unseen. He said that they had “removed the heavy branches at the top so they wouldn’t break,” even though “Crown Reduction” was never discussed or checked on the contract. When I insisted he see for himself, he said he was very busy. He finally agreed to go that day, but then refused to meet with me directly. He said that I should have been there when the work was done, but I reminded him that they changed the appointment time. I asked why he insisted I needed to be there when the work was done, but not after the work was done and there was a problem. I stressed that he call immediately after seeing the trees since they already had my check for $525. When he didn’t call, I stopped payment on the check. Luke’s response after seeing the trees was that “they do this all the time.” When I reminded him of our discussion about pruning sparingly, he finally admitted that the trees were “cut too hard.” He then said the trees would come back fine in the Spring, but that I could take it up with the Owner. At the end of the conversation, he told me that I “got the work done for free,” as if I should be grateful and leave it at that. Before talking to the Owner, I met with 4 reputable Arborists to get their assessment of the seriousness of the damage. They all described the trees as "Topped" and expressed concern that they were now stressed and vulnerable to disease, that the landscaping and aesthetics were destroyed because the main trunks were removed and they would not grow vertically again, and that the trimming itself was terrible (they left broken and dead limbs, there was no appropriate systematic removal of branches to thin the tree, cuts were not clean, pruning was in the wrong places, etc.). They insisted that regardless of my having given explicit instructions, no reputable tree company should have cut so much of the tree. Even my neighbor said he was surprised when the trimmer told him “the homeowner was concerned about not taking off too much” because they seemed to be "hacking away randomly.”

Response from Broad Ripple Tree Service Inc
As the member explained, she hired us to remove a "large broken limb" on a damaged River Birch tree (located on the left in the photographs). She also wanted us to shape this damaged tree and shape the smaller tree next to it (located on the right in the photographs). The member insists that, "The broken branch was not one of the main trunks." This is false. The "large broken limb" in question was one of the two main stems on the tree. To further complicate matters: when our arborists arrived at the residence they discovered that the second main stem on the damaged tree was also broken towards the top. This second break was not visible from the ground. The breaks present in each stem gave the crew no choice but to make a cut just below the breaks. They made the cuts and proceeded to shape the tree. They did a good job given the state of the heavily damaged tree. This type of storm damage is extremely common with river birch trees. Of course, the crew still had to shape the smaller tree, located to the right. The lead arborist reduced the smaller tree's crown slightly more than usual. The idea being that the wind-compromised tree would not look as out of place if the trees matched in height. This intent is evident in the photographs. In hindsight, our professional arborist should have approved this aesthetic decision with the customer. However, the young tree will outgrow this crown reduction in a very few growing seasons. The member expressed her complaint after the work was completed. Our certified arborists investigated the situation and explained to the member that both stems on the storm-affected tree were damaged by wind beyond repair. We explained that in no way was the tree "topped" except perhaps by the hand of nature. Even in our conversations the member seemed to ignore this key fact, even though she admits she initially called us out to repair a"large broken limb." We agreed not to charge her for the work in order to resolve the matter. We strongly believe the complaint warrants no financial consideration. We have been in business since 1983 and recently received the Angie's List 10-year Super Service Award. A big reason for our success is our desire to fix our mistakes. In this instance we do not feel a mistake was made, but we still gave the member a 100% refund. I believe this decision is indicative of our efforts to make sure our customers are completely satisfied.

I cannot say enough good things about this company. They are very prompt in their estimates and very polite to deal with on the phone. I was away when they came to do the work, but I put garden tape on each tree I wanted removed. When I got back they were all gone, plus all the rubbish was gone. The crab is much better now. You just can't get better service than this company provides!

They were very prompt in responding to us. They tried to get the trees out as quickly as they could. We were having heavy rains and they brought trucks and did put a sort of track pads. It still left some ruts in the ground. I was a little disappointed in that they left a couple of deep impressions when the cut off the trees. They left the yard in a kind of bad shape. Their price was good and they showed up when they said they would.

On a Fri. I submitted a estimate request by e-mail at 9 am and someone was out to look at the job at 10:30 am the same day. I received an estimate on the spot after discussing what I wanted done and they also gave some suggestions what to do. I emailed them back at noon that I wanted them to do the work and they called by 1:30 PM to schedule for the following Mon. afternoon. They showed up late due to a previous job but it was not a problem since it was the end of the day. Completed all work including very good cleanup in 3 hours. They also reduced the price by 5% due to Angie's List coupon.

They came in and took down 3 trees in my yard and ground the stumps deep enough that I can replant in the same area with no trouble. They then took out 2 trees for my next door neighbor and ground those stumps. The then cleaned up behind them selves and the yard looked better and cleaner after they left!

Description of Work: Took down a large 3 trunk tree that had one trunk leaning over my house, leaning more and more each year. They came in on a rainy day and used a cheery picker to top the tree and then took thhe rest down. I did not have to take down any wires and they used lagre, thick rubber mats so the grass in the back yard was not damaged. They cleaned up the yard when they were done and did a great job!

I called office to schedule an appraisal and was provided a date and time for estimate. Jerry showed up and looked at both trees and explained that both would be trimmed approx 3-5 feet back and shaped. I called back later and set a date for service to be performed. The crew was supposed to be at my home at 9am and I was called by office and told they were running late and would be there approx 9:30am. Crew showed up at 9:30 and crew leader asked how far back the trees should be trimmed, I explained that I was told 3-5 feet by Jerry at the time of estimate. As the crew setup I called the office and talked to receptionist about how the crew leader was not sure on the amount to trim and I wanted to make sure of the length we discussed, she called Jerry and he spoke to crew chief. As they started the job I noticed that the limbs being cut were much larger than 3-5 ft and were closer to 8-9 feet. I spoke to the crew chief and was told that Jerry told them to cut back to previous cut, which was the 8-9 foot lengths. The previous trim was performed 6 or 7 years earlier. I called the office again and asked to speak to Jerry, I explained to Jerry what was going on and he told me that is was we discussed at the time of the estimate. I said it was not and that we discussed 3-5 feet. Jerry then asked "Who do you think you are" and I said ?I was the owner of the of the tree you are cutting?. He then became very angry and started to curse at and told me to go f*** myself and he hung up. I called back and asked to speak to the owner and found out at that time that Jerry was the owner. He continued to curse at me and call me Fishers white trash. He told me I knew nothing about trees and to shut up and let them do the job. I asked Jerry what he knew about trees and he stated he was the owner, I then asked who the arborist was that was listed on his business card and was told that it was his wife and son. I asked if either of them were on site to see what was being cut and was told that the crew leader was a smart person and knew what he was doing. The job at this time was almost 1/2 done and the tree was butchered. I told him the progress his crew was making and he said to let them complete the job and fix what was done and he would do so at no charge. If the progress on cutting the tree was not so far I would kicked them off the property but felt that they were responsible to fix what they did. Once the 1st tree was completed the crew stopped and I was met by Terry from Broad Ripple Tree. He told me the tree looked ok and it would be ok by next spring. He then asked about the 2nd tree. I showed him the tree and discussed what he recommended, at that time I decided that I had had enough of Broad Ripple tree and we both agreed that the job was done and they needed to leave the property. Another tree company inspected the 1st tree that was trimmed and said appeared as if it was shaped by a chainsaw as you would shape a shrub.

I requested an estimate on their website, and was told they would come the next day to have a look (I can't remember if they emailed or called). The estimator actually came the same day and gave me a written estimate. I called and was able to schedule the work within the week. The only problem we ran into was that they were supposed to be there at 9:00 and they ran about a half hour late; I had to call the office to find out where they were. It would have been nice if they would have called to let me know they were going to be late. Other than that very minor thing, everything went very well. There was a crew of about five or six men, and they all knew who was doing what and everything was completed quickly and efficiently. They cleaned everything (branches, leaves, etc.) up - I think our yard was cleaner when they left than it was before they came. I think it took them about an hour to finish the job. My biggest concern about getting the trees over the roof trimmed had been that they would end up looking all chopped up, but they look beautiful. The branches are completely off the roof, but everything still looks very natural and healthy.

It went very well. It would have been nice to have been given some instructions on how to water and care for the new tree, though.
Description of Work: Excellent job on trimming a tree in front of my house ($75). They also removed a huge dead evergreen tree ($325) and planted a very nice ~6ft Colorado Blue Spruce tree in it's place ($375). I asked them to choose the best specimen they could find and they selected a wonderful tree. One year warranty on the tree which is great. They left the site clean and hauled away the dead tree. They were the lowest of the three estimates I obtained and they did a great job. Also, the other two companies only offered a six-month warranty on their trees. I highly recommend this company.

As in our past experiences with Jerry Dunlevy and his crew, we were given expert advice, a fair price on the work, and prompt, thorough services. They did exactly what we had agreed upon, (including saving sections of the tree for my brother's woodworking) in a careful and complete manner, and thoroughly cleaned up the area. As always, we were completely pleased with their work.

I spoke with Luke about my situation and that I had some work done by another tree company who I hired and payed before they had finished the job of cutting down 5 major trees. M & J tree service said they'd be by the next day but never showed up again. Luke then came by to assess my yard and was appauled by the mess these guys had left. Luke quoted me a very fair estimate at 2:00PM in the afternoon and by 3:00PM the same day they were out finishing the job. They were very neat, and professional, and my yard looked a 100 times better after they were done. I would highly recommend Broad Ripple tree service for any work you need to have done; they are fair and competitive. I will be hiring them again for additional work in the back of my home.
Description of Work: They finished a job that another tree service company started and quit. They sawed the remaining 5 trees down to the stump then grinded the stumps below the ground. They cleaned up the entire front yard, and raked. They even raked out the remains of the bark from the stump grinder, and hauled everything away.

The work was done in June of 2007. We have recently learned the cableing work, at least in our opinion, was not performed in accorance with published work standards for Aborists (ANSI A300 Standard). The limbing was fine. The contractor was responsive, came to our property to evaluate the work, provided an estimate and performed the work as quoted. At the time we were satisfied though we had a small dispute with the contractor. At the time work was done one of the limbs that was cut off left a "hollow" entending into the tree. The worker said he did not have the materials to cover the hole and would come back to fix it. We had to call several times. When they did come and perform the work they presented another bill for $125.00. When I called the owner to complain he was very rude but angrily told me not to pay it. I did not. This past January we noticed some of the cables were frayed and the eye hooks used were bending open. The contractor claims he came out and inspected the work and that it was fine. We never saw him nor did he volunteer a report. We called several times before getting the the "results" of the "inspection". We have doubt that an inspection was ever performed. Open ended eye hooks were screwed in the limbs. Standards recommend closed (Welded) eye hooks that can not open. The hooks should have been drilled through the branches with a nut and washer on the opposite side of the eye to resist pulling out. The cables seemed undersized at the time but I was assured they were strong enough. Since they are failing now I do not believe this was true. The ANSI standard recommends cableing 2/3 up the branch being supported. The cables are not nearly that high and basicly were installed as high as the "bucket" on the truck could reach. I have contracted with another aborist to properly perform the work. This will cost me an additional $875.00. The tree is close to my house and could cause major damage to my home, or potentially cause injury. Needless to say I am very unsatisfied with the work performed by Broad Ripple Tree Service, Inc.

WE APPRECIATE THE CUSTOMER'S CONCERN. OUR CERTIFIED ARBORISTS HAVE REVIEWED THIS CASE AND BELIEVE HIS DECISION TO REINSTALL THE CABLES IS UNNECESSARY AND UNFOUNDED. THE CABLES WERE INSTALLED ACCORDING TO ANSI STANDARDS AND HELD UP FINE IN LAST SUMMER'S EXTREME WINDS. OUR OWNER, A QUALIFIED ARBORIST, VISUALLY INSPECTED THE CABLES IN FEBRUARY AND NOTED THEY WERE IN SATISFACTORY CONDITION. HE DIDN'T NOTE THE "FRAYING" OR BENDING THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS CONCERNED ABOUT. INDEED, 7-STRAND EXTRA HIGH STRENGTH CABLE WILL NOT FRAY. WHAT THE CUSTOMER WAS SEEING WAS THE TAIL END OF A "TREE GRIP" WHICH IS USED TO CONNECT THE CABLE TO THE TREE. ACCORDING TO ANSI, EXACT PLACEMENT OF CABLES DEPENDS ON THE LOCATION OF LATERAL BRANCHES AND DEFECTS. HAD WE INSTALLED CABLES FURTHER UP WE WOULD HAVE RISKED PLACING THEM IN BRANCHES THAT ARE TOO SMALL. WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED CABLES FOR 20 YEARS AND WE APPRECIATE THIS CHANCE TO RESPOND.

I had received an estimate from Jerry a few months ago, along with several other tree service companies and BR Tree Service was significantly lower than the other estimates even though our back yard has extremely limited access and they would not be able to use big equipment. I contacted them last week to see if they would discount for doing the work in winter and he agreed. (They subsequently also agreed to discount a little more for cash.) His crew was out on Monday and had the whole job done & mostly cleaned up by Tuesday afternoon. When I mentioned that it would have been nice to have the sidewalks cleaned off, he had someone come out the next day to take care of it - and blew the snow off all the sidewalks too! It was great to work with such a good company.

I have used this company before with great results. They are professional and efficient. They do such a thorough clean up that you would not know that they were here. They have maintained their level of service and I feel that they price was reasonable.
Description of Work: I had them remove one large tree and trim up and stabilize another large tree.

Mr. Dunlevy came to give an estimate the day after our call to the office. The estimate given, he called next day asking for our decision and we agreed to have them start the next day. A section of our back fence had to be taken down to get in the truck. Work was started on the removal of a large oak tree. His men worked in unison to bring the tree down in small sections. They were highly competent and performed their jobs with extreme speed and accuracy. We have never seen a group of men work so hard to complete a job. We were very impressed. Mr. Dunlevy was on the scene part of the time overseeing his men. After the large tree was cut and hauled away, they proceeded to cut the dead wood out of another large oak tree. All wood was hauled off and yard was raked and cleared of all remaining debris. And finally they replaced the fence to its original position. A very difficult and dangerous job was completed with extreme satisfaction.
Description of Work: Removal of large oak tree and the cutting out of deadwood from another very large oak.
