One of the best companies I have ever worked with. Extremely professional, punctual and very conscience of trying to do the best job possible. They seem to have a very busy schedule so they met me on a Sunday to give me an estimate and delivered the materials to the house on a Sunday a couple of weeks before the install date so that the new wood could acclimate to the environment. This project was at a cabin in Brown County with exposed beam and timber ceilings below the floor they were installing. I received a call from Mark telling me that the nails from the new installed hardwood floor were coming through the ceiling about an 1/8 on an inch (barely visible). Mark ran into town and picked up a different nail so that it would not be visible in the ceiling at all. That just showed me that he will treat your house as he would his own and that is rare to find today. Thanks for everything Mark, Teresa and crew.

We appreciate the professionalism and care that Cox provided for us and would use them again.
Description of Work: While having done several new builds and remodels, this was our first time refinishing existing wood floors. Cox was very responsive from our initial contact and request for quotation. They came out and inspected our project, set good expectations on the process and answered all of our questions. When it came to the work being performed, they were very conscientious and did everything they could to control the dust generated from sanding. Cox created a sample of what the color and finish would look like for our approval. The end result is a beautifully refinished floor that we absolutely love at what we felt was a very fair and reasonable price for the quality of work.

Cox Hardwoods had to come in and correct another contractor's work on a home we were renovating following the death of my wife's mother. Due to some discoloration on the first floor discovered under carpeting (which had not been removed in years), the first contractor had applied a dark stain throughout the house. Since this was part of a full renovation the house was empty and Cox informed us they could begin work on the top floor soon should something change in their schedule. Fortunately, someone did reschedule and they were able to come a week later. Also fortunately, the first contractor had done such a poor job that the stain did not go far into the wood and after they sanded the upstairs Mark Eads called me to come see the floors as they would appear naturally, without stain. I agreed to leave them natural and the floors turned out beautifully. They made sure to tape off the upstairs and kept the dust to an absolute minimum. They scheduled the downstairs for later the next month but were able to return in about three weeks, again due to another customer's change. After sanding the downstairs Mark Eads again called me to come see the floors, this time to show the discoloration that did not sand out. He was very upfront about what they could and could not do and in the end we chose to go natural to match the upstairs, with some discoloration as is to be expected given the age of the house. By splitting the work into two phases they were able to complete the whole job sooner , allowing us to repaint in the interim, and they did absolutely no harm to the painted services. Throughout the job they were professional, helpful, clean, and respectful of our property and our concerns. The floors turned out beautifully both upstairs and down. I would recommend their services without hesitation to anyone.
Description of Work: Cox Hardwood Flooring LLC had to follow the work of a fired contractor who did not adequately strip, sand, and stain original hardwood floors throughout an older four-bedroom home.

Once again Mark and his crew came through for me! When I moved to Woodruff Place in 1988 I used Arvel Cox to refinish my floors. So did many of my neighbors. I moved away and when I came back to Indianapolis and bought an old house in Woodruff Place, I started trying to find Arvel Cox. I soon learned he had died but the business continued by one of his workers, Mark. Mark came to give an opinion of what needed to be done and an estimate. There was much repair work that needed to be done on the floors after I finished the tearing out of walls. And the great room had to be done in two stages since I had things stored there that were too large to move down the hallway. In spite of those obstacles, Mark and crew came through. Repairs and floors were nicely done. And the best part, there was no sawdust left, even on the window sills. The crew cleaned up after themselves, used plastic to cover areas not being worked on and were very polite and respectful of my property. I couldn't ask for a better experience with workers. Two other times I had them come and refinish other rooms and hallway. Same delightful experience. Cleaned up after themselves, very little mess left and very little sawdust. They explained what they were doing, how long it would take and what I could expect. Very nice company to work with. Two weeks ago I had more floors that needed to be redone. I didn't even consider contacting anyone else for an estimate. I called and said, please schedule the work. And once again, they did not disappoint. The quality of the work is wonderful. They are a delight to have in my home--they even tolerated my two German Shorthair Pointers! Cost was very reasonable to refinish my upstairs apartment floors and my downstairs bedroom. There was very little clean up that needed to be done. I was in the house while they did the sanding and there was no irritant to my lungs at all. I have recommended them to many of my friends and neighbors and they have been pleased also. I only have one more apartment to be done and one more room in my house and I will look forward to using the crew from Cox again. As you can see, they get high marks from me!

THE PRE-CHRISTMAS RUSH JOB- DETAIL -Rush job finished in three days instead of five and one half days. I was not there to oversee work and cleanliness. Without any input from me he was able to jump on to other pre?Christmas jobs while rushing our job. -Chips and groves out of rounded step edges. -Newly painted white risers with multiple chips and stain spills. -Not covering or protecting rooms and valuables from sawdust drift. -Not protecting cold air returns and furnace. -Not emptying or using vacuum system to protect home. -Not counter sinking holes and filling with putty. -Test area done in walnut stain instead of maple, finish did not match previously finished downstairs floors even after mistake was pointed out. -My daughter reported daily that air in home was not breathable. -Photo documentation of difference of upstairs and downstairs stain colors. -Heavy sawdust covering all boxes stored in living room to be moved back upstairs. Heavy sawdust on LG television DVD, CD?S, Stereo, turntable and a Bose wave radio and even a pair of shoes two rooms away from sanding were loaded with sawdust. -Of the 51 windows in our home 49 were saturated with sawdust -Doorbell (close to sanding job) now malfunctions needed to buy new one. -14 newly installed windows in art studio were saturated with heavy sawdust in every groove, lock, upper ledge in between the ridge openings and of course the glass itself. The new caulk around the windows has sawdust imbedded in it. Every window in our home had to be fine detailed by my husband and I to be able to breath( I have asthma) the dust is returning to previously cleaned areas. -All freshly painted rooms upstairs and downstairs including foyer, hall and ceilings were covered with heavy sawdust. -Brand new $2,100.00 LG stackable W/D set was delivered to an upstairs bathroom with tile floor. They were not covered or protected by Cox flooring as promised The new High-Tec machines with multiple external sensors were saturated with sawdust. -Found cold air return filter from upstairs heavily laden with dust tossed in front of a china cabinet downstairs in our dining room leaving a sawdust impression of the filter with sawdust saturated throughout the filter this was supposed to be taped on metal return with blue painters tape. -Downstairs cold air return was heavily laden with sawdust and the filter we provided was moved away. -New 3M 4? filter from our furnace was heavily saturated with sawdust. -Both fans and light in bathrooms were covered with sawdust-one was newly installed by electrician. -Three areas touched by careless workers with walnut stain applicators-one on downstairs maple stained hardwoods and the others were seen on freshly painted upstairs bedroom walls. -Report from painting company that crews who worked in the back art studio the first day that Cox flooring was sanding in opposite area of home that they had never in their life seen as much sawdust everywhere-they reported having trouble breathing. -The owner of the painting company came to collect his check and could not believe what he saw. He stated he had never seen such damage from sawdust in all of the decades he has worked in this business and he would do his best to have his crews wash down all the walls ceilings and trim. The sawdust still remains on many of the areas they washed even after the hours of long hard work for this crew. He recommended hiring a cleaning company to do a through whole house cleaning including furnace and duct cleaning. He stated the damage done was like soot from a house fire and a crew needed special soot sponges to clean off this residue. He said until that was done the dust will just continue to form everywhere in the home. He stated that he has completed job after job behind other hardwood flooring contractor and has NEVER seen anything like it. He could not believe the amount of destruction from the dust. Before he left the owner of paint company ran his hand over nails holes and shook his head. He commented he (Mark Eads) didn?t even fill the holes. -Walls, molding and door trim were nicked in multiple areas upstairs and downstairs paint removed from careless taping on freshly painted walls (7 rooms, foyer and downstairs hall, upstairs landing and large hall). -Threshold in upstairs bathroom was left unattached and not nailed down causing a tripping hazard. -Blue painters tape was used to attach phone and cable cords to newly painted walls upstairs and downstairs even after he told me to instruct the painters to use yellow frog tape as not to damage floors-paint was removed in several areas (painting repairs not done yet). -Another company returned our restored dining room table and chairs and antique side board and couldn?t believe it. He stated they do about 10 floors a year and always leave homes sawdust free. If even a very small bit of sawdust remains, they take the time to clean it. -Items inside bathroom medicine cabinet were covered with sawdust. -Boxes have still not been returned to upstairs as they are saw dust covered and being stored in cold garage-untold number of supplies and personal items are damaged or ruined such as expensive acrylic and oil paints, dyes, inks, makeup, perfumes, cleaners, photo chemicals etc. -Movers were contracted to move boxes back upstairs but could not do so due to the dust. Family members had to assist in this arduous task to move boxes into garage. -Sawdust is highly acidic and corrosive and continues to appear throughout home a newly purchases computer armoire that was stored in garage prior to sanding is now covered with sawdust fallout. THE FOLLOWING ARE EXPENSES I HAVE INCURRED OR WILL BE INCURRING DUE TO THE FLAGRANT DAMAGE CAUSED BY COX FLOORING -Deep clean two bathrooms. -All walls, ceilings and moldings washed (one time not successful due to continued residue). -Furnace cleaning and check up. -Complete Duct Cleaning entire House. -Deep Cleaning of entire house. -Professional organizer to help sort and clean boxes of goods yet unpacked to be returned to upstairs. -Professional window Cleaning all windows. -Repair and repaint damaged moldings, door frames, caulking, kick plates and walls. -Replace if needed new LG W/D including cost of five year extended warranty, electrician and plumber costs ( page 21 of the LG DRYER manual states Moisture Sensor: This sensor is used by the control to sense the moisture remaining in clothes. If the sensor becomes dirty or coated the control will not be able to sense the moisture and the dryer will shut off before the clothes are dry.) I have already encountered problems with this. -Repay us for the loss of our home, the loss of Christmas with our family , no Christmas tree, no lights not even an ornament and the loss of personal hours between 12-16 daily since this damage. The cost per hour (professional rates) for our personal expenditure of time spent on this never ending task. We and other family member have spent untold hours on damage abatement including the hours we are still spending and extreme pain and suffering. -Any and all legal fees -The additional moving fees we incurred ($800.00 up/$800.00 down plus $150 ) Boxes were not moved back up due to heavy dust but we were still charged the same fee. -The cost of new moving fees. -The cost of refinishing the floors to match the downstairs. -The cost of relocating our family until work can be completed. -The cost of packing and storing items from home. -Punitive damages due to a permanent change in color, quality and finish from upstairs to downstairs and for life changing damage caused by the trauma from this event. -Any unforeseen damage that has yet to be discovered.
Description of Work: I called Cox Hardwood flooring the week of September 16th 2013 to set up an appointment for an estimate to refinish the floors of my entire upstairs and 14 steps. He arrived mid-afternoon on September 26th 2013. I told him that he and the late Mr. Arvel Cox had refinished my entire downstairs floors 26 years ago and I wanted him to do the exact same job, color and finish for our upstairs ( there was very little dust remaining after he and the late Mr. Cox completed the first job). We discussed the stain and I told him that I wanted the same warm maple stain with a semi-gloss finish. He agreed and said he wanted to return before the project to do a test stain on our downstairs to make sure it matched. We discussed at this time the proper care of our property during the restoration. He told me very little sawdust would remain after they were finished. He assured me that downstairs adjoining rooms would be covered with plastic to abate the dust from spreading. I told him that my husband and I planned to cover the two cold air returns with an additional filter on top ( we taped it over the returns and we would place a brand new 3M four inch filter in our high efficiency furnace before he began the job. I asked him if they would counter sink and putty the nails they same beautiful way it was done before. He told me he always adheres to the same professional standards that was taught to him by the former Arvel Cox. I asked him specifically to cover our main bathroom with plastic and seal it as we were going to have brand new stackable LG washer and dryer set delivered upstairs into the bathroom to store it there before the job began as not to possibly scratch the newly refinished floors during the move back upstairs(the W/D was to be moved into an upstairs art studio ). He absolutely assured me that he would take due care to do so. I told him he and his crew were welcome to use the other upstairs bathroom or our downstairs bathroom but asked that they please keep the doors closed as I had a brand new exhaust fan and ceiling light installed in the second upstairs bath before the job began. I asked him if I should remove the brackets and shelves from our five upstairs closet systems and if I could keep some sealed plastic storage bins on the upper shelves and he replied that it was unnecessary to remove the closet system as the dust would not reach up that far. I said we would be happy to move it for him he again said there was no need. I asked about possible damage to the newly painted walls and trim upstairs and downstairs. He said there would very little if any as they were very careful not to damage property. He instructed me that I needed to advise the painters coming in for minor touch ups after he finished the floors to use yellow frog tape not green or blue tape as the tape could pull up the finish off of the floor before it had cured. I received the estimate via e-mail on Tuesday September 26th 2013. I called a Mrs. Eads and told her I accepted the bid for the work and wanted to schedule it for Tuesday December 10th as we would be out of town attending our nieces wedding. I asked her if she would like me to sign this bid and return it .She said this was not needed as she put me on the work schedule. I signed and dated the bid for my own records. I called Cox flooring the last week in November to have Mr. Eads do a stain test on our downstairs floors. He did the test late morning December 4th. I gave him the key to our home asking him to drop it in the mail slot when he was finished. He told me the work would begin late morning Tuesday December 10th 2013 and he estimated it would take five days to complete the job maybe five and a half and if he had to he would work on Sunday. I called Cox’s office after the stain test and told them it was darker than before and not glossy at all and it does not match the beauty of the downstairs he said he would fix it when he came to do the upstairs floors.( It still looks bad )Instead of five and one half days to complete the job he finished it in three days. This rushed pre-Christmas three day job left us with a nightmare. The job was completed on Friday December 13th not Sunday the 15th 2013. My daughter texted me during this job with the following comment “ To me they just look cheap and not elegant. Hopefully they’ll make it right for you if they still look bad . I’ll see you later tonight.” When Mr. Eads called me in San Diego via cell phone to report that the job was done He told me he used a walnut stain on the upstairs floors. I asked him to match the warmth of the downstairs floors with maple stain. HE simply forgot the color I wanted. I read him my daughters text and he said something about that was just the cut on the wood. My daughter then texted me “ So did they say they changed the steps at all? Because those steps did not look good. I just hope the rest of the floors don’t look like it.” The next day She texted me a split screen photo of the upstairs floors and the downstairs floors. It is clearly evident the two are completely different. Downstairs is warm and elegant upstairs is cool and dark and not as glossy as downstairs.

Response from Cox Hardwood Flooring LLC
Arvel Cox was hired by the home owners to sand & refinish their hardwood floors downstairs 26 years ago, and then recently, Cox Hardwood Flooring was hired in December of 2014 to do their upstairs. We believe our positive reputation is reflected by our Angie’s List member’s reviews. It is unfortunate that the home owners are disappointed by the services that they requested, including the personal specifications of stain color. However, we do inform customers that sanding hardwood floors will create dust. We did seal off rooms to help protect the dust from infiltrating into other areas of the home, but the fact is you will still have some remaining dust. This is a procedure/ protocol that is executed in our customer’s homes and by reading past and or present reviews, you will see evidence to those facts. We are happy to discuss this situation with any of our future customers as we know we provide the highest quality service.

It went extremely well. The crew was polite and professional and on time each day. The floors look better than they ever have. My only disappointment was that the company does not take credit cards so I missed out on earning 1400 miles on American Airlines. But the job was perfect and I am completely satisfied.

We made an appointment to get an estimate and he was very prompt and made measurements, etc. Then gave us the info needed to make the hardwood purchase. We had some followup questions after the estimate. They answered very promptly by email and phone. They came out on the day we selected and took up and disposed of the old carpeting and installed the new flooring in about 2 hours and also installed quarter round on the edges. In the same visit they sanded the old entryway teakwood and then put the first urethane coat on it. They included a coat on the quarter round in the entryway. The next morning they came back and put on the second entryway coat. They were very professional. They sealed the doorways well to avoid scattering dust all through the house.
Description of Work: Cox gave an estimate, then at a later date came out and installed new hardwood flooring (223 sq ft.) in our family room using wood we purchased, and also refinished a 92 sq ft. teakwood entryway.
Extremely well - call ahead to say exact arrival time on day promised. Best price of 3 estimates and extremely good work. Attention to every detail.

An excellent job! From my first contact with Teresa in the office to set up the work to the final result the professionalism with which the business was handled was evident. The carpet on the floors were at least 22 years old and there were problem spots caused by naughty cats. They were able to sand down the problem spots and remove the odor. The had to reinforce a rather large spot caused by old termite damage and put in a section of new flooring. They also put in a section of new flooring in a rather troublesome cat damage area. I decided not to stain and go natural. It was a good decision, The finished product is beautiful. I highly recommend Cox Hardwood Flooring.

WE have historical floors in an old loft that had been neglected. They were filthy. Cox flooring came in and cleaned and put down a beautiful new satin poly finish. Everyone that comes in remarks on how pretty they are. They did this for us before we moved in and place was empty so worked out well for us. I think they had to squeeze us in a busy schedule but they did and we were very pleased.

From the first contact with Theresa and Mark, to the completion of the job, we had an excellent experience. We had a total of 1,215 square feet either refinished and/or installed. Two weeks prior to installation, Theresa came to our home when the wood was delivered to make sure everything was delivered as ordered. Mark and his crew came in on day 1 and got right to work. They took care to hang plastic in all doorways, over smoke detectors and ceiling lights to protect them from any sawdust created from sanding. Each day they carefully cleaned up everything from that day's work. We had very little remaining dust, considering that the entire first floor was "under construction." They were conscientious enough to turn off the air conditioning unit so that the sawdust would not be circulated throughout the house. Mark took special (and patient!) care in helping us select the perfect stain color on day 2. He sanded into our existing flooring so we could see the colors next to what we previously had. The finished job is absolutely gorgeous! All the imperfections from the (old) wood floors were gone and the new areas were stunning! Mark and his entire crew are gifted craftsmen and did an outstanding job. They were a pleasure to work with, and we felt so comfortable with them working in our home. We would wholeheartedly recommend Cox Hardwood Flooring! We will definitely hire them for our next home improvement project!

Super! They were prompt on their arrival. The sealed the openings to the room with plastic for dust control. While one sanded the others 2 gentlemen sanding the edges and around the fireplace. Once the sanding was finished, the vacuumed the floor thoroughly. They removed the plastic coverings for all openings to the room and took it with them as waste. While 1 gentlemen was rolling on the protective sealant, one other gentlemen cut out the edges. The 3 individual took their equipment to the truck. They were very polite and professional. They were helpful in providing advise as what we could do to any rooms flooring. I would highly recommend Cox Flooring Company. We attempted to do the floors ourselves, but apparently rented the wrong equipment for the job. This is a very busy time of year for them, yet they were willing to squeeze us in. They couldn't have been nicer and helpful. The floor looks great!
Description of Work: They sanded and put a protective sealent on a 12x24 livingroom hardwood floor.
