Owner came out to measure and prepare quote Received quote in timely fashion Workers who installed/cleaned/waxed did a wonderful job All were friendly, courteous and mannerly The church had a serious leak from the boiler steam line going through wall in the room. Big Dog immediately came out to inspect the tiles in that area for damage and took care of any problems.
Description of Work: Laid a new tile floor in the church's Youth Room Cleaned tiles & gave 2 coats of wax

The first impressions were very good. I went to the store and it was a lovely flooring store. Christine was very nice, we sat down and we talked about what I wanted to have done. We set up a time for someone to come out and do the estimate. The owner came out and he was very personable, very measured. He did everything and explained the process to me, what and how it would be done. I am inclined to go with this company. They had the edge because they're a Southside store and I live on the Southside and I'm inclined to use what's in my area.
Description of Work: Big Dog Flooring came out and gave me an estimate. The first estimate as a little less than $2,000 and that's for sanding, refinishing, applying 2 coats of polyurethane, and staining. The second estimate was for 2 other rooms and that was about $1,300.

We are sorry this happened, but we have gone thru our deleted emails, voice mail recorder and our phone message book of all calls that come in daily going back to the first of April. We have no record of (removed member name) requesting a quote or measure. Sincerely, The Staff at Big Dog Flooring

The two carpet layers arrived on time and where extremely friendly. Started right away with the biggest room and had that completed in an hour and a half easily. I am the type that is curious how things are done so upfront I asked if I could observe how it was being laid, and they had no problems with that, in fact they where explaining everything to me. The whole install took two and a half to three hours and the place looks and feels great! I will certainly be returning to Big Dog Flooring If I have to replace any other floor in the future for any house that I have in this area.
Description of Work: Took out the carpet in the master bedroom, master closet, master storage room, living room, small hallway and small closet. Then replaced those areas with a new pad and carpet. Had the Angies list 15% off as well, which always helps.

Very prompt. Installed the day after measurement and estimate. Installer was one of the best. Second job done by Big Dog. A couple of years ago had wood flooring installed in LR and Hall. Get lots of compliments. One minor problem by transition to kitchen which should be repairable. All in all good job.

The 15% discount off materials provided by Big Dog Flooring made them the low cost service provider. Discussion with Chip and team during the estimating process was excellent. A delay in receiving the carpet awaiting the mill to run that line to produce the caret. Their installer did an outstanding job in removing the old material and installing the new carpet. Very pleased with their service.

This second install I offered the installers my shop vacuum to use but they did not use. They used their broom and had another dust storm in the house. This is very inconsiderate on their behalf. This time around Donnie did not take the time to draw a template for a difficult cut. He patched boards together to get the wood to fit in one place. This looks very bad. I even had another hardwood floor company come to my house and that is the first thing they saw. During this second install I noticed that the hardwood floor boards have dimples and cracks in the wood where every staple was put in. I call Chip the next morning and tell him about it. I tell the owner to call the installers an tell them to come pick up their tools. They did and they told me they have never seen wood do this before. They take the remaining uninstalled wood and their tools and leave my house. I ask Chip to get a hold of the manufacture and ask them to come take a look at this floor. He said he would but as it turns out ? HE NEVER DID CALL the representative from the manufacture. A month goes by and there is no phone call from Chip or the manufacture. Again no communication from the store owner and he still has $5000.00 of my money. I ask another company who carries and installs Somerset Hardwood Floors. They come to my house and they tell me the pressure was set to high in the power nailer. They have seen this before and they are about 100 percent sure that is the problem. They say very rarely is it a problem with the wood. I then read on Somerset?s web site in the installation instructions that they talk about this very problem. It is in a note to the installers section. Now it sure looks like Big Dog Flooring installers DO NOT read installation instructions! I still hear nothing from the owner. I call him. I get his voice mail. I tell him on his voice mail what another company tells me. He calls me back and says yes he knew it was the pressure set too high. WHY DID HE NOT TELL ME THIS FOUR WEEKS AGO WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST HAPPENED? POOR POOR COMMUNICATION ON HIS PART! Chip decides to send all the flooring back to the distributor without even asking me! AT THIS POINT HE STILL HAS $5000.00 OF MY MONEY AND NO FLOORING. Again Chip cannot be professional enough to call me himself ? he has one of his store salesman call me and ?Chip has sent the floor back and will be calling you the first of next week to discuss?. CHIP DID NOT CALL AS HE SAID HE WOULD. A week goes by and I call CHIP early in the morning. We speak and he says he will call me back in one hour. HE NEVER CALLED BACK. I call him that afternoon ? Chip says he was too busy to call. REALLY? How UNPROFESSIONAL is that? He decides to refund $3500.00 out the $5000.00 I put down. He kept money for the first 200 square feet that was installed without being laid out first as per Somerset?s web site. He charged me for the installer?s time for the first 200 square feet that was installed. Remember they did not follow the manufacture?s instructions. To top if off he CHARGED ME FOR A RESTOCKING FEE BASED ON A DECISION HE MADE WITHOUT TALKING TO ME BEFORE HE SENT THE WOOD BACK. I AM GIVING BIG DOG FLOORS AN ?F? FOR EVERY CATEGORY! AN ?F? GRADE FOR BIG DOG FLOORS IS STILL TOO GOOD OF A GRADE FOR THE SERVICE I RECEIVED FROM THEM. This complaint is being filed with Angie?s List, Better Business Bureau, and Somerset Hardwoods Incorporated.
Description of Work: Remove carpeting and install Somerset hardwood flooring. Take it from me and do yourself a favor DO NOT HIRE BIG DOG FLOORS! Please read on. Discussed hardwood floor project with Chip owner of Big Dog Floors. We told him we wanted to do business with a company that would not only do the hardwood floors but could also put us in touch with someone who could install new base board moldings, quarter round and casings around the interior doors. The owner of Big Dog Floors – Chip said “My installers are not subs, they are employees of Big Dog Floors and they do it all. They will do a great job for you”. Based upon these comments we decided to hire Big Dog Floors on December 29, 2012 by giving them a check for $5000.00 as down payment to install 1080 square feet of Somerset Engineered ½ inch Character Collection white oak 3.5 & 5.0 inch width floors. Chip said he would call the order in the next week and get back with us on a delivery date. Chip called us the following week and said the flooring would be in on the following Monday and they would deliver it to our house so it could be at room temperature before they started the install on the next day after delivery to our house. We heard nothing from Chip until the next Tuesday morning when he called me while I was on my way to work saying the installers were on there way to our house to start the install. I said to him “Chip you said you would deliver it to my house yesterday so it would warm to our house temperature before you started the install today”. Chip said I did not need to since it is stored here at 68 degrees. Why did he not call and say he would not be delivering so we could have planned accordingly? We had not moved anything or packed anything in the house because we had heard nothing from Chip. I had to call my wife home from work to help me pack a curio cabinet so they could start the install that day and had to arrange time off from work that day. In our contract we were going to be charged for the moving of furniture. I was OK with that and agreed to pay the charge since I am handicapped and cannot use my right arm to lift. The installers Donnie Cooper and Mike ? were very lazy and pretty much unwilling to move furniture. So my son, wife and I moved most of it. This should have been the second indication that this job was going to be a FAILURE. At this time I am disgusted with them but I do not say anything. The job starts by removing about one half of the carpeting in the great room. They do no bring a shop vac with them. They bring a broom and dust pan. While sweeping the dust from the carpet pad they sweep it into a uncovered floor outlet and let leave it. We had dust flying everywhere. I did no say anything but now I am very unhappy with them. This is LAZYINESS on their part. A TOTAL LACK OF RESPECT for the homeowners property. They start installing the hardwood floor. My choice was to install a row of 5 inch width hardwood and then a row of 3.5 inch hardwood and then alternating the width every other row. This hardwood would be butting up against a tile floor in kitchen/dining area. To transition from the great room hardwood to the dining tile Chip the owner of Big Dog Floors said they would use a T-molding. After they had installed about 8 or so of hardwood that butted up against the tile I took the T-molding and laid it down to see how the transition would look. Guess what? It was not looking good because the tile floor was a one half inch higher than the hardwood. When I question Donnie the installer he said I would need to go to Menards at get a different kind of transition strip. “I would have to go to Menards”. DID I HIRE ME TO DO THIS WORK? I DON’T THINK SO. Now I have a tripping hazard. This is the end of day one. The next day at 7:30 A.M. I call Chip and tell him I am going work and there would be no one coming to my house to do a install. Chip says “Why?” I explain all this stuff that I am not happy with after just one day. A dusty mess, too lazy to move furniture, laying board on the floor and kicking it into place with his foot and not tapping it into place with a proper tool, Uneven transition from hardwood to tile. Chip says “I will talk to Donnie”. As it turn out Chip says this same thing every time I have a complaint/concern. I read the web site of Somerset Hardwood Floors and it says the installer should lay out no more than 10 percent or 100 square feet of the floor before installation and let the homeowner decided on the color. If the homeowner is not satisfied then do not proceed with the install. Big Dog’s installers did not do that … they just started installing. NOW WHAT RECOURSE DO I HAVE? I decided to stop in the store of Big Dog Floors and talk to the owner Chip myself. As soon as I walk in I could feel the COLD SHOULDER presence. I sit down with Chip and discuss every item on my list that I am UNHAPPY with. 1. Installers WOULD ONLY work out of one open box at a time. They REFUSED to lay the floor down and look at it before they started nailing it. 2. Installers turn out to be ALL SUB CNTRACTORS EXCEPT FOR ONE. Chip has lied to us saying he does not use sub contractors. 3. I am required to go out and find new transition moldings for hardwood to tile. 4. Big Dog’s analysis of the job MISSED THE PART to where we really needed a sub floor put down to raise the height of the great room floor to match the tile floor. 5. Hardwood boards NOT MATCHED CORRECTLY BY THE INSTALLER to blend together. 6. Hardwood manufacture allows the customer to reject the floor if color or grain is not acceptable. TOO LATE FOR THIS BECAUSE THEY INSTALLED IT WITHOUT ASKING ME. THEY DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CLAUSE ON THE MANUFACTURES WEB SITE. 7. INSTALLER DONNIE COOPER TAKES PICTURES OF THE FLOOR WITHOUT ASKING FOR MY PERMISSION. 8. Remember Chip said at the very beginning of this that they would do a great job for me. 9. When I met with Chip I mentioned one of the installers by name to him … Mike … the owner of Big Dog Floors Chip said “I never even heard of a installer named Mike”. This guy DOES NOT even know all the installers that do work on his behalf. 10. The installers would not do any extra work on the side for extra money like install new base board moldings, quarter round, door casings, etc. The owner of Big Dog Floors said they would do that work but the installers tell me they will not do the work. So now I am in a contract where the owner of Big Dog Floors Chip HAS OVER SOLD HIS BUSINESS CAPABILITIES and they have my $5000.00 and I am in a contractual mess. Chip tells me that he will talk to Donnie (His one and only employee … he does use sub contractors … he lied to us). I decide that we will have a sub floor installed to raise the height of the great room floor to be the same height of the dining area tile floor. The price Chip quotes me is very high but I eventually agree. I also decided that since we are going to be putting in a sub floor that we will switch to all five inch width hardwood boards also. Two weeks pass without hearing anything from Big Dog Floors or Chip. Chip finally calls on Saturday and says that Donnie is ready to start installing again on Monday. He has giving NO TIME to arrange the time off with my employer. I tell him NO … they WILL NOT be able to start the install until I arrange the time off. I tell Chip that Tuesday will be day they start the install. Chip agrees. He has no choice! The next Tuesday Donnie Cooper and James come to our house to starting removing two hundred square feet of hardwood previously put down so they can install a sub floor. I ask this if Chip told them that we would be installing sub floor. Donnie says “NO, YOU HAVE CHANGED YOUR MIND SO MANY TIMES THAT YOU WOULD TELL US WHEN WE GO HERE”. I take that comment as talking back and being disrespectful. Immediately Donnie has an attitude. I went on to talk to Donnie about when they install the floor this time they would need to open multiple boxes while installing this time and work out of multiple boxes. Donnie says “If want that you are going to have to pay me more money. That takes time and I am not doing it!” FIRST OF ALL LET”S GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT. I HIRED BIG DOG FLOORS WITH A CONTRACT WITH THE OWNER AND NOT THE INSTALLER. THE OWNER SAID HE WOULD TALK TO DONNIE ABOUT THIS. Donnie had NO justification making that statement. REMEMBER I AM THE CUSTOMER AND IT IS ME WHO IS GOING TO PAY THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE.

Response from Big Dog Flooring
Unfortunately their are some jobs where the customer wants to totally micromanage, constantly change, and make it impossible to accomplish what we were initially sent to do. These were our issues we had with [member name removed] while we were trying to get his flooring installed. 1. He changed his mind on his hardwood color three times during installation not being happy with the color. On our invoice it states that there is a restock fee for returning special orders depending on the mill. With wood it is usually 25 to 30%, we did not charge [member name removed] for the first two hardwoods sent back, we ate those expenses. 2. He had to go thru every wood plank in the driveway as the installers were cutting and putting down the hardwood, pulling out what planks he didn't want down or having them tear out ones that they had already put down because he did not like the color variations. 3. We have in our schedule book where the installers went over to his home five different times to try to install and when they would get there they would be told they would have to come back another time because he has to leave. This severely messed-up our schedule with our other customers. The communication for installing with [member name removed] was terrible on his end with us. 4, Upon his third hardwood being installed we laid 200 sq.ft. and pulled it out upon his request. After matters with us, the installers no longer being able to work with him, and turning a five day job into a five week job of nothing getting accomplished, we decided to end the contract work with [member name removed]. After pulling the 200 sq.ft. of the third hardwood that [member name removed] did not like, we told him we could no longer work with him on his job. We charged him for the restock fee on the 200 sq.ft. of hardwood, since we ate the other two hardwood restocks, and did not charge him for any labor. We felt that this was more that fair on our part. The new floors look great, overall. Could have done a better job of covering top nails. They are noticeable. Installers should have used putty rather than just a marker. Installation took 4 days longer than estimated. Initially brought wrong transition wood. Brought out only one sample of another on last day of work when several samples were requested a week before. Biggest problem was due to the weather sawing was done in one room of house but no vacuum system or containment was used. Saw dust ended up throughout the house and heating system. This cost us 4 days of extra clean-up, including duct cleaning. When we called to make final payment, and afterwards , there was no one at Big Dog who asked if we were satisfied.

At the customers request, they asked for marker to used instead of puddy on the nails. They did ask the installers to use one of the rooms in the house do to the weather. Unfortunately, clean-up will be more when this is done, no matter how much installers try to keep things contained. When the (member name removed) called to make final payment, they were asked if everything was o.k. with there job, nothing was implied. Big Dog Flooring

They did great. I really liked just about everything. Now, they're not done yet. They still have ceramic floor to put down in my kitchen area and then the two bathrooms. But the laminated flooring, the gentleman that did that did a great job. He was real professional. He'd come in on Tuesday and tore up the old carpeting and then he was done by Saturday and it's a good sized area that he did. He has some more work to do and it will cost me a total of $9,300.00. I am happy with that price.

There was a communication problem and we ended up having the new vinyl laid over the old, which my husband originally did not really want. We told sales people at the store, and when one of them came to the house to measure, that we wanted the old flooring taken up. When the installers arrived, they were not prepared to do that, allthough the amount to tear up was included in our price quote. After talking on the phone with the store while the installers were here, we agreed to have the vinyl laid over the old because our original vinyl was in decent shape and was not coming up or unglued anywhere, but there was obviously a communication problem. I believe $65 was taken off the original estimate because they were not tearing up - I felt a little more could have been taken off the bill, since tearing up is pretty labor-intensive, but we will not hesitate to, at a minimum, get a quote from Big Dog for any future work. They laid carpeting throughout our home a few years ago and we are satisfied.

What an incredible makeover. This is the first time that I have used Angie's List and I sure am glad that I did so. I had received a quote from Empire, and their salesman seemed a little high presure, and so that made me a bit suspicious. I went onto Angie's List and did a rather easy search for flooring installers, and Big Dog was at the top of the list, both from a cost and quality of instalation perspective. So I thought I would give it a try. We had about 1200 sqare feet of wood laminate to be installed, and they said it would take three to four days. They worked till very late the 3rd day to get it done, and we were able to move all the furniture back in from the garage the following day. It was so nasty under that ancient carpet. Now I know the place is truly clear of allergines, and my Son and daughter-in-law will not have as much trouble with allergies. Now my wife wants me to do our living room at our house. I know I will be going back to Big Dog to get it done. Thanks for an outstanding job!!

We had recently bought a home that needed new floors and carpets. We decided to go with Chip / Big dog because of the materials they had in stock. They had a good variety of colors for the flooring. And a wide range of carpet as well. There is a wide selection of special order but we had so much flooring we needed to lower the overall pricing. We have a 2400sq ft house that was re-floored / carpeted in under 4 days (3days for laminate floorning and 1 day for carpet) They did a great job. Fast and very professional crew that they had out for both the carpets and floorning. Also worked well with our painters as well.

James & Donnie took out the old carpet. They took out all the refuse which is huge relief. I have had other contractors that couldn't ( or wouldn't) perform this service. The commode was re-installed after flooring was replaced. Carpet was put on a stairway and bedroom. This was a new experience for me & Big Dog Flooring made it as painless as possible. Bernie (the "Big Dog" at the showroom) is really nice dog.
Description of Work: Carpet removal & hardwood/carpet installation. Had to remove commode & re-install due to wax seal leak. Clean-up after job was excellent. Guys had to move furniture & put it back. Prompt, punctual, & professional. James & Donnie did a great job! The folks in the store were very helpful & answered numerous quuestions patiently.

Everything about my experience was wonderful. We had been looking at carpet at Lowes, Hiome Depot, etc. I was beyond frustrated with the lack of customer service at those places. The minute we walked in to Big Dog we were given wonderful customer service. Susan was awesome. I was pregnant and in a rush to get the order placed. Big Dog worked with us on pricing and got things going very quickly. I was home during the carpet installation and the guys who came to my house to install the carpet were so nice. I was especially impressed with how nice they were to each other. They really did work together as a team. Best experience ever!!

We want to support our local Southside businesses, so we tried Big Dog. I had never purchased new carpet before, so $3248 seemed like a good price for Shaw carpeting installed with padding on an 1800 sq foot home. The carpet was advertised with padding for $1.99 yard. A guy came to measure the carpeting and said they'd call us with the pricing the next day. A day or so later and no one had called, so my husband went to their showroom to get the quote. The day after, we happened to be by Home Depot and found the EXACT same carpeting and padding of the same thickness for $1.12 per yard. We had them come out and measure and their quote including installation, padding, etc. was $2058 - almost $1200 CHEAPER than Big Dog. Sorry, but when it's that big of a price difference, we have to watch the pocketbook. Not very impressed with their customer service. We were disappointed that they never even called us to see if we wanted to go forward with the purchase.
Description of Work: Received quote for carpet for 1800 sq foot house. Quote included carpet, padding and installation. Did not purchase carpet from them because they were very overpriced.

Response from Big Dog Flooring
I hope this couple continues to shop local first! I also would have gone with the carpet at Home Depot, but they were not comparing "apples to apples". Home Depot's carpets are all private labeled and not available at our store. We try very hard as an independent flooring dealer to give the best pricing available to our customers, word of mouth on our pricing and services is what keeps bringing us new clients. Unfortunately, the big box stores can mislead alot of consumers into a pricing frinzy on what they are actually getting for their money. Thank you, Kristin Collins owner/ Big Dog Flooring

They worked with me to help me find the material that would look good with my cabinets and colors. They installed the floor and arrived on time. When I found a small raised place in the floor, they immediately worked with me to resolve the issue. I would recommend them as they work with the customer in a friendly, professional manner from sale to installation and warranty. Once the floor is installed, they continue to follow up if there are any issues. They willingly worked on a Saturday to resolve a minor issue.
Description of Work: Installed vinyl plank flooring in kitchen, dining, laundry, hall and bathroom.

We needed carpet replaced on a 2 story house. 3 rooms on the first floor and 3 rooms on the second floor. I called Big Dog they came out the next day to look at it. I had a estimate the day following that. It was a great price for what needed to be done so I called them back to do the job. They showed up on time and even early. They were very professional and did a great job. I would absolutely use them again and recommend them to anyone else needing carpet work done.
Description of Work: Big Dog Flooring replaced 3 rooms of carpet on the first floor and 2 rooms of carpet on the second floor. They also added carpet to a third room on the second floor.
