Family owned & operated roofing and remodeling company. We are in the business of making people happy about their home and building investments. When we service people with excellent remodel technicians, there is a confident satisfaction wherein they are glad to refer us to their friends and neighbors. Financing offered at initial appointment.
Good, except for the confusion about when it was done.
Description of Work: Inspected roof for issues seen during a home inspection. Gave me an estimate and pictures of the items we should fix. When we agreed to the service they sent a repair man, but did not tell us and did not send an invoice. I did not know they did the work (since it is on the roof) so I called and found out they did and reminded them to bill me. The owner was very friendly and even came out to check on the work after it was done. He wanted one more thing fixed and did that without any additional charge.

Sales rep contacted me. Roofing business was slow and wondered if we were considering any home improvements so we scheduled a free home estimate. Sales rep brought in a flooring specialist to review installation of 900 sp ft of laminate flooring. They offered a quote. I confirmed that the specialist they brought in would be the installer on the job. The sales rep said Yes. I signed the contract even though it was higher than others because I liked the installer. I asked how soon could they start removing old sub flooring. Sales Rep told me within one or two days. On day two they brought in a different person to removed sub flooring. I was uncomfortable with this different installer. So after two days he was removed from the job. Before he was dismissed he convinced the owner that our flooring had Unforeseen problems and would need an additional quote. The owner suggested a $1900 increase over the phone. The owner came to our home the next day and lowered the increase to $920. When we declined he quoted a contract release would cost us appox. $2600 for 38 hours of his time at $65/hour. When we challenged these options he returned to our home with the original installer that the Sales rep said would be doing our job. The contract increase then dropped to $340. We agreed to the contract increase if the owner would agreed to use the installer that was originally promised. He told us the original installer decided to pass on the contract. We later discovered that the installer put in a bid for our job but the owner found some one with a lower bid. We finally negotiated an additional payment of $600 for a total payment of $1500 for the owner to sign a contract release form.

The person we originally planned to do this work with a subcontractor who later informed us he was not available when the homeowner wanted the job done. Therefore, we arranged for an employee to do the work. The homeowner had an apparent prejudice / racist view against the employee due to him being an Indian. We later brought back the original installer in an attempt to accommodate her, Her floor had many major warped issues, and as we explained options to her, she made it clear that she basically wanted her warped floor to be perfect without paying for it. The installer she wanted said he did not want to work for a woman with so much drama so he refused to do any work for her. Our contract never stated I would twist his arm to work for a person with so much drama - even if she really wanted him to do the work. She drove away the installer she liked and wanted, and would not let our Indian Foreman start the install. Our contract did not state that a person of a particular nationality would perform the work. To complain about finished work that is incorrect is one thing. To ASSUME an Indian can't perform as well as another, and to want more than what she paid for is very unfortunate. We let her out of the deal. I like challenges, but about 1 to 2% of homeowners leak out that they plan to make more trouble than the job is worth. Thanks for breaking your end of the contract before we did the install.
Thomas Jefferson did my new hardwood floor and new ktichen countertops. They finished quickly and did a great job. when my new cooktop didn't fit they came out and adjusted the countertops to fit it, the same day I asked them!

Tim Gilliam gave us a quote for replacing our asphalt roof and rotted gutter boards. He was polite and professional. The quote we received was higher than from competing companies. Based on a neighbor's experience, we looked at the competed job and pointed out what appeared to be a big ripple in the asphalt shingles of the completed roof. That led us to researching on Angie's List to find the company was rated overall a C. That was a huge red flag for us. The company does offer a 10 year warranty on all work, however.

I have a leak develop following the roof replacement the did in the past. It was leaking like dripping faucet. My son's friend is a roofer and suggested that I call them to have it fixed and have a window replacement. The prices are excellent, but I guess you get what you paid for. I have oak trim, he asked if I wanted dark or light trim. He came over New Years Eve at 10 pm at night. He stated it would take 14 days to get the window in, this was on December 31, 2008. I gave him a deposit for $600. He came over March 2, 2009 with the window. They left the window in the garage and littered the yard with card board. He calls at odd times and he does not schedule to do the work. He simply calls and states he is going to come over and do the work. He catches you off guard with is. I do not trust would like him to take the window back and refund the money. This all follows work they did on the roof and should have been taken care of at that point. If they really knew what they were doing this would have been done when they replaced the roof.
Description of Work: The window above a porch roof is leaking. This is the second time that the roof has started leak. They came and stated the wood was rotting and I would have to replace the window. This happened towards the end of December, beginning January. This work should have been done when they replaced the roof.

1)It is absolutely absurd to state that when any company replaces a roof they should replace windows as well. As you can see from this same persons rating on September 10, 2007, she hired us to replace her roof, we did, and she gave us five A ratings. Thank you for your honesty at that time. 2)After she called and assumed her roof leaked, we saw that she had a rotted window which was the cause of her leak, not her roof! Roofs are not windows, and windows are not roofs. I showed her pictures and suggested she and or her approximately 21 year old son see it for themselves. She signed a contract for us to fix the window, and after finding further rot inside, we signed a contract to replace the leaking window. Since she knows the window is leaking, she should do the right thing and stop slandering us by stating our roof leaks. 3)On New Year's Eve I had an appointment to go there after a specified time. I did so, but it was not near 10 PM. The customer and I talked with me that evening as though we were very good friends as she always did. She was apparently glad to talk with me as I was her only company besides her son who planned to leave. Out of respect for her, I listened to her tell story after story for perhaps 60 minutes until I finally politely told her for the second time it was my anniversary and that I needed to leave. 4) On about 4 times that I proposed we do the work, she declined often citing cold weather. She seemed very disinterested in doing the work during the winter to the point that I did not ask her again until March 2nd. She never once called and asked for it to be installed sooner! She agreed for us to do it March 2nd. I then picked up the window. She then called and rescheduled to install the window any day the following week except Tuesday, citing that she needed to take her son to the hospital. Since I already spent hours loading up the window, and had help available to unload it, I went to her house to drop it off. She was home and seemed shocked that we would find her there (instead of at the hospital), but let us drop off the window nonetheless. Prior to that, I could not have asked for a better relationship with her. 5)A few days later her son calls me and gets extremely nasty about me stopping over unannounced, not doing the work sooner, and leaving one piece of cardboard in their yard - and that is why they are canceling. I explained to him that we were so focused on carefully unloading the very heavy triple-window that the cardboard must have blown away without us seeing it. Though I apologized for accidentally leaving one piece of buffer cardboard in their yard, it did not matter to him. 6) A respectful and rational thing to do would be to make at least one phone call to requesting that the work get done despite her prior delays. They received nothing but tremendous respect from me and their slanderous complaint is undeserved.

He was very honest about what to do and what to do about it. I had some problems with leakage after the fact and they came right out, realized they forgot to do something and fixed it immediately. He helped me pick out a new color of shingles and gave me information on what was the best kind of shingles.

They were out last July for the original re-roof. When I came back from a trip, I found that the new roof leaked. I called them up, and they had to tear off and replace 50 squares that they had not done right the first time. I was skeptical at first, but they were very responsive to the problems, and came out to fix it without complaint. They told me that I needed a new porch roof, which I had them replace. I came back from another trip, and their was water in kitchen. They came back out pretty promptly to replace that as well. I had two roofs in less than 6 months! I came back from another trip and heard loud banging in the night. A piece of the metal sheeting that they'd applied where the porch joins the house had come loose. They came out to fix that also. They've been good about coming back, and gave me a 4 year warranty.

WE DID NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THE ROOF WE INSTALLED, BUT SINCE OUR QUALITY STANDARDS ARE VERY HIGH, WE CHOSE TO DO SO. THAT IS THE ONLY TIME WE EVER CHOSE TO DO THAT, AND THE CREW WE USED NO LONGER WORKS FOR US SO WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE THAT HAPPENING AGAIN. AS FOR THE PRICE, ANY TIME A HOMEOWNER, CONTRACTOR, AND INSURANCE COMPANY AGREE TO A PRICE, WHY SHOULDN'T THE RATING FOR THE PRICE ALWAYS BE AN 'A'.

This was a horrible experience overall. The roof is complete but the awning they installed was incorrect in size and installed improperly. They came out to try to fix it once because the snow made everything collapse. They took it down and hammered it out straight and put the same one back up. For the amount of money I spent with them, they should have replaced it correctly with correct size. His professionalism is not good because he won't do anything else even though the job is only 75% completed. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone!

It is an absolute lie to say 'the snow made everything collapse.' Out of about 100 major pieces of this awning, our pictures and her adjuster's pictures prove only one piece buckled due to an inordinate amount of snow and ice built up on the awning. As she sought support from her own insurance adjuster in unjustly condemning our company over this purlin that buckled, this adjuster instead agreed that it was storm damage and agreed to pay for the purlin to be replaced-the only piece damaged. I asked the member at least 5 times to let us replace this purlin for the amount of money that the insurance agreed was the claim amount, but she refused. She wants us to fix it without being paid the insurance claim money for it, as she hides the fact that her insurance company is willing to pay for us to fix it. Why would we not believe she wants to pocket the insurance money? When the homeowner states that the awning is the incorrect size, what she really means is that she learned the mfg could have made the custom flashing on the sides that we crafted ourselves. My response is that IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER THE CUSTOM FLASHING WAS CUSTOMIZED BY US OR AGE CRAFT AS LONG AS IT LOOKS PROFESSIONAL AND IT KEEPS WATER OUT! What more could a reasonable person want from a roof or awning than that it is what they chose, it keeps water out, and that it looks professional? She has yet to give me the name of one professional that states our job is unprofessional. This chronic deceiver arranged for BBB to arbitrate her complaint hoping she would be awarded to keep approximately $5,000 of funds due to our company. After the arbitrator saw that the awning had one piece that buckled and that the snow did make ‘everything collapse’ as she had stated in her Angie’s List complaint. She then stated that Angie’s List did not report it correctly. Her own adjuster agreed with us that it was storm damage that caused the buckle and her insurance paid for it. The arbitrator ordered the customer to have us fix it and get paid for it on this second insurance claim. The arbitrator could not find any faulty work of ours so he had an independent contractor inspect our work. His report was that our work was fine – negating everyone of her complaints. We WON THE ARBITRATION AS SHE WAS NOT AWARDED TO KEEP ONE PENNY DUE TO US. Unfortunately, she still refused to pay until months later when a lawsuit was prepared for trial. Tim Gilliam- President

They're subcontractors are totally incompetent. The original estimate was for $14,250 and they tried to change that to $37,000. They sent unlicensed subcontractors who come at all hours without any appointments and they just hang around my home and don't work or they use unsafe practices including contaminating my ventilation system. The work started without any supervision and their fire, electrical, and heath codes were violated. I would never recommend Affordable Home Renovations to anyone!

[removed member name], There is a big difference between what we originally planned to do and what you told me you wanted done. Our crew waited as they should until all matters are clear and unambiguous. When two parties cannot fully agree, they should walk away as we peacefully did. You are not in a position to judge our finished work when we did not finish anything. Let's be fair and accurate. The net result is that you got much service for which you did not pay us. And after we saw there was no end to the free work you were demanding, it is best we packed up and left. Both parties could have been more precise in the beginning, and for that on our part, I do apologize.

I requested an estimate for roofing work on recently purchased property (three other estimates were also requested to other companies). Affordable Home Renovations even sent pictures with an explanation of the work they recommended; they didn't add any extras like vents, etc. that were not necessary, and said they wouldn't know about sheeting replacement until the old roof was off. I signed the contract 12/29 and paid half down for the deposit. They called to say they were on the way, sent pictures of the completed work, and said they had to replace two sheets and invoiced it. They were responsive to an out of town investor, did what they said, charged and what they quoted. I was very pleased with their work. We hit a weather break and they were right on it! Their quick work saved months of additional water damage! Alex was very good at returning phone calls.

The timeliness of their work was unreasonable. Weeks would go by and I'd have to keep calling them. The flashing they originally put up was done horribly (only went on two sides and was bent). We told them that we needed professional work. After that they came out and looked at it, and agreed that the flashing and shingles were installed poorly, so they agreed to redo that. Another gentleman came out and said that work was substandard, but they still haven't come out to repair it. They ordered the wrong window (a vinyl window, we wait for for 6 weeks), finally ordered the correct window and it finally came in September. At one point, they told me that it was in, then found out that the right window hadn't even been ordered. They asked if I even wanted the window, we said no because it was ordered 4 months after our original contract. We don't want this company to install it.

According to our 1st of 2 agreements, it states "50%% of payment is due after materials arrive and work starts." She never paid us anything and therefore has no ethical reason to complain about anything. As for the chimney work that was incomplete, we corrected that incomplete work and we will no longer do business with the person who left it unfinished. As for the $809.94 special order (non-returnable) window that this homeowner had us order and later changed her mind about, I told her that if she wanted someone else to install it, she could do so. But for her to just change her mind about the style she wants, and then to expect us to absorb the cost of this window that she clearly had us order, that is very unethical and we want to be compensated. As for our second agreement, she has not complained about that at all and she has not paid for that either. Publicly trashing us because we will not agree to pay for her window is unethical and immoral too. Tim Gilliam, President

I called and got an appointment for the next day. Zach came to do the estimate. He arrived on time and was professional and courteous as he got the information he needed. After taking pictures & measuring, he told me that he'd get the estimate to me in 1-2 days via e-mail. I hadn't heard from him 12 days later, so I called the office. I spoke with Tim, the company's president, and let him know the situation, that I was waiting on an estimate from Zach. He said that he'd call Zach and find out what the hold up was. No one called be back on that, but Zach did stop by the next day with the estimate in hand. He took the time to explain the estimate to me. Evidently, it took him a while to find a company that would make a replacement skylight of this size. He did find one though. He was the only one who did. My husband and I decided, however, that because this skylight came with only a 5 yr. warranty and the smaller ones came with a 10 yr. warranty, that we'd go with them.

The representative I worked with was very nice. The work they did was acceptable upon completion. Problems were they left an obscene amount of nails all over the yard. I realize that when you get a new roof many nails will be left behind, but I would venture to say that there were over 800 nails left behind. And that is just the nails that I found. Also they needed to come back and fix a few things. And when they came back they would not fix all of the things on the list and would have to come back out to fix them again. What should have taken about three days took three weeks. The most disturbing problem was that they left my garage exposed and it rained that night. I called them to let them know and they apologized and said that it should not have happened.

2 skids of shingles were dropped off at my home after I hired them. 2 weeks later the salesman called me and threatened to put a lien on my house unless I paid him for the shingles. He was no longer with the company. The GM of the company called me and made an appointment with me & then didn't show up for 3 appointments. When I contacted him, he got angry at me, stating that the salesman was hired back & he was to get a hold of me. I then called the owner & he promised the work would be done. I told him we needed to hold off until everything was in writing. I came home one day & half of my roof was torn off. The workers there did not speak any English & could not communicate with me anything that was going on. They were doing terrible work. They finished the roof but would not give me a receipt stating that the roof was paid & I want to be done with them. The siding was twice as much as they originally stated and I picked the roof out because of this. I don't have the money.

I had another company here giving me an estimate also so I asked the representative from Affordable Home to fax me the estimate when done and gave him my fax number. He said OK. This was approximately three weeks ago and I still do not have the estimate. I have of course since hired another company.

OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE PROMPT TIMELY SERVICE IN A VERY RESPECTFUL WAY. IN MISSING THAT TARGET, WE APOLOGIZE. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY PEOPLE AFTER SUCH A HAIL STORM WILL HAVE TO WAIT 3 WEEKS. CONTRACTORS ARE HOPEFUL PEOPLE WILL BE UNDERSTANDING.

During the power washing, we discovered weeds that needed to be addressed before continuing with the sealing. He (Tim) said that he was going to seal over the weeds with product that I had already purchased and it stated that any weeds needed to be removed before application, I even called the company to make sure. He wanted to spray the product over the weeds, which I was not happy about. I contacted my lawn company and they said that they would be able to remove the weeds and spray a preventative product to keep them from growing back, but it would take 10 days for the product to take affect. Tim and I agreed on 4/27 that he would come back out to finish the work and he didn't show up. When I called him, he told me he got busy and finally sent someone out. They were only able to do a portion of the work before their equip. failed and rain was on its way. They did not honor their contract and misrepresented themselves, also overcharged for the work.
Description of Work: I hired them to power wash our circle driveway, seal and put sand in the joints.

We did return to complete the work on the date we had agreed with the customer. There was a misunderstanding in that the customer thought we were to be there at 8 am. however, we had several other jobs scheduled and had not planned on arriving at 8 am. After starting the work that was planned for this date, we had a mechanical issue with the new sprayer. The on-site contractor explained this situation to the customer and called the company owner via cell phone. The customer was very upset. The company owner spoke with the customer, apologized and explained that he would personally come on-site that same day and complete the spraying. The customer was unwilling to work with us on resolving the issue. The customer lives in a gated subdivision. Upon arrival to complete the spraying, the customer would not let the owner into the subdivision. We feel that we made every effort to resolve the issue in a fair and timely matter. The customer was not willing to let us resolved the matter and had someone else complete the spaying. The customer had signed an agreement with our company. We have told the customer that we would credit the $95 she paid the other party from the balance due our company. Lesley Bonds OM 5/25/06

EVERYTHING IS GOOD EXCEPT THE PRICING SITUATION. EVERYTHING HAD BEEN COMPLETED BUT THEY ARE NOW SAYING THAT I OWE $717.77 MORE WHEN ALL WAS ORIGINALLY PAID IN FULL. THEY ARE NOW SAYING THAT THE UPGRADED SHINGLES AND THE MORTAR CAP IS EXTRA. THE MORTAR CAP THE WAS NOT TRULY REPLACED LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. HE USED SOME CONCRETE MIX TO PATCH IT, NOT REPLACE IT. NOW 2 1/2 MONTHS LATER THE CRACK IS REAPPEARING. THE ROOFERS BENT MY GUTTERS AND FIXED IT WITH TOUCH UP PAINT.
Description of Work: They had to take the roof off, take the decking off and the insulation off and replace it. Shingles were harbor blue regular shingles--which have been discontinued. The new shingles were harbor blue but were an upgrade. Replace the mortar cap on top of the chimney (it was cracked).

Our contract clearly states, "Upgrade to laminate 30 yr shingle add $330, and "Install mortar cap on chimney add $150." They were written on the contract twice and then he signed it. "Install" does not mean we will demo his old cap first such as might be the case if we used the word "replace", that he claims we used. These items are separately priced because they are NOT itmes the Insurance Company would pay for, nor did the insurance co. or anyone with our company say the would pay for them. We are in the process of providing this information to the homeowner, but he probably already has it directly from the insurance co. The only way we heard of a crack in the chimney mortar cap was by his Angie's List complaint. We believe customers should have the common courtesy to inform contractors of their complaints and concerns before condemning them in public. Also, he should not complain about an improvement for which he refused to pay. We will offer to fix the crack in writing soon on the condition that he assures us he will pay for it when we are done.
