Discount Heating and Cooling

The job was fine. I have been using them now for three years and I have been very satisfied with them.

When our air conditioner went out in the middle of a heat wave we were distressed!! We were tempted to go with one if the first companies we contacted, but did not because we were not impressed with their offerings. As a last resort, we called Discount Heating and Cooling after seeing them on Angie's List. We generally shy away from companies that have the word "discount" in their name because of past experiences. On this occasion, we were extremely happy to contact this company!! Right from the first contact, I could tell that this was a professional company. I could tell this just by the way they were talking. We decided to have them come out, and look at the air conditioner, and the behavior of their tech, Chris, only emphasized the professionalism of their company. He looked at the old air conditioner, and explained what might be wrong with the unit (it was 22 years old), and I asked him "would it be worth it to fix the unit?" He replied "No". At that point, we started talking about a new unit. First, he called his company to check up on the capacity of the old air conditioner. They told us that it was a 2.5 ton unit. He recommended that we buy that size of air conditioner. The other companies that we talked to both knew it was a 2.5 ton unit, also but recommended a 3.0 ton unit since it would do a better job. Chris, however, told us that the size of the unit was based on the square footage of the home, and that a larger unit would not do the job the right way! To make a longer story shorter, they demonstrated the following characteristics: 1. They were prompt each time they came to our home. 2. They were very considerate when coming into our house. They wore booties over their shoes, and never left a mess. 3. They educated us about why they were recommending the unit for our home. 4. Each person we talked to was courteous, and understanding! 5. The company gives a free one year service warranty with purchase of a new unit. 6. When they come out and service equipment they will service your air conditioner, furnace, water heater, and humidifier. 7. They offer a 5 year warranty on repairs that they perform. I feel like we won the lottery! We will never use another company in the near or far future!!!

Doug, the sales guy for Discount did a great job putting together a very competitive proposal and explaining everything they were proposing and what options I had. He was also very knowledgeable about local rebates that I was eligible, and was very patient with my many questions after receiving the original proposal. I didn't have them do the work but it was almost a coin toss as they were so close to the contractor I did go with. I'd recommend them and will consider them for future maintenance work.

No reply to 2 Angie's List Messages, first sent 10/5/13 and second on 10/9/13. Also no reply to email sent 10/16/13 to address listed on company web site. 11-26-13 update: After many communications with Provider and Angie's List it became apparent that the Provider wasn't receiving communications from AL due to a configuration issue. They have since worked with AL to resolve this. I have changed the rating to a B based on this new situation. I believe the B is merited because ultimately it is up to the Provider to check AL account regularly to determine if any configuration problems exist and because the Provider ultimately worked to resolve the issue and ultimately apologized several times for the lack of initial reply to me.

He installed the thermostat that I had purchased - that was fine. However, he did not check even the filter in the furnace. I had purposefully left the one in there - because it was dirty - he told me it was fine. I don't think he even took the cover off the air conditioning unit. Did not do anything but try to get me to purchase a new one. And this one works fine and is very cost efficient. I am a code enforcement officer so I do know what they are supposed to do. He did nothing. The thing that is killing me is that I have recommended the company on a past experience and even have my next door neighbor calling them. I am very disappointed in the technician they sent out. I will not have them return.

This guy from Discount Heating & Cooling was pretty personable which I appreciate. He seemed to be really understanding. I had a problem that he could not solve unfortunately. It is one of those intermittent things that only happens two or three times a year. He could not recreate it.

I got an annual contract with them. I am happy with them.

Their technician , Chris, came on time and promptly replaced a fan in my 14 year-old air conditioner. It was raining out but he fixed it without complaint. I have used Discount twice in the last two years and am well satisfied. J. Caldwell, Wheeling, IL.

this place received good reviews on this site + were courteous and knowledgable when providing estimate. work was completed as scheduled and furnace and AC are both working fine 6 months after the install. No issue with work but there wasn't a great cleanup after completion and there wasn't a great deal of help from them when submitting for the rebates with the utility, despite that being a significant part of the estimated price. I knew they weren't going to do the submission for rebate but the information they provided wasn't sufficient to get the rebate and it took a couple tries to get the necessary information.

I have been using them for years and as usual they were very courius and knowledgeable. They gave me technical explanations and they did the job and left.

I called around a few places, and I went with Discount Heating b/c they worked on fee for service basis rather than an hrly rate AND there was an Angie's List coupon for them. We have 2 furnaces, and were blowing heat fine, but was making some louder whirring noises recently, so called for service. One of their technicians, Brian, came over and was friendly from the start and very willing to explain what he was going to do, show me what i can do myself on the maintenance side, answered all my questions happily, and even posted little stickers on my furnace exterior to make sure I slide in the furnace filters the right side in when I replace them. He was also good about explaining what various things cost. Discount also offers a maintenance/tuneup package that includes 2 semi-yearly visits (once for furnace tuneup/ water heater & another for A/C) for $190 which I thought was a pretty good deal considering how some other companies I've called charge a $100 service charge just to visit once for 30min. In the end, I bought the $190 pkg (which included this visit's tuneup of one of our furnaces), paid for tuneup of our 2nd furnace ($69.95), replaced a flame sensor ($94.57), and replaced humidifier pad ($18). Had an Angie's List coupon to take $20 off, making the final total $352.52. So far, all is still good after day 1...everything's really quiet now w/ the heat blowing. If this service keeps up, I'll be happy to keep recommending Discount. Thanks, Brian!

He was so clever in that he had me photograph various things so he could come to our home fully prepared and ready to complete his task. He was timely, detailed, honest, extremely personable and actually felt like a family member. He is the owner of the company and enjoys putting a personal touch to his work. We have decided to get rid of the company who designed and installed the system in our 7 year old home and replace them with Discount Heating. Tonight we had another issue regarding the humidifier and he called back right away and talked us through adjusting things to avoid having to pay a service call. He is so considerate and ethical--so refreshing. He has gained our confidence and trust and we look forward to continuing business with him and referring friends and clients his way.

It went wonderful. I was not home, but my husband said they did a wonderful job.

The owner really knows his product. This is why I went with them instead of the company I had been using for years in the past.

They were pleasant professional on the phone and the service was done at the established time. Very happy with them and we will use them again.

The price was so good because I used an Angie's List Deal. Even without the special deal, their prices are excellent. I have used Discount Heating and A/C for a few years. They are punctual, polite and do a good job.

I called and talked to Doug (after trying several other places which did not seem to understand what I needed) who said he can certainly take a look at it. He came out within the window we scheduled and was able to repair the control. It seems the main problem is the control was not on properly. Doug did a great job of repairing it, which saved me the cost of buying a new part.

We had a bad valve on our boiler, which was so old that an entire assembly had to be replaced. Doug not only came out right away (we were without heat), but he repeatedly contacted our home -repair insurance agent (American Home Shield) to convince them to pay for the entire assembly ($750) when they only wanted to pay for single valve ($75). Doug not only gave up his time to make repeated calls, he also gave up his profit on the parts and labor charges above what he gets from his contract with American Home Shield (which I assume, but don't know, is lower). We always use Discount Heating for our heating and cooling maintenance because Doug and his employees have repeatedly proven themselves to be honest, dependable, and competent. When we replaced our air conditioners several years ago and were getting estimates, Doug did not give us the lowest bid because he told us that one unit wouldn't properly cool our two-floor home, and he refused to bid on a single unit, while other major dealers gave us one-unit estimates. He was willing to lose the sale rather than sell us something that he didn't think would work for us. We chose Discount rather than the lower bidders. Later there was a mechanical problem with one of the new units, and Discount was there the next day to fix it.

Came home after work on Monday and found home really warm. When I checked the vents, it was only blowing warm air. Went to check out the AC unit and found one of the blades snapped in half and stuck to the side of the unit wall not moving. I called the Discount Heating and Cooling and they sent someone out that evening to take a look. The technician diagosed the problem and recommended replacing both the fan and motor even though the motor was working. Since I heard the weird loud sound from the AC and it's about 15 years old, I agreed to replace both. Luckily I did, because when he showed me the old moter, it was in a bad shape. They arrived an hour after their scheduled two hour window the next day, but Brian did a wonderful job in fixing the AC unit. I would highly recommend them.

Received an estimate gentleman was knowedgeable but it felt way to much like I was buying a used car. Through in some "sweetners" at the end. One of which he said we needed to decide right now if we wanted it. Personally I cannot stand those type of deals. Tell me what you can do at what price and let the deal stand on its own. Went with another company which was less but the quality rating on the equipment was less. If salesman was not so swarmy probably would of wednt with Discount.

-False advertizing, -over billing almost triple, -misrepresenting the problem, the guarantee, the parts replaced, the refund and sellers deceptive practice. Jan 23, 2012: Brian from Discount Heating Cooling in Wheeling IL came out to service our furnace.

It went great. Clean-up was good. Two days later Steve the owner called to check to see how things were going. Asked if we were satisfied. We appreciate his concern.Prior to making a choice of contractor Steve answered many of our questions on the phone. Spent a lot of time explaining his product. Our original furnece was 14 years old and we had just had it cleaned when told by another contractor that we had a cracked heat exchanger. My furnace stopped working late yesterday evening. I called them at 9 am and was told a repairman was in the area now. Drove home and he came soon after. Quickly diagnosed the problem and went to pick up part. Repair was done quickly. Cost with coupon and discount was very reasonable

I have used them in the past, and found their prices to be lower than many other competitors.They give you 5 years warranty on Parts and labor, provided you keep the unit in good working order. They will not sell you rebuilt parts, which has happened to me in the past, only to be told it was a new part, with a 90 day warranty. These guys are honest, professional, and very reasonably priced. I would never use anyone else.! An extremely delightful experience from the initial call to request service right through to paying the tech at the end of the job!! I highly reccomend this company!!!!!!
