TJ's Chimney Sweep

Chimney Sweep, Chimney Repair, Fireplaces,

About us

T.J.’s Chimney Sweep was established in 1979 by Tim J. My goal was to provide a second income for my family, but I also wanted to get away from working in a factory. This was right at the time when the old oil embargo was well under way and the resurgence of wood stoves was taking place. I started working weekends sweeping chimneys. Back in those days all I had to learn from was a kit with a powerful soot sweeper, brushes and a study manual to help me along the way. I soon got laid off from the factory, so chimney sweeping, here I come! Trying to get my name out there was difficult because I had no experience in advertising or running a business. However, I got in with a stove dealer in New Palestine, and by 1984 I had my first employee. I soon found out that a lot of chimneys were in need of repair and most brick layers did not want to bother with a small repair job. So in 1986, I went to an Indian Reservation in South Dakota to learn the basics of chimney repairs. In the meantime, I also discovered that there was an organization of chimney sweeps called the National Chimney Sweep Guild that I joined. After taking a chimney sweep test, I also became certified. By 1990 I now had a full time employee and also helped found the Indiana Chimney Sweep Guild where I made some good friends and fellow sweeps who followed a good code of ethics. In 2004, I started selling wood stoves and inserts as well as gas inserts. We used to have a showroom at my property, along with my office, which was available to view by appointment only. In October of 2011 we moved our office and showroom to a bigger location at 866 South State St, Greenfield, Indiana. Here is it 2015, and I have my son, who is a journeyman brick layer and co-owner, along with 3 full-time technicians, and last but not least, Janell and Susie, who run the office and hearth shop. We just remodeled our showroom and expanded our warehouse. I never thought I would make it this far, but together, we make an awesome team and it will only get better from here! Stop in and check us out!!

The service was great. They are very professional and the job was well done. They used to clean the fireplace for years and we were very happy with that.
Description of Work: They resurfaced our fireplace. They took the old stone out and put the new in. They converted the wood burning stove to a gas insert. They most recently came back to touch up the work.

We had a chimney fire and we found TJ's Chimney Service's website from searching online. We requested a quote using their website, and we received a phone call back the same day. They promptly scheduled a visit to our house to inspect the damage and quote the appropriate repairs. I was very impressed with the professional and friendly service we received during all of our dealings. All my questions were thoroughly answered. TJ's Chimney Service did a fantastic job installing our new chimney and helping to deal with the insurance company,. They got the repairs done in a single, WINTER day and our woodstove has performed superbly. I would heartily recommend TJ's Chimney Service to anyone needing work done.
Description of Work: House fire repair. Removed old cement block chimney and fire pipes. Installed new chimney system from stove to roof top. Patched bricks on fireplace platform. Completed in one day.

It went great. Cody was on time, very courteous, and efficient. He made a special effort to put down drop cloths and clean up after. He clearly explained everything that needed to be done.
Description of Work: I just moved into my new (old) home in November. The home inspection indicated a lot of build-up in the chimney, and suggested I get it professionally swept before attempting to use it. I called TJ's to come out and inspect and sweep the chimney.

The job was well done, inspection showed no problems though it badly needed a cleaning. The cleaning took less than an hour, all from inside the home..no mess.
Description of Work: I had used TJ's in the past to do a reline and retuck of my chimney in another home so this company was the first and only I contacted. Since I had just purchased the home I thought an inspection was warranted before using the fireplace.

We just moved into a house that has a wood-burning fireplace and two gas-log fireplaces. We wanted all of them inspected and cleaned, and we needed a crash-course on gas-log fireplace use and safety. When the technician (Gabe) arrived ON TIME, we explained what we wanted and showed him the first of the gas fireplaces. After instructing us on its use, he pointed out that there was no shut-off valve near the fireplace and took the time to track it down for us (it was outside the house). He then said the flue was already pretty clean so there was really no need to clean it. Then we took him to the second gas-log fireplace, which is in the master bedroom. He saw that it was a ventless model and discussed the safety issues of having a ventless gas fireplace in a bedroom. Since we already weren't excited about having a fireplace in the bedroom, we decided that we would either remove it or replace it with a vented model in the next few years. I was impressed that he didn't start giving us a sales pitch for a new fireplace. Then we went to the wood fireplace. Upon inspection, he found that there was not a shut-off valve at the fireplace and that there was a gas log lighter buried under all the ash. Again, he tracked down the shut-off for us (it was in the garage), and suggested that we replace the incorrectly-sized grate that was in there and remove the gas log lighter as neither was designed for use in our pre-fab fireplace, especially without a shut-off valve nearby. He performed the cleaning without leaving any mess. When he presented the bill to us, he could have justified charging an inspection fee on the gas-log fireplaces, but he only charged for the inspection/cleaning of the wood-burning one, saying that he really didn't do enough to charge anything on the gas fireplaces. When I asked if we needed to have this service done annually, he said that if we were really only going to use it five or six times a year like we said then we could get have it cleaned every other year. It's rare to find a company that doesn't try to up-sell you at every turn. We were very impressed with this technician--and, by extension, this company--and will definitely call again next time.

T J's Chimney Sweep did okay with the chimney part but with the roof part they didn't really know what they were doing and the roof was still leaking. We talked to the owner and he said that's how they learn from their mistakes so he refunded us the cost of hiring another company to rebuild the roof portion. As far as the chimney work they did fine and when they installed the fireplace doors they did great. They had a good idea of using a stainless steel chimney. They just didn't do the finishing of the roof part right but the owner helped us resolve it easily and friendly.

They were on time, personable, professional, knowledgeable and were able to explain and show me what was wrong with the chimney so I could understand it. They were able to give me the estimate right away! The estimate was very detailed and reasonably priced. I know now why there are so booked up, they do an excellent job and I will be scheduling my cleaning/repair the end of this month. I recommend them highly.

It was a horrible experience. When I told him that I was going to report this job on Angies List, he shrugged his shoulder and acted like he didn't care.
Description of Work: Hired company to conduct chimney repair. They used the wrong color brick. The helper took his wheelbarrow of mortar and dumped it in my flower beds. My perennials were concreted to the ground. The helper also dumped more trash and mortar behind a shrub on my back property line. It was aheared to my mulch. They had to dig it up along with my mulch. The main guy running the job had nothing to say for his helpers performance. I used them for years till now. I will no longer use this company. I didn't even get a formal apology for the poor job performance.

Everything went very, very well. Glad I called months in advance of the heating season, though. It took a while for the work to be completed, partly because TJ's had to do a revised estimate once they got inside the job and realized it was bigger than they could detect during the initial estimate. The insurance company responded promptly, however. And, it's a good thing we had a mild fall, as our entire heating system was down while the chimney was under repair.
Description of Work: TJ's Chimney Service was recommended by another provider, ServPro of Richmond after they completed a massive smoke damage clean-up following our home fire in May 2011. Our fireplace and furnace chimney and liner had to be rebuilt and replaced. This including the removal of exterior limestone masonry ... and the rebuilding of the interior and exterior chimney. The extremely hot fire nearly destroyed our chimney, but TJ's Chimney Service made it better than new! Fortunately, payment for all of TJ's work was entirely covered by our excellent insurance company, Farmer's Mutual. The company is about 1 hour's drive from our home, but that didn't stop Mr. Robinson, an owner, from coming out for a free estimate and returning four times to complete the work. Mr. Robinson and all of his employees were very professional in all regards. If you contact TJ's, DO allow time for them to schedule their service. They are very busy. Don't bother to explain in great detail what work you have done prior to their examination of your chimney. They can tell what's going on. I had a prior contractor come out to explain what he had done in the past on our very old chimney, but they didn't need his help. I'm sorry I put both contractors through that experience.

The crew came out and my wife was told they had completed the job. It only took them 5 minutes. They never even went up on the roof to check the chimney crown or inspect the flu pipe. They also said that the gasket didn't need replaced, but I had specifically asked to have it replaced. I called him back and he stated his crew was supposed to have gone on the roof to inspect it. He said his crew would call me back the next day, but never did. After a week went by I finally called him back and he said he would come out and check. It took him 2 more weeks to come out. Finally, he came out, he said the crown was cracked and the flashing needed replaced. This would cost almost $1000 to fix. I've gotten estimates from others that were much less expensive.

WE INSTALLED A NEW WOOD INSERT WITH THE PROPER POSITIVE CONNECT STAINLESS STEEL LINER TO CODE FOR THIS CUSTOMER IN 2007. WE INSTALLED IT IN SUCH A MANNER THAT IT WOULD BE EASY EACH YEAR FOR A CLEANING. FIVE MINUTES IS A BIT OF OF A STRETCH AS IT TAKES THAT LONG TO TAKE IN THE EQUIPMENT TO SET UP, THEN YES IT ONLY TAKES 5 MINUTES TO CLEAN, BUT THAT IS FOR FIRE SAFETY AND PEACE OF MIND! WHY REPLACE THE DOOR GASKET IF IT DOES NOT NEED IT? I TRIED TO COME OUT TWICE IN THOSE TWO WEEKS BUT HAD WEATHER DELAYS, ROOF WAS VERY STEEP! IF OTHER ESTIMATES WERE A LOT CHEAPER THAN MY OPINION IS THAT IT WAS NOT FOR THE EXACT SAME WORK. IT REALLY BOTHERS ME WHEN I GET REPORTS LIKE THIS, AND I'M SORRY. BUT I SERVICE OVER 300 CHIMNEYS A YEAR AND IF THIS WAS THE ONLY BAD REPORT THAN TO ME THAT IS STILL AN A.

The company used the wrong color of brick on my chimney. I have been waiting since June 2006 to have the job corrected. As of today, the job still isn't done. I am very disappointed with the company. My family and I have used this company for over 20 years for chimney cleaning services and the chimney repair service provided by the company for this job has shocked me by how unprofessional the contractor has been. I wonder how a contractor can place an invoice on my door expecting a payment in full when the job isn't completed to the customers liking.
