They do an excellent job. They are honest. I would give them the highest ratings on all counts and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I use The Care of Trees for tree service. They trimmed our Apple tree. We have used them for many years. They have earlier removed a bunch of Evergreen trees and put in a flowering Lilac tree.

Paul was very professional; much more so than any other tree service we've used in the past. Because of his extensive knowledge and detailed explanation regarding trimming and root fertilization, I was able to assess his recommendations and easily make a decision. I look forward to seeing the results of their services and highly recommend The Care of Trees.

They were very good. They were out here early. They took a bit more out of the tree than we were planning on, but the tree guy said that that was the better way to do it. They have an excellent supervisor that first comes out and tells us how the work will be done. Our next-door neighbor had used them, and we had seen them in the neighborhood too. We did not price around simply because they had done such a nice job next door, and we had liked what they had done; we just went with the recommendation that we got from the next-door neighbor. The quality of their work was very good, and they were very clean. They protected everything. We would rate them highly and would use them again in the future if necessary.

We called The Care of Trees when our insurance company was about to cancel our policy because of branches overhanging the roof. They were able to come out to give us a quote quickly and honestly appraised the situation with the trees. John was very helpful and honest when assessing the branches overhanging the roof. We decided it was best for the integrity of the trees to take them out all together. John took care of calling about the underground utilities and scheduling the crew for the trees. All of the work was done as promised and at a price that another company quoted us just for trimming the branches. We are looking forward to working with The Care of Trees again for our next yard project.

Tracy arrived punctually and met with my husband to discuss what needed to be done. The quote was specific, detailed, and the back of the form gave additional "boilerplate." Actually, we were not home when Tracy cut everything down, and we had several inches of snow almost immediately afterwards. But it is so peaceful to see the morning sunlight, and no more tree limbs dangle over buildings and electrical wires. Now that the snow is gone, we can see even more clearly how nice it all looks thanks to Tracy, and presumably his crew.
Description of Work: Removed two tree limbs, removed buckthorn and a small elm tree to about 2-3 inches above ground level, and ground down three additional stumps 4-6" below ground level, with chips left on the site. This a summary from the estimate.

We solicited two estimates (from Angie's List recommendations) and the arborists of both companies seemed knowledgeable. We went with the slightly lower estimation. The Care for Trees arborist also suggested that they remove the existing two stumps along with the ones we had originally requested, with no addition to the estimate. That suggestion made the area more workable for landscaping later on. When we signed the contract, we were advised that it would take three or four weeks for the work to be done. This was November, so there was the reliable possibility of snow factoring in. The cutting squad came almost exactly a month later and removed the trees with no problem. Weather intervened then with a substantial snowfall, and the grinding crew came a month later after the snow cleared. The workers were quite professional in their comportment and the jobs well done. We were initially disconcerted because the small print of the contract (standard, we assume) said that "unless otherwise arranged, our crew would present itself unannounced to do the scheduled work." And indeed, the first crew came unannounced. We then received an invoice for the tree cutting at the end of that month, but we wondered when or if the stump grinding would happen. We called the office; the secretary was very helpful and the arborist called us back the same day to tell us how the rest of the job would play out (he told us it was conventional for there to be a gap between cutting and stump-grinding and the snowfall that intervened in our case added time to the gap). He volunteered to call us the day before the grinding crew were to come, and did so. We think the staff of Care for Trees in Evanston (IL) are ready to meet the customers' needs graciously, and it is we who were unschooled about which questions to ask. We seem to have needed a bit more shepherding through the process. Nevertheless, we are very happy with their work and their personnel and would recommend the company to others.
Description of Work: Remove scrub trees in two areas, 4 marked trees in the back yard and a group of 8 trees in the front yard. Grind out 8 stumps in the front location and grind out two existing stumps in the same location, leveling backfill holes with chips.

I met with The Care of Trees to get an estimate for trimming our trees that had grown too many limbs that were in contact with our roof and also to see what the cost would be to remove a large Spruce tree that was too close to another Spruce. Travis arrived on time and was very willing to discuss various options to accomplish our project while maintaining a budget that we could work with. He gave us a detailed quote that allowed us to choose how much we would get done and the cost for pruning each tree. We had very good communication with Travis from the day he walked our property with us through the date the service was performed. Everything was very professional and all debris from the trees was removed the same day. The project greatly improved the appearance of our home and also has reduced the potential for a large limb to be broken off during a storm that might severely damage our house. We were very happy with the results and would recommend The Care of Trees to anyone that could use tree trimming or shaping services.
Description of Work: Trimmed trees surrounding the house moving canopy to above roof line, added cables to stabilize three very large Silver Oak trees with multiple trunks, completely removed one Spruce tree approximately 40 feet tall.

I called to schedule the free tree health assessment, with our primary goal in getting an estimate for the removal of this large willow tree that was encroaching on our house, scraping along our roof, and its trunk already touching the main pipe to our underground sprinkler system. Paul Hollingsworth came out Wednesday morning, right on time. He was friendly and I was impressed with his knowledge. We moved into a home that previously had some professional landscaping planning/work done, but hadn't been managed as well in recent years. He pointed out that our crabapple tree had a condition called scab (treatable in the spring) that accounted for its dropping of leaves; he noticed that an oak tree was growing up within one of our lilac bushes... and it was growing fairly heartily as it was a little taller than our fence and had a diameter of maybe 3 inches. I do not have a green thumb myself and with the amount of foliage that's growing in our yard, it sometimes feels a little overwhelming. (That's not to mention the 12+ maple saplings I uprooted early in the summer that have seeded our lawn from neighbor's trees). And the area where the oak was growing was outside the entrance to an old dog run that was also overgrown with cotoneasters. The huge willow that needed to be removed was also located in this dog run. We also had a number of dying shrubs/bushes that never flowered, and some dying junipers. I didn't write anything down because Paul said I would receive a detailed outline via email (I preferred email over snail mail). He said I would receive the estimate by the end of the week. When I hadn't received anything from him, I called a week later on Wednesday, and the receptionist said she would check in with him. I received an email of the proposal/estimates that same day, and Paul apologized for the delay. I was not bothered with the delay, and appreciated his prompt response when I followed up. While I really appreciated Paul's depth of knowledge, we didn't end up using their services because they were quite expensive. I do believe their name is accurate in that they have sincere "care of trees", but in that same vein, I felt they were reluctant to cut down trees. For example, when I asked if we should remove the oak tree that sprang up within our lilac (not planted there, but seeded from another oak), the suggestion was that it was kind of a tough call; do you keep the lilac, or the oak? Maybe you let both grow and then see what needs to be done. But with the oak being only a foot away from our fence, and about 8 feet from the side of our neighbor's house, I thought there was no way I let the oak keep growing. Of course, Paul was here to do a tree health assessment, and I only asked his opinion; I did not specifically ask about removing the oak, though I imagine they would have if I requested. While I appreciate their apparent desire to avoid removing trees unnecessarily, I thought there could be more consideration to what a homeowner might value. I felt the tree health assessment was a worthwhile service ($65 value according to the mailer) and might recommend it to others, especially if you're moving into a new home with lots of unknown trees/growth. Paul seems like a great guy and very knowledgeable. I just felt their prices were too high.
Description of Work: We were originally interested in getting an estimate on the removal of a large willow tree (taller than our two-story home) that grew up about a foot away from the side of our house. (We just moved into the house earlier this year). We happened to get a mailer for a free tree health assessment, so we did that as well.

I asked if I could get an idea of when someone could come to give me an estimate. Recptionist/scheduler who answered the phone was very uptight and created the aire of "we are doing you a favor taking your call". She never answered my initial question but went on to take all my information down before responding to or even acknowledging my question, completely disregarding that if the availability wasn't what I needed, I may not even need to book an appointment. She wanted to know exactly where the trees were that needed attention, what species of trees, how many, etc. I said how many would depend on the recommendation of the arborist as I have a very large lot with numerous trees and I didn't know every species of tree I have. At first I was very patient and laid back answering all or her questions. She continued to fire questions and comments about how busy they were in a very rushed and condescending manner, almost as if to suggest we don't need your business. Once she finally quoted me a date when an arborist could come out for a consultation on either an evening or weekend (as both my wife and I work downtown Chicago and it is not feasible to take a day off work for a half hour consultation during the work day), it was 3 weeks out. Because the appointment was close to October, I asked her very politely, and since they seemed so booked up, how soon after the consultation might a crew be able to come out because I didn't want to wait until the leaves had fallen off the trees because it is harder to tell what is dead and what isn't. She said oh no, they know what they are doing. I said that may be the case but does the crew at least speak english. She refused to answer the question which is a very pertinent and legistimate question. I can't say how many times I have met for a consultation with the sales person or contractor and then the day of the job 4-5 people show up that don't speak english and don't have a clear direction about what is to be done so it is imperative for me to be able to communicate with them if I'm taking the time out of my day to be there for the work. I know to ask and confirm this now from experience. Well, she absolutely would not answer the question, became very abrasive and talked over me without letting me even explain why I asked the question. Not that I should have to explain the question, I have every right to know who is going to be working on my property and if they speak the same language I do. Should customer service really be this difficult? This company has great ratings and a nice website so I thought this would be a good experience and looked forward to meeting with the arborist. They may have good arborists and crews but unfortunately I never got to find out. The receptionist so turned me off that I would never call back again. There is plenty of competition is this area. Unfortunately, when some companies have good ratings, they become a victim of their own success.

Paul from Care of Trees came to my house on May 24 and gave me a quote of $535 to trim two silver maple trees. I said OK and, at his request, gave him a down payment of $265. He said that they'd do the trimming within three to four weeks. It's now seven weeks later and they still haven't done the work. We've left two messages with them, but they have not returned our calls. Given all this, I'm regrettably giving them an 'F' grade.

Great. We are new to the 'burbs and know nothing about caring for the many trees on our small property. Based on Angie's List, we called Care of Trees to come take a look. Care of Trees was conscious of our schedule, made an early appointment, explained everything thoroughly and came back within a few days to get the job started. We have an understanding of what we need to do this season and later this year to try and keep the trees healthy, and plan to use Care of Trees to keep us on the straight and narrow with regular maintenance and care.

The response was timely; however, for the return trip, we received a message that they would return on a Friday, but they didn't arrive until the following week. We did not receive a call that the visit would be delayed. None of this was critical, but it was somewhat inconvenient. The work, however, was done very well and a return trip to look at another tree was done without charge.
Description of Work: We received a "diagnosis" and estimate for treating the trees and trimming them. Although the trimming was done timely, they did not trim one tree on the side close to the house and we had to call them to come back and do this.
