Description of Work: They did a great job in cleanup and making the place safe. However a mistake made during teardown lead to them having to subcontract some repair work, sadly tho, the company they chose made them look slow and ended up accounting for more than a 3rd of the repair cost. | |Next time I would use them, however, I would be more vigilant about who they subcontract work to.

We had a flood in the basement during a period of heavy rain. I spent the night calling insurance companies, plumbers and water mitigation companies. Paul Davis was the only company out of 4 that I called that took the time to explain to me the process, answer my questions, and promise to follow-up the next day (all their crews were engaged taking care of other homes at the time of my call). The next day they called as promised and then had the patience to answer each of my 4 or 5 calls after that to ask questions. Finally we decided to begin the clean-up process ourselves instead of waiting on an available crew. Paul Davis employees walked me patiently through each step advising us how to clean up, what to get rid of and what products to use. They invited me to call back at any time if we got stuck and were unclear how to proceed.
Description of Work: Paul Davis helped us to figure out our way through a basement flood (septic back-up).

It went very well once it got going, there was some confusion regarding what document I needed to sign to get it moving along.
Description of Work: Did a number of repairs and renovations for a house on the market after it'd been lived in a number of years my my ex's son.
Called for appointment and made date for site visit. Received estimate in about 5 days. Asked for a less inclusive estimate and got that quickly. Accepted the full set. Over a period of 7-10 days and according to schedule: First up was to remove old lighting, install new wiring and switches/dimmers and then pot lighting in kitchen and family room. Some duct mods on AC in breakfast area were done to allow for silencing noisy plumbing from upstairs. Next drywall repairs were made and the ceiling "popcorn" resprayed. Next came replacing the counter tops with a new sink and existing disposal, reverse osmosis and faucet. Finally the flooring was done; a small adjustment was promptly performed, and new molding was stained to match the floor. We later had the electrician return to do several custom light installations (not part of the original job.) Very professional, were accommodating of our family schedules, and overall did excellent work . Would not hesitate to have them back to do remods. Don't have any "dos" or "dont's" ,other than watching that things were done as planned.. no issues at all.

Mold remediation is a very involved process. This company has IICRC trained and certified people on staff. Every part of their protocol from start to finish is exactly what should be done to safely remove mold without contamination. A pair of HEPA air scrubbers were brought in, all furniture was covered, carpet was covered with sticky-backed plastic from front door to bedroom and all of the bedroom, bathroom was sealed off, air vents were sealed off including the return, and the closet was enclosed with plastic with one of the scrubbers inside. The enclosure was sealed off so negative air pressure existed inside. The bedroom door was sealed and the guys donned their hazmat suits. Then and only then was the mold removed and double-bagged along with the insulation and carpet and pad. They examined the underlying and surrounding structure to insure no contamination then HEPA-vacuumed the rest of the closet. They then removed their suits, bagged them and brought everything removed to their truck. They called the drywall contractor and set up a time the next morning for installing new drywall. Came on time and completed the job in about an hour and a half. Said the sander would come the next morning. He did and had it all sanded in about an hour and a half. Then the Paul Davis group came back and methodically undid all the protection, cleaned the whole bedroom as they went including the walls, then steam cleaned the carpet after all protection was removed. The room is cleaner than it was the day we moved in or anytime since. The air scrubbers ran from the time they set them up until they took them down as they undid everything. After five days and the closet still had a distinct odor, I called the original tech and left a voicemail. He didn't have an idea why it would smell but he did call us back from his vacation in Florida!! He said he'd talk to his office manager and someone would be in touch with us to check out the problem. The next afternoon, I got a call from another guy and he came to check it out. He found the source of the problem, sealed it up with some caulking I provided, and put my replacement carpet back down. He also offered to check his warehouse for carpet remnants and drop off any that might do a better job of matching than what I had temporarily placed in the closet. These guys are good, they know their job, they communicate well and are very professional. If they would contaminate the house, it would mean we would have to move as my wife has a medical condition that makes her very sick with any exposure to toxic mold or green algae. She has felt better since the job was completed, so apparently she was getting some exposure from what we had in the closet, although it was a minimal amount. It's a long story I won't get into.
Description of Work: Company assessed mold in bedroom closet, gave estimate and we established a start date. They removed the moldy drywall and the insulation behind it. They determined that there was no mold on the floor structure or the studs behind it. They also removed the carpet and pad with mold on it. Coordinated with the drywall contractor to replace the insulation and drywall the next morning. The morning after that, drywall contractor sanded and left. Paul Davis guys came and removed the temporary enclosure, cleaned the whole room, uncovered all the furniture, pulled up the carpet cover and cleaned the carpet including the hall on the way out the front door. Questions in a week were quickly answered, came and checked out the job and solved the issue, all within 24 hours.
We were satisfied with the end result but we had a lot of issues throughout. The timing was not good. They were really delayed from the contract. It was over 1 1/2 months. The pricing was competitive. We would probably use them again.
Description of Work: We used Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling to finish our basement. They had contractors to do the plumbing, electrical and framing.

They tore all the stonework off the front and sides of the house. Replaced rotted wood underneath and then replaced with new stone. They did a good job of this and I was quite happy until I found the leak was not fixed. At first they were quite responsive to trying to resolve the problem but eventually wanted more money to fix the problem. They tried to blame the problem on the windows not being installed correctly. It was just a smokescreen to try to get more money. I found this out when I hired another contractor to fix the leak (at less than half of what Paul Davis wanted to charge me to finish the job they should have done in the first place). The new contractor quickly spotted the problem as being the fact that when the new stone was installed no flashing was done around the windows. Don't know if Paul Davis or his subcontractor removed original flashing or not. Most likely there never was any which caused the leak from the start. Anyway the new contractor removed stone around the windows, installed flashing and reinstalled stone. There has not been any water leakage since this was done. Paul Davis Restoration can make all the excuses they want. The results speak for themselves.

Called Paul Davis in the late morning, told them the issue, and was told someone would call back. Kevin called back shortly after that, and was at my house within a few hours. Paul Davis (i.e. Kevin) was much more thorough than the other two companies that I had out for estimates, as he used a water detector to find out just how far the damage went in the flooring and adjacent walls. Neither of the other two companies used a water detector, or checked the adjacent walls for damages. Kevin told me that I would have to pick out the flooring, and he went over the advantages and disadvantages if we choose laminate, ceramic, or vinyl flooring. Kevin told me he would e-mail 3 different estimates for laminate/ceramic/vinyl flooring the next day, and had the estimates to me the next morning, just as promised. I scheduled repairs for earlier today (10/14/11) with Kevin, and the two man crew called before their arrival, and showed up on time.. The repairers (Jim and Gabe) first laid out a tarp, and were very careful when moving the washer/dryer and toilet out of the way, and made sure not to cause any additional damage while moving these heavy items. They, cleaned up after themselves, disposed of the old flooring, and even helped find a good plumbing referral for a leaking water heater. Jim and Gabe were also very professional, and friendly guys. And the new bathroom floor looks great! I would recommend Paul Davis to everybody because they are professional, deliver on what they promise, and seem to strive for getting the job done correctly the first time. I will surely call them in the future, as other issues arise.

I appreciated that the Paul Davis employees told us that the window was covered under warranty rather than conducting the work. We instead had the window repaired at no cost to us.
Description of Work: I had a window that had water damage and mold. Representatives arrived onsite to review the damage and provide a quote. They arrived on time and took the measurements. I was called a few days later and I was told the window was still under warranty with Pella. I contacted Pella, and the window in deed was still covered under warranty.

We had water damage from frozen pipes right before Christmas. Our insurance company told us about Paul Davis. They got out right away to fix our pipes, but took over a month to dry our house and as I understand, mold can grow in 3 days. We had different people coming each time and they didn't know what had been done or needed done. They didn't have enough equipment and didn't put access holes in to allow drying so more of our ceiling fell down. Half our garage and half the laundry room ceiling was down and they didn't even put plastic over it in the dead of winter until several weeks later when I finally asked them to. They also broke off a corner of the new tile around our bathtub and broke our toilet tissue holder. To be fair, it was a busy time with the ice storm, but it never got better, even after several weeks. We also asked for the details of the bill and they were very hesitant to give it to us. We were also going to have them do the repair but we kept getting different people who didn't know what was going on and who could not seem to just give us an estimate with what needed done on it (nor could they even keep it straight from one conversation to the next), even several months later. We finally said forget it and went with someone else who was quick, professional, thorough and whom we are extremely happy with at this point (halfway thru getting everything fixed). Based on our experience I would never recommend them.
Description of Work: We had water damage from frozen pipes right before Christmas. We woke up and the floor was covered with water. Paul Davis sent a plumber to fix the broken pipes (2) and who also fixed another pipe that had split and when the other pipes were fixed and thawed out, it started leaking. Then they had people come and suck up the water and put dehumidifiers and fans in various rooms. They also ended up removing the insulation from the affected areas and taking down some of our ceilings.

Response from Paul Davis
In regard to the water loss with the member in January of 2009, there were actually three losses. At three different times spanning a couple of weeks there were separate pipe breaks in the house due to a prolonged electrical outage stemming from an ice storm. Because of this the drying period was prolonged. In addition to the problem with the reoccurring frozen pipes, the house has plaster walls and vermiculite ceiling insulation - materials which are particularly difficult to dry. It is likely that these circumstances created confusion for the customer. Thus, even as one area was drying another area was being affected. Unfortunately we had no way of knowing that additional water breaks had occurred. Compounding the problem was the fact that we were in a complete City-wide emergency and were attempting to assist almost 200 customers in similar circumstances. Under the circumstances we were unable to meet our normal service standards. Although this was difficult for many of our customers we understand that the situation was particularly difficult for some. Our invoicing reflects the details itemized on our estimate which was attached to the invoice. For this job the estimate was six pages long due to the extensive nature of the loss. We recognize that our estimates include a lot of information with which the average individual is not likely to be familiar. This detail is required by insurance companies however, and we make every effort to explain the detail to our customers and answer any questions they may have. To the best of our knowledge the estimate and invoice were understood by the customer. During this period (the ice storm and aftermath) large sections of the City were without power for up to a week. There was extensive damage throughout the area and we were forced to cover our jobs with whatever staff was available. Often this resulted in the appearance of disorganization and poor communication as employees attempted to cover all the bases. Needless to say it was a difficult time and hardly typical of how Paul Davis restoration operates. There was never any sign of mold at this loss. Although it is possible for mold to begin growing in three days that only happens when circumstances promote mold growth (i.e., the presence of water, adequate temperature and environmental factors). The reason there was no mold despite the extended drying period is because we were in fact drying the structure the entire time. The plaster and insulation extended the dry time but mold does not grow in materials that are in an accelerated process of drying even though that process extends beyond three days. As a certified mold remediation firm we know how to prevent and eliminate mold and we have never had a mold problem due to our handling of a water mitigation job. Finally, it was our understanding early in the process that they had a friend that they planned to use to repair the structural damage at the house. We were never under the impression that they wanted us to do the repairs but we did provide a complimentary estimate for the repairs that would they could use as a basis for settling with their insurance company. We did offer to repair the ceramic tile and replace the damaged toilet paper dispenser.
