Ralph Woods Masonry LLC

Masonry, Chimney Repair, Foundation Repair,

About us

My company is very small and I like to be involved in every job working with my crew in one way or another. I enjoy this work and my crew has been with me a long time so I know who is on your property. I pay my employment, insurance and business taxes on time. My crews do not sign waivers as I pay for workmans comp because waivers are considered unethical. We will adjust to handle most any job, big or small. Please know, if there is ever a problem, let me know so I can work on a solution. Thank you for your consideration, Ralph

Ralph and his crew were prompt and pleaseant to work with. Ralph does much of the work himself rather than sending a crew and I appreciate that greatly. He was able to work my small project into a busy schedule and he returned to finish it in a timely manner. There were discussions about masonry that I found educational and helpful. I would hire him again.
Description of Work: Parts of my house and chimney needed tuck-pointing. Ralph and his crew were able to reach the areas with ladders. They ground out some of the old mortar which made a massive amount of dust, but they cleaned it up pretty well. (Warning: DON'T have your windows washed before tuck-pointing.) A metal window in my basement was broken and rusting. Ralph replaced it with glass block that included a dryer vent. The window wasn't ready right away but came within a week and Ralph was very prompt about getting back to it. I needed a couple of (concrete block) basement walls to be tuck pointed to keep moisture from seeping in. One of the walls had a skim coating over it and Ralph replicated that.

During certain times of the year, I am so busy working in the field that I have trouble getting to estimates especially when I am working on big jobs. Because my company is so small and old fashioned, sometimes I can't keep up like I would like to because I do a lot on my own. I apologize if this happens but if you really need an estimate from me and you haven't received one, please call me on my cell and let me know so I can get one to you. Sometimes it is just a matter of the emailed estimate not going through. Thanks Ralph

Ralph did a great job. I wish I had used him the first time.
Description of Work: Ralph repaired and re-mortared out Blue Stone patio. The previous work was done incorrectly and all the stones became unattached from the mortar within a year of being laid. Ralph removed the faulty mortar, prepped the patio and correctly mortared the Blue Stone to our concrete patio.

Ralph was the only person we found who was willing to take on a somewhat scary job (replacing the footer of a 40 ft chimney, in place), and he seemed as if he had done it many times before. Ralph started within a few days of our agreement to do the work. He was there every day for a week, some days only for a few hours because he would have to let the concrete/mortar dry before continuing. He clearly didn't want to job to languish, once he started he wanted to finish. My only (minor) compaint would be that his clean-up left a little to be desired. The quality of the work was fantastic and everything went smoothly.
Description of Work: Our house was built in 1880 and had a lot of historic masonry repairs needed. One chimney's footing was crumbling, Ralph excavated around the base of it, poured concrete and block as a footer, then replaced most of the brick on the bottom 6 feet of the chimney (nearly 40 ft tall) with hisotric looking brick, because it was crumbling, and created a fake firebox, because it was so far gone that making it functional would have been nearly impossible. Ralph also chisled away plaster covering the brick and rebuilt the firebox on a second chimney and rebuilt a firebox on a thrid.

Very accommodating with my schedule and had work finished within days since he was able to use original extra bricks I had. Would hire him again or recommend to others without hesitation.

Ralph took a little while to come out for the estimate, but it was worth the wait. His estimate was lower than the others and he worked hard to provide quality work. He and his crew found a good match for the bricks, cleaned those that could be reused, and cleaned up the site each day. Ralph identified the best and most cost effective fix to my crumbling steps. He also noticed a pattern mismatch in the original installation and corrected it.

Overall, the job went very well. The tough part of doing work like this in November is the weather. Ralph communicated with me in a punctual manner and executed the job very efficiently. His price was ~1000 less than others I called and he was very detailed in explaining what his team would do to repair the masonry to include cheaper options if I wanted.

I was more than pleased work the results. He had me go outside and examine different steps of the repair so that it was clear what was being done. He and his crew were very conscientious in every aspect. The job before mine ran longer than he had expected; as a result, he did the work at my place on a Sunday so that it could be completed before the weather might turn bad.
Description of Work: Repaired concrete foundation wall by cutting out damaged, cracked wall and repairing with all patch lite 20. Dug below grade to make sure crack was repaired completely. On the outside corner of home, installed metal straps to help prevent further wall movement. He touched up foundation so repair was not obvious. He performed proper finishing work for clean appearance, cleaned up the work area, and hauled away whatever debris.

It took them over a month to do the job. After the initial job, they had to wait for it to dry, and then clean it and seal it. It probably took them only a week to do the actual work. They did a good job and they were really responsive. They would sweep up the dust at the end of the day, but sometimes, there was still a lot of dust and stuff remaining, which I think is probably impossible to keep up with when you are doing this kind of work. But since I am pickier than the average person, I would go out and sweep it out again. The work looks very nice, and you can?t even tell that we had some brick work done - and we appreciate that because the work is in front of our house where everyone can see it. My husband and I both thought that their price was expensive - they were twice the price that another provider had quoted. But we also liked that they were going to do a lot more than the other provider was going to do. The price was totally for the labor; they used the same bricks we already had, although they did have to clean the bricks, but it wasn?t like they had to buy new material. I would use them again.
Description of Work: We have a brick house and there is an arch above the garage door. There wasn’t correct support put in there when the house was built. It caused some of it to fall a little bit and the grout was beginning to crack. We used Ralph Woods Masonry to tear out the whole section, about 3 feet high above the garage door, clean the bricks, build and install a template to support the brick arch and to re-install the keystone.

Third time we have used Ralph but the first time for new construction. Job went well but it was a long process because Ralph's company is small and this was a much larger job than most because everything was done by hand. My property is on a hill and all materials (75 tons) had to be carted by hand as equipment couln't be used. We found my soil was shale underneath so it was very tough digging. Ralph insisted in doing everything right and so it would last for a long time, he poured the largest footers I have ever seen. I attached pictures because they speak for themselves.

Ralph promptly returned my initial phone call, showed up at the designated time and promptly provided a written estimate. His office assistant, Susan was awesome in helping to coordinate the work and even provided information on where I could view Ralph's work. I needed to have another person present to inspect my home at the time Ralph did his work and Ralph was very receptive. He actually prolonged his work so this could be done. The work was done in a timely manner. Ralph was on site and supervised his hard working crew. After the work was done, the area was cleaned. I was not able to differentiate between Ralph's work and the other brick of the home. Ralph was extremely patient, answered ALL my questions, e-mails and phone calls. I have never had someone so dedicated work on my home and continue to help me with an ongoing water infiltration issue. Susan continues to follow-up and when she says, "Ralph will not leave you hanging", she is right!

I chose Ralph because of his experience with historic homes, & reputation. He was prompt with his estimate, which I thought was fair. His entire team showed up on schedule and got most of the work done in a day. They paid a lot of attention to the fact that this is a historic home and had to use certain mortar mix and brick matching etc. I was impressed by the fact that downstairs, they did most of the work without use of grinders, which would have sent plumes of dust everywhere. I did ask them to change out some of the bricks they had put in the chimney, and they noticed some old bricks stacked on top of porch columns, which had been there for years as result of a new porch addition years ago. So they were able to use bricks original to my house rather than used brick from elsewhere, plus I got rid of them from on top of the columns! Ralph explained everything to me, and I think did a terrific job on a porch repair that others have said just wouldn't look very good if I had it repaired. The way Ralph did it, you can't even tell. Another repair on the walkway didn't match as well, but they had to use a different compound for that locale, and it still looks good. I was a bit disappointed in that they didn't use drop cloths in the basement, and that some exterior bushes were damaged. But Ralph offfered to replace rug and bushes. I declined, but a word to those who have never had a lot of masonry work done- this is a nasty, dirty job, and these guys spend their day embroiled in clouds of dust and muck. So their idea of clean and tidy may be a bit different from yours---i.e. if you want something specific, you may have to remind them at the time the job starts, because they are focused on a hundred other things when they show up. Bottom line, Ralph did a great job, did just what he said he would, and worked with me until I was completely happy.
Description of Work: Tuck-point repair of foundation, repair of various issues on exterior from repair of porch steps to proper treatment of seam where exterior drive and walk meets the house, chimney tuck-pointing and repair, repair work on interior walls in basement and bricking up brick wall where old doorway used to be, and repairing exterior mortar damage around glass block basement windows..

They were very nice on the phone last week when I had puddles of water on my basement floor. I called them back on Friday and then again on Sunday and Monday and did not hear from them. We apologize for this and I would like to get to every quote as quickly as possible but my company is so small that when we have a lot of work especially in the spring and summer, the quotes get put on the back burner. It is really important for me to be on the jobs to supervise or along with the crew because in the end, I am responsible for the quality. I am trying to fit quotes in on bad weather days or between jobs and I apologize if we don't get to you right away. Ralph Woods

Mr. Woods and his staff were very pleasant and professional. Quotes were given in a very timely manner and phone calls and e-mails returned right away as well. They always arrived and worked when they were scheduled. Mr. Woods obviously cared about doing the job the correct way and wanted us to be satisfied with his work. All of the work was done well and each work area was left clean and all debris was hauled away. We would use Mr. Woods again.
Description of Work: Mr. Woods built scaffolding for work on two chimneys. He cut out damaged bricks and mortar joints and re-tuckpointed. He also inspected concrete caps. In addition, he repaired brick and mortar areas around the entire house, including a sitting wall on the patio which had a number of bricks that needed to be replaced as well as repairs to the brick front porch. He cleaned and sealed the bluestone patio and walk and the brick apron in front of the garage. Finally, Mr. Woods tore out a bluestone pad in front of our garden room which was sinking a bit. He salvaged the bluestone and totally rebuilt it from the sub-base and finally cleaned and sealed it.
